2023.06.04 07:00 xesonik Coding bootcamps: Brisbane

Hi there.
I'm looking for a little bit of context if anyone has some for choosing between my 2 preferred options of bootcamps.
I have some university level studies (5+ years ago) in software engineering, information systems (db and sql stuff) and lots of maths (crypto, discrete 3, few other high level). I have forgotten a lot of the more poignant CS related things since then.
I am looking at general assembly because they are targeting the more software engineering based learning, but it is 3 months and not accredited like coderacademy. This course also starts in 10 days and suggests some pre-course studies to be in the flow before starting. I could delay until next entry cohort, but prefer not to.
The coderacademy course is 6 months which i feel like would be better for my learning and outcomes, is also online but has a student hub here. The course is not as targeted to engineering as GA, but it seems to offer the same content? The course also awards a diploma at completion, which I know is small fish, but every bit helps.
I am looking to utilise the bootcamps to get a foot in the door for working in this industry, and would be happy anywhere. Once completed I am very much invested in learning cyber related skills and languages if that is a way that I could transform my career.
Just looking for some context as to people who have completed either, as most reviews and opinions online are very america centric. I have also seen a lot of support for the Odin project, cs50 and a few others, which I will use to accompany my learning, however I need some structure and direction, which these can help provide more than I ever could.

2023.06.04 06:57 Blitzidious Where/How might I be able to play some 3d era Mortal Kombat games via PC?

I am specifically looking for Deception, Deadly Alliance and Armageddon.
Reasoning: I started to really get into MK lore n stuff when Netherrealm studios was, well Netherrealm and not Midway. I want to experience the 3d era because I find many of the character designs wonderfully pleasing (I love Havik's and Hotaru's designs), and the chapter structure of storymode is growin a bit tiresome for me. Also, I have fleeting memories of when I was a wee lad watching my step-brother lose to Onaga over and over again. Just wanted to add that because I thought it was funny.
If there is a 'legal' way, I'd prefer that. The less sketchy, the better. B U T I W I L L D O W H A T I S N E C E S S A R Y

2023.06.04 06:54 Unlucky-Flounder2180 Chemical Pregnancy

Started miscarrying after chemical pregnancy today, my birthday, at 4 weeks 2 days. I haven’t told anyone in my family and it was definitely hard to spend the day with family members knowing what was happening and being in pain. But I didn’t want to stay at home all day being upset, so at least spending time with family helped take my mind off things. My sweet husband has been with me every step of the way but I am debating whether to tell anyone in my family (maybe my mom and my MIL because they are the only other women in my family). But I don’t want to impose this grief and sadness on them when I never got the chance to announce it to them in the first place. Definitely feeling lost, lonely, and heartbroken at the moment and just wanted to share my little story with someone even though it was so early.

2023.06.04 06:50 RxbelIe I’m 7 weeks pregnant and miserable.

I(26) and my husband(27) found out we were pregnant with our rainbow baby 2 weeks after we had our chemical pregnancy.
I’m currently now 7 weeks pregnant with my rainbow baby and honestly becoming a mother is all I have ever wanted. Even when I was a little girl myself I’d walk around with my baby dolls pretending to be a mother. When I had my chemical pregnancy 2 months ago my husband and I were devastated and then surprised at how quickly we conceived again. It’s truly been a rollercoaster of emotions but mostly good.. until recently.
We got great news that at 5 weeks my hcg was 3333! So that was a huge relief to my husband and I that baby is doing great! Of course though as my symptoms got stronger my mood got lower.
Now I’m 7 weeks pregnant and I feel so guilty typing this but I am miserable. The moment I wake up in the morning I immediately feel so hungry that my stomach hurts and so nauseous I’ll vomit if I stand but I have to stand because my bladder is so full I’ll pee if don’t get up asap! As soon as I eat anything no matter how small I vomit. No matter what fluid I’m drinking I vomit. This continues all day, the past 2 days I have barely kept any food or water down. My stomach hurts in so many places and I also suffer from Crohn’s Disease which thankfully I’m in remission at the moment but the bathroom problems have been relentless that I could write a paragraph on them alone. I’m exhausted I just want to sleep all day but I can’t because the moment I’m laying down I have to vomit. There’s so much anxiety and stress I feel from my previous miscarriage that it could happen again and ontop of everything I feel so alone.
I guess I was really naive that I knew pregnancy symptoms affects people differently but I always thought no matter what I’d be happy because this is everything I’ve ever wanted but I just don’t feel that way. I just feel awful. I keep beating myself telling myself there’s so many woman out there that would do anything to even be in the position I am and to be pregnant! It makes me feel so guilty, ontop of this I moved from my home country to the US to be with my husband so I don’t have my own family personally to lean on just my husbands family and don’t get me wrong they are fantastic! However I tried to express to my MIL what was going on and I just felt like I was being looked at like I’m crazy. She spoke about how her symptoms wore off in a a few weeks and it wasn’t that big of a deal.
I could really use some reassuring words and some stories to know I’m not alone in feeling like this.
Thank you.

"adhd basically means your reward system is messed up. you crave immediate reward and satisfaction, often fantasising about lofty goals so you can get the reward without doing the task. if a task requires effort without immediate reward, it's very hard to do without immediate threat like the anxiety of a deadline, or structure, like your parents hassling you to do homework."
Someone told me this, and it really fit me, so just curious how to manage or try to fix this?

2023.06.04 06:43 xX_codgod420_Xx An Amateur Investigation into the Psychology of r/LionsManeRecovery

I want to start by asking that nobody engages in any sort of brigading or personal attacks as a result of this post. I'm only interested in contributing to the discussion so we can begin moving past some major issues surrounding lion's mane that have cropped up recently.
I'm not an expert, but I do have some relevant personal experience. I wanted to investigate (within 10k characters) some prominent users of the LionsManeRecovery community to figure out what's going on. What I seemed to find is that mental health struggles are at the core of the problem, and the people I looked at all seem to be dealing with different issues, grouping together via internet phenomena over the shared commonality of their incidental use of lion's mane.
I first came across this post by u/MikeJBWilliam where he was exclaiming how LM can cause permanent damage, and gave a long list of anecdotes from different Reddit users. This was his most recent post:

Lion's Mane Permanently Damaged My Ability to Visualize

He describes how years prior, he took Om brand LM extract for 5 days. As far as I can tell Om doesn't actually sell extract, and he was taking what some user called "myceliated rice powder", possibly mixed with dry mushroom. He was taking a product that was weaker than the lion's mane extracts that you'd typically buy in pill form, but he thought that he was taking an unusually large amount.
Over this period, I also noticed a gradual decline in my memory and ability to focus. College work became excruciating, and holding more than one idea in my mind became frustratingly difficult.
My mental abilities have remained heavily impaired since. I find it almost impossible to dream or visualize[...]
Looking a bit deeper into u/MikeJBWilliam's history, I found these posts:

Why would Lion's Mane mushroom cause permanent brain damage in the prefrontal cortex?

Why would Lion's Mane mushrooms permanently destroy my working memory?

The posts are removed, but the comments give some interesting clues.
Further back in their user history, I found several posts detailing the use of psychedelics and research chemicals to self-medicate "a decade long anhedonic depression/dissociation that neither therapy or a good lifestyle could fix". He mentions that he ingested the LM powder while on "about a tenth of a blotter" of LSD:
Within minutes of taking the mushrooms a part of my awareness "switched off". It has still not turned back on again. It was a scary experience and over the next few months I fully realized what I had lost.
Focusing on my studies became incredible difficult as I could no longer hold things and "see them clearly" in my working memory. I lost the ability to dream and to visualize. I started getting agitated/annoyed/aggressive in social situations (Something that I never used to do) and I felt a lot less safe riding a bicycle, as I lacked the full awareness of my surroundings (cars on the road, pedestrians on the footpaths).

Have research chemicals PERMANENTLY and negativity impacted your life?

On the nootropics sub, one user said this on the matter:
What you describe sounds very much like thought withdrawal which is a symptom of schizophrenia. Very likely induced by the LSD.
My impression is that this person was likely predisposed to psychosis/schizophrenia, and was using a range of powerful substances to self-medicate during the prodromal phase. It's hard to say whether LM potentiated the LSD in some way, or whether they would have experienced the same decline, at the same time, if they didn't combine these substances. But I do not think that this was an issue caused by lion's mane.
Next is the top moderator and one of the most active users, u/ciudadvenus. I think they're mostly responsible for the depictions of fire and brimstone that you can see in the subreddit. They're the one with the current pinned post, which says:
Do not try Lion's Mane under any circumstances! The price you could pay later is simply not worth it! This is seriously the most dangerous substance that exists.
The worst imaginable hell on earth

DO NOT TRY LION'S MANE! NO MATTER WHAT!

In the main text, they describe symptoms like "physical and mental pain", "rushes of accelerated heartbeat many times per day", "an extreme sensation of absolute fear without cause at all", "depersonalization and derealization", "strong panic attacks", etc.

How One Pill of Lion's Mane Nearly Destroyed My Life

He says that he took a single 500mg dosage of fruiting body extract from 'Nature’s Answer', 1/3rd of the daily dose recommended on the bottle.
So, I've experienced his symptoms hundreds of times, and the progression of his condition mirrors what I went through a few years ago.
He developed panic disorder, but did not understand what was going on. While desperately seeking an answer, he latched onto the idea that it was an unknown medical condition resulting from a single low dose of lion's mane. In reality the LM was probably an innocent bystander.
Clues within the earlier parts of the post establish that he was both nervous about taking lion's mane, and had difficulty sleeping the night before the first panic attack. I'm going to assume that he was also predisposed to anxiety and neuroticism. These are all precipitating factors. Much like my own experience with the disorder, if it didn't start then, it probably would have started later. I don't think that lion's mane physically contributed to it in a significant way.
Another major user on that subreddit I want to mention is u/MicroscopicStonework. This is the other primary moderator. They also have a YouTube channel primarily dedicated to vlogs on the topic.
This user had also ingested the Om brand of powdered lion's mane material. He says that it was for only two weeks.
In his vlogs he gives descriptions of various persistent somatic experiences and anxieties. Among the issues he reports are perceptions of muscle tightness, compulsive and repetitive movements in various body parts, numbness and weakness in the fingers, a severe inability to focus and find relief aside from when he's asleep, as well as feelings of despair and guilt for how his condition is affecting those around him.
It's clear that this person is suffering immensely, and it's heartbreaking to see. I'm very concerned about the medical procedures that he's had done, such as 'nerve block injections'. I feel as if the doctors he's dealing with are ignorant of the nature of his problems, and this probably contributes to his feelings of confusion and hopelessness.
One of his significant contributions to the LionsManeRecovery subreddit is a massive write-up that begins here:

Life Could Have Been a Dream: did taking Lion’s Mane destroy my life?

u/MicroscopicStonework does not seem to be dealing with panic attacks or psychosis. While I can't diagnose him, I have some ideas. From skimming through the text posts, it seemed to be a pretty clear case of hypochondria. And that's likely true. But from watching the vlogs, I also get a very strong impression that the root cause is that this individual may be suffering from undiagnosed Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) with heavy somatic and tourettic features.
I say this as someone who has OCD and Tourette's Syndrome, which led me to experience severe health obsessions, as well as panic disorder, in the past.
Outside of their respective communities, these neurological conditions are very misunderstood, and it's common for them to be misdiagnosed by doctors who aren't educated on them. Sufferers can have a hard time describing their symptoms as well.
"Tourettic OCD" seems to closely align with his experiences of compulsive movements in response to different feelings of tension and whatnot. This is a decent introduction to the concept:
https://youtu.be/evxW-7vK4bU
Tourette's is another possibility, but there's a lot of overlap, and OCD alone can cause these symptoms. Extreme stress can also cause "Functional neurological symptom disorder", that being dysfunction absent a physical cause.
Preoccupations and worries regarding health and well-being are also common, including closely perceiving normal sensations (including symptoms of stress/anxiety) to the point that they are distressing.
Lastly, a quick mention of Ryan Russo: a bodybuilding influencer who's spoken on the topic as well. He blames lion's mane for a set of symptoms he has - primarily sexual dysfunction.
From watching that video we can see that he admits to abusing steroids and taking testosterone. These things are known for ruining the body's natural ability to produce T, and I'm highly skeptical of the idea that lion's mane is the cause of his problems, as opposed to damage from using gear.

2023.06.04 06:43 fitzafnu MD port authority planned Patapsco CAD site

Background:
The Maryland Port Authority has to constantly dredge the Baltimore Harbor, shipping terminals, and shipping channels to keep them open. Much of the dredge removed from the Baltimore harbor and Patapsco River near old industrial sites is contaminated with heavy metals, oils, and other toxic "forever" chemicals. The Maryland Port Authority (MPA) has to dry and store this dredged material in special "containment sites" because it is unsafe for human exposure. (See https://maryland-dmmp.com/). Before the 1970s, this material was often dumped back into the Chesapeake Bay. After ecological awareness arose in the 1970s and dumping was regulated, MPA was forced to create diked land-based dredge containment facilities to dry and store dredged material.
These sites, once created, are forever contaminated. MPA has done its best to create these sites where they make the least impact - often in already-contaminated abandoned industrial areas. MPA also creates conservation areas to make amends for the harm, makes clean dredge available for shoreline restorations and construction projects, makes contaminated dredge available for re-use research, and in some cases recreates islands lost to erosion (Hart-Miller Island, Poplar Island, and James and Barren Islands) using dredged material.
After significant pushback from communities near Hart-Miller Island for decades and years of litigation, MPA shut down the Hart-Miller dredge containment facility before its completion and shifted their attention to creating dredge containment sites near Baltimore in already-contaminated industrial areas next to Fort Armistead (Cox Creek DMCF) in Anne Arundel County and in Masonville next to Brooklyn. Ongoing dredging activities and plans to fill these sites to heights of 60 feet or higher with contaminated dredge and their runoff are already a significant concern for the quality of the water and the aquatic life in the Patapsco and its tidal tributaries. A potentially even greater concern is that because MPA is running out of land-based locations to contain contaminated dredge, it now plans to create Confined Aquatic Dredge (CAD) sites in the seabed of the Patapsco River to essentially bury contaminated dredge underwater in the sea floor. The first MPA full scale CAD site is planned to be built one mile off the shore of the communities of Stoney Beach and Riviera Beach near the entrance to Stoney Creek.
The planned Patapsco CAD site will be up to 220 acres in size. MPA plans to remove clean seabed material from the site for several months and make it available to construction companies and for shoreline restoration efforts and then replace it with contaminated dredge material for several more months sometime in the next year. MPA asserts that unlike historic dredge dumping, this CAD site will be "capped" and "safe". However, there will inevitably be a significant release of contaminants and turbidity into the Patapsco from this activity and permanent impact within and near the CAD site. Contaminated dredge material suspended in water can't be totally contained. Moreover, long-term ecological impacts from leaching and seabed shifting can't be predicted.
Concerns:
Northern Anne Arundel communities near the planned CAD site are very concerned about several potential issues related to its creation:
  1. The noise from planned 24/7 dredging for several months at a time as well as spotlighting at night since this will be over a mile closer to Stoney Beach and Riviera Beach than the shipping channel.
  2. The safety of residents in nearby waters to swim, fish, and engage in watersports on the Patapsco and in Stoney Creek, Cox Creek, and downstream tributaries during and after dredging from exposure to chemical and biological toxins released into the water.
  3. The impact of such dredging on aquatic life and ecosystems including waterfowl that depend on it.
  4. The long-term ecological impact on the CAD site, nearby shorelines, and the tidal waters around it.
  5. The potential short and long-term geographical extent of ecological and human exposure to released toxins given unpredictable winds, currents, storms, tidal swings, and sea level rise.
We have questions related to these concerns and would like a greater understanding of how impacts will be measured and mitigated and what the potential risks to our communities might be - including being exposed to chemical and biological toxins. Of particular concern if this program moves forward is how will toxins be measured, where will they be measured, how will communities be notified if toxins in the water around their shoreline reaches harmful levels, and what might the long-term effects of such toxins be that might settle around our shorelines?
While we are concerned, we also appreciate that MPA is creating conservation sites such as the Swan Creek Wetlands next to the Cox Creek facility and making clean dredge material available at little or no cost to communities engaged in shoreline restoration efforts - including Stoney Beach which is planning an important natural shoreline project to protect a highly eroded natural area at our point where the Patapsco meets Stoney Creek. This greatly reduces the cost of shoreline restoration.

2023.06.04 06:41 mangoyogurt0 Engineering Girl with sub-(A2C)standard ECs and Awards get a surprise! + reflection and advice

Hi! As you will see, I didn't publish research/co-author a papecreate a non-profit/found a company/present at a science faiwin a national award/etc/etc. Hopefully future applicants will learn something idk. I realize the post is very long, at the end is my reflection/advice. Keeping it vague because I don't want to get exposed as a Reddit user to my friends
Demographics
Intended Major: MechE
Academics
Standardized Testing
Extracurriculars/Activities
  1. Robotics (9-12, mechanical lead in 12th): by far my biggest time commitment but also my least favorite activity because team politics :
  2. Robotics Internship at local university (12): sounds cool but wasn't actually. Followed undergraduate researcher around the lab, failed a couple of 3D prints, mixed some chemicals. No reports published, no research authored. At least I had fun
  3. Independent project with university professor (10): also sounds cool but wasn't actually. got the project through pure nepotism because it was COVID and my parents were stressed I was doing jack shit at home, again at least I had fun
  4. Volunteer for science organization (9-12): my favorite activity I easily spent 200+ hours on it to the point where my parents told me to chill a bit because I was not doing other things. basically teaching younger students various science topics
  5. Orchestra (9-12): played oboe/english horn in highest ranked youth orchestra in the area. Liked orchestra, did not like lessons and practice
  6. Soccer (9-12): JV (9,10) and varsity (11,12). did pretty well in JV but ate more snacks than I played matches in varsity
  7. School Rocket Club (9-11): I was really into rockets and such in middle school but then I stopped liking it in the middle of 10th grade and I stuck it out until 11th but gave up in 12th
  8. Random ass personal robot project (11): I was bored. It looked really janky and barely worked but the colleges don't need to know that. Submitted to a total of 0 science fairs/awards.
  9. Local children's museum volunteer (9-12): I quite enjoyed this one even though it involved talking to people. Basic museum staff things like front desk management, giving prizes to kids, telling people where the bathroom is when the giant sign is right above them
  10. Playing piano (9-12): In the Common App's "Position/Leadership Description" I wrote "Hobby" lmao
Awards/Honors
  1. Robotics team award
  2. State/County honor bands
  3. Qualified for AIME in 11th and 12th (for the record, both years I made it by 1.5 points and got 1 point on the actual AIME, but again, colleges don't need to know that) (unless they asked for it in their application)
  4. National Merit Semi Finalist
  5. Spanish award from school
Letters of Recommendation
I would say my rec letters were probably pretty good. I got 3 recs total, with at most 2 going to each college depending on what teachers they wanted. I'd known them for all four years of high school some way or another, so I had a more friend-friend relationship with them instead of teacher-student.
Interviews
MIT: My first interview! It was definitely a "I ask you answer" kinda feel instead of conversational. The guy would not stop staring at me and smiling which I think meant he was listening to me intently but I was a bit unnerved
Cornell: He was really nice and funny but he also did most of the talking. I vibed with him though
Princeton: Was given the option to do either in-person or virtual, chose Zoom because I couldn't be bothered to go out of my house. Also I was on vacation when they emailed and I didn't email back until my interviewer sent a follow-up email. The interview itself was good though, she was from the same area I'm from so we had some things in common.
Essays
I spent a hell of a lot of time writing my essays. I had one outside paid tutor look at some of them, but only a couple since I ran out of time near the end and most of the RD essays went unchecked. I really liked my personal statement though. I can explain more in detail if you want to known through DMs but it wasn't anything big and sad and traumatic, I think it was kind of funny and said a lot about my personality/my values.
Decisions
Acceptances:
Waitlists:
Rejections:
Reflection (skip to next section if you don't wanna read me ranting about my college choices):
Ultimately, I chose Princeton over the strong public engineering schools (which I think are ranked higher in terms of engineering than Princeton?) because of a couple of reasons:
  1. Majors--I tried compsci this year and quite enjoyed it, so I started also considering CS/EE/CE over MechE. At Berkeley switching would be virtually impossible, and it would be difficult at the other public schools as well due to capped major policies and such.
  2. Size--I didn't like the size of public schools. I personally know students who loved it, but I really didn't want to go to a big school.
  3. Undergraduate programs--Princeton really sold me on their "undergraduate focused" school, basically that due to their very small graduate population a lot of their resources like funding, research opportunities, faculty are much more available to undergraduates than other schools with a large graduate body.
  4. Prestige--yeah I'm not gonna lie prestige definitely pushed me and my parents in the Princeton direction, especially as immigrants they were excited about Ivys
Side note: I'm OOS for all publics, but even then I think Princeton had the highest price for me. They did give me financial aid (albeit a very small amount) which helped. Whichever school I chose, my parents had enough savings so I wouldn't have to take out loans, which I'm very grateful about.
Advice:
I'm honestly just as clueless as you are as to college admissions, but here's my take from the past several months. If I had to guess which part of my application got me into these schools--since I know there are people with more "impressive" ECs and awards who got rejected--I would say my essays and everything that comes with them. I wrote them about things that were unique to me, in ways that were unique to me. None of them were about really impactful things, but I'd like to say they were very honest about me and my life, which I think showed my personality really well. In a similar vein, I truly enjoyed my extracurriculars. If I could redo high school, I wouldn't not do any of them. I think this showed in my essays as well. Another note: for a lot of my extracurriculars, I did them for all four years of high school and continued them even after application season, which is definitely a plus as it shows admissions officers commitment and that I'm passionate about what I do, not just starting in junior year for college.
Hoping this helped! If you have any questions, feel free to DM, but please take everything here with a grain of salt because the biggest lesson I've learned through this process is that it all really comes down to luck.

What You Get: MODULE 1: The Presuppositional Playbook Psychology The most fundamental difference in face to face, vs virtual selling is the absolute need to have the prospect be pushing for the sale. They must be the one driving for the solution. They have to want it more than you do. They have to be more engaged in the process than they are face to face. When you sell virtually the more you talk, the worse your close rates will be. When you are sitting with a prospect together, it’s easy to have the momentum of the meeting and the relationship you’ve developed together carry the sale to the finish line. This does not happen virtually. There is a distance, a void between you and the prospect that is easy for them to take your information and disappear, taking it to another advisor they know better. Presuppositional Selling does two important things. First, it structures the sales interaction in such a way that the prospect discovers intrisically the problems, pains, gains, and desire for a solution. One of the most powerful ways P2 selling works is helping the prospect see what they have not seen before. It changes context. It changes the frame. The Crucial 1st Appointment The first appointment in the leverage point that determines the success or failure of your entire sales process. Do a poor first appointment by talking too much, or ‘spilling your candy in the lobby’ and you’re doomed. Prospects won’t show up on the next call, and they will be lost and gone forever. There is an art and a science to doing the first appointment effectively and you’ll see exactly how to do it right. It starts with our 13 steps first appointment playbook. In this playbook you’ll get:
  • How to steamroll the first 6 common objections you may receive at the beginning of a first appointment.
  • How to create authority in the first 30 seconds of a first appointment, by doing the EXACT opposite of what your prospect expects…and what every other salesperson does.
  • The Credibility Transfer: How to use “borrowed credibility” to get your prospects to trust you—even if they don’t know who you are.
  • The PLI “Power Switch” Principle that flips the power dynamic, so YOU are perceived to have the power (and not the prospect).
  • The One Eyed Man principle that STOPS the prospect from treating you like a salesperson.
  • RAPID SUCCESS IN JUST 20 MINUTES: Learn how to do a first appointment in just 20 minutes over the phone, no technology needed.
  • The Decision Matrix: This is the most critical part of the entire sale…and it’s made right here. (Most producers hit only 1 out of the 4 keys to the decision matrix and it costs them sales constantly.)
  • STOP THE HATERS: How to ensure competitors, incumbents, and other ‘characters’ don’t blow up your sales with bad advice to your clients. (PLEASE, if you do nothing else, learn this critical component to stop losing deals needlessly!)
  • The “golden thread of motivation”: This is the thread that holds the entire sale together. When a prospect forgets why they called, why they are meeting with you, or why they are buying, you will fail in closing the sale.
  • The “Fried Chicken Rule”that ensures your prospect is engaged and selling themselves, not tuning out.
  • How to set ROCK SOLID second appointments to ensure you never get a ‘no show’ on your next appointment.
  • The SOLUTION step: How to ensure you are sharing just enough to whet their appetite and create burning curiosity for the next appointment to get them coming back for more, (while being 100% compliant!)

2023.06.04 06:38 bitchyblowjob "Experimental" or "Noisy" aren't the reasons why a song isn't GP-friendly, a song's catchiness is much more important.

A lot of kpop stans think that groups who make "experimental" or "noise" music don't chart well because the music isn't GP friendly and whilst I agree that harsh instrumentation is polarising, I don't think that a song can be written off as being "misunderstood by the general public" just because it is "noisy" or "experimental".
For example, aespa's Next Level has a notably unorthodox song structure and Savage has a loud and grating instrumental, but both songs charted well due to their catchy hooks. Meanwhile, Girls is less "experimental" but did not perform as well and IMO that was because Girls didn't have an easily identifiable hook and wasn't as catchy (the same can be applied to Illusion). Like, everybody was quoting Next Level and Savage with "Naevis calling", "OMG don't you know I'm a savage", "my Naevis we love you" as well as the actual choruses (gimme gimme now/I'm on the next level), whereas nobody was quoting Girls.
Similarly, Red Velvet's Ice Cream Cake and Birthday both have a loud EDM chorus (in contrast to the rest of the song) but were received very differently. ICC has catchy elements whereas Birthday is a bit disjointed and awkward in its progression (the pre-chorus is godly tho lmao) hence it was polarising upon release as it did not have a catchy or easily identifiable hook.
NMIXX's debut was very polarising but I think the reason Dice and even TANK were received more positively than O.O was because those songs had catchier moments despite also being "noise music".
As for boy groups, I'm not a big fan of NCT 127's Kick It and prefer Punch a lot more but Kick It is still the more popular title track due to its hook (even though I find the chorus grating). Kick It is more popular than NCT 127's title tracks that aren't experimental like Limitless and Highway to Heaven and that's mainly because they don't have a hook that is as addictive.
2nd gen kpop was very heavy on synths and instrumentals (because it was a trend in pop music everywhere at the time) but noisy 2nd gen songs were still popular even if they weren't the smoothest listening experience. Good examples of this include T-ARA and f(x) but there are so many EDM heavy 2nd gen songs that were super popular like I Got A Boy or I Am The Best.
I think a lack of a catchy/easily identifiable hook is the reason for a lot of songs not charting well even if those songs aren't "experimental" and are "GP friendly".
For example, STAYC's Beautiful Monster did not have a catchy hook and thus it didn't perform as well as ASAP/Stereotype/RUN2U. Teddy Bear isn't their most popular title track amongst fans but it did chart considerably better than Beautiful Monster (again due to its recognisable hook).
In addition, Twice's Set Me Free wasn't as popular as their previous releases (or even Moonlight Sunrise) and that's mainly due to the chorus which isn't as catchy (not saying it's bad just not as captivating). The same could be applied to a lot of Twice's title tracks that aren't as popular in the fandom such as Scientist, More and More, and Knock Knock. Meanwhile, their title tracks that do have a more "unusual instrumental" like Cheer Up or Signal are popular, mainly due to all the killing parts. So clearly a song being "loud/experimental" is not wholly the reason why it isn't popular; easy-to-digest "gp friendly" music can be equally as polarising.
SPEED ROUND title tracks with easily identifiable, memorable hooks that are more popular than songs that aren't as catchy. (not saying these songs are better, just that they have more compelling hooks)
Yes, you can prefer any of the other titles over the more "popular" one and think the others are catchier. I'm just going off of general consensus (loosely) and the success of the songs, the more "popular" titles aren't necessarily my favourites like I prefer Umpah Umpah over Red Flavour for example, I'm just giving examples of kpop songs that IMO have more identifiable hooks and are more "popular".
Additionally, I am aware that there are many reasons that a song is populasuccessful and that "catchiness" is very subjective. But, I don't think that "noisy" or "experimental" music is destined to be unfriendly for the GP. Whilst it is true that kpop songs that are easier to digest and not harsh or jarring in sound have more appeal like NewJeans' OMG or Cupid's Fifty Fifty, both of those songs are popular in part to their memorable hooks.
I also do realise that there are groups who make straightforward, catchy pop music but don't receive much attention from kpop fans or the general public, and that's largely due to the many factors that play into having a hit song (notoriety of group/company, quality of promotion, being in the right place at the right time, LUCK and so on).
In conclusion, I think it's best not to label "experimental" songs as being "GP unfriendly", I also think that term gets thrown around a lot which is why I put "experimental" and "noisy" in quotation marks throughout my post because obviously, music is subjective. Groups with sudden rises in popularity like Momoland with Bboom Bboom, Brave Girls with Rollin and currently Fifty Fifty with Cupid all of these songs have memorable and addictive hooks, which is one, of many, reasons for their sudden success.
Not sure how to end this post so I'll say TUNE INTO FROMIS_9 COMEBACK June 5th!! 😋😋😋

2023.06.04 06:37 horolo9008 Reincarnation is such an anxiety inducing concept that makes zero sense. When you die in a dream, you wake up

Why is reincarnation such a popular concept? It's awful, especially when it's presented as "automatic" and like you can't choose anything, it's anxiety inducing and it makes no sense. It has always suffocated me and idk why it's getting even more popular
I think this world that is MADE for experience (as in, if the little numbers that make up our reality were even 0.00000001% slightly chemically different we couldn't even be alive - source: "Biocentrism") has given put in Us the biggest intuition there is for the opposites that are Life & Death / Waking state & Sleeping state. Both have the Observer, which is us.
On one night you can dream multiple dreams, sure; for the sake of argument this could be the “different incarnations”
But when someone kills you in a dream or you die on a car accident on this dream, you, The Dreamer, wakes up
Without you, The Dreamer, who would be observing All?
When you die in this dream, you will also wake up https://youtu.be/WWlXgoTDDGo
"You" will witness death whether it comes while we are sleeping or we are awake.
The Knower is outside of experience. But without it, experience couldn’t be known.
When you dream at night,
That character within the dream never asks about its dreamer
Why would it ask about you sleeping? But we can do that. We find the Ultimate Witness there
That one never even flinches at experience.
It’s there when you dream!
And when the alarm clock rings,
It’s still there, ever-presently, witnessing the transition between the two states.
That's the one who will witness our death, and the one who will wake up; our True Self

Epithelial tissue exists in many structural forms. In general, it either covers or lines one issue and usually consists of renewable sheets of cells that have surface specializations made-to-order for his or her specific roles. Usually, a basement membrane separates tissue tissues from underlying, adjacent tissues. tissue tissues absorb (e.g., the liner of the little intestine), transport (e.g., internal organ tubules), excrete (e.g., sweat glands), protect (e.g., the skin), and contain nerve cells for sensory reception (e.g., the fashion buds inside the tongue).

Function depends upon structure;

2023.06.04 06:27 memuyskens Stock OS to GarlicOS .sav transfer issue

Hello!
I just setup Garlic OS on my RG35XX. I had been playing Pokemon Crystal on the stock OS and had a .sav file I wanted to transfer over. On the stock OS, there was a GBC save folder with .rtc and .sav files (others too- .gqs, .gqscrc, .gqspic). I made a copy of these files before installing Garlic OS. I brought over my Pokemon Crystal ROM and booted it up in Garlic, made a save, and was able to see the file/folder structure of saves in Garlic. I then copied all of the files from the stock OS and overwrote the files for my temporary save (.rtc and .srm). I even made sure I renamed the .sav file to .srm (I tried not doing it as well). I've tried a few different things at this point but nothing is working and I'm not sure what to do next. The issue is that when all of the files are where they should be, I open the game and the screen flashes white and doesn't progress to the ROM. It just stays stuck on the white screen and I need to force shutdown the device.
Could anyone share some advice on the correct way to copy over these files (which ones matter, where they go, what the names/extensions should be)?
