2023.03.25 05:17 az053110 Seeking advice on how to help family with part time childcare

Hi everyone, currently using a throwaway. I am a frequent lurker on this sub & have gotten so many great tips and suggestions from other parents. I am currently in a predicament and looking for some advice on how to proceed… Sorry in advance for all of the abbreviations and the extremely long novel; there is a LOT of context behind the current situation that I’d like for you all to consider!
So SIL— my husband’s older sister but I consider her my own sister and am very close to her— was recently let go from her full time remote position. She has found a new full time job, this time in person, that is M-F 8:30-5 and starts relatively soon. She has 2 children: niece 1F, and nephew 10M.
Since both she and and her husband (BIL) would be working full time, naturally the question of childcare came up for the days both would be working. She informed me that her MIL (BIL’s mother, who lives 1 hour away) would be meeting SIL approx. halfway to do a drop off and watch niece for the full shift, then do the same thing for pick up… This is a lot of driving/gas/time spent for everyone involved (and they have tried doing the full commute before so I know how hard it is, even split in half).
I currently stay at home with my only daughter 2F. This was always the plan with my husband until my daughter is old enough to go to pre-k/kindergarten. He makes a decent income to cover all of our bills and have a little bit left in the bank after too.
I have offered to watch niece part time at 1-2 days max per week, split between the MIL watching niece 1-2 days per week that both parents are working. (Please note that SIL did not ask me directly; I have offered to watch her as I feel bad for everyone and really do not want her to spend so much time in a car seat shuttling from place to place every week… I also know SIL has a slightly strained relationship with her MIL so I am trying my best to alleviate some of the stress on SIL shoulders as well since they clash on a lot of different things [especially respecting boundaries and SIL wishes]. And SIL has offered to pay me a fair rate as well, I would not do all this for free.)
The main question is, what is the fair price for this service? It would be 1-2 full days of childcare. According to her, a local daycare is asking $450 per week in the area which seems like a lot but I am not well versed on numbers or hours/unsure if it is in home or a typical daycare center or not… The biggest difference is that I know the level of care I will provide, as her aunt, is infinitely much better over a daycare… I would be providing her plenty of one on one time, meaningful play, home cooked food & snacks, and she gets a perk of spending quality time with my toddler as well.
Logistically I would be watching niece from what looks like between 8-5:30 or so. Luckily she is a pretty easy baby and is not too fussy or difficult (unlike my feral toddler lol). I would also be responsible for nephew (10M) for a short amount of time once he comes home from school, until one of his parents gets home. He is a mostly independent kid.
There are sooooo many factors overall but the main thing is that I do not want this to strain our current relationship as we do have different parenting styles plus she is returning to work out of necessity and I want to respect that, not to mention the financial aspect of it all also.
(The backstory is SIL, her husband, and 2 kids moved in with us to save money to pay off their debts and save for a house. They originally moved in with MIL living 1 hour away from the city last summer, commuting to the city for work/appointments 2 hours a day… That was not feasible long term with 2 kids, especially in our winter climate, and so my husband and I offered for them to move into our house that we had just bought, with us. They have 2 rooms out of the 3 and we share all other spaces, without charging them rent. We did this knowing they would do the same for us, if the roles were reversed. They moved in with us last August right before nephew started school & claimed to only need to stay with us 15 months or so optimistically, to do all of the paying off/saving… I do not know the current timeline or where they stand right now.)
The question of finances is hard as I am not sure what a decent wage is for this type of situation, and inflation has not helped at all… My husband and I have a joint account. We do still have a few small amounts we need to pay off and since inflation is kicking us in the ass as well, I’d ideally LOVE to be able to have my own source income to contribute as I do not have the time or ability to work part time or remote currently… We currently pay our mortgage in full. As I have stated before, we do not currently charge them any rent. They split other utilities such as groceries, internet, power, water, etc pretty much 50/50 each month. As the SAHM I do majority of the cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, bills maintenance, etc and everyone chips in where they can and alternates occasionally.
With this new job, they will both be in a slightly better financial spot than us, as my husband’s decent income goes towards the 3 of us plus mortgage and half of bills. I suppose I have a few questions:
  1. What is a fair rate to charge per hour or day? I do not want to undervalue my worth as I know I will take care of both children as best as I can, but also do not want to overcharge as that would mean they wouldn’t save as much per month/live with us longer (which I know no one wants, we all want them to get a house and I know we all want our own space lol).
  2. How do I ensure that I am not being taken advantage of? What should I ask for in return, as I would be taking care of 2 children while the other adults work full time? My loss of time & freedom are mostly at risk here, since I originally only agreed to stay at home with my one & only toddler and she is starting to get to the independent age now, unlike my niece who is still learning how to walk and such. (I am also unsure of our own future, but we are most likely OAD unless our situation or fortune changes drastically.)
If anyone has any advice on all of this please let me know— literally anything is welcome at this point.
Thank you all in advance and sorry again for the long novel. 🙂

2023.03.25 05:14 Extreme-888 Closing: U.S. stocks close slightly higher on Friday, Deutsche Bank situation in focus

U.S. stocks closed slightly higher on Friday, with all three major stock indexes posting gains for the week. The European and U.S. banking crisis remains a market focus. Investors are worried that Deutsche Bank will become the latest victim after the Credit Suisse (0.8612, -0.01, -1.23%) meltdown. The German chancellor and the ECB president spoke one after another to try to ease the market's concerns about Deutsche Bank.
The Dow rose 132.28 points, or 0.41%, to 32,237.53 points; the Nasdaq rose 36.56 points, or 0.31%, to 11,823.96 points; the S&P 500 rose 22.27 points, or 0.56%, to 3,970.99 points.

For the week, the Dow rose 1.18 percent, the S&P 500 rose 1.39 percent and the Nasdaq rose 1.66 percent.

Deutsche Bank's U.S.-listed shares closed down 3 percent, after sinking more than 8 percent at one point during the session. This follows a sharp rise in the German bank's credit default swaps, raising market concerns about the health of Europe's banking sector.

The European and U.S. banking crisis hit global financial markets, questions about the health of the financial system forced the European and U.S. governments to urgently intervene to appease, but also the European and U.S. central banks to fight the battle against inflation has become increasingly complex.
And on Thursday, Deutsche Bank's credit default swaps (CDS) spiked to 173 basis points from 142 basis points the previous day, according to S&P Global. It was the biggest one-day gain in Deutsche Bank CDS since records began in 2019, according to data provided by market institutions. At the time, German regulators modified their debt framework to introduce senior notes.

While major European banks are not as vulnerable as U.S. regional banks, investors are extra nervous about funding costs and other issues in the wake of the Credit Suisse collapse.

Larry McDonald, founder of Bear Traps Report research firm, said Friday: "The collapse of Silicon Valley banks has raised more concerns about banks. As a result, banks like Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank, which had been very badly managed - and we're talking about very badly managed and policymaking - for decades, suddenly came under the scrutiny of investors around the world overnight."

Michael Bell, global market strategist at JPMorgan Chase (124.91, -1.93, -1.52%), said investors are trying to determine "the extent to which concerns about the banking system will lead to a further tightening of credit conditions.

Bell noted that this will determine the outlook for the stock market, the risk of recession in both the U.S. and Europe has risen, and based on historical experience, a downturn is never good news for the market. However, he also said that central banks and regulators are likely to continue to respond to the pressures facing the banking sector.

Investors are also keeping a close eye on regional bank performance. On Thursday U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said regulators are prepared to take more action, if necessary, to stabilize the U.S. banking system.
We used important tools to act quickly and prevent contagion," Yellen told the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday. These are tools we can use again. The strong steps we took ensured the safety of Americans' savings. And, of course, we will be prepared to take additional action if necessary."

Yellen's comments came after the U.S. saw the successive failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. The looming banking crisis has led U.S. regulators to make several attempts to boost confidence in the U.S. banking (27.14, 0.17, 0.63%) system.

And according to JPMorgan analyst Nikolaos estimates, the "most vulnerable" U.S. banks may have lost a total of about $1 trillion in deposits since last year, half of which was lost in March after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.

The analyst noted that of the $17 trillion in bank deposits in the United States, nearly $7 trillion is not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

Investors have been evaluating the latest policy moves announced by the Federal Reserve this week. The Fed announced a 25 basis point rate hike on Wednesday, while hinting that its rate hike campaign could soon come to an end.

Meanwhile, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell noted that the banking crisis has tightened credit conditions for U.S. households and businesses, which could put pressure on the economy.

The main driver of market volatility is the tug-of-war between investors assessing price stability and financial stability," said Tom Hainlin, a national investment strategist in the wealth management division of U.S. bank Hopewell (34.9, -0.16, -0.46%). It is the Fed's responsibility to keep inflation in check while limiting further pressure on capital market activity that may result from continued rate increases."

On Friday's economic data front, the preliminary U.S. Markit manufacturing PMI for March recorded 49.3, a new high since October 2022. The preliminary services PMI registered 53.8, a new high since April 2022.

Stocks in focus

Deutsche Bank shares were lower. Shares of other banks with high exposure to corporate lending, such as Commerzbank and Societe Generale (4.305, -0.20, -4.33%), also generally fell.

Credit Suisse and UBS (18.99, -0.18, -0.94%) shares were lower. The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly investigating UBS and Credit Suisse.

Accenture (272, 0.34, 0.13%) announced global operating revenues of $15.8 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2023 (ended Feb. 28, 2023), up 5% in U.S. dollars and 9% in local currencies. USD 22.1 billion in new orders.

The group also announced it will lay off 19,000 employees, the largest in a series of job cuts in the consulting industry. Accenture said it expects the majority of employees affected will be in corporate roles whose work cannot be charged to clients.

Tesla (190.41, -1.81, -0.94%) Automotive (Beijing) Co. filed a recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration, deciding to recall some imported Model S electric cars with production dates between Oct. 14, 2015 and Aug. 23, 2020, totaling 2,649 units, effective immediately.

Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Friday that IQE will replace Lian Ya as the exclusive supplier of epi wafers for the iPhone 15 series' distance sensors. Although all iPhone 15 models use the same lucid island design as the iPhone 14 Pro models, the difference is that the iPhone 14 Pro places the distance sensor under the screen/outside the lucid island, while the iPhone 15 series places the distance sensor inside the lucid island with almost no change in the area of the lucid island.

Block, the payment service provider founded by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, said in a statement Thursday that it is considering legal action against short-seller Hindenburg Research, saying Hindenburg Research's reports are factually incorrect and "intended to deceive and confuse investors." Block also said it will cooperate with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Block also said it would cooperate with the SEC.

Hindenburg Research earlier reported that a two-year investigation into Block concluded that the company exaggerated the true number of subscribers, underestimated its customer acquisition costs, and took advantage of low-income people and minorities with "predatory lending and fees.

Oracle (88.01, 0.23, 0.26%) is cutting jobs at Cerner, particularly in its marketing department, as it moves to integrate the U.S. health information technology company it bought for $28.3 billion last year, the media reported, citing sources.

Some Cerner employees were told they were being let go last week, people familiar with the matter said. Some former employees who were laid off said that although the exact size of the layoffs could not be determined, Cerner's marketing and creative services departments were hit the hardest, and some technical positions were also affected.

S&P downgraded Credit Suisse Group's Additional Tier 1 (AT1) rating to "D" from "C" on March 23 and subsequently withdrew it. S&P believes that the Swiss authorities' enforcement of a 100% write-down of the AT1 instrument confirms the impact of regulation and legislation.

Mywell Technology announced 320 job cuts.

Elsewhere in the market, New York gold futures closed down 0.6% on Friday, but rose about 0.5% for the week, the fourth consecutive week of recorded gains. Gold futures for April delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell $12.10, or 0.6 percent, to close at $1983.60 an ounce. The futures price closed at $1,995.90 per ounce on Thursday, the highest close for the most active contract since March 10 last year.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures for May delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange crude oil market fell 70 cents, or 1 percent, to close at $69.26 a barrel.

2023.03.25 05:03 DragonStation Sub/moderation change ideas…

Recently, EpicJourneyMan asked if I wanted to be a mod. It was a cool offer, and the more I think about it, the more I like the idea. I’m very passionate about this topic and would like to do my part to help ensure the subreddit is the one-stop home for experiencers and those with an outsider’s interest alike.
Here are some changes I personally would like to make. I’m making this post so the community can comment if they agree/disagree with any of my ideas.
1) The biggest issue we’re facing is the endless stream of troll posts. When you visit the sub, you see about ten of these a day. This is a pretty simple fix — we just have to delete them. They’re typically violating the “low-effort” rule, so there’s no problem with removing them on those grounds. If they seem like trolls for a different reason, even if the posts are more substantive, we’ll deal with that case by case.
2) I would also like to open up the sub to people introducing new potential MEs, provided the posts aren’t “low-effort.” Don’t just say, “anybody else remember Chipotle serving fish?” Explain your experience with detail, and let us know you’re sincere and why you have reason to suspect others may share the same “false memory.” This is the most important practical usage of this sub, so we should be encouraging people to share potential new MEs. Again, provided they’re sincere and put some effort into the post. We don’t need the bi-weekly thread anymore, but I suppose we can keep it up too.
3) The new grey/green color-coded thing just seems kinda confusing and isn’t being enforced very well. I’d rather just drop this — it’s not really helping and may just be backfiring by suggesting preference to some posters over others. So I’d like to drop that.
4) I would also like to allow polls, images and videos as acceptable post types. I see no reason to exclude these, and they come in handy for the subject matter. Polls especially — the Mandela Effect is a community-driven phenomena, so being able to poll subscribers is a handy option. And again, if we can start reducing the number of trolls, the polls will hopefully become a more valuable resource.
5) I’m one of those people who think the Mandela Effect is real, “paranormal,” and should be a much bigger thing generally. We don’t even have an article on Wikipedia — meanwhile, basically every major cryptid/cryptozoological animal has its own page, for instance. So I’d like to make outreach to people in the paranormal world (skeptics included) and host some AMAs on here. I don’t see why we can’t and it’ll help raise awareness about the topic and get more people paying attention.
6) I would like to make a greater focus on the sub an effort to actually find evidence/proof (“residue”) of MEs. I’m not sure how quite yet, but it might be fun to have an “ME of the month” where we organize a “search party” for evidence. For instance, I’m quite confident that my childhood copy of Mario Kart 64 had “no rails” on Rainbow Road. If enough people checked their cartridges, we might actually find one! We can do this with many MEs and encourage a greater community effort to find evidence in the public record. This will be my #1 priority.
How do we feel about these ideas? Agreements/disagreements? Anything else we’d like to see?

2023.03.25 04:54 WreckageHothHead Flaws/insufficiencies in RLM's spacewar commentary: thread 2

The previous thread revolved around Plinkett's logic/realism comparison between the Death Star's interior and the "Theed power room", the much more reasonable Bespin comparison that was left out of the picture, and how this omission compromised the point that was being made.
https://old.reddit.com/RedLetterMedia/comments/11yn4jh/flawsinsufficiencies_in_rlms_spacewar_commentary/
This post is going to be about the high/low stakes of the Ep1/Ep4 plotlines and the way those are analyzed by RLM:
Plinkett audio commentary: SW Ep1
And he has one last chance, and he puts that part in the pod - and finally, the pod starts working, and he can enter the big race - you know, to win the big prize at the end which will save.. the whole.. family.
And then he says "it's woorrrkiiing.." and you know, then you swell the dramatic music... - and that's when that scene works?
That scene doesn't work.. 20 minutes into a movie that's not about podracing.
I'm sorry to get all bitchy on you, but-.. but-... d'you ever watch this movie and, and be like... why did that happen, or, or-.. "I don't feel anything inside".... you know, I'm- like "I'm dead inside"?
Well.. - I'm.. just trying to explain why you feel dead inside when you watch this movie, or you don't feel excited - even at the end when they have the, big.. celebration? You know, [impression]- [...]
But even at the end when they have the big, like, festival - like-... you're just like.. "So?" So what, there's a midget there now with an eyepatch on, and-... some boring-ass bitch.. gives a frog a glowing ball. Wwhy the fuck do I care?
It's not like the end of the original Star Wars when Luke, Han, and.. Chewbacca, get medals from Princess Leia - it's like, those guys saved the fucking day; what did these guys do? Oh, they resolved a tax dispute...
Plinkett: Ep1
Number 10: Anakin Skywalker
[...]
Oh we're still on this planet are we?
So Qui-Gon manages to pull off the most convoluted bet ever, and somehow wins everything except for Anakin's mother.
Even at the end of the movie when they save the day and probably could get the cash to buy the mom from Watto - they don't go back for ten years.
So - what's going on here?
In one quote, he says "they save the day (at the end of Ep1)", and then in another he says they don't save the day - in contrast to the heroes at the end of EP4 who do save the day.
This is of course a direct self-contradiction;
and between two excerpts that are both talking about Anakin on Tatooine, in the context of the podrace, no less.
Plinkett audio commentary: Ep1
Oh.. - that's a good question, are you here to free the slaves Qui-Gon? No, actually we're.. we're in the process of settling a tax dispute... ohhh.
Yeah I guess freeing slaves would've made a better movie...
it's good we went with something boring, we wouldn't want to excite the audience too much...
So instead of joining the dramatic high-stakes cause of freeing the slaves, Anakin instead joins the undramatic low-stakes cause of settling a tax dispute,
quickly and easily fixing his pod in an undramatic low-stakes fashion, reflecting the undramatic low-stakes nature of said tax dispute where they don't save the day, that is contrasted with the dramatic high-stakes Ep4 ending where they do save the day, and then forgets to return to pick his mom up after saving the day with the tax dispute?
Plinkett audio commentary: SW Ep4
But the real thrust of this scene is, this is when the stakes are really raised - insteada just a giant floating ball in space, we are now shown that the Death Star is capable of blowing up whole planets; and our ragtag group o' heroes are the only ones that can stop it...
Tension, stakes, a ticking clock!; heroism, and adventure - it's what makes Star Wars great.
Much like the Phantom Menace - when the Gungans fight the Robots to help Queen Amidala find the Viceroy, so that she doesn't have to sign a treaty to make the non-violent invasion legal in the courts...
[crickets...] Uhmm.. [..........]
Now it's an "invasion" instead of a "tax dispute", however a "non-violent" one - hence still low-stakes.
Number 6: Invasion! Of Boring
Plinkett: Ep1
Number 10: On to Planet Number 3. Is it time for death yet?
Welcome to Coruscant - home of the mid-air collision; and BORING SCENES.
So the Queen waits around for some kind of approval, o-.. for something, to stop her people from dying- Why are they dying? I guess they're dying though...
But I didn't see anyone die?
In fact I haven't even seen any Naboo citizen at all - as far as I know it's a city with 20 or so pilots, a couple of bureaucrats and officials.
Now there's talk of "people dying" all of a sudden - how "non-violent" was this invasion tax dispute again?
Why are they dying? I guess they're dying though... But I didn't see anyone die?
"I guess x is happening" = treating it as an uncertainty (although arguably also some indifference);
the fact that it isn't shown is presented as a reason for doubting that it's happening (although it could also be referring to presentation - implying that not showing it leads to indifference:
Plinkett: ST Generations
He was trying to save a pre-industrial civilization that we never see... - or care anything about.
);
"why" is literally inquiring about the reasons and causes behind it, but really it also kinda means "why am I supposed to believe that it's happening".
Clearly along with lines like this:
So the Queen waits around for some kind of approval, o-.. for something,
, Plinkett isn't making any moves to go through the movie and analyze the information - instead he's just comically trying to piece together his foggy memories of the plot, while channeling confusion and indifference.
A more proper look at this, one that the review probably should've taken, potentially reveals the source of this uncertainty and confusion:
"How will you explain this invasion to the Senate?"
"The Queen and I will sign a treaty that will legitimize our occupation here - I have assurances it will be ratified by the Senate."
"I will not cooperate."
"Now, now, Your Highness - in time, the suffering of your people will persuade you to see our point of view.
Commander." "Yes, sir." "Process them." "Captain - take them to Camp 4."
Makes what can be called a "credible threat" about doing something to the people.
"Your Highness, under the circumstances, I suggest you come to Coruscant with us."
"Thank you, Ambassador - but my place is with my people."
"They will kill you if you stay."
Sio Bibble: "They wouldn't dare!"
Panaka: "They need her to sign a treaty to make this invasion of theirs legal, they can't afford to kill her!"
"There is something else behind all this, your Highness - there's no logic in the Federation's move here. My feelings tell me they will destroy you."
Here the psychic Jedi senses some lethal intentions on their part, probably making the earlier threats even more credible;
of course Panaka already thinks they're capable of murder - and seconds earlier, Qui-Gon's retort was probably meant to be understood as "they tried to kill us instead":
"Your negotiations seem to have failed, Ambassador."
"The negotiations never took place. It's urgent that we make contact with the Republic."
Either way, now there's a credible threat of "suffering" against the population, and a credible danger of them killing the Queen.
Number 8: I'm gonna slit my wrists
[Sigh...] It's hard to stomach any more of this shit - I still don't know who the main character is and why we should care about any of this.
At around this point in the original Star Wars movie, we've been with Luke almost the whole time getting to know him.
We see his plight;
his hopes and dreams...
we feel his frustration...
and then his sadness...
The slow build-up added depth, and emotion; and anticipation for the story to expand.
In the Phantom Menace we have nothing - we've a monotone queen, who's hiding from signing a treaty that's supposed to do something.
Why in fuck's name should we care at all.. I don't care about any of these characters?
What is the treaty supposed to do again?
Number 6: Invasion! Of Boring
So what exactly is the purpose of this invasion?
It's almost like after Lucas wrote the invasion scenes, he didn't.. really know what to do next? - so he thought he'd make the Queen have to sign a treaty, to make the invasion legal; I mean, why not?
The guys that want this treaty signed (whatever it's about) threaten her with making the people "suffer" - and the content of this treaty is that this faction that threatens the population with suffering while invading, arresting and keeping them as hostages, will get to "legally" stay there with no one doing anything about it.
The stakes of fending these invaders off vs. succumbing to them already seem quite high - and Plinkett is obviously going out of his way to downplay it (if he's remembering it at all, at that moment):
In the Phantom Menace we have nothing - we've a monotone queen, who's hiding from signing a treaty that's supposed to do something.
One might wonder how he managed to miss or forget this; a look at the part where he covers the threat scene, reveals a few things:
Invasion! Of Boring...
Inside the city, Queen Aminalan has been captured by the green guys; but instead of forcing her to sign the treaty right then and there - or keeping her locked up inside the big capital building under heavy guard - they inexplicably send her away from them. ["I will not cooperate." "Now, now, Your Highness - in time, the suffering of your people will persuade you to see our point of view."]
"Commander." "Yes, sir?" "Process them..."
Remember - this is the most important person in their whole plan - and they send her to be... "processed"?, in some place called "Camp 4".
Droid: "Captain - take them to Camp 4."
Ohh; but at least they remember to send her with a whopping 8 battle droids to protect her from the 2 Jedis that they just discussed they had not found yet.
"You didn't tell him about the missing Jedi..." "No need to report that to him, until we have something to report."
But don't worry - these battle droids have proven very effective against Jedi Knights.
So there are 2 alternative options that Plinkett is suggesting the green guys should've gone with, instead of "sending them to Camp 4":
a) "Forcing her to sign the treaty right then and there" - this is of course in the very scene where they're expressing the threat against her population if she doesn't sign it.
While it's possible to speculate about what other more direct forms of force or coercion they could've applied there to accomplish it "right then and there", these pseudo-euphemistic threats against the population are the method of coercion they're going with here, and it's not clear whether Plinkett is even aware of this at all.
b) "Keeping her locked up in the Palace instead of sending them away, where the 2 Jedi could jump in."
This is correct - however his focus on just this one aspect of this scene causes him to talk over the part where Gunray is verbalizing his threat, and only turn on the sound right after, when Nute moves to the "Camp 4" part:
they inexplicably send her away from them. ["I will not cooperate." "Now, now, Your Highness - in time, the suffering of your people will persuade you to see our point of view."]
"Commander." "Yes, sir?" "Process them..."
So now as a result, Plinkett is talking over the part where Nute is issuing his threat to the Queen, saying how they should force the Queen to sign the treaty "right then and there"...
And, this of course also facilitates the massive downplaying of this situation later in the review:
Number 8: I'm gonna slit my wrists
In the Phantom Menace we have nothing - we've a monotone queen, who's hiding from signing a treaty that's supposed to do something.
Why in fuck's name should we care at all..
Now they escape the planet instead of "cooperating", so the possibility arises that the Trade Federation might repeat their threats a bit more emphatically, or even start making them real in order to exact pressure:
"The death toll is catastrophic... We must bow to their wishes! You must contact me!"
"It's a trick. Send no reply - send no transmissions of any kind."
"It sounds like bait to establish a connection trace."
"What if it is true - and the people are dying?"
"Either way, we're running out of time."
So now it sounds like they're making it real - "catastrophic death tolls".
Going a step further however, instead of merely exacting that pressure, they're also trying to trace them in case they merely decide to just reply at first - even if they refused to "bow to their wishes" at first, they'd already betray their location.
The "bait" conclusion is stated with a high level of certainty here - and is in fact immediately confirmed to be real, even if the details of it seem inconsistent and confusing (since the ship didn't reply, but Darth Maul still has a trace?):
"Tatooine is sparsely populated - if the trace was correct, I will find them quickly, Master."
However the possibility that the assertion about the "death tolls" might still be true, is left up in the air - the Jedi / Queen don't know, and the audience isn't clued in either.
That is until they've left Tatooine for Coruscant, where it's then also confirmed as true:
"Your Queen is lost, your people are starving... and you, Governor, are going to die much sooner than your people I'm afraid..."
"This invasion will gain you nothing! We're a democracy - the people have decided!"
"Take him away."
However upon a closer look, 2 factors still cause a certain amount of doubt, or uncertainty:
1) Technically the only thing that's confirmed here is that Bibble hadn't been made to lie, and in fact does believe that "the people are starving" (or at least isn't shown doubting it)- however he's shown to be alone with Gunray and some of his droids in what looks like an empty part of the palace; if this is representative of his general situation, and he's being kept here isolated while being told about mass starvation, how is it a certainty that he's not being lied to as well?
Perhaps the movie isn't thinking that far, and considers the confirmation that he was being honest and hadn't been performing under pressure or threats, as an automatic confirmation that it's all true - however it's not clear.
2) "The people have decided"? This makes it sound as if the pressure is being applied to the population itself, to presumably accept the Trade Federation as their new rulers - as opposed to the Queen or even him or any of the other remaining officials to "sign the treaty".
So some kind of different thing seems to be going on here, and this casts doubts on whether this scene even takes place in the same continuity, or might be from a different script version.
However, the very next scene it cuts back to the ship, and Padme is replaying a recording of his message (not having seen it herself while on Tatooine) - and, with no thoughts given to it having been a confirmed trick, and possibly untrue, seems to believe it without question:
"The death toll is catastrophic! We must bow to their wishes! You must contact me!"
"You all right?"
"It's very cold."
"You come from a warm planet, Ani - a little too warm for my taste. Space is cold."
"You seem sad..."
"The Queen is worried - her people are suffering, dying...
She must convince the Senate to intervene, or... I'm not sure what'll happen."
It seems like the moment it's "confimed" to the audience via a villain cut-away, the protagonists now automatically start treating it as true as well.
Plinkett audio commentary: Ep1
the audience knows - but he doesn't know.
This continues into this later scene:
"The Courts take even longer to decide things than the Senate! Our people are dying, Senator - we must do something quickly to stop the Federation!"
"To be realistic, Your Majesty... I think we're going to have to accept Federation control for the time being."
"That is something I cannot do."
Later in the Senate session, even before anyone mentions anything about death tolls, the very notion of the invasion is already placed under doubt:
"Honourable representatives of the Republic - I come to you under the gravest of circumstances. The Naboo system has been invaded by the droid armies of the Trade-"
"I object! There is no proof! This is incredible... We recommend a commission be sent to Naboo to ascertain the truth!"
"The Congress of Malastare concurs with the honourable delegate from the Trade Federation - a commission must be appointed!"
"The point..."
Mas Amedda: "Excuse me, Chancellor."
"Enter the bureaucrats - the true rulers of the Republic; and on the payroll of the Trade Federation, I might add. This is where Chancellor Valorum's strength will disappear."
"The point is conceded. Will you defer your motion to allow a commission to explore the validity of your accusations?"
Initially by bad actors, of course - and Valorum seems to be under pressure to act like he's sharing or at least respecting these doubts:
Number 3: Death and Space Taxes
At the end of the movie, Amidalen goes back to the planet to solve the problem herself - cause the Senate wanted to send an independent team to investigate whether or not the invasion was real.
"Will you defer your motion to allow a commission to explore the validity of your accusations?"
I guess the testimony of two Jedi Knights wasn't good enough; [Qui-Gon talking to Valorum on the Coruscant platform] those were the guys that Valorum trusted enough to settle the whole dispute in the first place? That don't make sense?..
However the Malastare speaker may or may not be genuine, and generally the Senate is not presented with any additional proof for these allegations;
could the Jedi have been used as witnesses, given how they had been sent in "secret" to begin with?
"the Supreme Chancellor has secretly dispatched two Jedi Knights, the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, to settle the conflict...."
Given how backed into the corner the Valorum is,
"Chancellor Valorum seems to think there is hope?" "If I may say so, Your Majesty, the Chancellor has little real power - he is mired by baseless accusations of corruption; the bureaucrats are in charge now."
probably not.
Then, after all the preceding interruptions, Amidala finally brings up the deathtolls - stating it as fact (even though she has no reason to be certain, unlike the invasion and "attack on sovereignty" itself):
"I will not defer - I've come before you to resolve this attack on our sovereignty NOW. I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die, while you discuss this invasion in a committee!"
Proof or reason aside, the room is instantly won over and apparently has no doubts left.
"Yousa tinking yousa people ganna die?"
"I don't know..."
"Gungans get pasted too, eh?"
"I hope not."
In this scene it's not clear whether Jar Jar is just getting things wrong and she's merely humoring him, or whether this talk about "gonna die" (as opposed to already dying in the present - does this mean he's asking if they're all gonna eventually die?) and her uncertain response ("don't know whether they'll all die before they can intervene"?) are rather, again, from yet another alternate continuity / script version,
where the Neimoidians haven't yet started claiming to be already causing death tolls, but are rather threatening that they'll genocide them all if their demands aren't met - and that Amidala doesn't really know if that's gonna happen or not, if they'll manage to prevent it or not.
"I fear by the time you have control of the bureaucrats, Senator - there'll be nothing left of our people, our way of life."
"I understand your concern, Your Majesty - unfortunately, the Federation has possession of our planet."
"Senator - this is your arena; I feel I must return to mine.
I've decided to go back to Naboo."
"Go back? But your Majesty, be realistic, th-they'll force you to sign the treaty!"
"I will sign no treaty, Senator. My fate will be no different than that of our people."
Apparently Palpatine agrees with Plinkett that they could potentially apply some more direct and successful form of "force" here - since otherwise the pressure they're applying now (causing those "death tolls") isn't going to fundamentally change if she returns.
Apparently the talk is about them threatening her directly, which she responds with "my fate won't be different than the people's.
However this line here:
"I fear by the time you have control of the bureaucrats, Senator - there'll be nothing left of our people, our way of life."
once again casts doubts on what is being referred to, or which script version continuity is currently on display - especially if compared to this:
"The Trade Federation has destroyed all that we have worked so hard to build - if we do not act quickly, all will be lost forever."
What have they "worked hard to build"? And what "way of life"?
Before that it was all about drastic life-and-death issues - however these lines, esp. in a vacuum, rather make it sound like the Federation is just eroding their culture/projects/values/sovereignty/spirit/etc. which is worth fighting for, but isn't blotted out by the even a lot worse CATASTROPHIC DEATH TOLLS.
Back here on Naboo, however, things seemingly undergo another shift - after the somber tone of the Coruscant stay, where one might say depressing notions about death tolls matched the general mood, here in this new chapter the tone is upbeat and optimistic, and perhaps for this reason nothing more about any deaths is brought up again:
"What is the situation?"
Panaka: "Almost everyone's in camps.
A few hundred police and guards formed an underground resistance movement. I brought back as many of the leaders as I could.
The Federation army's also much larger than we thought - and much stronger. Your Highness, this is a battle I do not think that we can win."
"Almost everyone's in camps", but that's all he says.
No one cares to find out whether
"What if it is true - and the people are dying?"
It's never confirmed, nor refuted, nor ruled out - just no longer mentioned.
However at the very least, at this point they're already firmly planning to end this occupation, and now have the means to do it (more on the confused unclarities regarding this aspect at some later point) - they're no longer faced with the decision to either contact Sio Bibble and potentially expose themselves, or accept further death tolls; and no longer powerlessly stuck on Coruscant hoping the government does something; now there's just one way forward.
So does that somewhat account for all of this? Well, somewhat, sure, appears so.
Earlier, they checked on the Gungan city - and there, Panaka did voice speculations about what might've happened to them:
Obi-Wan: "Do you think they have been taken to the camps?"
Panaka: "More likely they were wiped out."
"Mesa no tink so."
Qui-Gon: "Do you know where they are, Jar Jar?"
However that was of course instantly resolved.
Ultimately, between its different "chapter", this movie has a noticeable cognitive dissonance about how high these particular stakes are:
at first a threat is made;
then the villains claim to have started making the threat real, however they're using that as a trap in order to trace them - creating a sense of creeping uncertainty about it all, as Darth Maul is closing in on them;
then once "the audience is shown", everyone starts treating it as a fact, in the context of the somber tone of the Coruscant stay;
and finally it all gives way to an upbeat tone during which this notion softly disappears from the narrative, and the lines that are used to refer to the nature of the occupation are now much more compatible with the notion that this is a:
Tension, stakes, a ticking clock!; heroism, and adventure - it's what makes Star Wars great.
Much like the Phantom Menace - when the Gungans fight the Robots to help Queen Amidala find the Viceroy, so that she doesn't have to sign a treaty to make the non-violent invasion legal in the courts...
However while it's possible to view this all as a fragmented combination of several mutually continuities, it also remains true that Gunray had expressed a violent threat, the protagonists were shortly after given the impression that he may very well have started putting it into practice, this was then "all but confirmed" by the cut to Sio Bibble on Naboo (though only to the viewers, not the protagonists), and then none of this was ever explicitly contradicted, or ruled out - even not by all the lines that, in isolation, would make a very different impression.
The selective memory of these lines seems to be the basis for this "non-violent invasion" comment - without the realization that they are effectively refuted by all the other (much more emphasized and explicit) parts that indicate a violent one (or, at the very least, one in which a mass starvation is induced);
an equivalent, albeit a very disproportionate one, would be if someone selectively remembered these lines from Ep4's black roundtable here:
"The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us; I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the old Republic have been swept away."
"That's impossible! How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?"
"The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line - fear of this battle station."
"And what of the Rebellion? If the Rebels have obtained a complete technical readout of this station, it is possible, however unlikely, that they might find a weakness and exploit it."
"The plans you refer to will soon be back in our hands."
"Any attack made by the rebels against this station"
Never mind the "fear of this battle station" or "attacks" or "
This scene is pretty important to the plot, but it's really just there to engage an element they call the "ticking clock" - it's a basic function used to create tension in a story. They almost have the Death Star ready; it's ready to shoot giant lasers, and they plan to use it to crush the Rebellion - by destroying their hidden base.
; the plot of this movie is about governors non-violently controlling their local territories while non-violent rebels want to exploit the technical readouts of a station.
While obviously some "citizens" are eventually shown in the celebration at the end, the closest the movie ever gets to "showing anyone die", or confirming that it's taking place, is by showing Nute Gunray bringing it up to Sio Bibble who's acting like he accepts it as true (with the possibility that he's seen it not ruled out, but not confirmed either), and otherwise by having Padme believe his hologram transmission after that palace scene (although before that, the very same message was explicitly doubted).
Why are they dying? I guess they're dying though...
It looks like Plinkett is remembering the Padme lines, but not why she believes it's taking place, or what the cause of it is supposed to be in the first place;
obviously the answer to the first question is that "she's believing the governor's hologram message", and the answer to the second question is "because Gunray is trying to pressure her into agreeing to that treaty".
His uncertainty seems to primarily stem from ignoring and forgetting the information in the movie instead of going through it properly - however if he had gone through it, he would've also found a degree of uncertainty surrounding this: first as a direct part of the plot,
later in the form of residual doubts about how much of a "confirmation" the Bibble/Gunray scene is supposed to be (followed by Padme's sudden acceptance of his claims without learning anything new since it had been determined as dubious),
and eventually by the seeming dissonance created by lines that convey a milder version of the events and cast doubts on this plotline's internal continuity.
It's possible that this actual uncertainty created by the film subconsciously contributed to his uncertainty in some ways as well, in addition to him just not remembering stuff.
I guess they're dying though...
This seems like a casual acceptance of her claims - which coincides both with Padme's (unjustified, by rational metrics) acceptance of Sio's "death tolls" claim in the message, and the film's largely overwhelming (but not full) confirmation that it it was in fact true,
and, once again, may have been subconsciously influenced by that angle, but isn't directly based on any precise analysis or recollection of those elements.
Aside from all this, his indifferent and semi-dismissive tone is also incongruent with, and unrepresentative of the dramatic intensity that those scenes are presented with - even if going farther with it (say, for starters, by showing any "Naboo citizens" before the very last scene) could have increased this intensity further.
Jumping to the preceding step of the Neimoidian's master plan -
But the conflict from the blockade and the subsequent invasion
:
Number 11: Please, God - make it stop. Make it end.
I mean I know George wanted the Jedis to fight in a cool place that's really Star Warsy? - so.. so what this is like a power generator? What does it power, the Universe??
So you're expecting me to believe that the people that built this technological wonder were dying without space supplies for 2 days??
Number 3: Death and Space Taxes
So the Trade Federation have set up a blockade around... Naboo, in order to stop them from getting space supplies - which instantly causes some kinda... crisis? - that we never see.
[...]
Anyways, so I realize that Senator Palpatine was using the Trade Federation to create a crisis to advance himself politically; like that was the plot I think? But the conflict from the blockade and the subsequent invasion is the entire movie! Understanding what role the Trade Federation played in this, is important...
You know what the blockade was about, who was getting taxed, what kinda supplies were so crucial to the Naboo - what was it, like medical supplies? Just some kinda plague? Did they not have the capacity to survive on such a lush planet with a huge power reactor for one day without space trade?
You see I would've accepted the idea of some kinda mystery villain if the basics were at least clear...
Both when discussing the invasion as well as the preceding blockade, Plinkett consistently doesn't bother with going through the available information (while already not remembering it properly to begin with, naturally) - however for some reason the two instances are given the polar opposite treatment:
While seemingly intent on downplaying/doubting/denying the "death tolls" and high stakes of the invasion (or, more specifically, Gunray's methods of trying to force the treaty agreement) way beyond the residual amount of uncertainty left by the information in the film,
the effects of the blockade are instead being vastly overblown here not based on anything in the script.
"Hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly battleships, the greedy Trade Federation has stopped all shipping to the small planet of Naboo.
While the Congress of the Republic endlessly debates this alarming chain of events,"
"Deadly battleships" implies potential danger, and "alarming" just means that everyone is "alarmed" by this (easily explainable by it being perceived as a "bold move", or something people hadn't been sure was legal to begin with - judging by Gunray's emphatic insistence that it is "perfectly legal", and Sidious' ability to "make things legal" that weren't so before) - no resulting high-stakes crisis is implied by this at all; let alone one emerging after just a few days.
So the Trade Federation have set up a blockade around... Naboo, in order to stop them from getting space supplies - which instantly causes some kinda... crisis? - that we never see.
The bolded part is invented; "we never see it", nor does anyone imply it's taking place at all, or behave as if it does.
"Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute."
"Supreme Chancellor, delegates of the Senate - a tragedy has occurred, which started right here with the taxation of trade routes, and has now engulfed our entire planet in the oppression of the Trade Federation."
The "trade/taxation dispute" has long escalated into the blockade before the movie even begins - which then escalates into the invasion a few minutes into said movie; the threats against the population start shortly after, eventually followed by the Governor's distress message.
Somehow during those segments of the audio commentary, Plinkett seems to have forgotten all about this, and apparently thinks that the "tax dispute" is still the full extent of what's at stake at any point after the 1st paragraph of the opening crawl:
You know, []- [...]
All in all, on a general dementia--accuracy spectrum, Plinkett's commentary on this aspect of the plot keeps oscillating between these cases of sincere amnesia on the one side, and this bit on the other side:
So the Queen waits around for some kind of approval, o-.. for something, to stop her people from dying- Why are they dying? I guess they're dying though...
But I didn't see anyone die?
In fact I haven't even seen any Naboo citizen at all - as far as I know it's a city with 20 or so pilots, a couple of bureaucrats and officials.
This is the closest he ever comes to being "accurate", and it's still very far.
However while leaving out all the most dramatic scenes revolving around this, he also imagines a mass death crisis on Naboo caused by the pre-invasion blockade;
it's possible that this is him misattributing Padme's "people are dying" lines to the blockade and the resulting lack of space supplies - perhaps even forgetting that a subsequent invasion occurred at all, in those excerpts that is.
Number 8: I'm gonna slit my wrists
[Sigh...] It's hard to stomach any more of this shit - I still don't know who the main character is and why we should care about any of this.
At around this point in the original Star Wars movie, we've been with Luke almost the whole time getting to know him.
We see his plight;
his hopes and dreams...
we feel his frustration...
and then his sadness...
Plinkett audio commentary: Ep1
But even at the end when they have the big, like, festival - like-... you're just like.. "So?" So what, there's a midget there now with an eyepatch on, and-... some boring-ass bitch.. gives a frog a glowing ball. Wwhy the fuck do I care?
It's not like the end of the original Star Wars when Luke, Han, and.. Chewbacca, get medals from Princess Leia - it's like, those guys saved the fucking day; what did these guys do? Oh, they resolved a tax dispute...
Plinkett audio commentary: Ep4
Since all the segments with the direct Ep4 comparisons happen to be the amnesia ones, this causes the Ep1-Ep4 stakes comparisons to completely fall apart - as opposed to partially/overwhelmingly fall apart, if the less amnesia segments had been used instead.

2023.03.25 04:31 Righteous_Fury224 Yesterday’s Hero – Book 2 – Signs and Portents – Chapter 4 - I like the Way You Move – Part 8

2181 – 09:17, Wednesday, January 17th –Agora of the Asari People- Serrice City - Thessia – Parnithia System
"It's done," said Nari in a faint croaking voice as she took a few shaky steps back from her magnum opus – a mural that depicted horror yet hope in the image.
"Easy there Nari," said Sam'nelea gently as she caught the exhausted artist in her arms. Mayises and Miretse rushed up and helped Sam'nelea carry Nari to a chair, giving her a bottle of energy drink so the exhausted artist could at least rehydrate.
"So it is finished Colonel T'goos?," asked Matriarch Seucsha T'sola as she called from behind the barrier that shielded the work from viewing.
"Yes Matriarch. Please, come and see Nari's masterpiece," replied Sam'nelea as she held Nari's head so that the shattered artist could drink.
Mayises was holding the bottle for Nari who swallowed greedily at the nourishing refreshing liquid. She had worked almost 18 hours a day on the mural, only stopping to rest when Sam'nelea forced her to. Even then it was barely enough yet Nari found an inner strength that Sam'nelea and her commandos could but only admire at the artists determination to complete this work.
Matriarch Seucsha T'sola of Serrice had also deployed her commandos to guard Nari and her work. The Serricean matriarch had seen the images of the horror under Fortress T'reaphia and was physically sick afterwards. Nothing like this had ever been seen on Thessia… ever. Asari had a dark side, that was undisputable but this… this was pure evil.
"Dear goddess!" she gasped as she and her senior officers came around the corner and saw the mural. There was cries of shock, anger, revulsion, despair and sadness from all when they saw what Nari had painted. Nari had also carved in bright red sandstone that sat above the mural, the High Thessian pictograms for the words: NEVER FORGET!
Sam'nelea surveyed the artwork with a studious glance. She could see that Nari had been heavily influenced by human art, so very obviously in this case as Nari's mural was a homage to both Picassos "Guernica" and Munch's "The Scream" but balanced by Van Gogh's "Starry Night" for the idea that hope still existed.
Sam'nelea had seen those artworks herself on Earth and was deeply moved by them and appreciated what Nari had incorporated into her mural.
Duncan's influence was evident for those who knew the friendship between the artist and the man who lived twice. The Commando officer was aware of that he had been showing Nari the best of human art.
"What a lurid, emotive, extremely confronting work," murmured Matriarch T'sola as she stared at it awestruck. A tear of empathy had trickled down her flawless lavender cheek. "This will be a testament as long as the Agora of the People stands." Her officers nodded in assent, too moved to speak themselves. "Did you see it, Sam?" she asked quietly.
"No matriarch and I thank all the deities and the universe that I didn't. I saw some of the footage that my matriarch displayed to all of you. That was enough. Even now, the Acolytes and house troopers who were there are still undergoing mental therapy for the trauma they were exposed to."
"And your War Artist? Will she be whole again?" the matriarch inquired with compassion for Nari in her eyes.
"I believe, no… I know she will be fine. Nari is one of the strongest Asari I have met. Her mental drive and fortitude allowed her to produce this masterwork in just over ten days. She barely slept and only rested, ate and drank when I forced her too. Look, she has passed out from exhaustion," said Sam'nelea with a sad resonate tone with deep sympathy in her eyes for her new friend. "She is a true hero of the Asari People matriarch. Not one of valour and great deeds of action, but of her strength of spirit and her artist talent. Let that be known in Serrice."
The Serricean matriarch nodded in total agreement.
"Her work will last for all time. Go home Sam. You, Nari and your commandos have done enough. I will post guards here on permanent duty. Fiahnni can send some across to be part of the guard who protect this… lesson to us all. We will invite other matriarchs to send their house troops to become a part of the detachment. I will house and feed them all. This will be a sacred duty, separate from being guards here at the Agora. This will be our privilege and duty to all the Asari people."
Matriarch Seucsha T'sola nodded once more to herself, knowing that only just over half of the republics would contribute troops to this force. The others like the Armali would prevaricate and dither, ultimately sending nothing which in all honestly, she was fine with. Less in the end for her to pay for and more glory to those that did contribute.
"As you command matriarch and thank you for all you support and aid. It is greatly appreciated." Sam'nelea gestured to her commando lieutenants and bring Nari's sleeping form with them. "I need to see my daughters and husband," she said tiredly.
Matriarch T'sola gave the Colonel at questioning look.
"I must ask Sam… what is it like being loved by a human male? I truly wish to know as I am considering my…options for a new partner."
Sam'nelea paused for a moment and thought about how to respond.
"Matriarch… I cannot answer that with any real ease in such a short space of time. All I can say is that Phillipe completes me. I met him almost twenty years ago and have never found a more loving, wonderful soul to share my life with and have daughters by. I wish Tevura's blessing upon you if you truly wish to find love with a man. It is challenging as you would understand yet… so rewarding as well once you have melded and know beyond any doubt that he is yours and you are his. I love him with every fibre of my being. We are one. Now… I should go," she said with a sigh as thoughts of her beloved husband threatened to engulf her.
"Be at peace Sam and Athame bless you," replied Matriarch T'sola with a soft smile as she considered Sam'nelea's words very carefully.
Sam'nelea, along with Dr Hethy and a few hundred others were some of the originals who bonded with humans. They were not the first but still, those individuals who in 2161, formed a coterie of Asari which became bonded to humans that year, changing Asari society forever. She vaguely recalled that one of her own junior clerical diplomats based at the Citadel bonded with a famous human male artist yet she couldn't recall their names off hand. No matter, the unions that worked were true examples of love crossing cultural and species lines. Fiahnni was right, Humanity and Asari would be one people in the end.
Seucsha signalled to her senior officers and Acolytes, that they take over from the departing T'daari forces. She also began considering her options of looking for a potential consort from the pool of humanity. The matriarch needed someone she could confide in, who would hold and love her in the dark of the night. She felt too lonely these days and taking an Acolyte to her bed had lost its allure as it was just sex for sex's sake, nothing more. Seucsha needed companionship more than ever after seeing Nari's work. The matriarch made up her mind, she would find her Siame in humanity.
Maybe a young man like the musical Maestro Matriarch Jami Sibeyr had found with her young human Siame? she considered.
Seucsha decided that she needed to speak with the Maestro to gain more insight. She concluded that a young man would last the time with her for her remaining years, they would grow old together which was a great comfort to her as the thought of outliving another bondmate would be too much for her to bare. The matriarch mused to herself that she might even have another daughter with him. They could at least try, after all Benezia T'Soni had her little Liara only eighty or so years ago. That had been the subject of much gossip within the conclave of matriarchs.
She turned away and began humming the maestro's beautifully soaring piece to herself. "A Love Song for Humanity" which was universally recognised as one of the greatest pieces of Asari music which had been created in generations. Now she began to see why, as she reflected upon what she had observed of Fiahnni's daughters and their relationship with Duncan Larkin.
Pity he was taken, she thought to herself as she left the building to board her waiting air-transporter, he would have made an excellent bondmate and consort.
The gull wing doors of her vehicle closed and as she was whisked away into the busy sky. She sat back into the plush soft leather seats and began opening the Matchmaking site, "Blue to Hue" on her datapad.
What charmed her the most, making her laugh and dispelling the awful visions of the horror that Nari had depicted, was that a classic human song started playing as soon as the Extranet site opened up on her data pad. She knew of this song and smiled widely in approval.
Queen's "Somebody to Love" was a perfect complement for the matchmaking site.
The 894 year old matriarch now began examining the hundreds of thousands of hopeful men who had listed themselves and had been ever so carefully screened as potential bondmates to Asari by the managers of the matchmaking site.
She had time and options and she was now looking forwards to Fiahnni's daughter's fashion show.
So much fun to be had!

2181 – Friday - January 19 – 19:30 – Lyriania's Memorial Amphitheatre – Dassus City
Lileah'sah peeked out from behind the huge gauze stage curtain, over the massive crowd that had filled the amphitheatre with pride and amazement.
"I still can't believe it," she said quietly to Duncan as they observed the full venue from the wings of the stage.
He held her in front of him, his arms wrapping over hers, around her waist and linking over her belly comfortably. She loved that. Turning her head, she laid her left cheek against his chest so as not to poke him with the tendrils of her crest. It was the only thing she thought that humans had as a minor physical advantage over Asari, they had no crest at the back of their heads that could get in the way of things.
"Believe it my love. Our terrific Tre'mete has done it. Tonight is going to make her a legend. She deserves this."
Lileah'sah turned in his arms and looked up at him with a hint of self-doubt in her eyes.
"I know. Although a part of me feels shame Duncan. I should have done this decades ago for her yet I didn't. I was a selfish, self-centred, spoilt stupid maiden, too wrapped up in her own Varen-shit to do the right thing by the one who had always loved me for who I was. Tre'mete only ever wanted me to love her. You did this for her, not me," she said with a heavy sigh and laid her head back on his chest once more.
Duncan cuddled her tenderly.
"Hey there sweetness, you have helped our crazy mad amazing seamstress and bondmate. You have been her tower of strength through this. You have been at her side all the way, helping her with the business side of things. She couldn't have done this without you. Yes I have been the catalyst that brought this into existence but you my magnificent, musical healer, you were the one who made it all happen. Tre' would have been lost without your family connections. No one would have taken her seriously if not for you going to all those meetings with her. Now she is on the cusp of her triumph and we will celebrate like never before. Look, all our family are here, all our friends too. Tre'mete has worked herself hard and I think it was a stroke of genius that she got everyone in the crew, plus our friends children to be models for her garments tonight."
"Again you are correct my dearest darling man. Their Aretḗ is going to only soar after tonight. And Chianay and Elanini… goddess… I would never have thought that my beloved cousins would be fashion models," she giggled lightly.
It had taken the trio plus Chianay and Ray a lot of diligent work to finally persuade the shy, bookish Intelligence Analyst to model some of Tre'mete's clothing tonight. Elanini would be modelling the more demure and reserved lines of garments that Tre'mete had designed, clothing suited for Asari of Elanini's demeanour. The normally quiet Asari was now abuzz with excitement and nervous energy. Ray spoke to her in her aural bud.
"Remember Ela', you are beautiful, powerful and strong. All eyes will be on you but you will see none as you will be bathed in glorious light. Consider this a simple walk in the sunshine wearing fine clothing that your cousin has made for you."
"Thank you Ray. I am glad you are with me. I couldn't have done this without you."
"You are my family Ela' and my friend and I will do anything for you," said Ray humbly and meant every word.
Elanini blew a gentle kiss to one of the security cameras, knowing that Ray was watching her like a guardian angel. Chianay hugged her younger sister in a sign of affectionate support.
The AI along with Luenthvi were the masters behind the curtain, controlling all aspects of the upcoming show. Luenthvi was in the control room supervising the sound and lighting engineers and technicians in conjunction with Ray. Both Asari and AI had planned everything down to the last detail with Tre'mete, leaving nothing to chance. She got the two minute signal.
"Alright everyone, game faces on, it's showtime!" she said in a quiet yet commanding voice.
The Asari engineers and technicians nodded and began their final prechecks of all the systems.
A few minutes earlier, Fiahnni, Aenthiah and Raquelia, the family and close friends had been the last to enter the amphitheatre. A soaring glorious composition of human music rang out as the trio of Asari gracefully made their way through the building. Fiahnni had fallen in love with Händel's "Messiah" recently and shamelessly appropriated various pieces from the opera for herself. Her people loved it.
Jonah, Lomu, Di'naka and Nyanyzia flanked the Grand Matriarch, Fiahnni and Aenthiah. All the bodyguards resplendent in gleaming ceremonial yet fully functional battle armour.
Drokk led them all.
The Battlemaster's face was a picture of serenity as he quietly basked in the triumph of his clan. Krogan were ascendant, well at least in the republic of Dassus and only his clan but details, details he thought to himself with a gleeful inner smile. It was a start he mused to himself.
A storm of applause went up for the Grand Matriarch and Fiahnni, with people rising to their seats and cheering. They all knew what had happened two weeks prior; that the T'daari had shielded the people of Dassus from harm, had struck back at their hated enemies and triumphed, liberating the republic of Ulee from tyranny and returned it back to the rule of the people, by the people for the people. These were deeds worthy of song and celebration.
Fiahnni and Raquelia waved and smiled to their people who roared back with approval.
Behind them walked Kash'shara and Tito with Mirey and Hiroko by their sides. The rest of the family followed including Chianay and Elanini's mother, Sister Shaellei T'daari as well as other lesser relatives of the clan. Behind them came the human families as well as the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, with the senior Acolytes and staff of House T'daari bringing up the end of the procession.
There was a mild degree of puzzlement in the crowd as they wondered amongst themselves where Lileah'sah and Duncan were and why they were not walking with the first family of Dassus? The reason, only known to the immediate family, was that Duncan had insisted that the couple didn't as he wanted the family to receive the ovation, not him. Also Lileah'sah and he were to open the show with some words of welcome to the audience.
Lileah'sah, while wanting him to be cheered, understood. In many ways such public ovations actually embarrassed Duncan. He almost hated them and avoided them as much as he could. It was enough for him to have done good for no acknowledgement as he followed the teachings of Marcus Aurelias in that fashion as best he could.
"We ought to do good to others as simply as a horse runs, or a bee makes honey, or a vine bears grapes season after season without thinking of the grapes it has borne." - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book Five
Lileah'sah now embraced that maxim for herself. Tre'mete was still on her journey in this regard yet Duncan and herself knew their bondmate would get there soon enough.
Everyone now settled in their seats and the murmuring of the crowd died down.
The lights dimmed down to nothing, blackness engulfing the massive space with only the safety lights running along the stairways visible.
"It's time love," whispered Duncan as he took her left hand in his right. She nodded, gave his hand a squeeze and led him out.
They followed the faint light trail out onto the stage and made their way to their mark.
The spotlights came on a few seconds later, bathing the couple in a soft warm glow rather than a harsh bright white light.
"Good eve to you all, distinguished matriarchs, Justicars, honoured guests and gentle beings and welcome one and all. Tonight you are going to witness a watershed moment in Asari society. Tre'mete Lira, my best friend, my darling lover, my bond and soul mate has been inspired to follow her dream by my other magnificent bond and soul mate, Duncan Larkin. He has given her the wings in which she now will soar with. I present to you all, the first ever collection from Saucy Secrets. Thank you."
Lileah'sah bowed her head while Duncan just nodded briefly to the applause from the audience.
The lights dimmed again as the couple left the stage and went back to the wings.
The stage had been configured to be a massive runway, twenty meters in length and four meters wide, running into the heart of the audience. Lights appeared around the edge of the stage as the main gauze curtain rose.
The raising curtain revealed a full traditional thirty three member Asari orchestra, standing ready behind their ancient traditional Gal'lungael percussion instruments and drums.
Smoke machine expelled their scented, fragrant contents into the air and tiny particles of glitter fell from the domed ceiling, creating a myriad of sparkling motes of light that dazzled the senses.
The music started.
A resoundingly massive explosive thunderclap initially startled the audience was immediately followed by an ancient time-honoured piece of Asari ageless battle music which opened the show.
The drumming and rhythmical percussion started, the Asari musicians all acting in perfect harmony as they expertly pounded out the ancient song on their traditional instruments and drums. Blue Biotic auras flared up from the Asari musicians as they merged their fields with the instruments, creating intricate resonating cascades of interweaving harmonics.
The Asari orchestra then chanted out the archaic words, lifted together in glorious song:
"We are here, We are alive, We exist, We are One!".
All Asari knew this piece as it was timeless, a musical racial memory that reached back into their mists of their distant past, passed down from mother to daughter, generation to generation, yay unto the very first Asari who could remember who she was.
It was burned into the very DNA and souls of the Asari people.
All the Asari in the amphitheatre instinctively sang at the top of their voices, joining in the ancient song unconsciously. The Asari joyously sang out loudly and passionately, feeling the moment and its significance upon them.
This was the ultimate signifier of change, of death and rebirth, the end of old things, the dying of the light and the dawn of the beginning of new ideas.
The future is always born in conflict and pain. Change is inevitable.
Tre'mete was creating a massive statement to her people, the times were indeed "a changing".
The song concluded with a finale crescendo that resonated hugely within the amphitheatre.
As soon as the piece had finished, the spectators thundered out with massive approval, standing, cheering, clapping and shouting as this had not been performed in living memory to a live audience. And not a single garment had been displayed yet.
The lights dimmed once more and the audience settled back into their seats, all abuzz now as this was not your usual fashion show. This was art.
A new, more modern composition of Asari music began, starting softly yet building up, swelling with intensity and passion.
The lights focused on the stage and out strode a supremely confident Olivia McAlpine, dressed impeccably in an amazing ensemble that shouted style, elegance, charm and suitability for a young teenage maiden Asari.
Olivia was followed by her faithful companion Zara Wattling then Eliza Percy and finally Sam'nelea's daughters Gabriella and Triana Aguilar. All the Asari teenagers beamed their dazzling smiles to the roar of approval of the crowd as they strode down the runway. Already Asari matrons in the audience and those watching live began to place orders for these clothes for their young daughters as the garments looked so lovely yet sturdy and comfortable, perfect for a growing young Asari.
The teens paraded down the runway, stepping in time to the soaring music. Each stopped at the end, striking a series of poses before sauntering back to the stage as though it was just another day walking in the park.
The music shifted into a more militaristic themed tune.
Tre'mete had asked her comrades from the Perihelion if they would model for her. All stepped forward without a moment of hesitation.
Lead proudly by Captain Eshess, the elite crew marched out to the deafening hailing of the audience. New ceremonial parade uniforms for the Dassus Navy were on display and by the goddess they looked good was the consensus. Tre'mete came up with this herself as she knew that military contracts were always a big money earner. She would win it on merit, not her family connections. Tre'mete knew that her fellow commandos and Navy personnel would clamour for these new uniforms.
The crew all marched casually, with smiles all alight on their beautiful faces, waving to the cheering crowd. They looked magnificent as they filed down the runway.
As the last crew member departed the stage, new music followed the last piece.
Stepping into the light came Icilea and Heretonia, hand in hand with Pania Paewai and Emily Percy, Human and Turian together, an unmistakable symbol of the end of the enmity and the beginning of deep and enduring friendship between the species.
A huge roar of approval went up from everyone in the amphitheatre. A masterstroke of galactical political genius by Tre'mete and the T'daari family. An emblem of harmony and reconciliation which would hopefully resonate beyond Thessia.
The Turian females wore long elegant blue and silver gowns that perfectly suited their body structure and morphology while the young human women were clothed in similar Thessian Glitterwing black silk ball gowns, yet theirs were cut with plunging necklines and slit just enough on one side to reveal their shapely, long legs much to the salacious delight of all the Asari watching.
The four graceful beings made their way down the runway, gently waving and smiling to the audience who lustily cheered them on. Orders from the hundreds of thousands of Turian females who had made their home on Thessia began flowing in as well as the tens of thousands of human women watching who were also Thessian citizens, both species bonded to Asari.
Tre'mete, who was watching from the wings, saw on her data pad the stream of tens of thousands of orders which were flooding Saucy Secret's Extranet site.
She, Ray and Duncan had planned for this. Ray had networks of extra server farms to handle the deluge of incoming traffic. If they hadn't have done this, the whole site would have crashed leaving tens of thousands of potential customers angry and upset.
The brawny commando felt her bondmates gather her in their arms and she sighed with a blissful exhalation. This was what she had always dreamed of; her creations being something that people wanted to buy. And the love of her bondmates surrounding her was mana from the heavens.
Tre'mete had made it.
"I will always love you Tre'mete," said Duncan in her aural canal on her right side while Lileah'sah had to briefly ignite her lifting field to rise a few inches to be on the level of Tre'mete's left side aural canal.
"You will always be my heart Tre' my love," she whispered as they both embraced the muscular Asari.
Tre'mete closed her eyes and held back her tears of pure joy as she couldn't afford to have her make up ruined by streaks of tears.
"We are One," was all she could say back to them. Her bondmates lightly kissed her cheeks then laced their arms around Tre'mete's waist, the triad standing together, loving, indivisible and resolute, watching the show they had planned together over the past few weeks unfold.
The Turians and human females made their way back to the stage as the music switched into something that almost no one in the amphitheatre had ever heard before.
A driving electronic tune that had an incredible melody and kick ass back beat.
Olivia walked back out onto the runway after her and her companions had quickly changed, leading them once more, her confident radiant smile beaming for all to see. The Asari teenagers danced up the runway, skipping and twirling to this thumping surging electronica track. The audience took up the beat and started clapping in time with it. Many were inspired to stand up to dance to the music. Soon almost all in the amphitheatre were dancing.
The teens were dressed in chic and classy tunics and pants, each in a different arrangement and colour. Again, Asari mothers with young daughters nodded with approval and clicked the order button on their Omnitools and data pads. This was exactly what young Asari needed. The style was fashionable, and multi-purpose as it could be for formal occasions or everyday wear.
The music was replaced by a banging piece of electro-swing that made everyone's open eyes wide as this tune just rocked.
The Perihelion crew then sauntered out, dancing merrily to the music while the teens were still dancing out the front. Tre'mete had chosen to emulate classic human styles in the line up and had dressed her crew mates in garments that were inspired by 1920's fashions. Light silk knee length silken Flapper dresses with dozens of thin tassels scintillatingly shimmered and shined gloriously as the crew sashayed down the runway. Her choice of style and music massively gingered up the already excited crowd.
This wasn't art anymore, this was an EVENT!
Asari worldwide got their first taste of electro-swing music, loving the infectious melody and driving danceable beats as they watched the crew and the teens now Jive and Lindy Hop with each other on the stage. The Asari on the stage and runway used their biotics and lifted one another as they spun and twirled in time to the incredible rhythm.
The crowd went wild with cheering and tried to follow this phenomenal new style of dancing. Maidens globally and beyond into the Asari colonies, opened up Human Extranet pages, madly searching for lessons and examples on how to dance like this.
Olivia led her companions back through the dancing crew, waving to the cheers of the crowd.
Aenthiah watched her ward, her heart nearly bursting with pride. She sat with her own daughter, holding her hand, both of them totally transfixed by the sensational spectacle unfolding before them.
"Mother, she is incredible," said Lysila into Aenthiah's aural canal over the noise of the crowd and music. The Asari was most impressed with Matriarch Ruto's granddaughter and had recently heard the dramatic story of how Olivia and her two friends had defeated six commandos in hand to hand combat thanks to the training given by her mother to the teenagers.
"As are you my most precious child," responded Aenthiah with love in her eyes.
The Justicar was thrilled that Lysila had excepted her invitation to attend the show. That Lysila came at all was a minor miracle as she often avoided meeting her mother, the galactically famous Justicar, as she was completely against violence in all its forms although she did approve of Olivia's act of self-defence and understood what Aenthiah had committed herself to. She reached out and took Aenthiah's hand in hers and gently squeezed. A stone melted in the Justicar's heart as mother and daughter sat and enjoyed the amazing event together.
The lights dimmed once more and a new style of music began. A thumping base line with a loud high hat four four drum beat. The lights came back on.
Icilea, Heretonia, Emily and Pania strutted back onto the stage, this time dressed in very revealing underwear. The audience gasps them roared out their approval as they now examined what the four females were wearing. Saucy Secrets was now a legend in fashion as Tre'mete knew exactly what would suit humans and Turian females.
The four females had sultry, saucy wiggle in their hips as the seductively wandered down the runway. The crowd now heard a growly human voice begin to speak over the music as the four danced in a semi erotic fashion. The lights seemed to dim as the man continued to speak.
"There's so many things I like about you,
I just don't know where to begin,
I like the way you, look at me with those beautiful eyes,
I like the way you, act all surprised,
I like the way you, sing along,
I like the way you, always get it wrong,
I like the way you, clap your hands,
I like the way you, love to dance,
I like the way you, put your hands up in the air,
I like the way you, shake your hair,
I like the way you, like to touch,
I like the way you, stare so much,
But most of all...
Yeah.
Most of all..."
The music built to a rising crescendo, then the beat dropped and out stepped Chianay and Elanini.
I like the way you move...
[Songwriters: Christopher James Karyotakis / Dylan Burns]
The crowd went mental as the gorgeously stunning sisters strode and strutted down the stage together, the epitome of Asari beauty on glorious display. Never before had a consort deigned to be a fashion model yet this was perfection.
Once the initial sensation had passed the audience focused on what the sisters were wearing.
Mouths were covered in shock and eyes widened hilarious amazement as they could clearly see on the enormous video screens which clearly displayed what Chianay and Elanini had on.
The pair were wearing a well cut lacey silk bra that had a pair of Blue hands printed on the front of the cups, seemingly holding the breasts within.
It was the underwear though that nearly caused a riot.
Both were wearing the panties that Duncan had come up with.
Stunning high cut panties cut in a thong style, both silvery white in colour, covered in lots of little ice-cream cones with the logo printed boldly on the front in High Thessian saying,
"It's not going to lick itself!"
Pandemonium!
Laughter, incredulous screaming, raucous cheering and furious applause erupted from the crowd.
Lysila sat stunned, wide eyed while Aenthiah just smirked to herself as she knew what the crowning moment of the show would be as she had regularly melded with Duncan, both of them sharing their thoughts and experiences. She knew how his incredibly cheeky and mischievous mind worked. And she knew Tre'mete would have nearly wet herself laughing when he told her of this idea.
The Justicar glanced across to her left and saw her faithful Acolyte Saendi howling with laughter as were other members of the T'daari family. Raquelia was gently shaking her head but had a huge smile on her face. Fiahnni was cackling like a lunatic. Kash'shara was totally gobsmacked while Tito had fallen off his chair laughing in hysterics. Mirey and Hiroko were shrieking in convulsive giggles. The human families with their Asari partners that were now a part of the house of T'daari were howling with merriment at the audacity that Duncan and Tre'mete had gone with. Even Drokk and Fiahnni's bodyguards couldn't contain themselves. Aenthiah was heartened to see Nari and Lyessrae creased up laughing together at the ridiculously funny panties. She was especially amused to see Chianay and Elanini's mother, Sister Shaellei, guffawing loudly at the sight of her daughters wearing such lurid underwear.
The biggest joke in Asari history was an astoundingly enormous success.
Always make 'em laugh… thought Duncan as he hugged Tre'mete tightly while the trio watched from the wings.
The teenagers and crew came out, this time dressed in a combination of swimwear and casual attire, all now dancing to the ecstatic adulation of the audience who were all up and grooving away to the fantastic music being played.
The BodyRocker's song finally finished and all the models on stage turned and started to clap to welcome the true star of the show, Tre'mete.
Daft Punk's "One More Time" classic track started playing as Tre'mete, walked out leading her bondmates with her. A furious storm of applause and biotic Asari salutes resonated throughout the space.
There was no need for the audience to give a standing ovation as the entire amphitheatre were already on their feet dancing.
Tre'mete, radiant with a smile of quiet triumph, stepped forward letting go of her bondmates hands, took her bow and waved to the adulation of the crowd.
She had succeeded beyond her wildest dreams. Tre'mete turned and took her bondmates hands in hers and led them in bowing again to the audience and those watching from beyond. She could not have done this without them. Tre'mete shone with a biotic glow of pure happiness.
Saucy Secrets was a sensational stellar success.

I finally got my Facebook account back. My account got hacked a week ago and I posted about it here. here
Today, I logged into my desktop that I haven’t used in a while and I was able to send recover my account by verifying my ID. I am not sure what was stopping me when I did in my phone and my laptop but I am just glad to have it back.
For those of you who were in the same position. Don’t lose hope. Try to remember if you have used your account in other devices and try there. It also helps to get people to report your account as block prior to trying again.

2023.03.25 04:25 rainplait Try my Gorgoroth fort (without hacked orcs/wrathgiver)

Updated Gorgoroth a couple of months ago, filled it with some decent orcs: flame of war, pretender, earth-scorcher, of the spiders, endless, guardian of mordor, pain seeker, the venomous, blood flood, the scorpion, Bruz, the legendary, and a necromancer commander. Keen to see how it holds up against users without hacked orcs and wrathgiver.
steam username is variag92. feel free to share thoughts on how long it took, which parts of the fort were easiemore difficult, etc. Cheers.

2023.03.25 04:10 _standard_kaytin_ Is this legal?

So, I don't know if this is legal or not and it isn't my personal situation so I want to avoid contacting a lawyer. For context a 16m lives with his mom in Missouri, he contacted his father who lives In Washington. After the mother found out, she took his phone and is denying him the right to contact his father and has been denying the father the right to contact his children after texting her and asking to do so. I am not sure about the custody agreements because the mother is refusing to share that information with anyone, but does anyone know anything about the legality of this?

President Huey P. Long

Well he finally did it! After nearly 10 years of running the Kingfish has finally made it to the Presidency, cementing himself in history along with the 32 men before him. He has shocked the U.S. political sphere and his supporters have high hopes in the Kingfish and his incredibly progressive domestic policies and hope his isolationist foreign policy will pan out.
Upon entering office on May 20,1945 he immediately had to deal with the war in the Pacific. Despite their great differences he worked with Secretary of War Wendell Willkie in continuing aggressive U.S. policies in the Pacific Theater, working toward the complete and unconditional surrender of Japan. In Europe the war had fortunately finally come to an end with Germany surrendering just days before President Long's inauguration, however he now had to deal with the postwar negotiations which dealt with the postwar borders. In July he would go to the important Potsdam Conference meeting with Prime Minister Clement Attlee, and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. They spoke extensively about what would happen now, former President Truman and former President Roosevelt had already agreed to take a piece of Germany under U.S. control, President Long, a strong isolationist, preferred not to have the territory and asked both France and Britain to take the territory. However, since both countries had been devastated by the war and were recovering, President Long reluctantly decided to keep the territory for now, wanting to keep it out of Soviet hands.
In the Pacific the U.S. had gotten closer and closer to Japan with their island hopping strategy and had greatly increased the firebombing of Japan with the advice of Secretary of War Wendell Willkie. The Empire of Japan was on its knees, but that only caused them to fight even harder and more brutally. President Long at this point had been filled in on the new devastating weapon that had finally developed after years of experimentation, knowing it's destructive power he was at odds with himself, but with Secretary of War Wendell Willkie constantly pestering him to use the bomb to prevent a land invasion of Japan, in August the bombings were approved and over the next few days the cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki were reduced to ash. Along with the Russian invasion of Manchuria, Japan officially unconditionally surrendered in September and was rapidly occupied by the U.S. army. Although he would like to let it go as soon as possible with the country in shambles and with a possible Soviet takeover, President Long decided to keep U.S. troops in the country and began rebuilding the country.
President Long would quickly come into conflict with Secretary of War Wendell Willkie with their differing views on foreign policy, as Willkie supported being greatly involved in Europe to deal with the Soviets, but President Long wants to stay out Europe's problems and has only begrudgingly accepted to take part of Germany under U.S. occupation. Things would escalate with President Long refusing to join the newly formed United Nations something Willkie supported, It would get so bad they would both start hurling personal insults at one another, most of the cabinet supported President Long, but Vice President Harry Truman, who had been mostly kept out of things after being delegated to the vice Presidency supported Willkie. President Long who was furious at this point removed Willkie from the position after nearly 5 years of service, and replaced him with isolationist and progressive Senator Burton K. Wheeler. His refusal to join the UN would also strain relations with the western European states who expected the U.S. to join.
Along with his refusal to join the United Nations, President Long stopped any real U.S. presence in Europe besides continuing trade and holding on to the German territory gained after WW2. With no U.S. real presence, the Western European states had become afraid of the Soviet Union, who had aggressively taken over the Eastern European countries, but if the U.S. owned German territory ever attacked by the Soviets President Long may be forced to intervene militarily lest he'd want public backlash. Western Europe also began slowly rebuilding after the devastating second world war, U.S. trade definitely assisted but despite some calls from people to help Western Europe directly, President Long followed his non-intervention and isolationist policy and decided against it. The Republicans and Democrats have come out in opposition and called for greater U.S. involvement in Europe, especially to oppose the Soviet Union, worrying about a Soviet dominated Europe
President Long also began work toward full Philippine independence which he'd supported with mostly bipartisan support. In 1946 the Philippines had finally become an independent nation recognized by the U.S. with the Treaty of Manila, the Philippines would end up joining the United Nations unlike the U.S.
As he promised he did continue President Roosevelt’s “Good Neighbor” policy and continued to try and make closer ties with other American countries strictly diplomatically, but didn’t really focus on the policy being mostly hands off and letting his allies deal with diplomatic talks.
Back home for the first year of his presidency, he got little to nothing done as Congress was still held by mostly Republicans and Democrats. Along with the economy in question he saw backlash from the public who put some blame on the Kingfish as he was the president. Things would become worse as in May of 1946, despite him personally meeting many union bosses and shutting down multiple railroads, many strikes would occur anyways. It resulted in thousands of freight trains and passenger trains stopping causing anger toward President Long and hurting the economy, he and his socialist allies quickly went back to the union bosses and despite already campaigning on expanding union powers, made multiple guarantees to the unions in greatly expanding their powers and slowly the strikes would stop but damage had been done.
Even with the hurting economy and public anger directed toward President Long the 1946 midterms would be a smashing success for President Long, as the U.S. public overwhelmingly voted in favor of the Longists and Socialists getting them majorities over the Republicans and Democrats in Congress shaking the political field.

1946 U.S. Midterm Elections:
Senate:
Socialists 29 seats
Longists 28 seats
Republicans 21 seats
Democrats: 18 seats
House of Representatives:
Socialists 118 seats
Longists 123 seats
Republicans 97 seats
Democrats 97 seats

After the dominating performance in the midterms by the Socialists and Longists, they had gained a strong majority over the Republicans and Democrats allowing President Long to try and implement his Share Our Wealth domestic plan especially in the time of economic downturn. President Long would quickly propose the “Kingfish Bill” which would introduce an aggressive progressive tax which would cap personal fortune at $150 million dollars, cap income at $1.5 million dollars, and finally cap inheritance at $7 million dollars(following inflation). However he was stonewalled by the Supreme Court, and despite his two (unspecified) progressive Supreme Court appointments the other justices blocked the legislation. He then vigorously began working toward trying to convince the Supreme Court to try and allow his bill to pass, in the meantime not wanting to be stuck on the issue began working toward other domestic policies he had been proposing.
Another massive piece of legislation that President Long promised and passed is the National Labor Empowerment Act(1946). This act granted unions further powers in their places of employment so that average workers would be protected by the bad practices of business. The bill saw push back mainly for the Republicans and even some Democrats who argued the unions would exploit their newly found increased power which would hurt U.S. business and cause an economic downturn. Laborers obviously sang President Long's praises, chanting “every man is king” during his speeches and whenever he was out in public. During his presidency, as hoped unions further protected average workers from being exploited en masse, they increased wages and improved working conditions, threatening to strike if demands were not met. However there were consequences for giving the unions further power, over his presidency as critics predicted there were cases of unions exploiting their power. There was documented cases of some unions avidly protecting bad workers causing animosity between these unions and the employers, accusations of corruption flew against union bosses who were accused of racketeering and using the unions for personal benefit, and with high demands from unions caused unemployment in certain places harming the already shaky post war economy.
One thing he had promised in his campaign but would immediately prioritize after the massive railroad strike months earlier was the nationalization of the railroad industry even with the economic repercussions. With the massive majority and approval in congress he would create the United States National Railroad Administration(USNRA) effectively nationalizing the nation's railroads and putting them in federal control. The U.S. would buy out multiple companies in the railroad industry, however as expected with the U.S. buyout of these companies the struggling economy would struggle further as debt and inflation continued to increase which angered people outside the railroad industry and unions. President Long came out to quell fears of another big depression saying with the nationalization of the railroads more jobs could be created, and after its nationalization more jobs in the railroad industry were created such as bolstering and creating new railroads which did partly help the struggling economy, and railroad workers were happier with better working conditions with the industry under federal control.
A minor bill in comparison would also be passed, even farmers had recovered from the Great Depression, it didn’t stop President Long from proposing and passing the Federal Agriculture Assistance Act in late 1946, which guaranteed that the president and the federal government would always come to assist struggling farmers through various methods such as subsidies and various other methods of financial assistance. It was easily passed as it saw mostly bipartisan support, and has drawn comparisons to the former AAA which ended in 1942. During his term it had not been needed as farmers had recovered, but just with the acts passing he has gotten in the good graces with the nation's farmers and it is likely they’ll reliably vote for him in 1948. He was even able to convince the capable Henry Wallace to join his administration as Secretary of Agriculture after serving in the position under President Roosevelt.
To gain some popularity with the public and to hopefully allow more workers to be hired to ramp up the economy, President Long passed the Executive Price Controls Act at the end of 1946. Most price controls were unpopular and it was hoped that lifting price controls would allow for more employment, the bill gave President Long the power to institute and remove price controls over many different items. With its passing President Long would remove price controls on a multitude of items, unfortunately the effect would be minimal. Though a number of people would be employed it would not have much of an effect on the economy as it continued to struggle, the public had just gotten angrier and the Republicans and Conservative Democrats accused President Long of increasing the power of the president even further. Even his Socialist allies were also skeptical when passing the bill as the bill gave more power to the president, but as expected longists wholeheartedly supported it, it has led to some minor drifts between the allies.
Now even with the struggling economy he wouldn’t let that stop him from passing more of his domestic legislation. After passing the Executie Price Controls Act(1946), he would draft up and pass the Veterans Pension Act of 1947 guaranteeing WW1 and WW2 veterans a yearly pension with their pension being decided by their individual needs. This act won widespread support from U.S. veterans of both wars who praised the President and it did help veterans who were struggling financially, but it definitely didn’t help the economic situation, only making the majority of people not happy.
Next he would pass his most ambitious bill yet, following his statement on the “war on disease,” the Kingfish would pass the American Healthcare Act of 1947. This bill cemented that the essential healthcare costs including the mental health of Americans would be paid for by the U.S. government in a single payer system but non-essential medical procedures were not covered under the system, the bill saw cheers from the average people who had suffered so greatly from the Great Depression. However some did oppose the bill such as some who feared the system as communist, and conservatives who saw this as additional taxes to pay for a potentially ineffective system. It was put into effect in March of ‘47 and over the course of his presidency millions of Americans were able to get essential healthcare, the government paid for it partly through taxes but to make sure that the taxes could be as small as possible funding also came from other avenues such as tariffs. Despite the current economy President Long's popularity skyrocketed as now the economic burden of healthcare had been lifted from the average American, however he would come into conflict with southerners and his Socialist allies who had preferred another system. President Long’s single payer system still allowed citizens to still get health insurance from private companies separate from the government, the system also contacted a select few private companies to assist the federal government. The Socialists had preferred a system where there would be no reliance on private companies, but Long opposed that and a conversation with Socialist Senate Leader and friend Norman Thomas would get heated. Seeing no way to convince the president and not wanting public backlash most Socialists in Congress said yes to his system. Southerners had a problem with the system due to the fact African American were also allowed to get healthcare, and it had hurt him in the south. Unrelated to the bill above, the Kingfish would also increase the benefits for Social Security by spring, increasing the pension for people aged 65 and up. With the increased benefits to try and pick up the slack President Long did also increase taxes.
So far in the Kingfish’s presidency he had passed historic progressive legislation and had bolstered other legislation, but that damned economy had been a thorn in his side for over a year at this point. But he had a plan to stimulate and recover the economy, he would approach Congress and in a rare show of bipartisanship among the four parties he would pass the National Road Infrastructure Act of 1947. The act created many public works projects to bolster U.S. road infrastructure, mainly expanding the country's highways. When it went into effect in April, millions of Americans would be employed to bolster U.S. road infrastructure, fixing existing roads, creating new roads, and creating bridges and as hoped for it stimulated the ailing economy, and although the economy was not at full strength it had still greatly recovered and President Long’s popularity among the people grew.
Domestically things were now looking up, the public works projects created had jump started the economy and things looked better, but then that pompous fool Senator Joseph McCarthy along with other known figures began loudly speaking about communist infiltration in the U.S. government, even insinuating that President Long’s cabinet and close allies consistent of communists. This caused widespread fear among the American people and Senator McCarthy’s accusations began to hurt President Long’s reputation, Long who was furious at the Senators accusations begrudgingly decided to try and work with the Senator fearing public reaction at condemning the Senator. His Longists allies for the most part wholeheartedly supported him, but his Socialist allies were split as some wanted to condemn the Senator and fight back the accusations while others wanted to work with the Senator to prove that communists had no influence over them. In response to accusations of communist infiltration in the government, in April President Long signed an Executive Order creating the Federal Employees Loyalty Program requiring Federal employees to take loyalty oaths to the U.S. It also began recommending the removal of certain employees. Now the public is still fearful of communist infiltration in the government but the President’s actions did ease the public worry, however the rift between him and the Socialists grew as they opposed the program while he supported it. Some even tried making a bill to stop the Executive Order which angered the President, causing more heated arguments between the Longists and the Socialists.
After partly quelling the fear of communist infiltration in the U.S. government President Long would then begin to work on amending the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. His proposed provisions in the bill would make a 30 hour and four day work the national standard and he would add a guarantee of four weeks of paid vacation for employees. Despite recent conflicts with his Socialist allies, the amendments would pass through Congress easily with joint Longist and Socialist support. The changes would go into effect in July seeing cheers from laborers and many businesses would have to adopt the new standards, during his presidency general employee health and happiness would increase along with certain industries even seeing an increase in productivity, however in some other industries productivity did go down along with employee salary. It would cause conflicts between some Unions and the business in those industries that would eventually be quelled but the calls from conservatives on Union power has been emboldened.
After months of fighting and negotiations with the Supreme Court President Long frustratingly could still not make them budge on his aggressive tax code, although very irritated, President Long instead decided to go for a more average progressive tax, passing the Revenue Act of 1947 taxes on incredibly wealthy would heavily increase but not to the extent President Long had preferred and he reduced taxes for the middle class and the poor. As expected this did see cheers from the average American, the increased taxes on the wealthy was another thing that did help the economy from its slump and it was steadily recovering. The heavily increased taxes on the wealthy would have the consequence of driving some wealthy Americans out to other countries but the effect was minimal.
As the latter half of 1947 had come, President Long began working towards his promises in the education department. Knowing the economy was still recovering and making a big change in the middle of it would hurt it, instead of immediately making higher education completely free, President Long introduced the Education Funding Act of 1947 which increased federal funding of universities all over the United States to reduce the amount students had to pay for their education. President Long has said that free higher education will be implemented in the future, but in the current economy it would not be a wise decision. Still the bill did see cheers from Americans, but conservatives were not pleased with the bill as it still increased government spending especially during this economy. Over his presidency, tuition for university would become cheaper for students all over the country, but as expected this was another thing the Federal Government had to pay for which didn’t help the economy.
As 1948 approached, calls for more internationalist foreign policy came from the Republicans and Democrats and the Soviets were becoming more powerful especially with no direct U.S. presence in Europe besides in West Germany and Berlin. As it would happen the Soviet Union would invade multiple countries such as Greece after taking over Eastern Europe, the Western European states rushed to assist those nations. The nations would greatly increase trade with the U.S. to have the supplies to take on the Soviet forces putting a strain on their post war economies, with these invasions the public increasingly became worried of a Soviet dominated Western Europe. President Long maintained his isolationist policy, saying that he will not allow more U.S. soldiers to die in Europe and that he wanted to stay out of their problems, but he did condemn the Soviets expansionist policy. The Soviets also increasingly supported their communist allies in China assisting them in their takeover of the Chinese government. The U.S. would stay out of the conflict, sticking to just trading and despite French support the existing government was getting pushed out.
During the rest of his presidency he would maintain his progressive policies and continue public works projects on road infrastructure to bolster U.S. infrastructure and to revitalize the economy which had mostly recovered by the end of his first term

2023.03.25 04:01 Kayabeanie I grew up dirt poor. Now I have a house, but I still feel poor.

I grew up dirt poor. Growing up, I remember reading something when my mom was signing us up for free school lunches. It said something along the lines of, "a household of 2 people should be bringing in 23k/year and they'd be right at the poverty line."
I didn't know just how poor we were until it all clicked later in life. My parents brought home 10k/year. We were a family of 5....in California.
No matter how I did the math, it never made sense. How on earth did my parents provide for us? How did we have a roof over our shoulders? Or anything for that matter.
I remember my mom buying my a t-shirt from the 99cent store because we were doing our back to school shopping. I remember not having a TV or wifi or a phone or a car. If my teacher made us watch some episode for an assignment, I couldn't do it. The same teacher would then tell me to just go online and watch it. Ma'am, what made you think that I'd have a computer, let alone wifi, if I didn't have a TV at home? I can't go to any body's house because I don't have a means of getting there (I was 7 years old).
We'd have tortilla soup. It was a bean soup made from boiled beans and water. Sometimes, my mom would throw in some tortillas and we'd be lucky if we got some tortilla or a bean.
Anyway, That's just setting up an image of how poor we were. I could go into detail, but it's weird, it's like my memory goes all Grey whenever I try to think about my childhood.
So! My parents rented this small house from this landlord that lived right next door to us. She was a hoarder. The house we rented was built in the 40s or 50s. Absolutely nothing had been done to it since then. However, this lady had been hoarding and piling up shit in the yard all those years. The rent agreement was that she's allowed to keep all her junk back there and my parents could fix up the house if they wanted to.
There was black mold, roaches seemed to sleep with us no matter how much we cleaned or kept the house clean. I don't even know where we got our shabby furniture from...i think we had a couch that we found on the side of the road. Who knows. We didn't have any flooring... It was just cement with glue stuck to it from vinyl that had been ripped out. Our toilets barely worked. Washer and dryer? No, we had to wash our clothes by hand most times. I never had a room to myself. I shared with my parents and youngest sister. We had used mattresses covered in stains. They were on the floor. It was a hoarders house as well. I'm not even sure what all my parents hoarded? The summers were miserably hot and winters, we froze (yes, it snows in that part of California). There were gang fights, shootings, etc. We were the neighborhood everyone was told to avoid because of violent murders and criminal activities.
Now, I'm grown. I left that household and got married to my husband. Who grew up in a somewhat similar situation, except in a run down trailer. Similar poverty, similar experiences, similar parents.
We worked and worked and we got this beautiful, lovely house. It's cute and charming! In the safest neighborhood in the state. All out neighbors are 80+ years old and retired doctors or engineers. We felt this sense of relief at first: We made it. We have a place to call our own.
That's fallen apart in the last year. We never grew up in a home that was furnished properly or furnished at all. We've never been around houses like this growing up, so we don't know what to do with all the space, all the rooms, and we don't know how to furnish it. Nothing makes sense. Nothing looks right. So after months and months of living here, I had a breakdown. I was cleaning and cleaning and cleaning.... Like always. I'm always cleaning. Why the fuck do we have a hoarders house? We're hoarding trash? We can't clean up after ourselves? We don't know how to cook? We don't clean properly or something? It's just so frustrating. All we do is work and clean and our house is empty, yet full of furniture that doesn't make sense. Nothing fits. Maybe we don't belong in this house and we should go live somewhere small because that's what we know best.
Just confused and stressed. Thanks for reading my rant.
