2023.06.01 07:00 lptos Application/School list help - CA ORM, average stats, ZERO non-clinical

Hello, I received my MCAT score back recently and would like some input on my school list and application for this cycle. For reference, I graduated in 2022 and am heading into my 2nd gap year now. I am absolutely open to either MD or DO. I do prefer to stay on the coasts, but with how my application is looking, I will be happy going anywhere in the US.
Profile:
GPA: 3.69 cGPA, 3.65 sGPA (upward trend)
MCAT: 512 (128/128/128/128)
State of Residence: CA (no ties to any other state)
ORM; Asian male
SES; Low, qualified for FAP
Ghost/Preview: Not taken. Just recently found out about this test; planning on taking this July 2023, but j

I will be applying to MDs where I am at least around median GPA/MCAT. Currently my list is still a very first draft based on those stats. I will also be applying to the big 5 DO schools and a few additional DOs. I know that my non-clinical volunteering is pretty much non-existent. Does highschool volunteering count at all? It was mentioned in one of my LORs.
Are there any schools you would include? If there are any schools that you think I am not competitive for and that I should exclude, please let me know! I knowRush and Loyola typically value non-clinical volunteering, but I feel my stats and other ECs are okay. Any advice is appreciated!

2023.06.01 01:33 User_3971 MHA/CCA/PSE/RCA: Skip the line! Career jobs posted within. 5-31 rollup.

Damn it, lost a day! Had Memorial Day off but got fucked (mandated to work) on Saturday. Threw off the timing. Super-rare Wednesday edition!
Good afternoon. Brief listing of CAREER JOBS pulled from usps.com/careers/ for your convenience. Tell HR User_3971 sent you, let's see if they pay more than .25¢ per head. NOTE: Maintenance jobs are drying up - the In Service Register may finally be seeing results for our already career people.
Some jobs may be part-time regular however all listed jobs should qualify for federal benefits from day one. To save text I have only listed the location and date of posting for each. Use the posting number for your search term. LC and MM are entry-level Maintenance. Here is a Maint overview and here is Exam 955 info. You can DO it!

NOTE: USPS NEVER charges a fee for entrance exams. If payment is requested during the application process, walk the fuck away, go to usps.com/careers/ and APPLY THERE. We even has a video walkthrough prepared.

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc. Always mention working safely.

Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books, you are a qualified applicant.

Explanation of MVO/TTO to save time:
MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.

USPS provides the training. (Maintenance jobs at least. TTO and management...GOOD LUCK)

You don't have to be crazy to work here. We'll train you. Everything but proper email usage.

2023.05.30 03:19 brokoli95 Update: First Overnight Trip - Solo - NYC

I posted on this subreddit on late April/early May, to ask if anyone did a bikepacking trip to Harriman State Park before. Wanted to do another post after trip to share my findings for whomever wants to plan a similar trip.
I did the trip on May 12-13th. Actually wanted to post before but life was busy couldn't share the details before. Thanks for all the comments on my previous post, the comments made me realize that there are certain things that you just try & learn. I'll also def check the 718 Cyclery in the future for group trips.
The purpose of this trip was to explore my limits and the route to Big Hill Shelter, see it for myself that how bike accessible it actually is. I didn't want to use a full PTO from work, instead I asked to leave by 2pm. However, next time I'm definitely going to take the full day off to hit the road early. For the route, I decided to trust Google. From my start point I set course for Big Hill Shelter, adding The 9W Market as a stop. After midtown, I passed through Central Park then all the way to Upper Manhattan to George Washington bridge. Right when I entered Jersey, I immediately started cycling on the 9W all the way up to the market with no stops. After I had some food at my pitstop, I kept following Google Maps, now routes next to Hudson river that made me pass through some really cute townships until the Nyack Beach State Park. The road at the State Park was a bit rocky but also really leisurely sometimes right next to the river, sometimes in between trees under a nice shade. The journey was really bike friendly until the turn to Camp Winaki Rd from Call Hollow Rd.
My maps was telling me that Camp Winaki Rd is a wood road, so I assumed it was just going to be like riding on a path similar to the Nyack Beach State Park. I was able to ride my bike until a Park building next to what Google calls First Reservoir. At that point it started to get dark and Google started to be unreliable. I opened up the official Harriman Park map and figured out that I had to walk with my bike until the Long Path & Camp Winaki road intersection. Also need to mention that, because I spent a little time figuring out my direction, I was left in complete dark before getting to my destination. With the help of my flashlight, I continued to roll my bike on foot, and about 1.5 miles later (in about 45-60 minutes) I managed to find the shelter. The weather was 70 degrees and I was alone until 11:30pm. Was an amazing, peaceful night. Around 11:30pm, randomly, a group of boy scouts came to the shelter as well. We shared the area and talked for a bit.
My takeaways for next time is really a brief list: Leave early so no need to go through the excitement of trying to navigate in absolute dark and instead of Big Hill Shelter, putting Long Path Hiker's Parking to my maps and then following the Long Path for 30-45 minutes on foot from the other direction still heading towards the shelter. Also need to bring a water filter or carry more water depending the length of the trip. Leaving details and an equipment list below. Hopefully this will help others who want to do a similar trip!

2023.05.26 15:39 Sense_Difficult Were they USING Gayle King as part of their ruse of the Car Chase?

Were they USING Gayle King as part of their ruse of the Car Chase?
IMO Even though MM knew that the Paps had been arranged ahead of time, in her mind it was for HER night where she was getting her award. Paps would make her feel like a movie star and then later in the week another award. I do not believe she knew that Harry was going to try to Cosplay Diana's car chase. If she did, she would have not been sitting in the car smiling the whole time. She would have FAKED cowering in fear, turning in to Harry's shoulder, hugging her mother. Left eye one tear GO!He on the other hand is recording and acting angry and frazzled.
We know they didnt stay at the Carlyle and I don't think they weren't allowed to stay there. I think she wanted it COMPED and when it wasn't they were enraged and refused to stay. So they go to Gayle King's house.
Now their excuse for driving around was they wanted to protect the privacy of their friend Except, I'm pretty damn sure that the Paps definitely know where Gayle King lives. And it doesn't seem like she's uber private about it either. She did a whole article for Hello magazine where she reveals the inside of her penthouse.
https://www.hellomagazine.com/homes/20221013154082/cbs-mornings-gayle-king-new-york-penthouse-revealed/
So why the need for secrecy? Gayle King said she spoke to them about it and they were shocked that no one believed them. Well NO ONE believed them right from the start except for GAYLE KING. So imagine this. Harry knows they will be going to her apartment that night and she's a reporter who obviously is their freind. He's trying to Manipulate the media and plant stories in the press YET again like he always does. (I still don't know why people can't see what's blatantly in front of our faces and think it's all her.)
He sets up the paps and also instructs his drivers to drive erraticlty . Not sure if the security team was in on it. But Harry sets this whole thing up with the INTENTION of going back to GK's apartment at the end and flipping out in hysterics. Meghan and her mother are not really clued in to what he's manipulted here. His goal is that GK sees them both obviously stressed out, he's having a fake nervous break down. The trauma!!!
Why would he do this? 1. To bolster his court cases. 2. He knows she would invite them on her show to talk about the chase the next day or so.
Except it blows up in his face. They get stuck behind a garbage truck with two cops behind them blaring their sitens. And the chase is over before it begins. Not only that, earlierhis driver gets pulled over for driving like a nut. He can't spin the story.
Gayle King has always seemed pretty gullible and easy to manipulate to me. She was friends with a Narcissist so she was probably the codependant which is why she can't see through them. That's why she was the only person in NYC who believed their story But she wasn't going by the press, she was reacting to an entirely different thing. Them FAKE acting in her apartment that night.
But I think Oprah saw right through their ruse that night. She probably cautioned GK. I bet she's going to pull back from them from now on.

EDIT To put it in perspective this is the route they needed to take to get to Gayle Kings house.

Source https://cptdog.com/blogs/monroe-college-student-experience

Introduction

First, let me give you a brief introduction to my background. I am a Master's graduate in the humanities and, after using my OPT for a year, I chose to maintain my legal status as a student working in the US by using CPT. At that time, I sought help from GoElite for school selection and application and finally settled on the MBA program at Monroe College in New York. As is well known, an MBA is relevant to most professions because all fields involve some knowledge of management, which makes it easier to demonstrate the relevance of the degree to one's future career.

Academic Structure and Attendance 📅

The MBA program at Monroe College is accredited by ACBSP, making it relatively stable in terms of qualifications, which is why I chose this program. The entire program takes about two years to complete, with three semesters per year: fall, winter, and spring.
In addition to live and recorded online classes, the school has strict attendance requirements for onsite classes. However, this also means that, in the event of an H1B RFE in the future, having strict attendance records can be helpful.
One thing I'd like to mention is that, after completing three semesters of coursework at Monroe, students can apply for a one-semester leave by filling out a semester leave form. Moreover, during this break, students can still apply for CPT as usual and work, making it a good opportunity to increase the chances of obtaining an H1B visa. An additional semester may also cover the H1B lottery in March of the following year.
For course selection, I referred to GoElite's internal rating system for professors, which allowed me to choose the most suitable professor for my learning style.

Course Selection System📝

Academic Pressure: 🧐
In my opinion, the intensity of the program is moderate, and spending four or five hours per week on coursework is completely manageable.
In the first semester, several one-credit foundation courses are grouped together, which may be slightly more tiring because the assignments for the three courses combined can make the workload seem larger than a three-credit course. However, after overcoming this stage, the three-credit courses in subsequent semesters will be much easier.
Regarding assignment submissions, I certainly do not advocate passing the due date, but overall, the teachers are quite understanding. If an assignment is submitted late, just send an email to the teacher and explain the situation, and it should not be a problem.
Also, it's important to note that for online courses where there is no need to video chat with the teacher, the teacher will post the assignment on the school's Blackboard platform. So, students should remember to check for new assignments posted on Blackboard.

I-20 Application🎯

Schools prefer to have 1-2 weeks to process the I-20 application before the start of the semester, which is about 15 days. For example, if the start date is January 6th, your previous school should send the release form and SEVIS transfer date to Monroe on December 24th of the previous year. This way, the school has enough time to ensure that you can receive CPT on the first day of enrollment. Monroe can only start issuing CPT to students after your previous school has transferred your release form and the new school has received the document.
As a negative example, I procrastinated and missed the deadline for applying to a CPT program. I found Go to help me with an expedited application when I faced the desperate situation of my OPT soon expiring. Fortunately, I encountered a very professional and helpful education institution. GoElite cooperated with Monroe's admission process, so I received an offer within 4 working days, with the application fee waived, smoothly enrolled, activated CPT successfully, and maintained my work status.
In case anyone needs similar help, scan the QR code at the end of the article to consult with GoElite's professional consultant teacher.👇

CPT Application ⛳️

After completing enrollment, to apply for CPT, you only need to:
  1. register for the internship course
  2. fill out the application form, and
  3. sign the employer agreement.
  4. once you have prepared the above materials, submit them to a teacher named Diana for review
Her response is usually fast, and you can receive CPT one or two working days after the employer signs the agreement. By the way, there is no requirement that the agreement must be sent from the employer to the school. You can prepare it yourself and send it directly to the school. It is better to take the initiative than to passively wait for the employer.
Some students from large companies, such as Google, are not provided with an employer agreement. However, this issue can be solved easily. I have encountered classmates who asked for a separate offer from a Director with good relations, stating that they need it for CPT. This offer can look different from the official letter, and you can use it repeatedly when renewing CPT every semester by changing the date.
Many students complain that other schools allow CPT to be renewed once a year, so why can't Monroe do the same?
Personally, I think Monroe's approach is based on a serious and responsible attitude. Continuously renewing CPT also consumes the school's human resources and time, so why bother? Ultimately, it is to provide more legally compliant documents for H1B or green card applications in the future. When renewing each semester, the required documents and application process are the same as the first time. I believe that the smart reader who has read this far can handle the subsequent process smoothly.
In addition, if you do not want to interrupt your CPT, you can work normally during the one-month break between semesters, as long as you communicate with the school in advance.

Transportation 🚗

The Professional Experience Track campus provided by Monroe College is located at the New Rochelle Campus, which has very convenient transportation. The New Rochelle Campus is located in the center of New Rochelle, a city in the north of New York City.
The MBA program that I attended was located at the New Rochelle Campus, which is only about a 20-minute drive from the central station in Manhattan. The frequency of the schedule is also quite high, so if you live in Manhattan, commuting is very convenient. During non-class hours, you can also take the opportunity to explore Manhattan, combining learning and relaxation.
Students who live nearby can easily come and go on the same day. The parking problem is easily solved. There is a free ground parking lot on campus, and there are also garages around the school that require payment, but the price is not too expensive.

Vaccination 💉

According to the school's regulations, if you haven't received the MMR vaccine, you cannot register for classes normally.
I found that some of my classmates encountered this bottleneck during the same period and were in a rush to find out that they couldn't register for classes at the beginning of the semester. In fact, the solution is very simple.
I believe that everyone has received the MMR vaccine in their previous school. You can find the vaccination record issued by the previous school's hospital, upload the materials to Monroe, and then waive this hold!
Dining 🍗
For students who attend classes at the New Rochelle Campus, be sure not to miss the desserts handmade by culinary students and the restaurant The Dining Lab, which is completely operated by students. The restaurant's menu is updated twice a semester, aiming to provide diners with the freshest local seasonal ingredients. The average cost per person for dinner is only $29.95 before tax. If you take a look at the menu, you will know that what I said is not exaggerated. This set menu includes starters, main courses, and desserts.thedininglab.com/menu
Accommodation🏨
Students who fly in to attend classes may also consider the issue of accommodation. I usually stay near the Grand Central Station.
Here are some hotels that I recommend for their low price (around $100), proximity, and value for money. You can consider them according to your personal preferences:
Hyatt Grand Central New York

2023.05.20 19:33 luveruvtea Love Letter to St Louis

I was born at St Anthony's on Grand Ave in 1957, and have been here ever since. As a child, I spent much time in the city, visiting relatives, etc. We lived in S County when it was still farmland, and I played on the Meramec river shore, which was close by.
I saw the Arch being built every week. We drove by it all the time to visit my grandfather on East Grand. One day, my dad told me, "Next time we drive by, it will be finished." I saw the narrow space that needed to be filled, and I realized that, on or near my 8th birthday, the Arch would be done. I did go up in the Arch a few times. The view always reminded me that I lived in a river town, surrounded by a vast land that appeared unending.
We went often to Forest Park, to the zoo, the jewel box, the museum. I had heard of Central Park and NY, and I imagined that Forest Park was quite similar. I was still a child, after all, and had yet to travel much. After I had visited Europe, I could see the inspiration from that country as to the architecture and atmosphere of St Louis, but as a kid, I just thought I lived in a pretty city.
My parents took us to Hawks' and Cardinals' games; we went to the arena for a couple of circuses.
My pediatrician was on Chouteau, so we rode the bus to his office from our apt in Maplewood. I liked the bus, esp sitting on the side seats. The bus's belching out sound as it moved was exciting, too.
Very recently, I took my grandchildren to the zoo. I felt the thrill of seeing the Arch along the skyline, just as I did when I was a child. My grandkids also enjoyed the site.
The zoo was great, and despite all the renovations, my memories attached to the experience, and I felt a sweet happiness.
I love St Louis. She has her serious problems, but what city does not? I am glad I was born here and that I have lived here since birth.
