One of the most prominent sweet treats you're likely to see on your road trip across Ukraine is Verhuny. They are not just a part of the pantheon of Ukrainian desserts - in fact, they are a member of a veritable club of "fried dough cookie/pastry kinds of things" commonly referred to internationally as angel wings, a dish that is itself a notable member of the grander European family of cuisine. Ukraine's version also its own unique details. Verhuny are fried dough pastries that have often been kissed by just a little alcohol - like Horilka. While I don't believe I've ever heard of them being made with yeasted dough, they were/are often traditionally made with cultured dairy products like sour cream or Kefir (I included a Kefir-based recipe below). If you're a civilized person that is an enjoyer of fried dough confections, Verhuny will introduce itself as an old familiar friend. Okay, don't make eye contact. Just keep walking. Verhuny come in many shapes and sizes depending on the mood or inclinations of the chef. Its name likely comes from an old word that means to weave. It's also worth mentioning that it is not uncommon in Ukraine for this same type of cookie to be referred to as Khrustyky (which roughly means crunchy things), which is also what they are referred to as in Poland from what I gather. A Verhun by any other name would indeed taste as sweet. These are very old desserts - in fact, there's a whole museum called the Living Museum of Verhuny that is dedicated to this cookie in Poltava region! Here are some pics of their sweet activities: The museum holding an event. This woman looks just like my Aunt Marusya. Photo: ĐĐĐĐĐ ĐĐŁĐĐĐ ĐĐľŃĐłŃĐ˝Ńв on Facebook. There was a flour accident. Photo: ĐĐĐĐĐ ĐĐŁĐĐĐ ĐĐľŃĐłŃĐ˝Ńв on Facebook. This is how Ukrainians feel about Verhuny. Photo: ĐĐĐĐĐ ĐĐŁĐĐĐ ĐĐľŃĐłŃĐ˝Ńв on Facebook. Verhuny are super easy to make at home. Made at home is best! I would like to hold a little poll in the comments because you may have noticed I am being coy and non-committal about using the terms cookie vs. pastry in regards to Verhuny. Please leave a comment dissertation on which terms best fits this delicacy. _______________________________ How to Make Verhuny Photo: Klopotenko.com Recipe from Ievgen Klopotenko! Ingredients - 400 g All Purpose Flour (+ for dusting the working surface)
- 250 g Kefir (preferably 2.5%)
- 100 g Sugar
- 1 Egg
- ½ tsp. Baking Powder
- 500 ml of Sunflower oil for deep frying
- 50 g of powdered Sugar (for dusting the Verhuny)
Recipe Step 1: In a deep bowl combine flour, baking powder, and sugar. Step 2: Beat 1 egg and add it to the flour fix. Add Kefir. Mix with a spoon. Step 3: Dust the work surface with flour and knead the dough until it does not stick to your hands. You can use a kitchen aid with a proper attachment. Step 4: Make a ball from the dough, wrap in cling film and leave to rest for 20 minutes. Step 5: Cut off a section of a dough and roll it out into a round shape about 3 - 4mm thick (0.1-0.15 of an inch). Step 6: Cut strips about 6cm (2.5 inches) wide and cut them into rhombuses 9-10cm long (little under 4 inches). Step 6. Step 7: Make a 4cm (~1.5 inch) slit in the middle of each and pull one edge through the that slit in the middle you just made. Step 7. Step 8: Heat a pan, or a deep fryer with 500 ml of sunflower oil. Fry the dough on both sides, turning with a slotted spoon until a brown crust appears. Step 9: Put the finished Verhuny on a plate covered with a paper towel to absorb excess oil. When they cool down, sprinkle 50 g of powdered sugar and serve. Step Eat. _______________________________ The 466th day of a nine year invasion that has been going on for centuries. Ken Ohka đ¤ (as May Suruga) & Baliyan Akki â ď¸
VS
Tokiko âOtokiâ Kirihara đ & Cherry đ
Ken Ohka, the hero of Ganbare Pro-wrestling, is basically a regular part of ChocoPro as well at this point. When heâs not working with food at DDTâs restaurant Ebisco Sakaba with Obi or getting the crowd roaring at GanPro, heâs spearing someone out of their boots in Ichigaya! This man is enthusiastic about everything he does, even when he is occasionally pretending to be Mei Suruga. Now that âMay Surugaâ has been officially recognized, be careful not to be overwhelmed by his charm.
Baliyan Akki & Mei, the regular Best Bros, are one of the greatest Tag Teams out there. Baliyan Akki keeps a serene attitude while dealing out some of the most devastating strike comboâs youâll ever witness. The âZephyr of Ichigayaâ is among the best when it comes to in ring quality, but how well will he handle this replacement Mei? Ken & Akki have teamed together in the past (especially in GanPro!), but this false version of the beloved tag team is still untested. How will the Apple Substitution go? Can the Ace find that awesome synergy with a different âMeiâ?
Cherry Comaneci returns!? The Showa Era Shooters
Tokiko âOtokiâ Kirihara & Cherry are two of a kind! Will these two show the boys the power of their physical perfection? Otoki is a very down to earth fighter for the most part, bringing a vicious realism that is a bit more visceral than a lot of the high characters of ChocoPro! Though the Iron Claw user might occasionally pull off a Comaneci Taunt or torturous twist, she's known for her ungodly kicks and throws...She was a champion Kickboxer, after all! Mischievous Fortune Teller Cherry also brings a lot of ground work and technical prowess, being able to slickly roll into pins and armbars. Cherry is one of the scariest grapplers to grace Ichigaya, considering she even gives a rough time to a lot of the power fighters! Can the False Best Bros bring down these dynamic pair?
Mei Suruga đ
VS
Sayaka đ
Whether you know her as the Apple Goblin or the Big Apple Girl,
Mei Suruga is a vast sea of charisma. The real Red Fairy of Ichigaya tends to convert new viewers into her âdummiesâ quite quickly, even the coldest heart finding it hard to resist her charm and explosive wrestling ability...despite her being so utterly rotten most of the time! She is undeniably a rising star of the Joshi world...making appearances for STARDOM, TJPW, DPW, AEW, Evolution Girls, DDT, and many more! Though the Goblin tends to appear mostly in tags at Ichigaya these days, singles are a rare tasty treat for her: Mei loves getting an opportunity to be a goblin the entire match! With her 5th Anniversary in the rear view, the Apple Road continues...with a pit stop in violence city.
âI'm gonna kill you! Yayyyyy!â While she has become infamous for her unsettling quotes, âSmiling Violenceâ
Sayaka is known more for her ungodly striking power. Those explosive forearms and pinpoint dropkicks stagger even the toughest opponents! Sayakaâs unnerving cheerfulness while she does brutal things provides her with a big presence in the square. That unattached joy will eventually be the stuff of legends! (After all, sheâs âhappy to beat someoneâ!) Don't forget, Sayaka hangs out around Minoru Suzuki and survives to tell the tale...This photogenic phenom is on the rise, keep an eye on her! After the Lucky Violence team managed to deliver some brutality during the Birthday Gauntlet, Sayaka will be delighted to bring more pain to the Apple Goblin.
EGG TART (Chie Koishikawa đľď¸ & Hagane Shinno âď¸)
VS
GanProâs Shota âž & Miya Yotsuba đ
Chie Koishikawa & Hagane Shinno, the combination known as EGG TART, are a hot and cold team. Opposites definitely attract, and the polar attraction results in some of the craziest team attacks you will ever witness! âToo Much Energyâ Chie brings an uncontrollable excitement wherever she goes (including to the recently rebooted GanJo), sprinting around the Square and delivering lightning quick striking...often from the air! Her tightly locked Stretch Mufflers and eye catching arm drags will have you shouting as much as she does. The Frantic Fencer is one of the most popular characters in all of ChocoPro! Her Wintery partner on the other hand is a remorseless killing machine...and the Super Asia Champion. Haganeâs icy ferocity usually brings about ugly thuds via heavy striking and brutal slams. The âCold Killerâ earned his epithet by easily dispatching some of the best the promotion has to offer. This ageless assassin only shows emotion around his chaotic partner...and together they amplify each others personalities. These two have limitless potential, and now that Hagane has the Big Blue Belt they will also have limitless enemies looking for an opportunity! Speaking of which...
Shota, GanProâs charismatic underdog technician, finally makes his official ChocoPro Debut! He might give off some of the same vibes as âGeneric Masaâ from long ago, but there is nothing generic about Shota! This world traveling jump suit enthusiast impresses everywhere he goes, so expect Ichigaya to be no different. Anticipate a lot of flowing transitions and crisp technique! With an unbeatable in ring IQ and a talent for complex pinning skills, âMr. SHOWTIMEâ is going to be a great support for his Rookie partner: The Avatar of the Fifth Generation,
Miya Yotsuba! âIchigayaâs Lucky Charmâ Miya brings a strength empowered style that is quite flashy (especially that Miya Hammer)! Our new powerhouse has begun a series of difficult matches against her seniors (joining gangs and facing clowns, fortune tellers, drunks, cannibals, and the truly wild), in order to speed up her adjustment to Ichigayaâs strange (and vicious) world. Teaming up with guests is a common theme in ChocoPro, so this will be a great test for the Mint-Green Bruiser...especially with a guest this good! Good Luck, Miya!
Letâs Go ChocoPro, Letâs Go GanPro! Come and see the wild creativity that produced Two of the Seven AEW Women's World Champions! (Both of which have appeared on ChocoPro!) You'll be wondering if you're seeing future champs, as well. ChocoPro is the Frontier of Pro Wrestling! Match after match of hard hitting, chaotic, fun bouts with a friendly online audience. We're quickly growing, and you're welcome to come along!
Here are some
Frequently Asked Questions:
âWhat is this?â
ChocoPro is a free online promotion run by AEW's Emi Sakura, that takes place in the legendary Ichigaya Chocolate Square! It features a steady pace of live Episode releases, fan interaction, season long story arcs, and much more! A place where the turnbuckles are replaced with 14th floor windows, the ropes are often replaced with fans, unforgiving walls provide creative avenues for skills otherwise unthinkable, and you can take solace in knowing that the referees usually do nothing. While it might be a shocking change at first, the intensity and storytelling will leave you wanting more.
âWhy are they fighting in ____?â
Short answer is that it is a cost effective, unique venue with a better availability schedule and allows the roster access for training. Emi Sakura has been using this place for a long time, and you might be surprised at some of the names that have used it (even outside of ChocoPro!). There are a few in-ring Episodes and Gatoh Move has in ring shows with crowds on the YouTube channel. Think of it like the Hart Dungeon but as a promotion, if that helps!
âWhat are the rules?â
While special match stipulations will usually be explained before the respective matches, the general rules of ChocoPro are simple. Pins only count on the Chocolate Mat and are not broken by the edge or Wall. Submissions usually only count on the Chocolate Mat, and ARE broken by reaching the edge or wall (sometimes ceiling...). Double pins and Double submissions are legal (and encouraged) in ChocoPro Tag matches, meaning cohesive teams will always have the advantage! Count Outs only exist if specified, since many matches stray from the comfort of the Chocolate Square into the streets (and the rest of the building itself!) There is a Time Limit for each bout (based on card placement and importance) and the Referee has discretion (even if they tend to do nothing most of the time!). Every Ref is different, some have different levels of bias and speed.
âHow can I support them?â
Watch the show! Even if you can't see it live, the views matter! Like & Subscribe! You can join the Channel's membership for different tiers of perks...but also, you can buy single episode Sponsorship, Digital autographed photos, and more
on their shop site as well as purchase shirts from
PWTees (which features some great options!) If you'd like to donate or purchase a main wall sponsorship, you can via
Paypal or
Patreon...and don't forget to cheer for your favorites! (especially if you want to do a superchat!)
âHow come there arenât a lot of comments on the threads?â
ChocoPro is a YouTube show, meaning the discourse happens live...in the chat! Those that comment in the threads on here tend to do so in order to help new viewers that might be intimidated by the fast moving chat. Donât be afraid to just dive in though, the community is friendly.
âWhy are you posting this here? / Are you paid for this?â
This is a wrestling forum, and I'm trying to broaden the horizons of others! There is a lot of good wrestling out there...Plus growing the fan base means more people for me to joke around with! I honestly do believe this is what a lot of fans are looking for, even if it is too different for some! But different tastes are good. Variety is the spice of life. This is a labor of love (it really doesn't take that long) considering how much work they do to put on so many shows...for free!
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me on here or on Twitter, where Iâm everywhere! ChocoPro is going to the UK!
Season Tracker: We're 14/18 into Season 18! (Each Season is usually around 18 episodes)

2023.06.04 00:15 brieeecheese94 New here but wanted to share
So I just wanted to share a poverty meal that I grew up having but now I make it for my family. It is also really healthy!! I didn't know it was an Italian peasant dish until I was an adult and realized my family was poor growing up. Next time I make it I will add a photo.
It's Cannellini and escarole soup (not sure if it has an actual name)
You just need
A little olive oil, garlic, onion, 1 Head Escarole, S&P, can of Cannellini beans, chicken or veggie bullion.
You basically just put some olive oil in a pot, brown some garlic and diced onions, add like 2 cups of water, bring to a simmer, add the bullion, escarole, drained and rinsed beans, salt, pepper. Cover the pot let it simmer for a bit and that's it.
It goes well with homemade bread (which is always cheaper and better than store bought)
You can also add what ever other spices you want. I like to use bay leaves and the great thing is that about everything in this recipe is to taste. But I'm sure there is a proper recipe on google somewhere.
I hope you try it and let me know :)

Master isn't home today (episode 2) Har-gow: Suckling Pig Roast, I really want to make hotpot.
Suckling Pig Roast: Indeed, I haven't had hotpot in a while. Iâm lacking in the warmth and moisture from the soup, itâs like my body strength is being dried up.
Sichuan Hotpot: Hey I overheard you saying that you want to eat hotpot! Coincidentally, I am the best at making hotpot!
Har-gow: Oh no no no. We were talking about Cantonese style hot pot. Sichuan hotpot is way too spicy.
Sichuan Hotpot: Har-gow, how could you not eat because of the fear of choking? Although Sichuan hotpot is spicy, it also has the uniqueness of having a numbing effect and is deliciously fragrant. Thatâs how it became the signature dish of the Sichuan region. You absolutely cannot miss it.
[Scene change]
Sichuan Hotpot: Hotpotâs here!
Suckling Pig Roast: Did I just get a glimpse of hell?
Sichuan Hotpot: You guys exaggerate too much. This is only slightly spicy.
Suckling Pig Roast and Har-gow: Slightly spicy?!
Sichuan Hotpot: Yep.
*Har-gow and Suckling Pig Roast washes the food in their cups*
Sichuan Hotpot: Hey!
[Scene change]
Braised Pork Hock: Ha, Stinky Perch, looks like you still have to exercise more frequently. Why donât I help you?
Stinky Perch: No⌠no need. I- I can do it.
Braised Pork Hock: The weather is getting colder. Be careful not to catch a cold.
Stinky Perch: If only I could eat something that is warm.
Sichuan Hotpot: Hotpot! In ancient times, it was also known as âwarm potâ. Itâs most suited to be eaten during the cold temperatures of winter together with a few friends, enjoying it together. And Sichuan hotpot is meticulously made - it doesnât matter if itâs the making of the soup base, or the ingredients that you put into the hotpot, they are all of the best quality! It can also get rid of rheumatism and strengthen your physical health.
Braised Pork Hock and Stinky Perch: Ooohh.
Sichuan Hotpot: Do you want to give it a try?
Stinky Perch: Can this really be eaten?
Braised Pork Hock: Hmph a man is fearless in the face of danger. Even if I, Braised Pork Hock, am faced with something as spicy as hell, will not be afraid.
Sichuan Hotpot: What are you guys talking about? This is only slightly spicy!
Stinky Perch: How could this be? Your interpretation of slightly spicy is a whole potâs worth of chili peppers?
Sichuan Hotpot: Thatâs right.
[Scene change]
Dezhou Chicken: Whatâs up with him?
Fuli Chicken: Could this be the âgain effectâ that Mapo Tofu often mentions?
Sichuan Hotpot: This is all due to my hotpot. Do you guys want to give it a try?
[Scene change]
Fuli Chicken: *writes the character for âspicyâ on the table*
[Scene change]
Sichuan Hotpot: Itâs my turn today.
[Scene change]
Sichuan Hotpot: Everyone, letâs eat hotpot together!
[Scene change]
Har-gow: Cheers!
Sichuan Hotpot: Alright alright, we couldâve used a mandarin ducks pot^. But hotpot has to be spicy in order to be tasty. Spicy.
[End credits scene]
Harbin Fried Pork reading (with Sichuan Hotpotâs voiceover): How can I review it? Is it wrong of me to treat everyone with hot pot? True, it was a little bit spicy, but this numbing effect from the spice is what causes an appetite. Furthermore, itâs really nice to take a bath whilst in pain. Harbin Fried Pork has punished me by only allowing me to eat hotpot with a mild soup base. That wonât do. Fine, the next time I cook Iâll reduce the amount of chili peppers that I add.
Harbin Fried Pork: I wonder who will be next.
-END-
^Mandarin ducks pot is a hotpot pot that has a divider to separate soup bases. Usually one soup base would be of a mild flavour while the other is spicy.

2023.06.03 03:51 duellingislands 4:51 EEST; The Sun is Rising Over Kyiv on the 465th Day of the Full-Scale Invasion. Another entry in our series on the traditional Ukrainian home. Today we're looking at Skrynya, the decorative but functional chest that can hold all that embroidery! + Discussion + Charities
| đşđŚ ХНава ĐŁĐşŃаŃĐ˝Ń! đşđŚ _______________________________ Part III in our series on elements of the traditional Ukrainian home! Traditional Home Series I: Khata (House) Traditional Home Series II: Pich (Oven) _______________________________ Skrynya Detail from the front of a 19th century Skrynya, from Cherkasy region. Photo from: vskrynia.com.ua We've written several posts about different facets of Ukrainian traditional attire, with perhaps the most iconic garment being the Vyshyvanka (here and here) which are crafted with such a respect for beautiful symbolic patterns. As one of the artisans featured in a previous post said (paraphrasing), âOur people always like to look goodâ. Well, we've never talked about where all these garments would be stored (before IKEA) but there's an interesting piece of culture there, too. The furniture of regular folk in the past, just like today, needed to be as easy to use as it was multifunctional. The "closet" in the traditional Ukrainian home (we wrote about the home, Khata, in this series: Part I Part II) was usually either hung over beams... or it was kept in the Skrynya. Skrynya, the chest, has long been an indispensable element in the decoration of a traditional Ukrainian home. It served as a place to store clothes, Rushnyky, etc. Sometimes it was used as a table and - if the chest was on the bigger side - it could even serve as a bed! My closet is... not as organized. Skrynya, it must be said, were also a part of wedding culture. It's not my favorite aspect of them. Similar to the "dowry chest" in other European cultures, and the "hope chest" concept in America, they were often given to young women so they could assemble items that would supposedly be useful to them during their married life. And so Skrynya were very popular for a wide range of uses, and they were always in demand. An old Ukrainian folk saying plainly indicates their feelings on the matter: "Without a chest there's nothing, because everything's in the chest." Very masterful craftspeople could make a living just making the chests, but of course it was also widespread for people to just make them because they are useful and beautiful even if painted by a non-professional. That means there is a wide variety of intricacy in the examples you'll find in museums, which to me adds a lot of charm and intrigue to this furniture! Before we get into the details, I just want to point out that Radomyshl Castle, the museum we wrote about yesterday, has a fantastic large collection of antique Skrynya. Another reason to visit. _______________________________ Patterns The chests were painted in truly vivid shades, and each region is known for their own preferences (like most folk crafts in Ukraine). There were also types of Skrynya that had no paint; instead they were either decorated with burned-in patterns, or with intricate and delicate carving. Here's a little tour around Ukraine via Skrynya! A 19th century Skrynya from Western Ukraine, Hutsulshchyna and Pokuttya Folk Art Museum. Early 20th century, Ivano-Frankivsk. Photo: Vskrynia.com.ua Detail of Early 20th century, Ivano-Frankivsk. Photo: Vskrynia.com.ua 1920's, Chernivtsi region. Early 20th century, Poltava region. Early 20th century, Kyiv. Early 20th century, Dnipro region. 19th century, Kropyvnytskyi. _______________________________ Community Chest They are pretty big! Mannequins for scale. Most often, chests were painted by the same carpenters who built them. Deciduous trees like oak, maple, or linden were primarily used as the source material for crafting these chests, as their wooden planks were the most ideal blend of pliant and tough. In some areas, though, beech and sycamore were popular. These most richly-ornamented chests could carry quite a hefty price tag, often making them a luxury only the affluent could indulge in. And it was not only a matter of painting, but iron-clad chests were pretty ubiquitous too. They were reinforced with iron bindings, adorned with a variety of hand-wrought details - and were able to be locked. The lock was important because there was generally a smaller box inside the Skrynya that would be used to store highly-valued possessions like jewelry, money, and important family heirlooms. Forged handles embellishing the sides were an integral design feature, making this hefty and sizeable piece of furniture somewhat easier to move, which was important because if there was ever a fire, the Skrynya would be the first thing carried out! Typically, a Rushnyk is draped over the chest as a stylish finishing touch. _______________________________ Sadly, many of the examples you'll see in this post are not in the best of shape. However, it's easy to imagine how unreal and bursting with color these would have been when they were still be used (and cherished) daily. If you've been reading this series since the beginning, it will probably not surprise you that by the 1950s and 1960s, the widespread craftsmanship of Ukrainian chest making had nearly completely disappeared. Nowadays, other than in the workshops of modern folk craftspeople who are reviving the tradition, chests are usually seen only in museums or in the lucky homes that managed to preserve them through the dark times. _______________________________ The 465th day of a nine year invasion that has been going on for centuries. 2023.06.03 03:10 CalicoIda Alice, Saya and Saeko play Ascension: Part 1
I've been thinking about this for a bit and I decided you know what I might as well have Alice and a couple of the other girls play Ascension and try to get to round 30. It was originally supposed to be Saya and Alice playing it but I decided to throw Saeko into the mix to spice things up. The first part will contain rounds 1-10.
Ascension as a map is easy! The reason behind it being easy is the fact that that the map has quite a few open areas where you could run around and gather the zombies into giant hordes and unleash everything onto them plus with some useful tactical grenades and overpowered wonder weapons, this can make for a fun experience.
It's three girls, two guns per girl, five perks (No Mule Kick) with one objective: Survive.
Alice, Saya and Saeko landed into the area with their Lunar Lander as they were trying to figure out where they were in this cosmodrone. Alice looked aroind as Saya tried to figure our what was happening.
"Hey who took the color away?" Saya asked while they were looking around.
"Help me." A voice called out. The three girls turned their heads to figure out who was speaking. "The mechanism must be repaired. Please, she's coming."
"Don't worry sir we'll try to help you." Alice called out to whoever said the mysterious voice that she would try everything to rescue it. "We only have three players and we need four. Who should be the fourth player?" Alice asked as they couldn't save this man with just three players.
"It doesn't matter Alice, let's try our best to have some fun." Saeko told Alice that having a full team of four wasn't going to really matter at this point but they should try their best to enjoy themselves.
"Well the time to have fun is now, I can hear them breaking in." Saya explaind to Saeko. It turned out Saya was right, the zombies were indeed breaking in. Alice went up to one of the windows and slashed a zombie open with her knife, the zombie went down Saeko and Saya did the same thing as they were slashing the zombies down with one blow. Eventually they finished slashing them as the next round began.
"We need to find the color to this map so I think there might be a big power switch somewhere." Saeko suggested that they should bring the color back as the black and white atmosphere was creeping them out.
"Which way should we go?" Saya asked if there were any ideas of which direction they should take. Alice walked over to where the M14 was and purchased it.
"Ahh it looks like it's you and me my friend." Alice told the M14 as she cocked the rifle.
"For now let's build up points and then we'll decide." Saeko told the group. The zombies began to come in again as the three girls drew their pistoles and began firing, with the starting pistols being weak it was easy to build up points. The three of them began firing away, trying to accumilate as many points as they could, Their pistol ammo quickly ran out as they had to resort to much more effective means. Saeko was knifing the zombies while Alice was picking them off with her M14. If a zombie got too close, she would knife it and therefore bring the zombie down. She reloaded as much as she could to make sure she had a full magazine in there.
"Gah pistol ammo is out. We need to go." Saya called out. She spotted a door right by the lander that costs 750 points. She went over and purchased it. The door opened as Saya went exploring around, trying to find where the power switch was. She went up the stairs and spotted one of the perk machines, a tall one that overlooked the area. She looked out of the rafters as Alice and Saeko were trying to fight the zombies off as best as they could. "They need help." Saya told herself. She went up the second set of stairs to another door that costs 1250 points. She touched it as she realized she was out of cash. Not enough there to open the door. She looked around as she desperately needed a gun. She spotted one right by where she was earlier. She went over and decided to purchase it for a thousand points. "It's not going to do much but it'll hold me over for a little while longer." Saya told herself as she purchased the PM-63. She decided to head back down the stairs to help.
Saya entered the scene as Saeko was running out of ways to deal with the zombies and Alice was just racking up points with the M14. Saya began firing the PM-63 trying to go for headshots. Eventually one of the zombies dropped a hammer as Saeko ran up and picked it up.
"Carpenter!" The voice called out. Almost like magic the barriers came back as this clowed the game down. At least everyone got a couple hudrred extra points. Finally out of the blue the structure in the center of the room began to spin the spinning continued to get faster and faster as the last few zombies were killed as their bodies were flung all over. The round ended as the next round began.
"Round 3 we need to turn the power on." Saeko reminded them that they needed to turn the power on.
"I have made a way there, let's take that." Saya told Saeko that they could go her way and get the power open.
"No don't! I'll explain later when the power is on and we get perks." Alice warned them to not open the door heading up the other stairwell. They nodded as they began to look around.
"What about that door heading out?" Saeko asked as she pointed to the one above the stairs. Saeko and Saya went over, up the stairs and to the door. Saeko had points but she had no decent weapon so she wanted to save up.
"This door?" Saya asked. They heard the moans of zombies that were starting to spawn as they were going to attack next.
"Yes!" Saeko shouted. She went over and purchased the 750 door and this lead them outside. She turned back to Alice who was ready to take the zombies on. "Are you sure you're going to be okay?" Saeko asked Alice.
"I'll be alright, go!" Alice shouted. Alice raised her M14 and began firing away at the zombies. She was desperate to buy Saeko and Saya time to switch the power on.
Saeko was trying her best to knife the zombies while Saya took potshots with the PM-63, a round or two was needed as Saeko finished them off. Saya even went for headshots as it was the fastest way to get points. The two of them rounded the corner as Saeko went up and purchased the Mp5K from the wall.
"Something to hold me over for now until a better weapon is acquired." Saeko told herself as she began firing the sub machine gun at the zombies. She was helping Saya out as Saya purchased the next door. The two of them headed off as they followed the arrows to find the power switch. They found the door that was going to lead them to where Saya originally wanted to go. Saya raised her PM63 and fired at the zombies following them. She reloaded as they headed up the stairs. They were going to find the power switch today. Making their way up the stairs, they eventually got to the top of the stairs where another door was, It was 1250 points. Saeko bought it as this top door contained the Mystery Box. Saya went over to the Mystery Box while Saeko grabbed the power switch and flipped it on.
"Hey the color is back!" Saya shouted as she was happy with this revalation. Saeko nodded as she fired her Mp5K at the zombies. Saya was watching the Mystery Box flash the random guns it had as it was giving Saya the choice of illusion. Eventually the gun landed on the Galil as Saya takes it and traded her empty pistol away. "Well time to make them bow down before me without their kneecaps!" Saya called out. They watched as the rocket was being set up. After a few seconds they had set the rocket set up. "What next Saeko?" Saya asked. Saeko went over to the other door that costs 1250 points and purchased it. She had the most amount of points out of the group though she was starting to run out.
"We keep moving. We need to make sure Alice is still safe and hasn't gone down as of yet." Saeko told Saya that making sure they were able to keep Alice alive was the next priority.
The two of them headed down the stairs to see where they were going to go. Saya was shooting the zombies with the PM-63 as the third round came to a close and the fourth round began. Saya was beginning to run out of PM-63 ammo as she was going to use the rest of that up and hit the box again. Saya went over and purchase the 1250 door that lead up.
"Will Alice be safe?" Saya asked as she was keeping a look out for her friend.
"She hasn't gone down as of yet so she's doing okay but I don't know how well she is doing currently." Saeko told Saya as they past a green colored perk machine and the wallbuy for the M16. They eventually found one of the spots as Saeko spotted something strange and she went up to it. She purchased the Sickle for 3000 points.
"A farming tool to kill the zombies? I wonder how this would turn out?" Saeko asked while she twirled the Sickle around. One of the zombies approached Saeko and she quickly swiped it with the sickle, quickly taking it down. "Sickle does more damage than the knife?" Saeko asked, she was going to hang onto it. Saya went over and pushed the button.
Alice was busy fighting off the zombies but her M14 was becoming less effective, she had racked up a large number of points because of it but she was starting to get swarmed. She had been standing on the Lunar Lander when she felt a shaking and the gates went up.
"Woah woah woah!" Alice told herself as she was taken off balance. She was in for a ride. The Lunar Lander flew off to where it had been called. Alice looked around from her position as two thirds of the map had been opened. Eventually the Lunar Lander made touch down to the area where Saya and Saeko were.
"How are you Alice?" Saeko asked as she wanted to see how Alice was doing.
"Fine but I got a full magazine in the M14 and not much ammo left, I'm starting to run out." Alice told Saeko that she was running dry on ammo. Saeko swiped at the zombie with the Sickle while Alice fired away.
"Okay. Saya take this lander back. I'm going to take Alice to the box." Saeko gave Saya some objectives to take care of the Lander while she got Alice a better gun. "Come on Alice." Saeko told Alice. Alice nodded while she and Saeko went back to the Mystery Box. Saya activated the Lunar Lander which began to take her back to spawn.
Saeko and Alice went to the mystery box as they were going to have Alice replace one of her out of ammo guns. Since Alice and Saeko had made a lot of points, they were going to hit the box and try finding something better. They looked up to see one of the pieces of the rocket flash green.
"A rocket piece is green, what does that mean?" Alice asked as she didn't know what exactly this was going to mean.
"I don't know either. Maybe we should link up more landers." Saeko suggested. She got out the Mp5K and fired away to make more points. Alice went over as she was going to trade her empty pistol out for something to kill zombies. Alice went to the Mystery Box and decided to spend some of her points to find out what she was going to get. She looked in wonder as the guns were spinning around in her head trying to see what she was going to get. Eventually it landed on a gun and Alice took it.
"I still think this is my favorite shotgun." Alice told herself as she had gotten herself the Spas-12 from the box. She went up to a zombie and blasted its face in. The zombie went down instantly but for Alice it wasn't that much of a good pay off. "I need a point maker but I will hang onto this." Alice sighed. Saeko went over to the Mystery Box and tried to get something good from the box. Eventually Saeko got a bunch of wooden nesting dolls as her choice of weaponry.
"I don't know what these dolls will do to save a warrior like me? I think these will please the emperor." Saeko told herself as she had gotten herself the Matryoshka Dolls. Saeko was curious to see what these dolls were going to do but she was going to save them up for a large crowd of zombies thinking they had some kind of grenade in them.
Alice was dumping whatever ammo she had left in her M14 while Saeko went to rejoin her. Saya was busy doing the next Lunar Lander as she was determined to link all of them up. Saya nodded that they were fighting on. Alice used the last ammo she whipped out the Spas-12 and began firing it at the zombies. Saya spent more points on the Lunar Lander as it began to bring her back while Saeko attacked the Zombies with the Sickle.
"I'm going to open the last part of the map, try to find Saya and see what the next strategy is." Alice told Saeko. Saeko nodded before pulling out the Matryoshka doll and opening up. Out popped a doll into the crowd of zombies the doll exploded as those dolls underneath also detonated, wiping out the entire group in one go.
"Oh Cluster bombs." Saeko told herself. Round four has ended and Round five began. Saeko went off to find Saya.
Alice went to the left of spawn and made her way to the back end of the map. She finished reloading her Spas-12 and began to wonder how she was going to need points. She looked around to see if she was going to get another gun from the wall. She spotted something outlined in chalk. She walked up to the chalk and purchased the AK-74U to replace the ammoless M14. A couple of zombies approached her.
"Well I can't say that this is my favorite gun from the wall." Alice told herself as she cocked the AK-74U bolt. The zombies rounded the corner. Alice pointed the SMG at the zombies and fired into their heads, their heads popped off as Alice still had some points left over. Alice went to the door to the last lander and opened it. It was a huge area where rounding up the zombies was possible. She went to the Lunar Lander and called it over. The Lander arrived a couple moments later as Alice fired into the heads of a couple more zombies and did her best to get points. Eventually the Lander arrived as Alice got onto it, ready to take the trip back. She pressed the button as the gates went up and the Lander took off. "I'm going for a ride. WEEE!" Alice cheerfully called out. The Lander would eventually return her to Spawn as Saeko and Saya were busy trying to fight the zombies. When the Lander reached them. Alice pointed the AK-74U and finished off the crowd.
"Where were you Alice?" Saya asked. Saeko looked at the screen.
"Saya don't ask, look!" Saeko told Saya. "Alice activated the last Lander, the entire rocket is green and ready to take off."
"All right let's go get perks first." Saya told the group that getting at least one perk before heading off to activate the Rocket was important. She took off to the tunnel where she purchased the PM-63 and knew what perk they decided to get. They decided to go for the one that was located in the area by the PM-63 and stock up on perks. After getting what they needed. They prepared to head out as Alice and Saya killed the last couple of zombies, this triggered Round six to begin.
"So far so good, I'm going to look out ahead." Alice told Saeko and Saya, They nodded as Alice decided to take a look around but this round six was going to be their first challenge. "Uhh... why is the screen red?" Alice asked. Suddenly She heard something crash down. Alice quickly got out the Spas-12 thinking it was her way of killing the zombies. Then monkeys in spacesuits began to emerge from the pods and start heading straight for Alice. Alice felt like she was going to panic, she quickly fired the Spas-12 off as a warning, killing a monkey. Alice ran back to Saeko and Saya as if she didn't know what to do. Saeko spotted Alice coming fo them in a panic.
"Is there something wrong?" Saeko asked. Alice reloaded her Spas-12 as she wanted to have a full tube.
"Yes, monkeys are coming!" Alice told them. She turned around as the monkeys had made their appearance. Alice got herself ready as Saya had her PM-63 on standby which she had purchased more ammo for and Saeko had her sickle. Alice lined up her sight on a monkey and fired, killing it instantly. A monkey tried to attack Saeko but the latter jabbed it with the Sickle. Alice was blowing the monkeys up with the shotgun as Saya fired into a couple of them with her PM-63, Another monkey attempted to attack Saya but Alice turned and blasted the shotgun into the Monkey's face.
"Stay back!" Saya shouted before firing her PM-63 into another monkey. The monkeys continued to attack as Alice blasted the Spas-12 into more of the monkeys. It was her effective way of dispatching them as Saeko was using her sickle. Finally Saya shot the last monkey as an ammo box and a bottle had dropped. Alice reloaded her guns while Saeko went over and picked both of them up. they now had two perks as the second perk had been randomized for each of them.
"Max ammo!" The announcement had been made looks like they had. All of their guns had been magically refilled. Round seven had begun.
"Let's go turn that rocket on." Saya instructed the group. They began to make their way back to the rocket with Saeko leading the way as she slashed the zombies with the Sickle. Saya was supporting her by dumping out all of her PM-63 rounds into the zombies as possible. Alice was at the rear using the AK-74U to build up points. As they moved around to the rocket where they believed it was. They approached the power room where the Rocket was Located. Saya and Alice went to the mystery box while Saeko was slashing the zombies with her sickle. Saya had used all the ammo in her PM-63 and was ready to dump the gun entirely. She was the first to hit the box to see what she was going to get. When the jingle finished. Saya had become really excited to get the gun she was gifted.
"SAY HELLO TO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIEND! Oh wait... that's just me." Saya told herself excitedly as she had recieved the Thundergun, exchanging her PM-63. Saya went over as a large crowd of zombies as Saeko was being overran. With the click of the trigger, the zzombies were instantly killed. Saeko nodded while she was going to deal with the other side. Saya went up to the rocket and pressed the button. The rocket began to fly up into the sky as as someone had authorized its launch. Alice was had hit the box and was too busy watching the guns to really pay attention to what Saeko and Saya were doing which was watching the rocket fly into the air. Alice finally recieved what she needed from the box.
"Man this looks odd, might as well figure out what it does." Alice told herself as she had gotten the Gersh Device. Alice decided to head down to where the rocket was stationed and where it took off from. Saeko and Saya decided to follow as Alice killed the last three zombies. With their deaths, round eight had begun.
Alice had went down into the launch pad area where the rocket was as those doors had now been open. Alice went inside as if she had opened the final area of the map. There was a machine that was her reward that they had linked the Lunar Landers together. Alice quickly took out the Spas-12 as the zombies were breaking down the barricades.
"Well I don't want to be stuck loading into a game." Alice told herself as she placed the Spas-12 into the Pacck a Punch Machine. She had ground up enough points to be able to achieve a feat like this. Saya and Saeko had arrived as Alice was upgrading one of her guns.
"Alice what are you doing?!" Saya asked with concern. The zombies began to pour through the barricades while Pack a Punch Machine gave the gun back to Alice.
"Hey guys this is nice and shiny now!" Alice shouted as she held her Spaz-24 shotgun. She pointed it at a group of zombies, she fired it. It was a hybrid of an automatic rifle and a shotgun as it was blasting the zombies heads off. Best part of it was the fact that should reload it all in one go instead of reloading it individually. A large group of zombies made their way into the room as Saeko was curious about what this Pack a Punch machine could do. She got out her colt and placed it into the Pack a Punch Machine. Alice and Saya thought they weren't going to hold them off this time so Alice got out one of her Gersh Devices and activated it, she threw it at the feet of the zombies as they ran over it suddenly a purple sphere had been opened as the zombies were quickly being sucked into the Gersh Device. Alice being curious tried to figure out where this machine was going to take her. She ran over and dove into the Gersh Device.
"Alice no!" Saya shouted. It was too late Alice had disappeared as Saeko grabbed what seemed to be her starting pistol from the Pack a Punch Machine.
"Is it strange that the starting room pistol is turned into a dual wield grenade launcher?" Saeko asked as Saya was panicking. Saeko looked around while getting out her Mp5K and firing it at the zombies. "Has anyone seen Alice?" Saeko asked.
Alice eventually popped out as the Gersh Device was a black hole for the zombies but for Alice she must've survived this. Alice looked around as she spotted a perk machine and the AK-74U wall buy she had purchased earlier.
"I survived the portal trip I don't think I want to be doing that again." Alice told herself. Then round eight had ended and turned into round nine. The Zombies began to swarm around her as Alice got out the AK-74U and began firing it off as she needed the points. She was going to attempt to empty out the magazine if she was going to be able to change it for another gun. She reloaded as if she was firing it all off rapidly. Alice would eventurally dump out all the AK-74U ammo as she decided to get out the Spaz-24 and begin blasting her way through the crowd. The Spaz-24 was effective at its job maybe a little too effective. Alice was happily blasting away as whatever this pack a punch machine had done had made this shotgun beefy so strong that when Alice needed to reload, she had taken out everything around her. Alice went over to the Lunar Lander and tried to call it over. Eventually it came over and Alice got onto it. Then the Lander took off but Alice didn't push any buttons. The lander few up into the sky as she wasn't being taken back to spawn but rather to Lander site B where the Sickle was. When Alice landed. Saeko and Saya were waiting as Alice was relatively unharmed.
"Well what happened, we were so scared to have you not with us." Saya told Alice that she was more or less frightened to see where their friend went off to.
"I was teleported across the map when I went into that device. The zombies were sucked in which I was more than happy to find out." Alice replied about her experience. She went over and purchased the Sickle, Saya killed the last zombie as round nine ended and round ten began.
"Cool so we can all be teleported?" Saya asked. Saeko was in the mood to go to the mystery box to exchange the empty Mp5K she had. Alice definitely wanted to see the box again. Alice was also out of AK-74U ammo and she needed a good point maker to help balance her Spaz-24. She got out the shotgun and she began to blast her way through to the mystery box. The others were behind as Saeko was blowing up everything with his pistols from the rear. Saeko even got out onf of the Matryoshka dolls and tossed it at the horde, the cluster grenades exploded as the entire group was taken down. Alice and Saya were keeping their guard as Saeko decided to hit the box. The guns were flashing all over before Saeko was given a gun.
"I don't know if a medieval weapon would be useful for someone like me?" Saeko asked as she took the crossbow. She aimed at the zombies anf fired before reloading, moments later the crossbow bolt detonated and took out some of the zombies. "Explosive huh?" Saeko asked. Alice went to the box to trade out the empty AK-74U she had. She hits the box while the others were trying to take out the zombies. For Saeko she watched as it landed on something she wanted.
"This box loves me!" Alice told herself as she recieved a Spectre from the box. She decided to join the fray and began to spray the Spectre into the zombie crowd as they were trying their best to get points and to clear out the crowd. Eventurally Alice threw down a Gersh device and it sucked the zombies in. "Come on." Alice called out. She Saeko and Saya raced into the Gersh Device and were swallowed up along with the zombies.
Eventurally the three of them would land in the spawn room where they were once again fine.
"Wow I never knew something like this could be exciting, it's like going through a teleporter." Saya began. They got up to dust themselves off. the three of them didn't realize was the fact that they had killed the last zombie and the round was over. Round eleven was about to begin.
"We survived the first ten rounds, now what?" Saya asked. The rest of the game was up to their choices.
Going to leave this off as this took a while to type as it was just them setting up and getting the Pack a Punch door to open as well as dealing with the mechanics of Ascension. Next two parts wouldn't be as long as I will be skipping rounds as it would be just them killing zombies and monkeys. It will get repetivive if I go through round for round but I will be describing major actions like getting guns and upgrading them. Also do not get the PM-63, it's a waste of points as you constantly need ammo for it. Also there is a door on Ascension that you should not open its the 1250 door where the PM-63 is and the reason the door should remain closed is when the monkeys spawn in they will take all the routes to steal your perks by keeping that door closed you're only giving the monkeys one route to steal your perks and you can defend two perks instead of one. Rounds 11-20 will be the next part. submitted by

2023.06.02 23:19 orchidpetaldesign Don't call me Cinderella (p3)
Jesi had never been in a hotel before certainly not one as fine as the one Mr Ericson took her and Damion too. They had a suite all to themselves it had two bedrooms connected to a living room, and kitchen. The hotel room was larger then the apparent she used to share with her mama all those years ago. Damion shared a room with Mr. Ericson but for the first time in her life Jesi had a room all to herself. She thought it would feel secure, but she still slept with a knife under her pillow. Still the bed was so soft she felt like it was going to swallow her alive every night. Her nights were one thing but the days were another thing entirely, they were a whirlwind activity. First there was the image coach, a person that Mr. Ericson hired to find a way to make sure Damion and Jesi, both looked nicer then street kids but were still comfortable. Then there was the mountain of paper work and explanations of how her life would change once she signed the papers. Mr. Ecrison said that the press had heard there was an heir to the OâConnal empire but they didnât have her name or face yet. He was hoping that meant they would have a quite arrival when their plane landed in upstate New York.
He realized he was wrong the moment they entered the airport. Mr. Ericson was shocked to see the number of reporters swarming the gate. He cursed under his breath heâd been so careful heâd even gone out of his way to ask OâConnalâs business partner Constance Karington if they could borrow her familyâs private jet to fly the girl in under the radar. With a sigh he squared his shoulders and looked at the two young adults behind him. âYou both need to stay quite they will snap photos, shout questions, and shove whatever kind of recording devices they have practically down your throats for a sound bite. Do not give them one.â Mr. Ericson commanded as he lead them toward the crowd. Airport security was already attempting to hold the crowd back. The instant the crowd caught sight of Jesi flashes began to blind them all while the questions started flying
âMiss Jahari is it true you never knew your father?â
âMiss Jahari are you going to sell the company?â
âMiss, Jahari how does it feel to be Cinderella?â
Jesi was proud of herself for not pulling her knife on any of the reporters at the airport. She didnât like people in general and she certainly wasnât used to crowds surrounding and recording her. Mr Ericson parted the crowd as best he could and then shoved both Jesi and Damion into a waiting black sedan, with a driver. A short ride later and the small black sedan pulled up to a set of iron gates in the center of a brick wall that surrounded a mansion as big as a castle. The street in front of the wall however was filled bumper to bumper with cars parked on the curb. As the black sedan they were in pulled up to the gates people mobbed the car banging on the windows shouting questions making it hard for the car to move. Mr. Ericson pushed a button on his phone and the gates swung inward admitting the car the driver moved forward slowly through the throng as the gates swung shut behind them. The car pulled up to the front of the house and an older matronly type woman, came rushing out, as Mr. Ericson opened Jesiâs door.
âAh, let me look at you!â the woman cried out in a thick Irish accent as she looked at Jesi.
âJesminda Jahari this is your fatherâs maid and cook Mrs. Mable Mcguil, she has served your fatherâs family since before I can remember.â
âAye, your mother must have been a beauty. Why just look at ya! You did get yer Fatherâs hair though I see, and his eyes.â Mable said as she reached out to brush a strand of red hair from Jesiâs face
âYou knew my father?â Jesi asked
âKnew him? Why I helped his mother raise âim I did. Kindest boy youâd ever want to meet. Ack, but he did he ever have a stubborn streak.â Mable added with a laugh
âMable, my dear, I know you want to get to know Miss Jahari but thatâs better left inside I think as the wolves are snapping pictures at the gate.â
âAck, of course where are my manners, get in here all of ye.â Mable said as she turned to lead the way into the house. Mr. Ericson handed Damion and Jesi the 2 small carry on bags worth of clothes theyâd purchased a few days ago, and motioned the two of them to follow Mable inside while he took his own bag from the trunk.
Jesi stepped wide eyed into the large foyer, the floors were a black and gold marble. The walls were a pristine white, with a stair case on either side curving up to the open second floor but what drew Jesiâs eye was a large painting hanging on the wall between the stair cases. A small family of three with a rather severe looking man with blonde hair standing tall a woman beside him with red hair gave anyone who entered a warm welcoming smile. The boy in the front drew jesi in he was around 7 at the time of the painting. Red hair green eyes but the happy smile he gave didnât quite make it to his eyes. Jesi walked toward the painting staring at the child.
âThatâs your father.â Mabel said walking up beside Jesi. âI remember that day clear as a bell yer grandfather insisted on a family portrait sitting. Ah, but yer father little scamp that he was was having none of it. All he wanted was to go out and play in the yard. The artist finally got yer grandfather to agree to take a photo to make the painting off of. As soon as he was free Conner went out and rolled through the grass in that fancy suit you see âim wearing. Aye but yer Grandfather was in a snit for days over the grass stains.â
âThis house is massive.â Jesi said looking around the foyer.â
âAh, but we do agree on that. To the left Youâll find the kitchen, dinning room, ballroom, bathroom, den, and living room. Through the right door youâll find the home theater, another bathroom, library, office, gym and indoor pool. Upstairs there are nine bedrooms each with their own on suite bathroom, And the master bedroom has exclusive access to itâs own balcony. The third floor contains the greenhouse conservatory and excellent views.â
âSo many rooms for only three people.â Jesi marveled turning a slow circle around the foyer.
âYes, that was yer Grandfather for ye. The man insisted on showing the world how successful he was by getting the best of everything privet jet, fancy yacht, all the cars, the house. Yer father was a much simpler type He would have been happy with a one room apparent in the city. Thatâs why he never replaced the privet jet after the crash. He didnât see a need, said if he was gonna fly it could be commercially, with real people.â
Jesi stood staring at the painting tears burned the back of her throat, as waves of emotion beat at her. Her father sounded like such a good man she wished she could have known him, but right on the heels of that she was so angry, her father lived in such excess while she and her mother had scraped by on nothing. Yet according to Ericson her father had never known that she existed her grandfather had lied to her father to her mother. Jesi choked back the tears and clung to the only emotion that had kept her alive for so long. Anger. âI hate them.â she ground between clenched teeth.
Mabelâs face fell she seemed to be hoping for a more joyful reaction from Jesi, but to her credit she didnât try to talk the girl out of her pain either. Damion walked over and placed an arm around Jesiâs shoulders. âMrs. Mcguil, is there a room we can go to for rest and a little privacy?â Damion asked
As soon as the door to the large guest bedroom drifted shut behind them Jesminda let her real feelings be known. She broke into deep sobs and fell into Damionâs arms.
âI donât- I canât- How could he- How could they-â Jesi started so many sentences but the jumble of emotion stampeding through her.
âEasy Jes, take a breath.â Damion tried as he held her.
âWhy am I morning a man I never met? A man who abandoned me?â Jesi started
âBecause he didnât abandon you not on purpose Jes.â
âI want to hate him. I need to hate him, Why canât I hate him?â Jesi sobbed
âYour right Jes itâs not fair. None of this is fair. Itâs a lot to take in, and neither of us have taken the time to really process this.â
âIn the hotel he didnât seem real, but now⌠He was my father, and I never knew his name.â
âI know, Jes, itâs not fair.â
âHe was stolen from me!â
âYes he was.â
âThis whole life was stolen from me!â Jesi hiccuped
Damion just held her and let her cry. There was so much for them both to process. Jesi was now one of the richest women in the nation, and she had insisted that Damion share her home as the brother heâd been to her since the day theyâd met.
Jesi spent the rest of the day in the guest room that was now her bedroom with Damion bouncing between sorrow and anger like a rubber ball. Eventually she cried herself to sleep. Damion had just eased her into the plush bed, when a soft knock sounded on the door.
âHey, uumm.â Damion stammered he wished he could remember the maidâs name.
âMabel deary. How is she?â Mabel asked as she tried to look past Daion towards Jesi.
âSheâs sleeping.â Damion said protectivily blocking to door.
âI mean her no harm.â Mabel said gently
Damion winced and tried to force himself to relax âSorry, I know you donât itâs justâŚâ He trailed off at a loss âIâve protectd her since she was five. Its just really hard to let that go.â
âYe love her then?â Mable asked
âOf course.â Damion stopped and then a thought occurred to him âOh! Oh you mean! No, no weâre not like that. Sheâs basically the sister I -â he stopped.
âYer sister?â
âThe crash that took my parents. It also killed my five year old sister Amy. Three days later I met Jesi, she looks nothing like Amy, but she was the same age and well I guess I wanted to protect her the way I couldnât protect my family.â
âAck, ye poor dear.â Mabel said with tears pooling in her eyes. âSheâs safe here though, not a sole can get past the walls without setting off the alarms.â
Damion stiffened âJesi, doesnât like loud noises. Not since her mother was shot.â
âShe was there?â Mable asked
âI thought Mr. Ericson would have told you?â Damion asked in confusion
âNo, he told me who she was and that her mother had been killed but nothing else.â
âYeah, she was there, her mom had to take her to work that night and, she says all she remembers is her mom stuffing her in a cabinet then she heard someone yell for the manager then the shots.â
âMy God! Did she see anything?â
âNo the officer on the scene worked really hard to make sure she didnât see anything, But sheâs been really jumpy ever since.â
âAck, the poor dear. Well it seems thereâs nothing more You and I can do for her til she wakes come Iâll show ye to yer room you must be tired as well.â
âI-I canât leave her Iâll just stay here with her.â
âSheâs safe here. Your safe here. You need rest too.â
âAnd Iâll get it right here beside her.â
âYeâve taken care of her for thirteen years, Yeâve earned a rest and so has she.â
âWe rest better together.â
âIâm sure ye do, and youâll be ale to hear her through the wall if thereâs trouble.â Mable encouraged
âI-â
âYer both safe. Sheâll be fine.â
Damion reluctantly followed Mable from the room. Mable made a show of taking a key from her pocket and locking the door to the room she explained that she was the only one with a key to unlock the bedroom doors but that all door could be locked or unlocked from the inside.
The next morning Mable opened Jesmindaâs door with a cart of food behind her. âGood moring Miss Jes-â Mable froze as Jesi lept from the bed a knife brandished in her hand itâs tip nearly rested on Mabelâs neck
âSorry,â Jesi said as she lowered the knife. âForce of habit.â
âWell, I will say thatâs a new way to get the blood runnin in the mornin.â Mabel said with a giggle âIs there a reason ye have a knife on ye?â
âIâve slept with a knife since I was sixteen.â
âAnd ye havenât cut yerself?â Mable tried to joke
âNo, Sargent Mullens trained me and Damion how to defend ourselves.â
âSargent Mullens?â Mable asked
âHe was staying at the first homeless shelter we crashed at after leaving the home. I was young inexperienced in street life and so excited to have my first shower in weeks I wasnât careful enough. After I walked into the ladies room a man grabbed me from behind. He clamped his hand over my mouth and put a knife to my throat. I tried to scream to struggle while he cut my clothes off. Sargent Mullens heard the struggle and rushed in. He pulled the man off before anything happened and called for help. The man tried to cut Mullens but he dodged the blade, disarmed him, and held him until the folks that ran the shelter arrived. He told them to bring the guy to the police for sexual assault. After he helped me and Damion disappear when the police showed up and then taught us how to survive on the streets we stayed with him for about 4 months, until he disappeared.â
âThat must have been hard on ye both.â Mable said
âItâs life on the street.â
âJesi!â Damion called out as he rushed into the room.
âAh and that saves me the trouble of bringing breakfast to ye as well.â Mable said as she motioned to the cart behind her. âI didnât know yer preferences, so I, well, I made yer Fatherâs favorites. Bacon, sausage, pancakes, as well as some fruit a selection of juices and, aspirin.â
âHow did you know I have a headache?â Jesi asked
âIâve spent more then a night or two crying meself te sleep. I know the headache ye wake with in the morin all to well. OOP!â Mable said as she pulled her phone from her pocket. âAnd it seems that Ericson has arrived for the day with company not far behind. Best ye eat up and prepare seems as though yer in for yoru first dose of Constance.â
âHeellloo, Constance Karington,â The tall blonde woman in her early twenties stepped up to Jesi and offered her hand âYour sister.â
âI have a sister?â Jesi asked
âNo, you do not.â Ericson answered.
âOh not a biological sister but Conner was like a second father to me.â Constance said
âThat makes one of us.â Jesi griped under her breath
âOh look at you arenât you a vision well besides that scare on your neck but donât you worry my step-mom knows a great plastic surgeon weâll have that gone in days.â
Jesi rested a self conscious hand over the knife scare on her collar bone.
âI wish you had consulted with me Ms. Karington, Miss Jahriâs schedule is full today.â
âOh, so I cleared my entire morning of running my very successful company to hang out with my new sister for nothingâ Constance protested actually pouting at Ericson.
âI believe youâll find the company belongs to both of you Ms. Karington, and as I Said if youâd checked with me I could have told you that Miss Jahariâs scheduled is full this morning.â
âOh come on Iâm sure you donât need a stuffy old man telling you what to do Jesi. You donât mind if I call you Jesi do you?â Constanceâs words dripped with sugar.
âActually I do mind.â Jesi wasnât buying Constanceâs act for a second. âAnd Ercison has a full day planned.â
âWell, what am I supposed to do with an open morning Ericson?â Constance tried again
âSince your so keen to have family time I suggest you go connect with your brother.â Ericson suggested
âI suppose I could find Skyler but I look forward to dinner tonight Jesminda.â Constance commanded
âI will contact your office and arrange for a dinner in a few weeks then.â Ericson offered.
âI look forward to it.â Constance said with a smile as she turned to go.
âOh Ms. Karington I would like to know how our confidential flight itinerary was leaked to the press.â Ericson asked
âOh right, I have talked to my pilot about that rest assured heâll be disciplined for his loose lips. Ta.â Constance tossed over her shoulder as she left.
âWho was that?â Damion asked when the door closed behind Constance
âConstance Karington, she is the co CEO of OâConnal and Karington Enterprises.â
âIsnât she kinda young to be a CEO?â Jesi asked
âShe was a child prodigy she graduated high school early and earned her MBA by the time she was 20. Two years ago she convinced her father to entire and hand over his half of the company to her.â
Constance slammed the front door to her familyâs home. And let out a frustrated scream.
âI take it your plan to get Cinderella to sign the papers was a bust?â her brother Skyler appeared at the top of the stairs.
âI thought youâd still be sleeping.â Constance griped
âI was until you slammed the door quite rude if Iâm honest sister dear.â Skyler, said with a lazy drawl
âWell, tell whoever your current girlfriend is Iâm sorry to have disturbed her.â Constance replied with a forced smile
âYou can drop the loving sister routine Constance Iâm alone today.â
âFor once.â Constance laughed sarcastically. âWhat do Nora find you flirting with a waitress?â
âHer name was Ashley and no, she asked for commitment, and you know I donât do commitment.â
âHm. Yet another doe eyed debutante that thought she could marry New Yorkâs most eligible bachelor?â
âYes youâd think theyâd know better by now donât they all talk?â
âBrother this may surprise you but the world does not actually revolve around you.â
âAnd it doesnât serve you sister dear. A fact it seems âCinderellaâ reminded you of today.â Skyer gloated
âThat company is mine! Conner promised it to me! Then that worthless brainless rat shows up and takes everything from me!â Constance shouted.
âIâm not sure Cinderella showed up isnât more like Connor hunted her down?â
âCinderella?â Constance said as a calculating smile slid on to her face
âThat look never bodes well.â Skyler observed
âWell, every Cinderella needs her Prince Charming doesnât she.â
âAs I understand it she came with hers did she not?â
âThe street rat no heâs more a brother to her as I understand it, but you Brother dear are currently between lovers at the moment.â
âHa! Donât even try it. Your little Cinderella is no where near my type.â
âOh please, sheâs beautiful, rich, and a woman thatâs exactly your type.â
âHardly, once a street rat always a street rat!â Skyler objected
âI donât care, you will romance her get her so infatuated with you that when you tell her itâs in her best interst to sign over the company sheâll comply.â
âAnd if it canât.â
âThen youâll keep it in your pants until you marry her! I will not let some brat swoop in and steal everything I worked my entire life to get!â
âYou canât make me do any of this.â
âCanât I? Last I checked Brother dear I control your trust fund.â

2023.06.02 22:26 Valkine An Attempt at a Review of Here I Stand by Ed Beach and GMT Games
This review, including photos from my games, originally appeared on my blog at:
https://www.stuartellisgorman.com/blog/review-here-i-stand-by-ed-beach
I first played Here I Stand five years ago at a time when I was far less familiar with wargames. In fact I had recently purged my small game collection of every wargame I owned but Here I Stand because I had given up on finding time and people to play them with. Despite this, in 2018 I made the effort of gathering six of my friends and spending the entire day playing Here I Stand. It was amazing. It took us over eight hours. In the end I emerged victorious as the French, securing an instant victory moments before the Ottomans won on VPs earned mostly through piracy. I spent the next 24 hours buzzing with excitement and exhaustion after that phenomenal day of gaming. I had to get it back to the table, I needed that experience again. Finally, a child, a pandemic, and five years later I managed to play it again and let me tell you, it was just as good the second time!
I finally managed to play Here I Stand again thanks to Chimera Con - a single day board game convention in Dublin dedicated to long multiplayer games. Unsurprisingly, Here I Stand is a perennial favourite and this year there were two tables of it running at the con. Instead of playing the full scenario which starts in 1517 and lasts for hours and hours, we were playing the tournament scenario which begins in 1532 and lasts for three game turns; turns four through six of the main scenario. I also wanted to change up my experience by playing one of the religious factions, since France had been pretty much pure military, and so I was assigned the Protestants. We played for the much more manageable time of just under five hours - still a long game, but short enough that many of us managed to play other games in the afternoon. Once again, after finishing the game I was buzzing with excitement and exhaustion for at least 24 hours. I may have only played two games of Here I Stand, but Iâve spent thirteen hours of my life playing those games and many more obsessing over it. I cannot imagine that my opinions will change substantially no matter how many more times I play it, and I have some thoughts I need to put down on (digital) paper.
SOME NECESSARY BACKGROUND
Here I Stand is a six-player card driven wargame about European conflict between the years 1517 and 1555. Each player controls one of six major powers: England, France, the Hapsburgs, the Ottoman Empire, the Papacy, or the Protestant Reformation. As befits a game with this many players covering such a wide topic, Here I stand is a game of substantial complexity. However, that complexity can be a little misleading. While the game as a whole is full of many different systems for modelling a range of potential actions, no player will interact with every one of these in a single game. The only person who really needs to know how every aspect of Here I Stand works is whoever has the onerous job of teaching the game to the rest of the table.
As an example, I was the Protestants in my most recent game. As the Protestants I had no access to ships, and thus I never needed to know how the several pages of naval rules worked. In contrast, my neighbour (both geographically in the game and at the table we were playing on), the Ottomans, needed to know the naval rules intimately but had no need to learn the rules for religious conflict, which made up most of my actions. Now, it is strategically beneficial to understand how each faction works so you can keep track of how they might be scoring points over the course of the game, but it is not necessary and that is a key distinction. You can play Here I Stand by only know about two-thirds of the rules, and thatâs not nothing!
This asymmetry helps to keep the game manageable and is core to how it crafts an interesting experience. On their turn each player plays one card from their hand, either for the event or, more usually, for action points they can use during their turn. Each faction has a menu of actions they can spend points on but what options are available to an individual faction and, occasionally, the cost of those actions varies. This isnât really where the gameâs asymmetry comes in, though. These actions are the tools you use to play the game, but in most cases the game has just limited your actions to only those most relevant to your goals. To reuse a previous example, as the Protestant player I couldnât build ships, but I also had no real motivation to want to do so, so removing this option was no great hindrance to me. How you win the game is where things get interesting.
The boring answer is that you generally win by getting victory points. However, how you get victory points can vary substantially between factions. All factions have some way to get VPs through controlling points on the board, but while most factions share a goal of fighting over key cities this is not universal. Beyond that, each faction generally has a way to earn their own VPs either through religious influence, building chateaus and cathedrals, having children, or piracy. Probably the most interesting element to Here I Standâs victory conditions is how VP accumulation feels at the same time very slow and, occasionally, terrifyingly fast. This is a game where each VP can feel like a hard fought achievement but then at the same time in turn of my most recent game (a turn being approximately 5-7 card plays for each faction) the English player picked up like eight victory points, going from last to tied for first.
I could espouse at length about how this happens via the chaotic nature of conquest in Here I Stand and the occasional opportunities to seize a fistful of VPs that may come along only once per game, simultaneously lurching you ahead and putting a target on you, but I think describing the nitty gritty would be a disservice. What matters more is the excitement of it! Laying careful plans to slowly pull yourself ahead a few VPs at a time is great, particularly as you know that with the slow shifts in VP that the game allows it can be very hard to claw a leading player back down once you start pushing ahead. At the same time, if you are sitting near the back of the pack watching someone creep ahead you could potentially feel dispirited because youâre stuck behind, but all is not lost! Everyoneâs focus being on the leading player could give you an opportunity to jump ahead by attacking a vulnerable point that someone forgot about! Here I Stand is not like the ever-popular multiplayer wargame COIN series in this regard. In my experience, a COIN game generally features players jockeying for the lead and then, as soon as someone gets too far ahead, everyone turning on them and pummeling them into submission. The goal in COIN is usually to be within striking distance of winning, but not actually winning, so that you can jump across that finish line at just the right moment.
Here I Stand absolutely has an element of players trying to keep an eye on who is in the lead and finding ways to pull them back, but it gives players nowhere near as many tools to do that with. For one thing, you canât just attack players whenever you want â you have to have declared war on them at the start of that turn or have one of the very few cards in the game that let you declare war during a turn. If one player is creeping ahead it often falls to one or two of the other players to keep them in check, leaving the other three to plot how best to use this opportunity to secure their own fortunes. This means that more often than one player being dragged down a huge number of VPs, efforts will be put in place to curtail their advancement only for a new threat to emerge suddenly and distract the table anew. This dynamic is made possible thanks to the number of players and the limitations imposed, both mechanically and geographically, on each of those players. In both of my games one player managed to reach their victory threshold, and thus drew the ire of the table, only for a new threat to emerge in the final turn â in one case the new threat came out victorious while in the other it came up just short but both times it created a thrilling final act for the game!
Take for example my recent game. I was pulling ahead as the Protestant player and that meant that the Papacy and the Hapsburg player had to try and curtail my advancement. The papacy could try to reduce the reach of my religious conversions while the Hapsburgs could take electorates from me, netting them VPs and denying me ones. However, in doing this all attention turned away from England who chose then to launch a major invasion of France (who had left several cities largely undefended to pursue conquests in Italy), which saw them acquire VPs in spades while no one could stop them because they were only at war with France who was stuck in Italy!
A NOTE ON GAME SIZE
Here I Stand has a deserved reputation of being a game of enormous scale. This is both deserved and undeserved and I hope to explain why. Firstly, yes, Here I Stand requires six players. Do not be deceived by the box claiming it can be played at between two and six. This is a game destined to be a six-player experience and that is how I would recommend playing it.
As to its length, however, I have some thoughts. The full scenario is a day long experience, have no doubt about that. It lasts nine turns, and each turn will take you at least an hour to resolve, possibly quite a bit more. Even though there is a decent chance that your game wonât last all the way until turn nine, usually someone wins before then, it will still take many hours. It also wonât stop you from needing to put aside a full day to play the game, because even if you finish on turn seven you need to allow for the possibility of the full nine.
However, let me point you in the direction of the tournament scenario as an interesting alternative. In the tournament scenario you start the game in 1532, on turn four, and you play for three turns of the game. For my most recent game using this scenario we played for about five hours to resolve these three crucial turns during what would be the main scenarioâs mid-game. I had worried that it would feel like a truncated experience, but honestly, I felt like it gave me most of what I love about Here I Stand in a much more manageable amount of time. I was really impressed, and I would recommend that people give it a shot â whether you are someone who wants to try this game but is struggling to find the time or if youâre a veteran who is always looking to play it more. It makes very few changes to the core game â players start with a few more cards on the first turn and on the final turn a key event is placed in the English playerâs starting hand rather than shuffled into the deck â and gives you so much of that Here I Stand goodness in a half day experience.
That said, I wonât stop wanting to play the full scenario just because the tournament one is so good. There are a few elements that are missing from the tournament scenario and that will mean that I want to play both. In the early game, I missed the more antagonistic relationship between France and the Papacy of the 1517 start that isnât present in 1532 â namely that the two are at war and France has invaded Italy. The tournament scenario also gives very few opportunities for dynastic change among the players which is an element of the game I really like. You will definitely see a new pope â in our game it happened immediately â and could potentially see a new English monarch or Protestant leader but neither is very likely. These rules donât necessarily create a radical shift in the game, but if youâre into Here I Stand for the historical narrative (and why else would you be playing it?) then you will be missing out on some of that grand scope the game provides by including dynastic change among its mechanics.
WHAT DOESNâT QUITE WORK
Okay, so I adore this game to the point of obsession, but I am not going to sit here and tell you that it is flawless. This has not stopped me from loving the game, but I must confess that the religious conflict mechanics are a little bitâŚeh. For context, there are two main ways that the Catholic and Protestant players can convert regions of the board to either of their religious beliefs. They can take actions that let them try and convert specific points on the board or they can engage in religious debates.
Letâs talk first about converting spaces. Converting a space is a contested roll between the Catholic and Protestant player. Whoever is attempting the conversion selects a space and then both players calculate their dice pool based on a variety of factors such as adjacent spaces, presence of troops who support that religion, adjacency of key religious figures, any card effects that are in play this round, etc. Once each player has a total number of dice, they roll looking for the highest single die. Highest result, with whoever wins ties changing over the game, succeeds and the space is either converted or remains the same. I really like this mechanic and itâs a lot of funâŚif youâre one of the players involved. Only two players take this action, and the Protestant player will take it far more, sometimes resolving six or more attempts in one turn while everyone else sits around and waits. Itâs very time consuming and can cause the game to drag, particularly if youâre not invested in the result. As the Protestant player in my most recent game I had a blast doing this, but I could see the rest of the table groan whenever I had a big turn coming where I was going to try and convert a lot of spaces. Itâs a cool mechanic but eliciting this response in a six-player game is not ideal.
The debate rules I like quite a bit less. The Protestant and Catholic player can call debates between their two sides, and these can be used to convert large swaths of territory all in one go and potentially secure victory points by burning or denouncing the opposing debater. The debates themselves work a bit like combat, players get pools of dice and try to score âhitsâ by rolling fives and sixes on them, but with more steps used to determine who the two debaters will be rather than just knowing who the two armies are because theyâre on the board. This mechanism is clearly central to the vision of the gameâs design â the Protestant playerâs home card (a card that is always available to them every turn) includes specific abilities for using Martin Luther in debates. That said, they have not played a very significant role in either of my games. The rules are complicated and thereâs a non-zero chance that after all the steps involved in determining debaters and dice pools and such you will end up with a draw or a very minimal result. The promise of burning heretics at the stake lying sadly out of reach. The two religious factions also have a huge pool of potential debaters, many of whom have useful abilities for other parts of the game, and they can be overwhelming to keep track of. I canât help but think the potential for them to die has bolstered their number creating the vast surplus of counters for the two players to track. Maybe as I play Here I Stand more I will find a new appreciation for the debate rules, but in a game that is so hard to get to the table it just doesnât feel like the debate rules totally work. Theyâre not fundamentally broken or anything, but they feel off and, again, they also take up quite a bit of time and often only interest two of the players at a table of six.
These religion rules are something that was apparently significantly streamlined in Virgin Queen (the sequel to Here I Stand) and I am desperate to play it and see for myself. Tragically, Virgin Queen was already out of print back when I first played Here I Stand half a decade ago and there is still no clear timeline on a new edition going forward. Maybe some day I will decide to go mad and drop a stack of cash on one of the few copies available on the second-hand market, but until then I live in hope that GMT will finally reprint it.
TO CONCLUDE
Letâs be honest, Here I Stand is obviously not a game for everyone. Itâs huge, itâs long, it has forty pages of rules, over a hundred cards, and donât get me started on the many little counters with their own special rules you have to juggle. Itâs nowhere near the most complicated game out there, itâs honestly middle of the road as far as card drive games go, but it is still a lot to take on board even before you start factoring in that a short game takes four to five hours. That all having been said, I feel confident saying that Here I Stand is one of my favourite games of all time. Nothing else I have played gives me the same feeling of excitement as it does. After each game I spend the next 24-36 hours buzzing with excitement at what I just experienced. It sucks you in to its historical sandbox and gives you the freedom to pull some levers while also helping to guide you into understanding even some of what was happening during a particularly chaotic period in European history. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But I love it, nonetheless.
If after reading this entire review you think that Here I Stand sounds like a dreadful way to spend an afternoon or day, then please do not waste that time with it. Do not let my love for this game convince you to try it if you donât think you would enjoy it. However, if after reading all of this you think that Here I Stand sounds fascinating, then you must play it. Nothing else will give you this experience, you must seek it out. Either way, trust your gut and what it tells you about Here I Stand. Mine tells me itâs hungry for more.

2023.06.02 19:13 ConcentrateKings Please inspire me
Hello 80fam, I am about to embark on my first build(s) - I have never done one, but I have 5 frames and Iâm kind of bored this weekend as our beach plans are cancelled due to rain. I have a few spare parts from old Glock upgrades to my 19c, 43, 26, and another regular 19. I already ordered a few lpk and one NineX19 vapor slide for my odg 19. Iâm having problems deciding what direction I want to go in with my tan and odg 43 frames, as well as my odg 26 frame.. so, I come here, to you, the skilled and distinguished, the knowledgeable and well informed, p80 builders of our time. Please, if you have built a 26, 19, 43, or even a 20, please post photos of the finished product so I can be inspired and hopefully figure out which path I want to take with these builds. Also, Iâm curious, when you built your first, what was the hardest/most challenging part? Is there anything I should know going into this that maybe you wished you knew prior to starting your first build? Thanks in advance -

2023.06.02 18:08 redbluebooks [Warrior Cats RP] The Spirit Animal Club, or: I Want to Get Off Jason the Evil Polar Bearâs Wild Ride
Whatâs the result when a bunch of teenagers
make shit up for their creative writing exercises all meditate and have dreams about spirit animal guides, and post on a talking cat roleplay forum about it?
An evil polar bear that tries to kill you.
This is the third write-up Iâve made about Virtual Warrior World, a Proboards roleplay forum based on the Warrior Cats book series by Erin Hunter, which Iâve already covered in these two
previous posts. Some forum members I mentioned in the first post also show up here, as youâll see later. (You donât have to read any of the other posts to get whatâs going on here, but the first gives more in-depth context.)
Spirit Animals A spirit animal, also known as a totem, is a sacred guide that can take the form of an animal and is seen as a protector. Spirit animals are important in many cultures, including certain Native American ones (such as the Ojibwe). They also tend to be appropriated by neopagans, New Age hippies, and white American teenagers.
Obligatory disclaimer time: I donât know anything about spirit animals other than whatâs written about them on Wikipedia. This writeup is NOT intended to mock anyoneâs spiritual or religious beliefs, nor make a claim that such cultural beliefs around spirit animals are inherently âfakeâ or âimaginaryâ. Itâs important to note that nobody in this club (as far as I know) was Native American or indigenous, nobody performed religious rites or even acknowledged such aspects, and several members years after the fact admitted that they had been making the whole thing up and never saw any spirit guides, animal or otherwise. This writeup is all in the spirit (no pun intended) of fun, and is not in any way supposed to be commentary on real religions or cultures.
Now thatâs out of the way, letâs talk about the club itself.
The Spirit Animal Club On VWW, there was a section dedicated to clubs that members could make about their interests. The site admin, Jai, made a fair few clubs of her own and created sub-boards for them (one of them was a fan club for The Lonely Island, whom you might know as the masterminds behind such iconic hits as âJizz in My Pantsâ and âIâm On a Boatâ); if your club got popular enough, she would make a board for it too. So there were clubs dedicated to the usual subjects: debate, writing, gaming, anime, the LGBTQ+ community, etc.
One particularly notable club was the spirit animal club, which a (white) member named Abby (whose character was Skyflight) came up with and Jai made a board for. The clubâs actual name was âAnimal Spirit Guides Clubâ, but because that was too clunky, everybody just called it the spirit animal club.
The club was about
who could write the most creative story about yourself and your favorite animal finding your spirit animal and connecting with other members who were communing with theirs. You didnât have to have your own spirit guide to join; anybody could sign up, but the point of joining was that you would somehow find it eventually.
Abbyâs spirit animal was a hawk named Farrow; Jaiâs was an eagle named Baldwin. Most spirit animals were âcoolâ or âprettyâ animals in that vein, such as tigers, cheetahs, foxes, bears, panthers, deer, horses, robins, swans, ravens, and wolves (that last one was
particularly common, for some reasonâŚ). Rare were the outliers: one had a boa constrictor as their spirit guide. Another had a clownfish. And absolutely no one had, say, a slug or a mole rat as their spirit animal.
The club was divisive: it was pretty popular at its peak (around fifty-nine members!), but it had its naysayers who wanted to get rid of it. The most vocal of them was Mike (the resident gay admin who hated his job for a myriad of reasons), who
knew thought the whole thing was a creative writing exercise and (by his own admission) also sort of, kind of wanted it gone out of spite. He might have succeeded if it had been smaller or less popular, but because Jai herself was a member, it stayed.
Other than that, everything was smooth sailing. Discussions centered on how to meditate to find your spirit animal, what your spirit animal was like, what your spirit animal told you today, what your spirit animal ate for breakfastâŚokay, not that last one, but you get the idea.
One memorable
thread discussed past lives: Steph (the staffer who later helped with the hack of VWW) claimed she had been a Native American girl in a Seneca tribe who drowned in a river when she was around twelve to fourteen. Another member named Jenny
said she had once lived in ancient Greece and died when she fell from a cliff. Abby had a whole
saga about how in her past life, she had been an ancient Egyptian princess who was murdered by her stepmother for challenging her authority, and she had an evil older brother and an older sister (no word on whether or not the sister was evil too), and her father was the Pharaoh for a short time (which somehow explained Abbyâs bad relationship with her own dad), and her mother had been one of the Pharaohâs concubines, so her stepmother was hateful because she couldnât have children of her own, andâŚ
You get the idea. The thread capped off with one more member
claiming her past life had been as a First Nations girl who loved salmon and ran away from home in winter when she was twelve, then froze to death, and concluding that was why she hated wearing scarves or hats in winter.
Notice that all these past lives ended in dramatic deaths at a young
age, and nobody had died from old age or illness. That was the spirit animal club for you.
But alas, such peace could not last long. That leads us to:
One, Two, Jason's Coming for You Remember the outlier with the clownfish for a spirit guide? Her name was Jessica (she was also a staff member; her character was Sparrowfeather), her clownfish was named Chloe, and one day in October 2010, she (not the clownfish) made a
post that would change everything for the club.
In this post, she detailed how she had fallen asleep and dreamed that she was looking for Chloe. When she went to a pond, a polar bear showed up and she assumed he was a spirit guide too. She asked who he was, and he introduced himself as Jason before attacking her. Fortunately, a leopard named Amber showed up in the nick of time to protect her; unfortunately, she woke up with sore and red arms that left her scratching them. Totally befuddled by the whole thing that
definitely happened, she asked what it meant.
The first
reply was from a member named Jordan, who oh so helpfully told her that Jason was probably a âshadow guideâ (without explaining what that meant) and that she probably deserved to nearly be killed because she mustâve done something bad to warrant it! Classy. The other
replies were about the same level of usefulness, with nobody understanding where this Jason weirdo had come from.
Later, Jessica posted
again in her thread that Amber told her Jason was not her spirit animal, and that her clownfish guide, Chloe, had once been contacted by the kid Jason was supposed to guide. The kid died, Jason blamed Chloe for it, and the fish went into hiding. How exactly a clownfish from the astral plane was able to cause the death of a child went unexplained.
Abbyâs helpful
advice was that Jessica should research leopards and polar bears, and eventually confront Jason to get rid of him. She cited the fact that she and Jai had both apparently had a problem with an âevil guideâ in the past and dealt with it by confronting it, but unfortunately didnât elaborate on how that happened.
There was some radio silence for a bit, then Jessica posted
again. Her next thread was about how she had a dream of walking up a creek and encountering a panther that could shapeshift. Conveniently, she somehow realized that it was Jason, and then it turned into a polar bear and attacked her. When she called out to her spirit guide for help, Amber helpfully told her that sheâd been told not to âinterfere with destinyâ and sent her good wishes, spouted off some
poorly Google Translated random Italian, and disappeared, leaving Jessica on her own to wake up just as Jason tried to kill her again. Couldnât ask for a better spirit guide.
Jessica naturally asked her
friends what this meant; Abby
posited that the Italian that Amber had spoken was her giving Jessica her
magic energy (as it literally translates to âSecurity for the baby. Sure it will. Out of harm's way, oh, can win the battle. I am sending my will, my strength and power. Let child.â).
When Jessica
asked if Jason was an evil spirit (as anyone would do after nearly being murdered in their sleep by an evil polar bear), Abby said definitively that Jason was a lost spirit animal without a human.
All was quiet for about two months, but like any good slasher movie villain, Jason made his return (making his name even more appropriateâfunny, that). His next victim was fittingly Jordan. Jordan had (allegedly) had a
problem of his own with his spirit animals three months ago: heâd had two spirit guides, a wolf named Nightshade and a snake named Ankh, and they left him because they were âmessengersâ to herald his
real spirit animal, a snowy owl named Aurora. That wouldâve been well and good until, horror of horrors, he
dreamed that Nightshade was attacked!
He found Nightshade bleeding violet blood, which we all know talking wolves have, because Jason mauled him. Aurora, ever the helpful type, told Jordan that they could protect him from Jason for a while, but like any good heroic anime protagonist, heâd have to face Jason eventually. Apparently, Jason was a demon who fed on fear and negativity, and the only way to ward him off was to show no emotion around him. The unmentioned alternative solution would probably have been to turn your back when he tries to attack you so that heâll evaporateâŚwait, wrong slasher villain. Never mind.
Anyway, Jordanâs post did not get the attention he so desperately craved; he only got one response from another member named Zach, who told him to meditate and then wished he had his own spirit animal so he could ask them about Jason. Jordanâs
reply was to give the sage advice to everyone in the club to get away from any sign of Jason in the âphysical worldâ, which apparently includes movie posters and stuffed animals, because heâs totally an Empath⢠and can tell that, shockingly, the polar bear that keeps trying to attack people feels âanger, bloodlust, and death-urgesâ! Whoâd-a thunk it?
The next day, a girl named Carolyn
posted about how her two spirit animals had disappeared. When she encountered a polar bear, she asked him if heâd seen one of them, he introduced himself as Jason, and attacked her until a hawk showed up and scared him off. The
only advice she
got was to
meditate more, and Jordan helpfully
told her that Jason was dangerous and had raging bloodlust (just in case she might have gotten confused and thought Jason was going around to give hugs).
The thread petered out after she
claimed that the hawk told her that her previous spirit animals had left her forever, presumably to avoid dealing with any pesky bears. Ah, spirit animals. Gotta love âem.
Literally one day later, a club member named Emily piped up with a Jason
story of her own. She claimed that not only did she believe her spirit animal, a white tiger named Leila, had been with her since she was a kid, she
also believed Jason had been trying to target her back then. Apparently, she asked her mother about her childhood and whether or not polar bears had been involved, and her mother
definitely told her that Emily had once woken up, screaming, âHeâs gonna get me, the polar bear!â
So from this totally legit information, Emily drew the logical conclusion that Jason was going to try to kill her,
and she could destroy him, and like any good chosen one protagonist, only
she could do it. Somehow.
Her fellow club membersâincluding Zach and Jordanâwere not so
accepting of her radical ideas, and told her she was being paranoid and to get some sleep (because, you know, thatâs totally what you should do when you think an evil polar bearâs trying to kill you in your dreams).
Jordan added the crucial information that demons didnât focus on solely one target and sought to create as much chaos as possible, because I guess he somehow became the expert on demons in addition to being an Empathâ˘. He also
claimed that Jason was actually rather cute if you got past him trying to murder everyone, because we all know attempting to murder children is a very minor character flaw that can be easily overlooked.
Emilyâs response? She
claimed she somehow fell asleep immediately after posting, was attacked by Jason in her dream, and screamed for Leila, who didnât show up. How convenient! The only
advice she got after
that was to talk to Abby or Jai about it, since they were the club admins.
Three, Four, Better Lock Your Door Not even a week passed before a fourth member, Jody,
posted that she'd seen Jason too. She had been trying to contact her own spirit guide, a swan named Dooslan, when Jason showed up. She asked him what his name was, he told her his name like any true gentleman would, and then started attacking her until a deer and a cardinal showed up and told him
"Swiper, no swiping" to stop. Then she woke up.
This sent the other members into
a tizzy, and Zach suggested that Jason, like any classic anime villain, was planning something. Steph claimed that her spirit animal
told her that saying Jason's name was what made him appear. Another member
claimed that she got blurry visions of Jason even though she hadnât even tried to contact her spirit animal.
Four days later, a member named Lilly posted about how sheâd been talking to her spirit animal, a wolf named Lacriasca, until the wolf suddenly vanished (adding another example to the pattern of spirit animals being useless thus far) and she woke up back in the real world. Then, while still in said real world, she saw Jason in front of her! And what was her reaction to being faced with this notorious terrorizer of teens she knew on the internet?
Hug him, of course. Naturally, this ended with her arm being
brokenâbut not by Jason, actually! She
told another member that sheâd been meditating outside, then conveniently got hit by a basketball right
before Jason showed up. And she had
somehow been able to hug this angry astral plane polar bear with an arm that got broken moments earlier by a basketball. Or the basketball breaking her arm was caused by Jasonâs arrival, Iâm not sure. Itâs not really clear. Maybe Jason was also a basketball player in addition to being a killer polar bear?
Jenny made a
thread to document the pattern of
everyone who got attacked by Jason. Jessica herself
commented and was shocked,
shocked, that Jason had obtained more victims! No one had any solutions to this problem, except for Abby and, surprisingly, resident spirit animal doubter Mike. Sort of.
Five, Six, Grab YourâŚWait, Thatâs It? Several days later, Mike posted a simple
challenge on the board for a member to explain what exactly their âspirit animalâ business was all about. Abby reacted to this
very calmly and gracefully, as you can see
here, and told everyone else in the club not to respond to him. After
some back-and-
forth between them, Abby linked to an
expert on spirit animals to show where sheâd gotten her interest in them. Personally, I have no idea who this guy is or how much of a verified expert he is on spirit guides, but the font he uses for everything on his site is Papyrus. Make of that what you will.
Although Abby wasnât a fan of Mikeâs little stunt, she did agree with one point heâd brought upânamely, that spirituality was largely based on your subconscious and what you manifested of it through dreams, meditation, or the like. She made a
thread to lay down the law about Jason: it was best to no longer give him attention because it would make the issue worse, and the only person she believed about the Jason attacks was Jessicaâeveryone else was overreacting, because she (somehow) knew for a fact that the spirit world had guards to keep beings like him out. From now on, anyone who wanted to talk about Jason could
only do it in a PM to her. No more posting about the evil polar bear.
Not a lot of people responded, but Jenny
pointed out the oddity of the fact that Jason had first been classified as a spirit animal without a human and was now considered a demon. Abbyâs
response was that the whole Jason thing was just a product of an âoveractive imaginationâ (insert obligatory snark about self-awareness here), because spirit animals couldnât actually hurt people physically at all, let alone cause a broken arm. According to her, Jason couldnât be a demon because demons work for the devil and no one on the site was a Satan worshiper (as far as we know), and somehow she knew all of this because sheâd been attacked by spirit animals before and only got hurt mentally. Unfortunately, she didnât elaborate on this claim (again).
The only member to respond to Abby after that was Jordan, who
suggested that Jason was a figment of a collective imagination and that everyone should stop obsessing over Jason and move on. Sound advice, which Abby agreed with, and that was the end of the thread. Allâs well that ends well, right? WellâŚ
Seven, Eight, Heâs a Poor Little Cinnamon Roll Now, Actually! Jordan proceeded to take a massive dump on his own logic and made a
thread later that same month, with the oh so civil title of âYou People Are Idiotsâ. He posted about how heâd been meditating in his basement until Jason showed up, touched his nose to Jordanâs chest, somehow caused Jordan to hallucinate about his loved ones, and turned into a little cub.
Then Jordan was transported to his âspirit worldâ, where he met with Nightshade, Ankh, Aurora, and his
fourth newly found spirit guide, a black panther named Masen, because he apparently was somehow
soooo special that he got not one, not two, not three, but FOUR spirit animals. The whole gang was shocked that Jason was now a cute cub, and Jordan heard a voice telling him that this would all make sense later. (Spoiler alert: it did not.)
He concluded the post by saying Jason followed him around everywhere now, and threatened to rip anyone who called Jason evil to pieces because he was
soooo totally "badass", being an alleged Empath⢠with five spirit animals now and all.
The reception to his self-aggrandizing little display was lukewarm, to say the least. Jenny expressed
skepticism that Jason was able to attach himself to Jordan, abiding by Jessica's story that Jason was another kidâs intended spirit guide who went rogue and Abby's claim that the âattacksâ on the other members were just their imagination. Abby had no response other than to wish him
luck with Jason,
stating that demons could shapeshift and deceive.
Jordanâs
reply was that it
did happen, and that heâs
totally an Empathâ˘, and Jasonâs totally a good guy now, girls, really, heâs a cute little de-aged cub now and everything! He went on to
say that his wolf, Nightshade, was wary and always beside him whenever Jason was around (considering that Jason, you know, mauled him and all), and he was ignoring Nightshade now because the wolf (very logically) thought he was going to do something stupid. Truly a guy worthy of having five spirit animals.
Abby and Jenny didnât take kindly to this and
told him to listen to his spirit animal, Jordan
conceded the point, and that was that.
Nine, Ten, We Can All Sleep Again The next month, Jordan
posted about how he thought he was being demonically possessed because he kept waking up to bleeding cuts on his arm. He claimed that this demon possessed him to go into the restroom during class and cut the name âDrewâ into his arm with a paperclip, and he
somehow knew that was the spiritâs name. Oh, and he was sure his friend was being possessed too because, uhâŚher pupils were big and âgear-shapedâ (I assume this was a typo), and she was laughing a lot and being clingy. Because those count as signs of demonic possession now.
Zach advised him to
meditate, but Jordan
whined he couldnât do that because all his spirit animals except for Jason were (understandably) ignoring him. The only one talking to him was Jason, who had no advice because he was currently infantilized. No one else had much valuable
advice, and Emily (remember her?)
told him on her other account to get holy water or an exorcism. Jordan
rejected both options because of his hatred for priests and shared that the demonâs full name was Drusilla (because I guess she took the time to introduce herself in between the self-mutilations).
Conveniently, he
refused to post any photos of his armâs cut because it was too âgrossâ (sure, Jan). When
advised to burn sage instead, he
claimed heâd already tried that and helpfully filled in that his spirit animals had previously been shunning him because of Jason, so he cut ties with the cub, and now his guides were fighting the demons for him. So much for ripping anyone who insulted Jason to pieces.
Emily
told him he had to say holy words while burning the sage to make it work, and that he shouldnât get a âLugi boardâ (I presume she meant âouija boardâ) because thatâd make it worse. Jordan
responded that the demons were now conveniently gone and heâd put âprotection charmsâ around his home and his friends (which I guess absolved his friend of her possession too), so it was all resolved now. Yay?
Jason basically faded into irrelevance after that, and only got a mention in two more threads. Carolyn posted
again, this time about how she
definitely saw a shadowy figure manifest in front of her, and when Zach
suggested that it might be Jason in search of a new home, Jordan
barged in to âcorrectâ him that Jason wasnât a demon (which had
nothing to do with what Zach had said). Jenny
chided Jordan in turn for talking about Jason and reiterated definitively that Jason had been another kidâs spirit animal who solely messed with Jessica, and all other sightings of him had been imaginative. After some
spamming from another kid, Abby resolved the matter by stating the shadow figure was not a demon, but a shadow guide (and yet again failed to explain what that was).
The other
thread was from a member named Morgan who talked about how, while daydreaming in math class, she had found her spirit animal sitting on the back of a polar bear. When Zach
suggested that it was Jason, Abby cut in to
reinforce the decree that Jason wasnât real and had been a figment of everyoneâs imagination. Zach
reminded her of what Jordan and Jessica had said about him; Jordan
screeched once again that his precious little baby Jason (whom he abandoned) wasnât a demon
and was somehow not a spirit, conceded grudgingly that some of Jasonâs attacks had been imaginary (presumably not including his own experiences), and whined that people were stupid. Oh, and Morgan
said her polar bearâs name was Cascade, but by that point nobody cared.
So, what can be learned from this episode? Not a lot, other than maybe the fact that an evil polar bear can do a lot to grip a bunch of teenagersâ imaginations. Sadly, that was the only exciting thing to ever happen in the spirit animal club, so thereâs not much else to write about after that. There are
some chat logs discussing the incident years later, though (âRoyâ is another name Jordan went by and, to my knowledge, is not his real name).
And on a final note: from what Iâve heard, Abby still believes in spirit animals to this day. Do whatever you want with that information.
