2023.06.04 05:03 Laz_Zack Games you may enjoy if you liked Fear and Hunger 1 & 2
Some games (and other media) I interacted with that have similar themes and atmosphere with a brief (spoiler-free) description of the game and what aspects of it reminded me the most of F&H (spoiler free of course), I'll stick to games I played but if you have any other recommendations feel free to share, I recommend playing all the games here blind. I might add more if I remember them. Beware that some of the games and media here have themes of Sexual Assault and other Dark topics (some more implicit and some more explicit).
Corpse Party: Blood Covered: Atmosphere and some Themes primarily. Essentially a visual novel with RPG Maker Horror game exploration (original game was an RPG Maker game, but I recommend playing this one before playing original due to original spoiling some story-aspects that may detract from certain reveals here since this is a reboot of sorts with a more developed story) with light puzzle-solving and a focus on making decisions that can lead to a brutal end to your characters (no combat here), Voice Acting and Soundtrack are amazing and Atmosphere is genuinely oppressive as hell, very few games made me feel this powerless, warning though there is some fanservice revolving around the characters and considering they are high-schoolers that is rather uncomfortable so beware of that (specially when it comes to Yuka, those that played the game know).
2021 version is probably the best, but I don't like the screen clutter on that version so 3DS and PSP are also good options, if you enjoy it check out Corpse Party Rebuilt (a faithful remake of the original version) and Book of Shadows (a follow-up that focus on what-if scenarios and prequel chapters), the other entries I didn't like as much.
Pathologic: Atmosphere, Themes and Gameplay. Haven't finished this one, I'm in the middle of the second route, but I can really easily recommend this, beware that the game is very much not fun, but it is a great game, Atmosphere is great, Story is intriguing with you not knowing you can and can't trust, you can easily mess up side quests and even the main quest if you pick bad answers (and you can also finish some quests in multiple ways), combat is clunky and disincentivized, you have to manage your hunger, immunity, exhaustion and time while walking slow as sin to try and finish things before the day ends, and that is not accounting for other things trying to kill you dead, gets more manageable with knowledge and planning just like F&H.
Check the keybindings there are some important hotkeys the games doesn't tell you about that will make things more manageable, by the way you can trade with kids to get drugs and bullets, you'll thank my later for that, play Pathologic HD on Steam, original has a strange translation.
Demon's Souls and Dark Souls series: Dark Fantasy, Atmosphere and Challenge. Great series, interesting story that you have to piece together, Atmosphere is on-point, Combat is challenging and rewarding, word is falling apart, people are dying, and everything is going to shit, fairly depressing and frustrating and even when you defeat great foes you never fell like your victory meant much in the grand schemes of things (at least that is how I felt), Funger 1 specially has a bit of that Dark Souls lineage to it, which is interesting since I've seen some DS fans become Funger fans, check out King's Field series the spiritual predecessor of sorts if you are into some clunk (I know I am), the pre-Souls From Software catalog also deserves love.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent: Atmosphere and Themes primarily. Interesting story with a lot of dark themes that explore horrors both Cosmic and Human, Atmosphere is oppresive and makes you feel small, it was from a time where "Stalker Horror" (where you can't fight back and only run and hide) was more novel and not oversaturated like it kind of is now, rewards paying attetion to notes and dialogue to understand the full scope of what is going on, not much in terms of emergent gameplay and choice making outside of the endings since it is a fairly linear experience, Justine is a cool DLC and a Machine for Pigs is fine but doens't care the same vibe and it is also more walking simulator-esque, haven't played Rebirth.
If you enjoy it I recommend the Penumbra series and Soma, from the same devs, Penumbra is more similar to Amnesia but set in modern time while Soma is more futuristic with a bigger focus on existential horror over a Cosmic one.
Silent Hill 1-4: Survival Horror Gameplay, Atmosphere and some Themes. Termina is obviously very inspired by it, if you enjoy the different take on God-hood that Funger has you'll probably find the occult aspects of the Silent Hill, and even outside that there is a lot of macabre imagery for you to savor, Atmosphere is oppressive and relentless, you are playing as just an average Joe in a really terrible situation fighting against horrible odds, if you enjoyed the depth the characters of Funger has you'll definitely enjoy the character of the Silent Hill series, a lot of human tragedy amidst all the horror just like Funger, gameplay is focused on managing your health and resources like healing items and bullets, no meters here.
If you enjoyed them I recommend playing Shattered Memories, it is a cool game, the less I say about it the better, I didn't enjoy the post-Team Silent games as much, though they have some cool things going for them.
Haunting Grounds: Atmosphere and Themes. More of loose recommendation, game made me feel like a piece of meat, an object to be used and abused for the ends of people that don't really care for my safety, Womanhood as horror is a big theme on this game, so it will probably resonate with you even more if you are a Woman, I specially enjoyed how Alchemy was a big aspect of the Lore, even with the reveals a lot of things are left up to interpretation, "Stalker Horror" with light combat (you can surprisingly fight back with certain options, but the game doesn't lend you tools for that on a silver platter, and it is only a temporary solution).
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask: Atmosphere and Themes of Death and Hopelessness. Another looser recommendation, inspired Termina in some aspects, the game is surprisingly dark and depressing especially if you go out of your way to do side quests and interact with the NPCs around the world, Death and Existential dread is a reoccurring aspect of the game, Three-day time limit can be really stressful, better to experience it for yourself, there are some references to the previous game Ocarina of Time so beware of that.
Berserker: Read The Manga if you want to trace the lineage of Funger, the series is heavily inspired by it, Dark Fantasy on a Crapsack World full of misery and tragedy (reductive I know but I'm trying to keep this spoiler free).
Hellraiser 1 and 2: Explores themes of pain and pleasure and otherworldly, Eldritch beings that live on a different plane than ours, the Cube of the Depths reminds me of the Lament Configuration, Funger has references to it.
Perfect Blue: Doesn't have much to do with Funger but it is a great movie that you should watch anyway, while you are it play Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Final Fantasy XII, some of my favorites games (ok this last one is a jest but I do genuinely recommend Perfect Blue if you like being mind-fucked).

SOUTHSHORE UNIVERSITY WINS WELLCREST INHERITANCE CASE
The Franklin State Supreme Court has officially ordered the personal effects of the late Johnathan Wellcrest be turned over to the care of the prestigious university. The legal battle between the university and the Wellcrest estate was the longest in Union history, having begun shortly after Sir Wellcrest’s death over a century ago.
While the former innovator and visionary initially left all of his earthly possessions to the college in his will, the Wellcrest family were quick to bring the validity of the decision into question. They claimed that Johnathan was not of sound mind near the end of his life, and that his attorney at the time (a Southshore Alumni by the name of Timothy Reade) had influenced him on behalf of the university. Southshore University of course denied such claims, and a lengthy series of court encounters began.
Among the possessions set to be turned over to the University is the Wellcrest Manor, where Johnathan Wellcrest spent the last thirty years of his life in seclusion. This includes the manor’s vast library and collection of archaeological curiosities, a famed interest of Sir Wellcrest. The University has released plans to turn the property into a satellite campus, focusing on Meteorological and marine studies. “The unique weather patterns and sealife in the area make for an interesting study opportunity” The College remarked.
“We are absolutely ecstatic” A spokeswoman for Southshore University stated in regards to the decision “Sir Wellcrest was one of the most influential figures in the science community of the last century, we are incredibly honored for the opportunity to examine his work directly”. The University went on to thank the Franklin State Supreme Court for their “continuously professional; and dutiful” handling of the case, and promised that many of the items in the collection will be made available for public viewing at the Southshore University Museum as soon as possible.
The Wellcrest Family has been unavailable for comment.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this story, players will take on the role of college students attending Southshore University, working for the college during the summer break to catalog the multitude of writings and objects left behind at the Wellcrest Manor. While maybe not your ideal way to spend summer break (or maybe it is, who knows?) tuition at Southshore is rather expensive, and the pay and tuition breaks were too good to pass up. Besides, the weather in the area tends to be beautiful during this time of year, and the manor does boast a fine private beach. How hard can packing some dusty artifacts be?
The game is set in the 1990’s of a somewhat alternate history world. It takes place in the village of Canary, a small town on the east coast of the U.S. (or the Union in this timeline) that is largely kept afloat by its fishing industry and summer tourism. Do keep in mind that this is my first foray into Call of Cthulhu. That being said, anyone, regardless of experience level are welcome!

2023.06.04 01:08 Moronic-Creature The search for Bob Lazar's degrees
Part 1
https://medium.com/@weaponized/bob-lazar-education-revelations-faa431d4b1e8 TL/DR:We can assume with a high degree of confidence that Bob was part of an engineering transfer program at Pierce Junior College, specifically targeting UC Los Angeles.
Part 2
https://medium.com/@weaponized/bob-lazar-revelations-part-2-4c7c8d925930 TL/DR:
- Bob refers to his degree from Caltech as electronics.
- UCLA was one of only seven institutions in California (one in 4 in LA) that offered a bachelor's degree in Electronics.
- UCLA renamed its Electrical Engineering course to Electrical and Electronics Engineering the year Bob entered Pierce College.
- The UCLA Electronics Program did not appear in contemporary lists of available university programs, such as the College Blue Book. Only a person who read the course catalog from UCLA could have known about its existence. In 1990, it would have been extremely difficult to find this information.
- Bob did not finish UCLA, probably/possibly because he had fake credits for History and English from Pacifica University.
- Caltech did not have an Electronics program, but the Electrical Engineering program was almost exclusively made up of electronics classes.
- Since the Caltech program was the same as the UCLA program, Bob could join the graduate course at Caltech without obtaining a bachelor's degree first.
In conclusion
- Bob was part of an engineering transfer program for UCLA, which in turn had the only Electronics Program and courses in all of Los Angeles that could have been a prerequisite for pursuing the graduate Electrical Engineering program at Caltech.
- Bob had the abililty, opportunity and motivation to go to Caltech.
- At least one person saw Bob at Caltech, and another saw both of his (masters) degrees.
- If years later Bob went to MIT to learn the physics of a weapon - as Joe Rogan suggested - and had his thesis classified, then Bob would not have appeared in any public records (absolutely none).
- A person with master's degrees from MIT and Caltech and no public records is probably one in a billion and would have been a great candidate for an above top-secret reverse engineering project.

2023.06.04 00:05 Sparky_McDibben Free Adventure Ideas
Hey y'all,
Been brainstorming a while, and I've got a few adventure ideas I thought I'd share with the group. These are free for critique, use, modification, etc., by anyone who wants to. Knock yourselves out, and if you've got ones you want to share, please add them to the comments!
1) Soap Operas of Night City: The PCs get mixed up with a BD soap opera. Since braindances are experiences, that means anyone you meet on the street might be braindance recording. Which means that any interaction you have might not be completely genuine.
Intro: As the PCs are walking down the street one day, they see a couple having a completely histrionic meltdown in public. Others have gathered around and are watching these two folks tear into each other, until the woman steps up and backhands the man, hard. The man raises a hand back...and that's when you ask if the PCs want to intervene. If they don't, they drive on by, no harm, no foul.
Focus: If the PCs intervene, the couple loops the PCs into their drama. The man's name is Pepi, the woman, Marina. It seems Pepi's twin brother Pepe slept with Marina, but she knew it was Pepe and not Pepi. Human Perception checks detect that there's something wrong with this setup - both Marina and Pepi are being way too histrionic.
Strike: After the PCs extricate themselves from the couple (who are sloppily make-up-kissing), a fixer approaches them with NDAs and contracts, and invites them to join the cast of Real Housewives of Night City, a BD soap opera. If the PCs don't join, of course, the show's corporate sponsor (pick one that works best for your campaign) will start harassing them. Not only that, the show keeps "filming" near whatever jobs the PCs take, often trying to loop them into the drama. Of course, if the PCs do join, then this is a great opportunity to pump up their Acting skill and really dive into some drama.
2) SUPER Y: Hyper-intelligent child prodigies are using a pre-Krash AI to rewrite history and culture, trying to remove sources of conflict.
Intro: Overnight, sources of information start changing, often in strange ways. Every digital record of the 4th Corporate War is eliminated in many of Night City's nets. Criminals are labelled as "misunderstood" and then set for release without conditions or bail. Sources of conflict between corporations are removed, lost, or destroyed. Oddly enough, many children's books keep changing, including Goldilocks and the Three Bears (the bears adopt Goldilocks and she learns to be nice), The Boy Who Cried Wolf (the moral is changed to be that everyone should just believe you all the time), and Hansel and Gretel (the moral is changed to not eating other people's houses).
Focus: Netwatch enlists the PCs to help them track down the hackers. There are no tracks, no clues, no trace. In fact, it's suspiciously similar to Rache Bartmoss' MO. Eventually, the PCs find a lead that leads them back to a building owned by Bartmoss. Fighting their way past insane bots, auto-turrets, and Black ICE, they eventually gain root access.
Strike: Turns out, this was all done by a group of child prodigy netrunners led by a kid named Wyatt. They found an old AI down here, created by some guy named Bartmoss to rewrite data. By jacking in to several networks, they discovered that they could effortlessly alter facts in an attempt to stop another Corporate War. Now the PCs have a problem: the kids they can turn over to Netwatch (who will do God knows what with them), but what do they do with a pre-Krash AI programmed by a madman to alter truth? Hell, at this point, are the PCs sure they know what truth is?
3) Librarian-Guerillas: When corporations run shit, it can really put a damper on public services. A group of self-styled librarians are waging a guerilla war against book publishers by stealing content to share with their communities.
Intro: Several trucks are hijacked. All those trucks were carrying "useless" detritus heading to a disposal site. The PCs are enlisted by a corporate fixer to track down the stolen goods and kill whoever took them.
Focus: A look at the manifests for the trucks reveal they were all carrying at least some books, and when the PCs track the actual trucks down, they find that the books, and any salvageable weapons and armor, are gone. While they're doing that, an e-bookseller has their entire catalog copied overnight. Clues lead back to a new gang: the Librarians, who are holed up in the old City Annex on the outskirts of the Hot Zone.
Strike: When the PCs arrive, they find a fairly modern city library - residents are allowed to check out both paper and digital books, a quiet coffee-flavored kibble shop sells underpriced snacks, and there's even a mutated box turtle in little terrarium. The "gang" are all kids of old librarians, and they're focused on restoring services to the community. What do the PCs do?
Hope these are useful!

2023.06.03 22:46 One-Acanthisitta-137 Bachelors or Associates?
| In your experience, does it matter or is it worth it to get a bachelors in graphic design? Or is an associates fine? I know a lot of people will say you don’t even need a degree but most places require a bachelors from what I’ve seen. The community college near me offers an AAS degree in graphic design. I’m going to attach the curriculum for the community college program for reference. Thank you submitted by One-Acanthisitta-137 to graphic_design [link] [comments] |

2023.06.03 14:24 Alohamori I put together a ridiculously comprehensive resource for doing TMUK data analysis. Now that it's current up to Series 15, I'd like to share it with you.
tl;dr: Trabajo de las Mesas, my database of TM stats.
Hey, folks. I know not everyone here is into the statistical side of
Taskmaster, but those that are should be in for a treat with this one. Shoutout early doors to
TMI for being one of the best things on the internet; it is
so much prettier and more thorough than what I've done here, lacking only in "queryability" as far as the stats go. I set out to essentially repackage TMI's coverage of TMUK into a SQLite database in order to make it easy (or at least possible) to answer, within reason, any conceivable question regarding the numbers.
I ended up building that database and have it hosted
here as a Datasette instance, which provides what I hope you'll find to be an intuitive UI for working with the various tables; yes, the name is an awful pun on
this classic. Anyway, I'd like to show you some neat things we can do with TdlM without getting too far into the weeds tech-wise:
- We can find all the
- Due to most objective tasks having associated measurements, we can see things like the fastest and slowest attempts, as well as just the "biggest" results regardless of unit of measure, which is full of silly.
- Stepping gently into the realm of the obsessive,
toodaloom TdlM catalogs who all read out every team and/or live task, so we can quickly confirm that all 75 regular-series contestants have done the onstage read. - With data on who coined every title and when, we can find
This is of course just a sample of the sorts of question the database can answer using only the filtering interface, and I look forward to seeing any interesting results you might find with it. Regrettably, there's a pretty early wall on the kind of complexity you can have in a query constructed using filters alone, but it's possible to drop down to raw SQL in order to do calculations and just generally "transform" the data, which lets us discover:
I appreciate that most of you won't be fluent in SQL or terribly keen on learning it, but you may find it possible to modify these examples in order to find answers to your own questions. You can also export any query results as a CSV file, which can then be imported into whichever spreadsheeting application you find the coziest. Finally, I'd be happy to try to put together the incantations needed to run the numbers on any especially intriguing suggestions.
I know this endeavor was some breed of madness, but I got a kick out of seeing it come together and being able to get concrete answers to such absurd questions, and I hope you enjoy and find it useful as well. Thanks again to
TMI and others for making this much easier than it would've been without them. ❤️

2023.06.03 10:34 SeniorBeef Visitations with anger
Anger has often gotten the best of me. From the early days, from the Old World in the formative years and the dreamy beginnings. The punch marks on cabinets and doors at the old house will tell you how I ran with it. And if yelling left a physical mark, there would have been a deep groove in middle of the living room. My mother has seen a few tantrums, one just a few days before her death. My sisters have been the subject of this anger, my friends, pretty much everybody.
And because this is the real world and things don't fix themselves, the anger turned into rage and it stayed with me as I abused substance after substance, ignoring the only responsible course of action, and that is therapy. I used the general public like a dart board and threw tantrums at bus stations that didn't have tickets, at cab drivers that didn't have change, at the electrician, the waiter, the guy selling things and the things themselves.
In my teenage years, I used to cry in the bathroom every night after being yelled it for some reason or the other. I remember clearly how my teary, snot-covered face looked in the mirror and promised it that I won't be like that when I grew up. I swore sincerely that I will be the exact opposite. But I did grow up and did become that, so who was I promising in the mirror? Was it my reflection? Was it someone else I had summoned to make a binding pledge?
Whoever it was, the pledge wasn't binding enough and I got no pangs of consscience as I walked over my own red lines. Always thinking I had the moral and logical high ground, I did not exercise a touch of self control over the rage and I let it out exactly like I said I never would. Somewhere along the way as I lost my belief in that which is invisible, I lost my promise to the mirror and whatsoever that was inside it.
Then one day we went out to the desert to camp, everyone is having fun, the fire is burning. So I walk out away from all that until it's pitch black and there is no one around me, and when it was completely silent, like dead silent, I talked to myself. I told myself that I know what I was doing and that I needed to stop. I wasn't waiting for a magical experience or a sensory flush. I just wanted it to mean something.
And I often wonder, where did it all start? My father surely has it and so did his father and everyone in my line of ancestry, but where did it come from? Was this a part of the original catalog of characters everyone but me seems to have been handed? Was this the only remaining character template when it was time for me to enter the earth? I may have not chosen this but then again who really does? One way or the other, you learn that you're responsible for even the reins that slip through your fingers.

2023.06.03 01:25 WaveDD Opinion on These Masters Programs and Advice on Future Masters Choice
Hello everyone, I would really appreciate your opinion on which masters program to choose out of these options. I was having issues formatting a pros and cons column so I will include that separately from the table.
Some background about me is that I'm a Canadian with a molecular biology degree. I tried applying to programs that have internships because I think it's really important to get practical experience and it would be a big plus if I can land a paid internship.
My main career goal is to get into the field of machine learning engineering preferably in the biology space but I'd be fine with that job in another space. I learned relatively recently that there are computer science masters that accept students who did not major in computer science. I have applied to these and my ideal plan is to get a masters in CS while self-studying the math needed for machine learning. The reason for this plan was because my math fundamentals are fairly weak and I'm not a fan of academic math courses. As a fallback, I could always go into software development after getting a CS degree. However, I haven't heard back from any of the CS programs I've applied to and there's a chance I could not be accepted into any. Meanwhile I've already been accepted to bioinformatics masters and the deadline to confirm enrollment is quickly approaching. So, I think the safe option would be to accept one of these bioinformatics programs instead of risking it and betting that I will get accepted into a CS masters.
University | Costs | Curriculum | Internship | Program Length | Rankings (Average of QS and Times) |
Boston University | 61,050 USD | link | 2 weeks | 1 year | 90 |
Northeastern University (Boston) | 55,400 USD | link | 3-6 months | 2 years | 278 |
UvA/VU (Netherlands) | 31,160 (Euro) | link (I would choose the bioinformatics concenctration) | 10 months? | 2 years | 59 (Amsterdam) / 168 (Vrije) |
Wageningen (Netherlands) | 39,200 (Euro) | link | 6 months | 2 years | 92 |
Boston University Pros - 1 year program means quicker to graduate and enter the job market
- Access to lucrative US market
- One of America's biotech hubs
- 15k scholarship
Cons - Very expensive
- Not as much depth as other programs
Northeastern University Pros - Most of the pros from Boston University apply to Northeastern too
- Nice choice in elective programs
- No thesis
Cons - Worst ranked
- Don't provide much support in securing a sponsor
UvA/VU Pros - Great selection of data science/machine learning courses
- Opportunity for long internship
Cons - Difficulty securing housing in Amsterdam (housing crisis)
- Courses seem very demanding
Wageningen Pros - University that specializes in the life sciences
- Housing may not be as difficult to find/expensive as Amsterdam
Cons - Courses don't look as appealing to me
Right now I'm leaning on either Boston University or the University of Amsterdam (UvA/VU) but I'd love to hear your opinion!
Thank you

The upcoming sequel's predecessor requires no explanation, as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse not only ensnared audiences and critics alike but also caught a prestigious Oscar win with a Best Animated Feature award. With "New York's one and only Spider-Man," Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), now becoming a household name, fans of the first film eagerly awaited the day they could see young Miles swing into the Spider-Verse again.

This time Miles will not only be reunited with Gwen Stacey (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) but he'll also be introduced to an entire multiversal society of Spider-people created and led by a particularly pessimistic variant of Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Though some of the other variants in this secretive organization view Miles as a nuisance more than anything else, they'll have to learn to put those apprehensions aside if they hope to save the multiverse from an all-new terrifying threat. How to Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
There's been no official announcement regarding Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's streaming release date, though we know it will eventually be released on Netflix, rather than Disney+ or HBO Max.
In terms of which of the streaming giants Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on, Netflix will house the film upon its streaming debut. While again, Sony does not have its own dedicated streaming service, a deal was struck in 2021 between the studio and Netflix. The deal, stating that Netflix would stream Sony's films after theatrical release, was penned for 5 years meaning Across the Spider-Verse is part of the arrangement.
While Sony's Spider-Man content is also streaming on Disney+, due to the collaborations between Sony and Marvel Studios in recent years, Across the Spider-Verse will be a Netflix release. While the deal struck between Marvel Studios and Sony may extend to this film, Disney+ is only allowed to begin streaming Sony's Spider-Man releases upon their release on Netflix. As a result, Netflix will be the first streaming service that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be available on after its theatrical release.
Because it’s airing on FX, you can of course fire up Into the Spider-Verse via FX Now. But in addition, the animated flick is streaming on both fubo (which offers a free trial and has cord-cutting plans starting at $74.99/month; sign up here) and DirecTV (which also offers a free trial and has cord-cutting plans starting at $64.99/month.
Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in Theaters?
Not only was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the subject of rave reviews, but it also pulled in some gargantuan levels of cash at the international box office, with a final tally that quadrupled the film's ninety-million dollar budget. With incredible success like that, it's only natural that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would also be taking advantage of a theatrical release. That is the case, as the upcoming film will be exclusively available in theaters when it premieres on June 2nd, 2023.
When Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be on Streaming?
The Spider-Man franchise is in a pretty interesting place regarding streaming. The various films of Sony's franchise have typically been scattered across multiple services. That said, following a historic deal between Sony and Disney, the many stories of Peter Parker and beyond are now available on Disney+. This includes the original Sam Raimi trilogy, the first Amazing Spider-Man film, and, starting mid-May, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Venom. Notably absent from the Disney-streaming platform so far are The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Morbius, and most significant of all, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Some of the films are not currently available on the service because Sony has pre-existing partnerships with Starz, as that's where most of the absent films are available to stream. That is except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is instead only streaming on Fubo TV and FX Now.
If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse comes to Disney+ before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's theatrical run concludes, that would make the House of Mouse's service a likely contender for a streaming release. However, Sony has also historically partnered with Netflix for streaming releases. Up until recently, that's where Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was available to stream, and Sony still brings their other big releases to the service, like Bullet Train and The Woman King.
When will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse be streaming on Netflix?
Sony Animation’s big new Spider-Man movie is about to hit theaters and will be headed to Netflix (at least in the United States) later this year. For a prediction as to when and a bit more about the new movie, here’s what you need to know.
As we covered in 2021, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be headed to Netflix as the service gets both Sony’s animation and live-action content via a first window deal struck in April 2021.
The deal stipulates that all Sony theatrical movies come to Netflix in the first window, which at a minimum, is 120 days after its theatrical release date. If it arrives exactly 120 days after, it’ll be streaming from September 30th, 2023.
With that said, given how big this movie is, we may see it release a few weeks after the fact. Either way, we expect the movie to be available between late September and November 2023.
Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be Streaming On Netflix?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is coming to Netflix approximately in December 2023.
In 2021, Sony and Netflix signed a five-year deal that gave the latter exclusive first-pay-window U.S. streaming rights for Sony Pictures titles after their theatrical and home entertainment windows. Fans can expect to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Netflix six months after the film’s theatrical release, thus in December 2023. The date seems reasonable considering that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped on Netflix on June 26, 2019, six months after its U.S. release on December 14, 2018. The pay-one window usually begins about nine months after a film’s theatrical release, but it might start earlier in particular cases.
Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be On HBO Max?
No, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will not be on HBO Max since it’s not a Universal Pictures movie. Last year, the company released its films in theaters and on the streamer on the same day. However, they now allow a 45-day window between the theatrical release and the streaming release.
Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be Streaming On Disney+?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also coming to Disney Plus approximately in 2025.
Once the pay-one window runs its time and Netflix’s exclusive rights expire, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be available on Disney Plus. The pay-one window might last as long as 18 months, which means it will be a while before Disney Plus subscribers can watch the much-anticipated sequel. Unlike in other countries, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t yet available on the Disney-owned streamer in the U.S.
American fans will have to wait until 2024 to watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and at least until 2025 for its sequel. We will update this post once there is an official Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Disney Plus release date.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. That's why you see in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting. Maybe resetting' wasn't a good term.only
In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.

2023.06.02 22:17 Yanikguillemette Yanik Guillemette
| Photo: Donald Robitaille A partner of small and medium-sized businesses as well as local merchants, Outgo is now coveted by major corporate players. Founded in 2016 by Yanik Guillemette , the company — which offers activities, gift ideas and tourist experiences — generates an average of 10M impressions per year, via the Google and Bing search engines, bringing nearly 300,000 clicks on the pages of their partners. Barely out of the pandemic period, the founder and his vice-president of business development, Marc-Antoine Perron , met with Le Grenier to discuss effective strategies that make the company shine and the new offer. Outgocorporate. Tell us a bit about Outgo ! What is the company 's background ? "The excessive discount is not something that lasts in the long term", advises us from the outset Yanik Guillemette , speaking of the 2016 market, which he considered saturated with discount sellers. “In fact, at the base, we really wondered about this formula and we didn't understand how merchants who joined discount sites managed to make a profit margin. And on the other hand, we noticed that the conditions of purchase of several of these discount sites consisted most of the time in trapping the consumer by stuffing the purchase with all kinds of constraints. I wondered if there was a good way to offer experiences and if it was also possible to fill an offer with quality merchants, who you don't often see at a discount. This bet, Yanik Guillemette succeeded well. During the year 2020, Outgohired 18 new employees to meet growing demand and in 2021, the Quebec company is looking for developers to bring all IT development in-house But the founder does not take all the credit for alone and attributes a large part of the success to the organization behind Outgo : “Our growth has been and continues to be by word of mouth and by organic means. If it works so well, it's because we rely on exceptional customer service and a team that cares. » You have something new to share, a corporate service offered by the Outgo Networkinc. to large companies in Quebec. Tell us about this initiative: how was it born? As was the case for many companies, Outgohas been hard hit by the pandemic, Yanik Guillemette points out : “We are a website that probably represents the hardest hit industry. We have put everything in place to protect as much as possible our reason for existing, namely businesses in Quebec. This is where we transformed this difficult situation into a great opportunity, in particular by launching a campaign to support local merchants, by improving gift cards and by making compromises on our side. And then, suddenly, it was a call from a big customer, who wanted to offer gift cards to his employees to thank them, which launched Outgotowards a new initiative: “We changed course on a dime to meet this new demand. In fact, we did not offer this kind of service, but we thought we had to develop a solution that would allow this customer to send gift cards virtually. It was really part of our corporate DNA because it reinforced our desire to act as a transmission belt between those who want to offer experiences and those who want to benefit from them or make others benefit from them” . Indeed, offering gifts of recognition by the hundreds, or even by the thousands, is no small feat, explains the founder: "In order to respond to this new demand, which has only grown moreover, we have developed a 100% digital corporate gift sending service that manages the order from A to Z. In other words, our tool is used to send gift cards by email in a personalized way, and can be transformed into a gift box , all delivered by secure mail, anywhere across Canada. But this service is used by both large and small companies, and we also have enormous success with social clubs and employee associations. How does this initiative fit into Outgo 's strategic vision ? Marc-Antoine Perron insists on the importance of the Outgo catalogin the company's strategic vision: “If we didn't have an interesting catalog, we would never have had the opportunity to develop the corporate component. That's kind of what makes us so popular, in addition to our business model that we don't take a commission. Merchants who join our site and who offer their products or experiences pay an annual membership fee to enjoy great visibility, as evidenced by the new initiative of gift boxes and corporate gift cards. We are soon approaching 500 partners on the platform and we are aiming for double that. Things are moving fast and we can see that this objective is achievable. We are aware that local merchants come because they see what is interesting for them and vice versa, customers come to us because they find the offer interesting. It finally comes back to this idea of a transmission belt that I was talking about Yanik earlier. Our mission is this: to provide the best service to the parties involved”. In closing, Yanik Guillemette tells us that the future for Outgo, is to develop the Quebec and Canadian market: “We have identified partners in Alberta. I see it as an opportunity to show Quebec to the rest of Canada and vice versa. It is still in development, but we also have a European counterpart who has targeted us and who would like to jointly develop offers”. submitted by Yanikguillemette to u/Yanikguillemette [link] [comments] |

Hello all!
I am a composer and songwriter, and make music in many styles for games, film, podcasts, advertisements, youtube intros and outros etc. My catalog is linked below. Right now it’s around 200 or more songs.
The songs are mostly (almost all) instrumental, across many genres and moods. There is electronic music, guitar rock, heavy metal, jazz fusion, bossa nova end samba, acoustic and classical guitar solo instrumentals and even circus music played on a typical organ.
Also, there is a collection of a few dozens of 30 second blues jingles, ideal for intros and outros and also short transitions or advertisements, instrumentals of course, in various tempos.
For now I’m not doing custom music (that is, new scores on demand) for time constraints caused by other personal projects, but the catalog is constantly updated as I add more material. I’d say that it’s almost certain that the music you need for your film or project is already there, waiting for you. Also, a huge update is coming with more than 150 instrumentals, mostly beat-like backing tracks without vocals or distracting melodies for situations that require this type of audio.
Have a great week all!

I’d say that it’s almost certain that the music you need for your video or project is already there, waiting for you. Also, a huge update is coming with more than 150 instrumentals, mostly beat-like backing tracks without vocals or distracting melodies for situations that require this type of audio.
Have a great week all!

2023.06.02 19:27 Sprunt86 New Periphery Fan Impact
I had to share how much I've enjoyed this band recently.
So I discovered Periphery years ago when I stumbled upon Icarus Lives on SiriusXM. I really thought the intro riff was incredibly unique and it was something that stuck in my head for a while. Fast-forward many years when P4 came out - I got hooked on their sound. I’ve always been a huge fan of Progressive Metal bands like Mastodon, Opeth, etc, but this band struck me as very unique. I’d say I really enjoyed about 60% of the album and would only skip a few songs here and there. Overall a great album to me at the time.
My interest fell off for a few years until P5 dropped and I gave it probably 4 listens before it clicked. This album really is great. Almost every song is infectious and repeatable. After giving Dracul Gras a 3rd really good listen – it’s now become one of my favorite songs in their entire catalog. Not to mention as a HUGE Final Fantasy/Nobuo Uematsu fan, seeing the last track’s title and hearing the FF7 theme? I was floored.
After realizing the depth of their talent, I finally went back a few weeks ago and listened to (for the first time) P2, P3, and Juggernaut. Man oh man, some of these albums are just incredible. It kills me knowing I could have been listening to these songs this entire time. I will say I am not a fan of P3. None of the songs really pulled me in and I found myself uninterested still after about the 3rd playthrough. Maybe that will change in time. However, P2 and Juggernaut are absolutely fucking filled with banger after banger. I am a HUGE fan of concept albums and I’ll say at this point I am having trouble ranking P2 and Jugg against each other. They are so sonically and thematically different it really is tough. My gut is telling me I love Jugg more just because of the call backs in each track. I LOVE how they keep calling back to previous track melody’s i.e. The Scourge ending and Psychosphere intro. It’s so fucking good. Then you have P2 with tracks like Have a Blast and Erised, not to mention the Somewhere in Time trio. Such great tracks. When I first heard the chorus of Have a Blast after that ethereal guitar section, I got goosebumps man. So good. Of course there are tracks here and there on both albums I will still skip just because it doesn’t fit my taste, but that’s fine with me.
Sorry for the long winded post…I just felt the need to let this community know that this band has another very devoted fan and I’m super stoked to dig even deep into their discography. Super happy to be here!

Memory transcription subject: Professor Haeli, Galactic Music Professor at White Hill University Date [standardized human time]: September 7, 2136 I've always taken my work seriously. Music might not be as directly applicable as engineering or business but it does have influence over the public. Even as an entry-level professor, I put forth great effort in my work. Even if it was for my own desire for integrity.
Still, Blyne’s expectations were surprising.
It's not that I felt incapable. Rather, no one had ever approached me with something so…delicate. This was a new development, something that had been lacking in my field for as long as I could remember.
So, naturally, I found myself completely and utterly stumped.
I was glad to see such importance placed on my position. I was often used to music being overlooked. For as much as the Federation touted the cultural advantage of prey species over the dreaded Arxur, songs didn’t defend the planet from raids. Guns did. I recognized that reality but often felt as though musical education was overly neglected. Despite the promise of newfound attention, being in such an unfamiliar situation had my nerves frazzled.
I was hoping Grace, being a professional Human musician, could offer me some insight on what I should do.
“The headmaster wants me to prove that Humans and Venlil have a place in one anothers’ societies. I can’t figure out how I’m supposed to prove that. I teach music, not socioeconomics.”
“I think he’s just looking for something practical, love. Maybe I could do a little virtual performance for him over video; show him that Humans are perfectly capable of cultural intelligence, and that we can be cordial in a performance setting.”
I still wasn’t used to her calling me ‘love’ like that. Apparently it was a dialect thing.
“That might help my case if it’s not too much trouble. He seems genuinely interested in what Humans are capable of.”
Could I even get Blyne to watch something like that though? He said he supports my efforts but still… “Which reminds me, we still haven’t done a video call yet.”
I had tried so desperately to avoid the topic but she was always steering our conversation toward that fact. She was within her rights to desire such a thing. That was, after all, the point of the program.
“Grace, I know it’s only a matter of time. I just…It’s scary.”
“I assure you I don’t pose any threat. Look, if you’re going to get through all of this, you’ll need to make peace with our faces. Your student has already managed it. As his teacher, you shouldn’t let him overtake you so easily, in my honest opinion. You should be able to surpass him.”
“Sounds like an awfully competitive approach. Are all Humans that way?”
“You call that competitive? I’d call it a simple expectation. You’re supposed to be the one paving the way. That’s why you came up with this project, yeah?”
I sighed. She was right. It was my cowardice that was barring me from progressing. I’d decided to start this study and now I was being passed up by my own students.
“Alright. You win. Just…could you turn to the side at first. I don’t want to be met with predator eyes immediately.”
“Of course. I’ll turn the camera off if it goes to shite. But, I think you’ll find I’m less monstrous than you might imagine.”
I’d seen reference images. In some way, they were rather flimsy looking. Despite the piercing binocular eyes, they didn’t have the long claws or powerful builds of the Arxur. Still, even the still reference photos had sent a shiver down my spine.
This is Grace, though. You know her. It’s not some unnamed Human model. I pulled the exchange app up to the computer screen, bracing myself for the Human visage.
“I’m ready.”
“Very well. I’m putting it on.”
The screen changed to reveal a Human side profile. Instantly, my heart rate shot up and I gripped the sides of my chair.
“Haeli, love? Are you alright? I actually can’t tell since I’m looking the other way.”
“I-I’m fine. I j-just need to a-adjust.”
“Take your time. It’s alright.”
Grace had switched from her regular voice to the sing-song voice she had used when I’d first spoken to her. The melodious tone helped to put me at ease.
I took deep, slow breaths to steady myself. My muscles began to relax and the shaking receded. I looked down to find that my claws had torn through the fabric on the armrests of my seat involuntarily.
I didn’t know my claws could even cut that well. The realization gave me enough of a distraction to steady myself completely. I focused on the screen and took the image in. Grace’s one visible pupil and skin were different shades of brown. She wore a gray artificial pelt that ran over her shoulders and down out of the frame. Her hair, a deep black, sat tied back and drooping down behind her head. Her nose jutted outward to about the average length I’d seen in the references. Just as well, her mouth was fairly small, not lending itself to the idea of a jagged-toothed predator.
Her eyes remained fixed off to the side, trying not to look at me.
Welp. Here comes the hard part. “I’m calm, I think. Please, turn to face me. I know that’s how Humans usually communicate.”
“Alright, I’ll turn my eyes first by themselves slowly. Then I’ll turn my whole chair.”
I flicked my ears in acknowledgement though she was no doubt unable to see it. In fact, she was probably unfamiliar with the motion in the first place.
How unfortunate to not be able to communicate in such ways. I wonder how Humans read each others’ body language? As I considered such a thing, her one visible eye slowly swept towards the camera. After a moment, it was trained on me. I flinched slightly at the realization but stayed firm, continuing my deep breathing.
“I’m turning the chair now.”
Slowly, her whole body turned to face me, her eyes, now both visible, remained trained on the camera as though they were locked in their orientation. I shuddered at the sheer accuracy of her vision, letting out a slight whimper by accident.“Too much?”
“N-no. I-I’ll get through th-this. I h-have to.”
Grace slowly nodded her head in a motion I didn’t recognize. Submission? Concern?
Wait…I think I read that it was acknowledgement. Maybe I should do that in place of ear flicks. It’d be something we can both do and read easily. That is, if I can get through this without having a fucking heart attack. Grace’s face was fully facing the camera. Part of me expected something terrible to happen, like my subconscious was warning me of impending doom even as my logical mind knew that it was just a video call. I held my eye up to her predatory stare, gripped by terror but unmoving regardless.
Of course, nothing actually happened. As I sat there in my office, far from any threat, I began to slowly let myself go slack. The tension I’d been experiencing left my body in increments. I took the time to study her more closely as curiosity got the better of me.
As I’d expected, the eyes were really the only threatening thing about her. Granted, her mouth was closed so I didn’t get a look at her teeth. From what I had heard, the Human canines were rather small and they also had teeth for crushing plant matter similar to our own.
“Are you…s-seriously an apex predator?”
The words had left my mouth before I had a chance to consider them. Even in my fearful state, I managed to question a predator’s ability to hunt. Was I out of my mind? Would that make her angry?
Her hand shot up to cover her mouth as she giggled in response. She was laughing at me?
“Oh, trust me, love. We didn’t become apex predators with our natural armaments. We were just smart enough to use strategy. That, and we can put just about anything on a hell of a flight path. Humans are rather well-versed when it comes to throwing.
Throwing things? There’s no way that’s all it takes. “H-how does throwing things m-make you a good predator?”
“Prey animals on Earth can be dangerous up close. I know that’s a foreign concept for the Venlil but such wildlife can be difficult to hunt for that reason. Can’t get close? Fashion a spear and strike from afar. Simple as that.”
Dangerous prey? Humans must not be that naturally threatening if they consider prey dangerous. As she gave me her explanation, I found myself beginning to fully relax. Despite the fact that she was talking about hunting, it was still
her voice, one I’ve become familiar with over the last few paws. That recognition became my anchor, allowing me to make peace with her visage. It helped that she lacked the massive fangs and claws of an Arxur. It would take some time to adjust but I could accept the forward-facing eyes. That wasn’t enough to make a Human dangerous by itself.
I slowly raised my ears from the top of my head and tried to sit with the confidence befitting a professor.
“I a-apologize. I’m usually n-not such a mess.”
“I’ve heard plenty of disastrous stories about partner introductions. Comparatively, I think you’re doing quite well.”
“Th-thank you.”
I was doing it. I was speaking with a predator. This is what I’d expected of myself at the beginning but I still felt surprised. My desire to converse with Humans had come from my passion, my drive to make a difference and learn new things. My aversion had come from my experience, having only known predators as evil monsters for all my life. The two lines of reasoning were clashing in my mind. But, I could feel the optimism winning out. I could do this.
“So,” Grace continued. “How about we drum up a catalog I can play for the headmaster? I’m sure between the two of us, we can make something appealing.”
“R-right. That’s a good idea.”
Can I really get Blyne to listen to her? I guess I have no reason not to try. He's been supportive thus far. Part of me wished the doubters had been right; that Humans would have no musical complexity. Now I’m faced with a daunting challenge. I could only hope that I had the capabilities to succeed, not just for my own sake, but for our chances of working with Humans in the future.

Memory transcription subject: Kila, Venlil Engineering Student (First Year) White Hill University Date [standardized human time]: September 7, 2136 If the simulations were trustworthy, the slender metal tubing I’d left laying in my dorm room should work well enough.
Theoretically, of course. Unfortunately, I was still missing the most important part. The vibration mechanism was continuing to act as my biggest roadblock. I’d been engrossed with the project against my better judgment since my call with Brad. I would probably benefit from a break but the frustration of not being able to figure it out had taken me hostage. Even in the midst of lectures, I was playing with the simulation rather than taking notes.
“Kila, the lesson ended some time ago. Are you stumped by something?”
The words of Professor Gretty snapped me out of my focus. Despite my wide field of vision, I’d still somehow managed to ignore the entire lecture hall being vacated. I felt my face turn orange with embarrassment.
“No, sir. Actually, I was working on my own project. Sorry, I might have not been paying as much attention as I should have been.”
He flicked his tail in a motion of indifference.
“You’re one of the more capable students in this class. Not many students attend office hours for the first five sessions.”
It was no exaggeration. As the term had begun, I’d confided in Professor Gretty for an early engineering project. It had been my goal to overachieve initially to give myself a buffer in case I struggled later on. All in all, I was glad for those efforts now that I was most definitely slacking in regards to my school work.
“I’m glad you think highly of me sir. You’re a capable teacher in your own right.”
“I appreciate the compliment but I must say I’m curious. What exactly are you working on that has your attention so captivated that you don’t notice that you’re in a room devoid of people?”
“I’m trying to figure out how to redesign a h-”
Probably shouldn't bring up the specifics. It's a touchy subject. “-an instrument for Venlil use. It typically uses a method of playing that we can’t naturally replicate. Basically, I need to cause buzzing at this point to vibrate the air column in the instrument.”
I motioned to the point on the model. The mechanism needed to be small, able to fit into the end of the tubing. I’d been hashing out ideas for far longer than I would have liked.
“The main trick,” I continued. “Has to do with the changing frequency. See, it has to change along with the slide as it moves in and out. Also, it has to be able to change harmonics depending on each position. The player needs to push air through the system to maintain the internal state. So, I need a way to create the vibrations independent of that while still allowing air to pass through. As of right now, I'm just trying to work through the math and figure out what frequencies I need at what lengths to get everything resonating properly.”
Gretty studied the design closely, taking stock of the model thus far.
“Odd. I’ve never seen an instrument like this before. Why rework an instrument anyway? You're not a music student. Is it a personal project?”
Glad that he didn’t pry anymore into the origins of the device, I answered before he could decide to.
“Yes, it’s a personal project. A friend of mine actually is a music student. I thought he might enjoy using an exotic instrument but it’s proving difficult to accommodate for our anatomy.”
“I’m not much of an engineer but I could maybe help you figure out the frequencies required to create the right resonance. Send me the dimensions and I’ll see what I can do.”
“Oh, it’s not that big of a deal, professor. You don’t need to worry about it.”
“Nonsense. I’m happy to see my students applying what they learn even for personal projects. After all, what good would an education be without practical use? Send me the dimensions. I insist.”
I flicked my ears in affirmation.
“Thank you, professor! I’ll get those to you right away.”
“Remember, Kila,” he leaned in for emphasis. “If you run into any issues you think I can help with, I’ll lend you a paw. Just make sure to do your best.”
Flicking my ears one more time, I picked up my belongings and made my way for the exit.
Maybe I should have been less secretive with him. No. I can’t risk it. Human integration is a controversial topic right now. It’s good to know he’s willing to help, though. Having the numbers mapped out would make it way easier to design the mechanism. I could probably emulate the vibrations easily enough. It’d take some tricky robotics to get the different frequency options working. The real question was how to handle the controls. A Venlil player wouldn’t just be able to move the muscles in their mouths the same way a Human can. I’ll need to find a way to get it to respond to the movement in the slide automatically. Then, maybe I could place buttons on the slide itself to change the harmonic up or down. It'd probably have to be a short-range wireless setup. I'd need to make sure there isn't a noticeable delay too.
It’s going to take some finnicking with electronics. I hope I remember how to design compact circuits. Plus there's the code to write. Should be simple enough. All of this for something a Human can do with their lips. I was really running against the wind for this.

Memory transcription subject: Professor Haeli, Galactic Music Professor at White Hill University Date [standardized human time]: September 8, 2136 Entering Blyne’s office, the plateau of paperwork seemed to have only gotten taller. He peaked up over the impending workload, eyes even more tired than before.
“Hello, Professor Haeli. I hope the paw has treated you better than it’s treated me so far.”
I took a seat across from him, just barely able to make him out over the wall of documents.
“Judging by the new height of your desk, I’d say it probably has, headmaster.”
He chuckled at the comment, though the fatigue crept through his features.
“I’m still determined to make time for you. After all, most of this paperwork is awaiting your conclusions anyway.”
I swished my tail in understanding but he may not have noticed given the stacks were impeding his vision.
“Honestly, headmaster, I’m somewhat surprised that you agreed to this. It took me several paws to work up the courage to enter a video call with my partner. Are you sure that this is a good idea?”
“I trusted you to be head over Human studies for the time being. And, I told you that I’d support you where I could. Hundreds of Venlil have entered visual contact with humans. If the integration continues as it has, that number will only grow. I’ll handle it. I trust your judgment. Also, I think I'm too damn tired to bolt from my desk at the sight of your partner.”
Flicking my ears in acknowledgement, I turned my attention to my pad. Navigating the app, I initiated a video call with Grace. Hopefully, she hadn’t forgotten about the time we’d decided on.
I was satisfied to see that she had remembered as her side profile appeared on the screen. I flinched slightly but stayed composed. This time, the camera seemed further away, able to capture the image of both her and her piano. The device was one of the more recognizable Human instruments. According to Grace, it was standard for songwriters to have one. Easy to learn but incredibly difficult to master.
“All set here, love,” she spoke without turning to face me. Instead, her binocular eyes were trained on the pages in front of her.
“Headmaster Blyne, are you ready?” I questioned, giving him one last chance to back out.
“Turn the pad to me, Professor Haeli. I’m prepared.”
I slowly spun the pad around to face Blyne, propping it up against a tower of paper. He tensed up and inhaled sharply at the sight. However, after a moment, he began to relax his muscles.
“G-greetings. My name is B-Blyne. I'm the headmaster at W-White Hill University. To whom d-do I owe the pleasure?”
“My name is Grace Patel. But, I know the Venlil typically only use one name. You may refer to me as just Grace. I'm a professional musician that specializes in this: the piano.”
“W-what a peculiar device,” he observed. “Quite large for a musical instrument, no?”
Despite the initial quiver in his voice, by the time he reached the end of his thought, it already carried the same confidence that was typically present.
He got over it that fast? I guess I should expect nothing else from the headmaster. He’s used to dealing with stress. “Yes, sir,” came Grace’s response. Though, she continued to face the pages. “A grand piano is among the largest despite its commonality. It owes its size to the fact that it’s technically somewhat of a string instrument. Each key moves a small hammer that strikes long, taught strings inside.”
“Fascinating. Could you show me what it sounds like before moving into a full piece?”
“Of course.”
Grace’s hands flew lightly across the keys, rolling up and down scales with ease. I couldn’t imagine Venlil paws being so dexterous. She made it look effortless.
She’s a professional alright. Grace also tapped the keys with different amounts of force, putting the breadth of dynamics on display. Then, she played some chords. At first, they were small and simple but they quickly grew to massive complex variants.
Initially, the fact that they used only half the tones we placed between sets made me believe that their harmonic practice would be lacking. It seemed that was rather short-sighted.
Blyne appeared to be rather entranced by the sound.
“What immense range. You said this was called a grand piano?”
“Yes, sir. There are many variations on the piano but this is the most common for symphony orchestras and solo pieces.”
Blyne flicked his ears in acknowledgement.
“I must say I'm rather impressed thus far. It may come as a surprise but I used to play a couple instruments myself in my younger years. I can tell that you're very technically proficient even by that little demo alone.”
“I like to think that I am. After all, I do this for a living.”
“How fortunate that Human society accommodates for that,” I interjected. “I think most Venlil would expect there to be no room for such a thing in a predatory society.”
Grace squinted her eyes but they remained trained forward.
“It's not exactly an easy occupation, I’m afraid,” she responded. “It's a lot of hours and not always great pay. In the end, it usually gets sidelined for jobs that are considered more practical.”
“It's a similar story within the Federation too. After all, music doesn't grow crops or fight Arxur.”
Blyne seemed to look sympathetic to my plight. He no doubt felt guilty of such standards. Time and time again, the budget had found its way to other departments. Not that I blamed him. There was always pressure from donors and the government. I new technological advancement would always take priority over musical capabilities. That was the truth. And, in all honesty, I couldn't bring myself to disagree completely with the principle.
“Music has its applications,” Grace continued. “It can bridge cultural differences or improve morale in dark times. For Humans, it can also be used to bring awareness to social issues. I'm not sure if that's standard practice for you, though.”
Using music as a form of protest? I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of such a thing. “I understand that Humans have a rich musical history,” Blyne spoke. “I'm intrigued to know what you've selected for us today, Miss Grace.”
“I'm very excited to play for the both of you. I don't believe Haeli has heard this first song yet, either.”
We’d already selected a few pieces some time before. I'd heard each and every one. Yet, she was going beyond our list? I hoped that she knew what she was doing.
“This piece,” she continued. “Was written by Claude Debussy a little over two hundred years ago during the standard Human year of 1905. It was made exclusively for piano. Today, it’s regarded as a classic.”
Grace sat up in her seat and hovered her hands over the keys.
"The title of this piece is
Moonlight."
She scooted herself ever so slightly closer to the behemoth of an instrument and entered a state of visible focus.
Then, gently, she pressed down on the keys.
The sound was nearly inaudible. Grace’s dexterous hands tapped gently along the instrument, leaving ample space between the groupings of tones. It didn't seem like she was abiding by any particular rhythmic structure. It was loose but not in a chaotic sense. The tune drifted lazily from each point to the next like petals in a breeze. Harmonically, it felt melancholy; not bright and cheerful but not necessarily dark either.
This changed for a brief moment where the chords became somber. However, the higher tones returned with a kind of arcing motion to counterbalance it. Grace’s timing lent itself to a rising and falling motion to match the tonal development.
Soon, those arcs turned into cascades, starting slowly and gradually increasing in tempo. I almost didn't notice the volume increasing alongside it. The chords began to feel more foreboding. I could feel my heart rate rising as Grace vaulted into increasingly dark tonal motion.
Then, suddenly, she played a bright pattern in an upwards motion, much more lightly than the cascades before. The motion was repeated a few times, each one lower in volume.
After a moment of blissful serenity, Grace’s playing took on a quality that I could only describe as wonderment. Once again, the piece became dynamically louder. The rate of tones increased but didn't carry the darkness from before. Instead, the harmonies were bright and easy on the ears.
The speed at which she played was impressive, though unconventional. Nothing she'd played for me had reached that pace. I wondered if Blyne could handle the sudden jump in tempo. But, when I stole a glance at him, he seemed just as entranced as I was.
For a moment, the tiredness in his eyes seemed replaced with wonder.
The music seemed to falter, not in the executive sense but rather there was a feeling of specifically designed instability. It was as though the piece was portraying a loss of balance, just barely leaning over a sharp edge.
But, just as it seemed about to fall, the volume once more dropped to near silence as it returned to its melancholy origin. It seemed to be nearly identical to the opening. And, after drifting between patterns for a moment, each reminiscent of a broader section of the work, it ended as meekly as it began. I was briefly unsure that it was actually over. It was like it just slipped right out of the room. I only had my confirmation when Grace slid away from the piano.
Blyne and I sat in silence momentarily, soaking in the experience.
“It's been many years since I've heard something so immersive,” Blyne’s voice took on the sound of nostalgia. “Truly, that was encapsulating.”
I flicked my ears in acknowledgement.
“I'm not sure I fully understood the symbolism though. It's likely a planetary difference. How do Humans interpret the moon?”
Grace tilted her head to the side in a look I assumed was confusion until realization hit her.
“Ah, I almost forgot that's what it translates to. See, the title is in a different language than the one I speak. I speak primarily English but the title is French. Your translators seem not to discriminate. If you wouldn't mind, turn them off for just a moment and I'll say the title verbatim.”
Blyne and I both complied with the request, powering them off and flicking our ears in a ‘go ahead’ motion. After the motion was lost on her briefly, Grace realized we were ready and spoke the title once more.
“
Claire de Lune.”
It sounded starkly different to the Venlil sound that it had been translated to. Though, it sounded almost melodious in nature.
After we turned the translators back on, Grace continued her thought.
“To answer your question, Haeli, the moon can mean a number of different things depending on culture. But, one thing that is constant is its association with the night. I'd say in this context, it served as the inspiration in a sort of atmospheric sense. You may equate it to a picturesque street illuminated only by a few lamps and the moonlight from above. It's serene in that regard.”
“It was a beautiful piece,” I assured her. “But, it wasn't one we selected beforehand. What made you want to perform it?”
“Honestly, I would have very well suggested it earlier had I remembered it. It just popped into my head after the fact and I thought it would be a perfect introductory piece.”
“To that, I can agree,” Blyne offered. “I can tell that immense thought was put into the composition of the piece. And, I can tell that you have spent much time honing your craft. As such, I have a request.”
A request? “Please, miss Grace, turn to face the camera.”
I tensed up. Even after already exposing myself to her face, I felt reluctant to have her eyes burrow into me again.
“Are you sure about that, sir?” Grace asked tentatively.
“I understand that you haven't been able to see us so far. And that, for Humans, looking away is often considered rude. It's probably been difficult to remain facing away from us this whole time. The least I can do for such a stunning performance is to look you in the eyes.”
Grace looked unsure but slowly she turned to face us. I felt my muscles tense further and Blyne stiffened across from me as well.
“You really needn't subject yourself to this,” Grace spoke, clearly noting our collective discomfort.
“I f-feel inclined to disagree,” came Blyne’s response. “If we are to live and w-work with Humans, we will need to overcome our instincts. I'm willing to give that an honest try just as Professor Haeli here is too.”
“I appreciate the effort. Truly, I do. But, save your energy. That song is not all I intend to play for you. Haeli and I selected quite the program.”
I flicked my ears in acknowledgement and accompanied it with a head nod for Grace.
“Yes, indeed. I believe you'll very much enjoy the rest of these, headmaster.”
And so we continued, traipsing through various piano melodies. From the slow, methodical sounds of
Gymnopédie No. 1 to the almost haunting motion of
Arietta, we sat enamored by Grace’s playing until, finally, we ran the established catalog dry and she bid us farewell before signing off.
Now in the silent office, Blyne suddenly fell against the wall of papers.
“Stars,” he spoke through the now collapsed pages. “I'm too old for this, Haeli. Her playing was incredible. And, I think I did well as a professional but her eyes are still terrifying.”
“I know how you feel. My student says you get used to it pretty fast, though.”
“To be young and have that kind of flexibility. It's going to take me some time, I think.”
“You held together well all things considered. I cut into the fabric of my chair with my claws just from tensing up so much.”
“Don't go destroying university property, now. We just got those chairs two terms ago. Also, about that student of yours, he's made quite the amount of headway, yes?”
I thought back to Mezil’s progress. It had certainly been more than I’d expected from any of my students.
“Yes. Grace was encouraging me to get him more involved. I can only really think of one way to do it. Actually, after her performance, I have a pretty ambitious idea.”
Blyne lifted his head from the paperwork and eyed me warily.
“You need my help, I assume.”
“I'll definitely need the go-ahead from you for this one. That, and I'll probably need some help figuring out the logistics.”
He sighed and started straightening out the stack he'd toppled.
“Alright then, Professor Haeli. What is your plan?”
