I know that nesting is apart of the planned features of Path of titans, but I spent an hour thinking in bed about how the mechanics will work, so I decided to write this for others to look at. :) Let me know what you think of it, if you think its balanced or not.
The Mating Process
The mating process will require a male and female of the same species. Two different species cannot mate. Get close to a partner, and send a mating request. It will pop up like a group invite - "Player is requesting to mate!"
Accepting the mating invite while within close range to the player will begin the family friendly mating animation, and will last 5-10 seconds. If attacked by an enemy during the mating animation, it will be interrupted and another mating invite will have to be sent. It's recommended to mate in a safe area because of this. Players cannot move during the mating animation, so if not done safely, it will be easy for an enemy to get an easy first bite. Look at your surroundings before you begin to ensure you don't get jumped.
Once the mating succeeds, the female receives the "Egg-bound" buff. This buff will stay until the eggs are laid, or until the female dies. A female with the "Egg-bound" buff will receive a quest on the side of the screen, in purple text: "Gather materials for the nest." These include sticks, succulent, lakeweed, lake sponge, etc. Depending on the Dinosaur, a certain amount of nesting materials is needed. For smaller Dinos like Deinonychus, will only need 20 pieces of nesting material, while larger dinosaurs like T-Rex, will need 80 pieces of nesting material. Everybody in the females group receives this quest, and it acts like a group quest, where anybody can help gather nesting materials. If the male wishes to no longer associate with the female after the mating process, he doesn't have to. Leaving the females group (if he was in one) will remove the nesting quest, as well as anyone else who was in the group as well. Only the egg-bound female is required to complete the quest, and cannot get rid of it unless she gets rid of the egg-bound buff.
The Nesting Process
Once all nesting materials have been gathered, the female can now lay her eggs. You will get a quest - "Lay your eggs!" Choose a good place to lay them, because once they are laid, they cannot be moved! Choose a safe spot like a cave, or if you're a flying creature, up very high in order to keep your eggs as safe as possible. Make sure you lay them on a flat surface so your baby's don't fall out of the nest immediately after hatching. Pressing and holding the K key (configurable) will build a nest and lay the eggs underneath the female. (Must be held for at least 3 seconds!) Keeping the eggs warm is not necessary, just staying near them and protecting them is good enough. The eggs will then be marked on your map, so if you happen to die, you can go back and find your nest so long it hasn't been ransacked. The eggs will then gain a timer of 30 minutes (configurable) until they will hatch. You can also manually hatch them if you want. The size of the nest and the eggs differ depending on which dinosaur laid them, and the amount of eggs also varies between dinosaurs. Smaller dinosaurs such as Deinonychus can produce up to 6 Eggs in one nest, while a T-Rex can only produce up to 2. This is for balancing purposes. Once the female lays the eggs, she is able to log off, walk away, and do whatever she pleases. She no longer has obligation to care for the eggs. If she doesn't wish to have anything to do with the nest after its laid, then she is allowed to decide that. Any dinosaur can take care of the eggs if the mother doesn't want to, but the mother is the only one who can manually hatch the nest. Otherwise, the timer needs to expire for the eggs to hatch. It will be very likely the eggs will not make it if the mother lays them and then leaves them, but on the off chance they do hatch, the hatchlings will be on their own. It would be an amazing brag to have hatched from an abandoned nest and survived to sub-adulthood. Maybe that can be a challenge for some!
Mammals
Any mammal dinosaurs (ones that cannot lay eggs) will go through the same process, however the buff they get will be called "Pregnant" and they will not lay eggs, but they will give birth to a small creature bundled in leaves. It will still take 30 minutes for the baby to emerge. Depending on the dinosaur, multiple bundles can be birthed.
Sea creatures
Any sea creatures that can only lay eggs underneath the water, will lay their eggs in the form of Roe instead of eggs. This means that the minimum fish eggs a sea creature can lay will have to be higher then 1. Gathering Nesting materials is not needed! Semi aquatics such as Sarcosuchus will go through the same process as land walkers who lay eggs, and lay their eggs on the surface.
Hatchling Creation
During the 30 minute egg timer, players can join the nest through the Nest tab in the Socials menu. Mothers can invite players, lock nests to friends only, and open nests can be joined by players. It'll basically function like the grouping system but in the form of nests instead. Players can choose how they look upon emerging, or they can allow the game to decide how they look. They will not be able to choose the dinosaur they emerge as however, since that depends on the mother species.
If players choose manual character creation, players will notice that there are 3 new skins are available. These are Hatchling Skins! These skins are acquired by hatching from a players nest, and surviving until Sub-adulthood. Once this is accomplished, the skins are available for purchase with Marks just as normal on that dinosaur species. Once the hatchling has been created, the player then must wait until the nest hatches, or until the mother hatches them manually.

Once at least one player has joined the nest, the player will view the egg from a third person view as if they are playing as the egg, but cannot move. They are able to turn the camera and view the world around them however. The mother has the option to manually hatch the nest, which can be done through the Nesting tab in the socials menu. This means the mother can be as far or as close as she wants, and still allow the eggs to hatch. Another way to hatch is to let the 30 minute timer expire, and any eggs in the nest will hatch automatically. Any eggs that have not been player claimed will simply disappear upon hatching, but the player claimed ones will turn into hatchlings. If none of the eggs in the nest are player claimed, manually hatching the nest or letting the timer expire will simply despawn the eggs. Any players who hatched out of the eggs will have the location of their hatch spot marked on their map until sub-adulthood. This is to help hatchlings who have wandered far away find home again, unless the family decides to move.
Hatchlings cannot be trampled or attacked by family members until sub-adulthood. This is to ensure players don't make nests just to kill the babies.
Living as a hatchling
Living as a players hatchling is much more difficult and can be challenging, mostly because, if you die before sub-adulthood, the hatchling is erased from your played dinosaurs. Starvation, being attacked, thirst, falling from a height, etc. This is because in order to unlock the hatchling skins, you must live from hatchling to sub-adult in one go. Death will erase the character, and you will have to start again anew. However once you hit sub-adulthood, you are free from the games clutches and you forever have that dinosaur as playable no matter if you die or not. Safe logging off the server before sub-adulthood will still allow the dinosaur to be played. Parents, protect your kids! They rely on you to help unlock those skins and survive. If the hatchlings mother logs off, it will be up to the other parents or group members or even siblings to help protect the hatchling. Hatchlings can walk around, do quests, attack and all that stuff just as normal dinosaurs can, but it is heavily recommended for the hatchling to have a body guard until at least the Juvenile or Adolescent stage. If the guardian was the only group member and they log off, it is recommended for the hatchling to stay hidden until they come back, log on as a different dinosaur in the meantime, or find a trustworthy Dinosaur to help protect and raise them, as dying before sub-adulthood will render the hatchling no longer playable. Any Dinosaur, Carnivore or Herbivore can raise a hatchling of any kind. Herbivores must take caution when raising a carnivore however, for obvious reasons. Most realism servers would most likely have a rule against Herbivores raising Carnivores as they do now with roleplaying babies.

Larger dinosaurs such as Sarcosuchus and Allosaurus can pick them up with their mouth and swallow them much like meat chunks and fish, but smaller dinosaurs and scavengers such as Deinonychus and Thalassodromeus must SWIPE the eggs first! If they can carry them and get away, then they are free to put them on the ground and eat them. They cannot start eating unless they put the egg down on the ground first. Once an egg begins to be eaten, it can no longer hatch. If a carnivore or scavenger picks up the egg and then drops it somewhere outside the nest, the egg can be put back into the nest to continue incubating, so long as the scavenger hasn't taken a bite already. Any Dinosaur can remove and replace eggs from any nest, even if it doesn't belong to them. Eggs can be taken from one nest, and put into a different nest. This means an Allosaurus egg is able to hatch within a Stegosaurus nest, but it must come from an Allosaurus nest. The Allosaurus in question is still tied to their mothers egg timer, so it will not hatch alongside the Stego eggs, and will hatch at the same time as the Allosaurus eggs instead. The only difference is the location they're in, and so long an egg is in a nest of some kind, it is able to hatch. However, the mother or guardian has the ability to cull the egg that does not belong to her nest, or if she doesn't realize the egg doesn't belong to her, cull the baby upon hatching. Mix nesting is not recommended due to this, but can be fun if everyone agrees to be nice!
With Roe, those eggs can hatch where ever they want underwater as they don't need a nest to incubate. Once a creature that lays Roe finishes mating, the eggs can be laid immediately, skipping the gather nest materials quest. But once a carnivore begins to eat the egg, the egg becomes unhatchable. If the Roe is taken out of the water, incubation pauses until it enters water again. Land nests cannot be laid underwater, and mammals cannot birth underwater (Unless it is an fully aquatic mammal, which in that case will need to have a separate birthing system)
If a player claimed egg is waiting to be born, but is eaten by a carnivore, the death screen will display and take them back to character selection much like if they were to die normally, but they won't lose anything.
Herbivores cannot eat eggs.
Eggs count as MEAT so Omnivores who have Meat as an option in their diet tab can eat eggs. If an egg is larger then half of a Scavengers body size, they cannot eat the eggs at all, because they cant pick them up. This is to prevent smaller faster dinosaurs from one-biting eggs to make them unhatchable, because that's mean and annoying and people will definitely do it. Eggs can ONLY be eaten if they are picked up first.
It is absolutely possible for a Thalassodromeus to swipe a Deinonychus egg and put them in their own nest. Don't let your kids get dino-napped! Who knows what will happen to them...they could just be food for the rest of the Thaloss nest! Or, the Thaloss plans to raise the Deino as one of her own...who knows? Roe cannot be put inside land nests, and land eggs cannot be put underwater with Roe. The incubation simply stops. Birth bundles will drown if underwater for too long. Mammals should avoid giving birth in areas with shallow water, so that the baby doesn't drown. The only reason to steal roe out of the water is for a snack, but if an aquatic is smart, she'll lay her eggs deep in the ocean where even some semi-aquatics can't get to.
That about does it for the Nesting update and what I would like to see out of it once it comes around!

I wanted to make a new post thanking the people who left their constructive criticism. I immediately applied these things and I guess it really helped me.

I posted on this reddit 5d ago about "being a challenger (stats) Miss Fortune" not being able to get out of Gold IV despite my amazing KDA every game (post removed now). I wanted to make a new post thanking the people who left their constructive criticism. I immediately applied these things and I guess it really helped me.
- Look at your map. I thought I was doing this but when you actually start focusing on the map it makes a huge difference. I started calling out loud where the JungleMid Laner was, and knew I could take more risks in my lane.
- Secure the dragon and make sure your recalls are not putting a free dragon into the enemy's hands. If Mid can help, your jungler is on your side, and you've backed and shopped, then a dragon is possible. This is also where you can be a leader and ping your team towards dragon.
- Ping your intentions to your teammates. I like to spam "on the way" multiple times before im about to make a play or if I am about to be there to change the course of a fight.
- Control your emotions.
- Do not tilt
- Do not judge your teammates' selection of champions. This game can be severely ironic in low elos and there have been SEVERAL games that I've won with Master Yi mid, Blitzcrank jungle, etc. So LET YOUR TEAMMATES COOK!
- One-trick a champion.
- Make sure you position yourself correctly during a fight.
Things I have to work on:
- CS mid-late game. I tend to fall behind the "10 CS a minute" (And so does the enemy ADC).
- I tend to have a lot of kills anyway so that makes up for falling slightly behind on CS? :)
- Stupid use of summoner spells and keeping track of enemy summoner spells
- Roaming after I've pushed my lane

Any idea what's wrong here?
I have Xfinity's 1.2 G plan. Speedtest only reaches between 750-810 Mbps. When I go into my Netgear CM2000 modem settings it says Connection Status Poor. When I click on it this info shows:

I have Xfinity's 1.2 G plan. Speedtest only reaches between 750-810 Mbps. When I go into my Netgear CM2000 modem settings it says Connection Status Poor. When I click on it this info shows:

Hi everyone. Here today I present you with a theory of mine that I came up with about a week ago and I wanted to share with the community to get your thoughts on it.
This one is in regards to the FNAF movie teaser, and is about the single most spectacular thing from it which is the Freddy head with the spinning saws in it. What is it? What's it's significance? That's what I aim to solve with this theory here today.
Before I start I wanted to say that I came up with this theory while watching MatPat's analysis of the teaser. This theory is my own, but it was inspired and thought up while watching his analysis and listening to his theories about the teaser. Now to get into it.
I think that when most people saw this Freddy head torture device along with the torture chair that the night guard gets strapped down to, people were not sure what to make of it. First off this theory is going to relate to the phone calls from the phone guy in FNAF 1. It's very reasonable to believe that the person getting strapped to the chair in the trailer is not "Mike", but is the second security guard we see in the trailer. The one we see screaming as the camera which is supposedly some animatronic threat closing in on him. This is because, while we do see Mike also end up in the chair somehow as from the shot where he's pulling back from the device, we know that the other security guard also gets himself into the same situation because on the couple of shots where we see the metal restrainers hold down his wrist and his chest, we can see that the outfit the man is wearing is a lot more formal that Mike's fit from the trailer, and it identically matches the one of the security guard at the end of the trailer. Perhaps once whatever is making him scream in the teaser catches him there and brings him to the torture device.
Now why would the animatronics be doing that? I wanted to bring up something that most people in the community already know, but deserves some explanation, which are the red eyes of the animatronics. Now, in various points of the lore when an animatronic has red eyes it means that they are being controlled by someone, namely William Afton (The Silver Eyes book, Security Breach). I believe that what might be happening in the trailer is that at that point that security guard has some stake against William Afton or is put in some position where William either needs to get rid of him or has him no longer useful. Therefore, what he does is he sends one of the animatronics after him to capture him and take him to the torture chair where his face will be shredded.
Now, that leads me to the main part of this post of what all of this means to the story. First let's go back to FNAF 1 and recall some things to the table. As we know in FNAF 1 the phone guy tells you that once you get caught by the animatronics they'll force you into one of the spare suits and you die. At the time of hearing that years ago in that game it's a very creepy thing, but now in modern FNAF it's a concept that is left in the past and never talked about anymore. FNAF 1 is the only game where when you lose the animatronics "stuff you in a suit" as supposed to just killing you. Every other animatronic in all the other games just attack you. FNAF 2 the Toys lash out at you because they think you're a criminal. FNAF 3 Springtrap just kills you because he's Springtrap. The Funtimes are essentially made to kill. But the concept of being stuffed is never brought up again. What happens when you get stuffed? Why does being stuffed cause your eyeballs and teeth to pop out of the mask? If you think about that last question it doesn't really make total sense. How would pressure from an animatronic pushing you're head into a suit cause your eyes and teeth to pop out of your face. It's a scary concept, but doesn't make total sense. What if the animatronics bring you to the back room and when you get "stuffed" into a suit, and they put the Freddy head on you, it's actually this torture device from the movie teaser? What if the saws inside the Freddy head that spice up it's victim's face is what actually causes your eyeballs and teeth to conceptually "pop" out the front of the mask? That's what I think we are seeing in the movie teaser. We are seeing what actually happens when the animatronics catch you. And of course the animatronics are filled with rage being the hostile souls of children, but it's such a specific action for them to stuff you into a Freddy suit when they catch you. Again like I said FNAF 1 is the only game where that concept is mentioned and they do that. That's why in order for them to do this William Afton is controlling them and makes them bring the victim to the torture device to have their face sliced off. Why would he do this? It's because William is collecting remnant. We've seen him make use of killer robots before in the series with Sister Location, so why not with these animatronics too? Before I wrap this part up I want to clear up that the animatronics are of course possessed and angry. They will definitely be looking around for Mike in the movie wanting to lash out at him with their rageful spirits, but in order to do this oddly specific action in putting whoever they catch into their torture device AKA "getting stuffed in a Freddy suit" then William Afton would have to be influencing them and making them do that.
Finally, the last part and maybe the most interesting part of my theory is this. Who is that second security guard? Who is the guy we see get strapped down to the torture chair? Well, what if this man is the one and only Phone Guy from FNAF 1? My reason for believing this is as follows. Judging by the movie teaser we know that he get's himself into the chair sooner or later as I described above. Whether he dies or doesn't is unclear, but I'm going to explain why I think he will. As we know the Phone Guy in FNAF 1 is the one who tells you what happens when you get stuff inside a Freddy suit. Later on in the game in the night 4 phone call he dies as his shift that night hadn't gone well. However, listen to what he says before he's about to die - "I always wondered what was in those empty heads... back there..." When FNAF 1 first came out people could see this line as a throw away scary line meaning that he's pondering there being human heads or corpses inside the empty heads and costumes in the back. But what if that's not the case? What if the on the brink of death the Phone Guy is actually strapped down to the torture chair we see in the teaser making his final voice recording as he's looking into what REALLY inside the empty Freddy heads? It's not some human head corpse or other haunted figure. It's a torture device made by William Afton for collecting remnant! What if William Afton had sent the animatronics to the Phone Guy that night after Phone Guy had been getting a little too curious and aware of what had been going on, and found out about the little incite and information he was sneaking into his voice memos for future employers; giving them tips about things he shouldn't have even known? Phone Guy was too smart for the job and was becoming very aware, so William Afton had to get rid of him. So when Phone Guy was killed, he was killed by this William Afton made torture device for collecting remnant after the William sent animatronics captured him, and so he also found out what was really inside the empty Freddy Fazbear heads on the night he died.

California, 4-unit building, condos.
I'm new to this sub so I apologize if I shouldn't be posting this question. (I looked at the sub guidelines and searched the sub, etc.)
Our HOA has 4 members, 1 for each unit. One member is hard to deal with and I'm worried he's going to do something destructive. Here's the situation:
He owned the entire building before he converted to condos. He sold 3 of the units and kept 1 unit for himself.
He privately owns a free-standing garage on the property. There are laundry facilities in the garage (washer, dryer, sink, water heater.) When he sold to us, he gave us an easement to use the laundry facilities. His own unit has a washedryer within the unit itself.
He had installed 3 cupboards in the garage for laundry supplies, one assigned to each of our units. He verbally told us that the garage laundry was for our exclusive use, and his unit would use its own washedryer.
The first year we owned our condos, we had to replace the washedryer, sink, and water heater. We also had to make repairs to the garage door. He asked us to pay all these costs ourselves instead of through the HOA because the laundry facilities were for our exclusive use. We agreed and have paid for all maintenance expenses, too.
When he sold, he never installed an electric meter for the common area, which includes the garage laundry. The laundry electric bill is on his own meter. We have a gas dryer, so his cost is very small. He has always wanted us to reimburse him, which we are happy to do. But he wants $60 a month, which seems too high. He has never shown us any of his electric bills, has never actually billed us, and won't discuss a smaller amount.
As an aside, there is one gas meter that the HOA pays the bill for. His unit is the only unit with a gas heater, which costs the HOA about $1,000 extra per year just to heat his unit. We've brought it up to him and are considering charging him, but that's its own can of worms we'd like to avoid.
The sales documents and CC&Rs weren't clear enough, so after 10 years (and him refusing to pay his dues or let us use the laundry facilities at all) we finally had to go to mediation to get this resolved. The mediation ruling, though, still isn't very clear. It forced him to pay his dues and gave us the right to use the facilities, but said we should figure out the electricity costs on our own. The ruling also didn't specify that our use is exclusive. We didn't realize that would become an important point.
So now we have two problems:

We have a gas dryer, so his cost is very small. He has always wanted us to reimburse him, which we are happy to do. But he wants $60 a month, which seems too high. He has never shown us any of his electric bills, has never actually billed us, and won't discuss a smaller amount.
As an aside, there is one gas meter that the HOA pays the bill for. His unit is the only unit with a gas heater, which costs the HOA about $1,000 extra per year just to heat his unit. We've brought it up to him and are considering charging him, but that's its own can of worms we'd like to avoid.
The sales documents and CC&Rs weren't clear enough, so after 10 years (and him refusing to pay his dues or let us use the laundry facilities at all) we finally had to go to mediation to get this resolved. The mediation ruling, though, still isn't very clear. It forced him to pay his dues and gave us the right to use the facilities, but said we should figure out the electricity costs on our own. The ruling also didn't specify that our use is exclusive. We didn't realize that would become an important point.
So now we have two problems:
- He's rented out his unit and lets his tenants use our laundry facilities. His unit is very large, and he rents to groups of 6 to 12 college students. We've asked him to limit the number to 6, but he doesn't always comply. Our units only have 3 people. So the facilities now have triple the number of users, which means it's harder to find a time when they're free and also means that the wear and tear is 3 times as much. Also, his tenants have broken two dryer filters so far. In the past, they ruined a washer which we had to replace. He wouldn't pay for the damage, claiming that we couldn't prove it was his tenants. (We've since installed a security camera.)
- We still haven't been able to agree on how much we should pay for electricity. Installing a new meter is cost-prohibitive, so that's not a solution. This is a smaller problem, though, because I think we'd be willing to pay the $60 just to avoid more hassle.
- He temporarily turned off the electricity. That also meant that the common area and staircase were without lights, which was unsafe.
- He is now threatening to remove the washedryer, which we own.
- How do we enforce the mediator's ruling?
- How do we protect ourselves against his retaliation, like stealing our washedryer or turning off our common area electricity?

Corva fiddled with an empty medicine bottle, he looked at the labels and peeled them, only to stick it on the bottle again, he would screw off the cap and screw it back on repeatedly. It was an old habit of his, just looking at random things and playing with them like a fidget toy, he only does it when he has nothing to do, ever since he got a job that habit disappeared, but now, all he can do is lay down on the bed of a hospital tent, and he's also technically currently unemployed. Since no company is going to recruit anyone in the middle of an invasion from killer robots. He thought back to what happened yesterday, when Lavoss came into the tent and confronted Kawl.
"You're still awake?"
"Hmm?"
He was still curious about it, what did Lavoss mean by traitor? Did Kawl kill someone? He doesn't look like someone who would do such a thing, whatever it was that he did though, it was significant enough for Lavoss to hit him in the head with the stock of his gun knocking him out cold. It was shocking to see, he was awfully calm up until the point he said something about the traitor part and not a moment later Kawl was on the ground unconscious with a gun stock shaped dent on the chitin protecting his head. Everyone gasped, except Mari, the nurse, she looked like she expected it for a long time and stayed calm.
"Do you have trouble sleeping?"
She asked as she came back with another box of medical supplies.
"No, just… didn't feel like it"
"What do you mean you don't feel like sleeping?"
She put the box down and walked up to him.
"Well… i got plenty of sleep yesterday, spent the rest of it sleeping, didn't i? And most of today as well"
"With all due respect that doesn't justify staying up until the middle of the night, besides, you need rest"
"Same thing can be said about you… I haven't seen you take any kind of break, even the doctor's not here, why are you?"
"The downside of being the only qualified nurse left around, not the only one in the camp of course, just the only one left for this tent, besides… it's my duty to watch over the patients, and make sure they have enough sleep…"
She raised her voice a little on that last word, as well as throwing a glance at other patients that were already asleep.
"Subtle…"
"Right i am, now sleep"
"I've tried, i don't think i can"
"So you do have trouble sleeping, hold on, i think i have something for that in stock"
"No thanks, can we just… talk? It's been some time since I've had a friendly talk with anyone, just… Not about anything in particular, you know? Just talk"
"Hmm… fine, when was the last time then?"
"Right before the invasion… right before he lost his life…"
"Let's… not talk about that…"

"Uhm… What's your job?"
"QC, for quality control, in an arms factory"
"A factory worker? You looked way cleaner than i thought you would"
"If i were working in the assembly i think you would change your mind about that, but no, QC's don't get their hand dirty often, maybe once in a while when a weapon explodes on them"
"Huh… ever had one?"
"Personally? No, have I seen it? Yes, funny story, when i first got accepted i had this instructor, telling us how to check the quality of products, the first rifle he picked up to show us how to check the pulse had a faulty wiring on it, too much energy, it blew up on his face while a group of new QC's was watching, safe to say he doesn't like it when some of us laughed"
"Poor guy, Reminded of someone"

"Oh i…"
"Oh don't worry, it's nothing sensitive, it's like your story, she's a teacher, been one for a while even before she got here, so when she got here to Rosan she was considered a senior teacher, and when new ones needs a tour of their workplace and know how to handle the kids they relied on her, now one day she was guiding a new teacher…"
"Mhm?"
"And she was like… maybe she wants to show off a little bit, I don't know, but from what she told me, she said to this new teacher something along the lines of: 'look at these children! So behaved! If you want to do that you have to learn from me' or something like that… and… not a second after that, one of the kids who were playing threw a wet ball of paper and it hit her right in the back of the head"
Corva had to spend some willpower trying not to laugh, remembering that he was the one who laughed when his instructor blew himself up along with Kasso didn't make it any easier.
"Oh the look of embarrassment on her face, didn't see it myself, but i wish i did, i can feel her esteem crumble every time i mention it, it was cute to see her just shrink and try to hide her face"
"Oh… you'll like it when you see how my friend acts around girls, Kasso, he…"
Mari was a bit confused why Corva suddenly fell silent, why he looked at the ground with a frown, until she remembered what he said, and it clicked on her.
Right before he lost his life
"I'm sorry for your loss"
"It's fine, i'm sure he's in a better place… much better than this… hellhole"
She wanted to comment on his sudden pessimism, but decided that won't be so wise considering he's not wrong, no matter how many times she tries to ignore it, she has to admit, their current situation is a hellhole.
"I suppose that's enough talk for now…"
"...."
"I advise you sleep now, you'll get tired"
He didn't respond, and just went to sleep without another word, and an unchanged expression of sorrow. She sighed and returned to her work, sorting the type of medications into different containers.
"When will it all end?"

It was calm… and black… that is about all Schen can think about regarding his current state, he can't tell if he's dreaming, or if he's asleep or awake, it's just that he is aware. It was a strange feeling, like being asleep physically but not mentally, he feels like he's floating, without a body, like there's nothing that can limit him. And yet at the same time he can't do anything, he was just aware, and drifting away in this weird state of half dream. For some reason, he thought of those tales of people who 'died' , people who experienced long comas, and the tale of their supposed journey to this place between the mind and the world.
Ridiculous stories, barely believable, and uninteresting if you ask him. And yet, here he is now, aware of what's happening, he remembers everything, he passed out from blood loss, after fighting one of those things. He wants to wake up, check on his men, maybe meet up with Captain Vaiya and make up a plan on what to do next regarding their situation. But you can't wake up when you don't even have control over your eyes, so it was more of a waiting game, an annoying one, knowing what's happening and yet can't act on it. He'd rather be actually dead over this, at least if he's dead he doesn't have to worry about anything. The problem is, he knows he's alive, it's just that his body is not responding to him, nor can he feel it.
It took what felt like hours, since he wasn't actually asleep, he was paralyzed but still conscious. After an agonizing few hours, he felt the first bodily sensation, his finger, it graduated to the feeling of his hand resting on a soft surface, probably some sort of bed, he can feel his breath as well. He started feeling his body, little by little, unfortunately, now that he feels his body again, he can feel what his body feels, and that is pure unadulterated pain. On his head, on his leg, his back, his arm, everywhere, he doesn't remember getting hit that much, but apparently he did. His back arched from trying to suppress it, and he let out a grunt that was too loud for his standard.
"Calm down! Don't move just yet…"
A voice, good, that means he should be in a friendly area now. He opened one of his eyes with a considerable amount of struggle, and saw the face of an Enovian with a waterproof paramedic hat on through his blurry vision.
"I've had worse…"
What a word for him to say before his back gave up on him and suddenly went limp, triggering pain in many areas of his body.
"Aergh…"
He grunted with some exasperation and regret. Maybe he shouldn't be showing off at this kind of age, it's not good for his bones.
"Where's our painkillers?"

"He's awake"
"Just? or?..."
"For awhile, he needed some time to actually get up, thought we'll just wait for him before telling you"
"Alright, thank you, i'll be there, a wonder he survived though, and to wake up this early"
"It is, his wounds were near fatal, he was essentially one light tap away from a fractured skull"
"Tough little guy… you can go now, there are others no?"
"Oh…yes, sorry ma'am"
Vaiya turned off her personal datapad, and stood up from her command seat. She dusted some metal dust off her uniform and made her way to the recruitment office turned into a temporary medical bay. She walked through a collection of the remaining crew of the ship, some simply threw a glance at her, some greeted her, and some gave her a salute. She noted the look of despair in their eyes and sighed, but kept on walking as that isn't her goal right now. She arrived at a door with a plate next to it that says: 'recruitment', the plate had an electrical tape with a writing on it that says: 'medical bay now' stuck haphazardly on top of it.
It isn't a neon sign, but it works. She opened the door manually with her hand as most of the doors in administration are now unpowered, inside was simple, four 'beds' laid on the floor, with most of the desks removed, the remaining medical crews stay here now, treating anyone they can. Including the new security captain, Schon, who she spotted sitting on his bed half awake wrapped in blood caked bandages, while clearly struggling to drink from a glass cup. He looked oddly… calm, like he's not surprised he's here at all. Granted, she did rescue him from becoming minced meat, and it's only logical to assume there are survivors holding out somewhere, but he looks absolutely unfazed, as if he had this happen before.
"SC Schon?"
She walked up to him, he gave an unsurprised look and went back to doing his best to drink.
"Captain…"
"Nice to see you awake already, i figured it would take a long time but you prove me wrong…"
"Uh-huh…."
"About that status report you ask for-"
"I already know, stranded, no engine, almost all crew dead, ship's practically scrapped, light's dying, and surrounded by killer machines chewing on the hull, and Rosan IV isn't so lucky either"
"Yes… unfortunate is it?"
"Yes, but right now I don't care, how's my men?"
"Your what?"
"My subordinates"
"Ah… they're… few, 50… down to you and two others, i'm sorry"
"I see… who?"
"Koern, and Ayuna"
Schen wasn't paying much attention to the captain, he simply stared off into the distance, but hearing the young Caevit's name roll off her tongue took his attention.
"Really?... Thank you, but you're not here just for that right?"
Now that he actually pays some attention to her, he noticed her face change, a bit more tense.
"You read my mind, come"
"I can barely move my lips and you want me to walk?"
She looks around for a minute before looking back at him.
"I don't mind carrying someone"
"Huh?"

"If i have credit for every time a Tekit lady carries me in her arms while i can barely move, i'll have two"
Schen commented on his current position, it earned him a confused and curious look from the captain. She took him to an uninhabited room to talk, as it turns out most of the administration has been turned to some sort of holdout for whoever's left alive in the ship. She set him down on a chair and followed suit, sitting right in front of him.
"So what is this? Is there something you want to know? If it's about this whole thing then you're talking to a wall"
Her behavior was odd, Schen noted, she seems… agitated, not angry, just stirred, like something's bugging her. He can understand being scared, but the way she moves suggests whatever's currently happening isn't the case.
"Nothing much… i just want… confirmation"
"Go ahead…"
"So… I heard that Koern asked you for help, is that so?"
"Yeah? Got to me after he said you can't help"
"Do you know what his issue was?"
"Yes, random images and voice recordings from his cousin"
"Okay… where does his cousin lives?"
"In Rosan IV and from what i heard, it's about as messed up as this ship"
"That is correct, do you-"
"Wait, can we just get to the point here? What's the issue? Why are you suddenly interested in Koern's problem?"
"I… because…"
"Hmm?"
"...Because i've been having the same problem, what you said, random images, and voice recordings, now i know it's exactly the same, that is what i want to know"
"Huh… okay… so?..."
"There's one difference… his problem started today, during the jump, my problem has been going on for the last five cycles"
"....."
"And I want to know one more thing, please, answer this honestly… do you see it?"
He can feel her agitation increase tenfold as she asks the question. She was normal, now she's visibly shaking.
"See what?..."
"The shape…"
"Shape?"
"Please tell me you saw it too, i… I've been thinking about it… for a long time… ever since I've peered into those images, there's a shape stuck in my eyes, it's burned itself into my mind, and I feel it…. Everyday i think i see something in the corner of my eyes, i hear noises that aren't there, closer and closer every time!…. It… it was getting closer… the shape…"
Her stare became intense, like the stare of a crazed person.
"i… don't know…"
"Oh but you know! You saw it!... Just as I did… it sees you, but you can barely see it, it's there… watching… First it stays in the image, then it creeps into you, haunts you, then you see it hide everytime you turn your head… it follows you, everywhere you go… in your sleep… when you work… all the time…"
Her breathing was rapid, almost uncontrolled.
"Perhaps… that's just you, i do not experience these"
"It may not now, but it will…. Because it has to me, it's like a tumor, and it won't go away, no matter how hard i try… it's still there…"
She calmed down slightly, her breathing was normal again, sort of, and she's no longer shaking, but the stare is still there, the stare of true fear, striking deep into his soul. As she calmed down more and thankfully finally averted her gaze elsewhere, Schen took the downtime to process what he just listened to, and his conclusion was: what the ////?
"Sorry… i… i just… i needed to know… i need to know if i'm not the only one… now i know it's in you too, not now, but soon, t-thank you"
"Your… welcome…"
"Should we return?"
"We…"
He pondered about asking her to take him to the bridge, so he can look out and see what's happening outside the ship, but now he's reconsidering it, because of that… experience.
"...Yes, we should"
She let go of his arms, he didn't even realize it, but she was holding on to him tight the whole time.
"Of course… of course, let's make this quick…"

Schen observed Captain Vaiya as she left the medical room, he noted her sudden return to her previous well mannered behavior, he can still see a tinge of anxiety in her eyes and movements however, and realized how similar it was to Koern's behavior. Anxiety, unease, massive discomfort, moving around constantly, and eyes snapping to random positions as if they're trying to catch something on the move. It was unmistakable, Schen recalled back to his conversation with Koern, about something he said.
'it's… distressing'
Koern did look at the images before coming to him, and it was clear the images caused it, if Vaiya had something similar or identical happen, he can assume the cause for her distress is the same. But one question remains that still baffles him: how? How do random images do that? Implanting irrational fear into someone, making them see things that aren't there, what is happening? And now that he considers it, he did see the images, is he going to fall victim to the same thing? Why hasn't he felt anything if those images can do that to someone through just a mere look at it?
One question leads to another, and it all gets more complicated the longer he tries to solve it. He wanted to ignore it, maybe they were just unstable and he misjudged the whole thing, but he can't help but feel there's something to it, it's clear those images and recordings somehow were sent by the creatures currently roaming the ship, he sees the connection, but why? And how? Psychological warfare? Maybe, that was the most rational answer he could come up with. With their clear situation of being in the middle of an invasion, he can only assume such an answer, but applying it to only a few specific targets seems beyond strange.
He pinched his snout in frustration, before taking a deep breath and exhaling it as slowly as he could. Perhaps he shouldn't think of it too much for now, maybe that's how it gets into you, the shape… whatever it is. He looked around his surroundings, a 'medical' room, previously an office, he watched the doctors treat the wounded as he thought of his next step. Looking outside the ship should be a good idea, he had asked a nurse about the whole situation before Vaiya showed up, they told him the entire star system has fallen, Rosan IV was silent, any attempts at communication and call for help were futile, the other planets around the system, some are yet to be named, are the same.
That means those things have been here for a while, and somehow stayed out of the union's radar. He remembered the emerging stories of Rosan IV, how it became a ghost, how communications were far and few between, how many ships that traveled to its system went missing and ones that returned had signs of heavy damage on them, and how their crews looked 'lifeless'. If Rosan's system has been like this for some time, wouldn't that mean any ship that comes here would suffer the same fate as his ship?.
Why would some return and look 'fine' was beyond him, but a thought nestled itself in his mind, a terrifying thought, it made his blood run cold, the thought that these things have spread beyond this solar system, spread silently, in cargo ships that travel to every corner of union space. Suddenly people seeing shapes and hearing sounds after they look at an image doesn't sound horrifying anymore.

Faen sat in his office, for the millionth time, he stared at his computer, for the millionth time, he opened the files containing the Qrid military spending, for the millionth time, he looked at the reports file, for the millionth time. It has always been like this, being a general wasn't all about giving orders and making war plans, most of his time was spent in front of his computer, looking at the passive activity of his army, and its spendings, receiving calls or calling someone to see if he can learn something new about someone else's army. Look at pirate reports, raiders, terrorists, radicalist, sometimes cultists, it has always been like this, looking away at the computer, looking at files, always has been.
He wouldn't say he couldn't make wartime decisions, if one were to ever occur, he's always confident he can, after all he has learned from both his father and many mentors. He trained for it, for war, he trained how to control an army in such a situation for pretty much his whole life, he doesn't have to, but it's better to know how to fight than not at all. You never know when it'll come, maybe now, maybe in years during your old days, maybe never, but if it ever does come, he knows what to do, whether he likes it or not. It's a part of his pride, his identity, though he couldn't say much about his son, and everyday he worries about not having a successor, not having someone to pass the torch to, and as time marches on indiscriminately, his worry can only grow.
Sometimes he wondered if should've been harsh, and not fulfill his wish to go to university so he can learn computer science, and put him in the very school he himself went through to become what he is now. But that's not a good father, isn't it? It would be against his wish, and he would've needed to force him, it's what his son's grandfather did… to him, he still thinks about it, about his original dream. A singer, a far cry from a supreme general, he remembered the angry face of his father upon learning what he wanted to be, it felt like it happened just yesterday. He never liked it, not once, despite managing to prove himself worthy as a leader of an army in the end of everything.
And to think, he was almost like that, to his own son, he couldn't handle the thought. Faen took his eyes off the screen, just for a moment, and looked at another one, a camera display, showing his son's room. Rana was sleeping, as usual and as he should be at a time like this, he looked at him through the screen, at his arm, and thought about his latest conversation with the woman he loved.
"Disappointment, huh?"
He felt a subtle pain in his chest out of nowhere, he opened the drawer on his desk through a motion that tells of excessive habit, and absentmindedly took his medication without looking. With a sigh, he looked at a small button to his right. There was a screen above it that had a list of people considered significant enough to be contacted by him directly, which ranged from the supreme generals of other species, to the head maiden that cleaned his and his son's bedroom. He looked for a specific one that he recently added, the surgeon that is the head of operation for the trials he had put Rana through for the last few cycles, the trials that he and his mother show complete disapproval to.
He found it and clicked the button, it was answered after some time and he entered a call with the surgeon.
"A pleasure to speak with you general"
"Hrm…"
"Is there something you wish to ask of me?"
"Yes… we should stop, no more trials"
"If that is what you want, then I will gladly comply, but may I ask why for the sudden stop? You seem invested in this when you first called me to arrange it"
"Family issues"

He cut the call short, and continued his work. Looking at the files, looking for differences every so often, making sure everything is stable and taken care of, and glancing at his son's monitor once in a while, and for the first time since his son graduated university, he smiled. Perhaps that's the right thing, to be a father, not a general. At least… for a moment, his smile disappeared as he received a call, it was marked as urgent, and was displayed on his screen instead of just a sound notification. He dusted his uniform and fixed any creases as he noticed the call wasn't just any call, it was a notice for him to join a discussion between supreme generals of each species and their respective leaders, that includes the matriarch.
It is odd he wasn't notified of this earlier, oftentimes these kinds of things have their own schedule that was discussed beforehand, a sudden meeting like this can only mean one thing. He accepted the call, and his screen changed to the display he's all too familiar with, a digital conference room, two lines of camera display, the bottom for the generals, the top for the leaders, they were all present, which is to be expected. The matriarch of Qrids, the Tekit queen, the Caevitan allfather, high empress of Enovia, and the Civean president, the current roster of union council, below them was him, and other generals, including general Cynte of the Civeans.
He still remembers his little offer to make an accident to highlight Rana's name, after the reveal of the Goels and the incident it was kept as a private thing between them that didn't really go anywhere. He doesn't want to talk about it, neither does Cynte, so it was technically a win-win situation, despite the unexpected and frankly out of their favor results. The call was oddly silent, no one was saying anything even the loud ones like his mother, they seemed to be waiting for something, or someone. Faen didn't question it, it would be considered stupid, so he too followed the silence. It was a strange and awkward few minutes of staring at each other not saying anything, up until what they waited for arrived in the call.
Another screen appeared above all ten screens, and on it was something he dreaded to see, the collection of red revolving rings, Cain. Practically every general present felt tense, including him, the leaders couldn't care less, except maybe for the Civean president who expressed the most worry as they all waited for Cain to speak. Sudden meeting, all members, and Cain, and considering their latest development with the Goels, this couldn't be good. The red rings assemble into the shape of a solar system like it did when it appeared on the monitors of his warship, and Cain spoke with his usual low pitched synthesized voice that everyone in the room knew quite well.
'it is no doubt all of you will question why I requested this urgent meeting, i apologize if any of you found it to be too sudden, but what I have to tell you will change your mind, and I will not waste your time, as we are in a race against time itself… the union has been breached by an invader, you are under attack, and in a process of galaxy wide invasion'
No, definitely not good.
"What do you mean by this?"
Faen immediately asked, as much as he distrust Cain, he must agree with his mindset that no time should be wasted. And it seems his question stopped a particular set of leaders trying to speak, stopping them from blurting out what are probably4 going to be pointless sarcastic remarks, so that was another benefit of speaking first.
'your union is currently under the invasion of a race that is arguably similar to me, we call them Shakran'
The display of red rings changed to a scrolling collection of images, images of… Faen doesn't know how to describe it, bipedal creatures, made of metal, and grossly disfigured bodies, with sharp claws and many eyes. Every single thing varies, some of the things in the images looked small and only had claws, some were massive and had what are clearly cannons as a weapon. He noted a certain detail about the images, they were blurry, and not straight, and some strange things were staring at the camera, while looking elsewhere. Something tells Faen these images were taken in the middle of active combat.
'They are a hivemind of machines, their sentience and sapience is debatable, but that does matter currently as their only goal is to destroy and conquer'
"Lies! If we were under an invasion from them, we would've known already! Besides… we already have an invader… we're talking to them right now"
The Tekit queen spoke with clear passive aggresive energy in her voice. Faen sighed in annoyance but kept it to himself.
'i understand the distrust, but it is no reason to make a sarcastic remark, however, you need to trust me on this matter, because their return can only mean danger to the union, and the universe as a whole, they are-'
"Wait, what do you mean… their return?"
'you all must've wondered how and why i and my brother ended up the way we did on that desert planet, what you are seeing on my screen is the answer to your question'
It didn't click for any of the leaders, their annoyed expression stays the same as Cain finished his sentence, but it clicked for every single military leader in the room, and it horrified them.
'my kind have encountered them before, my creators, it led to a war, a million year war, between me and them, they are what wiped my creators out of existence, and soon will be the cause of extinction for every single species in this union if we don't take any actions, since you refused, i have personally tracked every ship that left Rosan IV for the last six cycles, here is the data'
The scrolling images turned into a detailed map of the galaxy, with every single star system currently under union control included in it, there were red lines all over the map, they were all traced back all the way to one specific system, Rosan IV. A heavy weight rested itself on Schen's mind as he realized how far the lines have gone, to a point it crosses itself, wrapping around the galaxy in a circle, like some sort of a chaotic web.
'Rosan is lost, it is highly likely they have turned it into a staging ground, i know that we all have strived to avoid this, but war is inevitable, i have send a complete data regarding the Shakrans to all of you, please review it as fast as you can, and take your moves, as i will mine right now, alert your fleets, if they see my fleet entering a system, tell them they are here as an ally, i have been defeated once, i will not repeat the same mistake again, i hope you can catch up and help me, because there is no telling of what they will do once their setup is complete, and there is no telling whether or not i can do this alone'
"Wait! What should we do?"
'search and destroy, hunt down every ship that left the system, check every station, scan every inch of space, detonate stations, evacuate every planet they have visited then purge the cities and hammer the surface with orbital strikes if you might, but by all means… do not let. them. develop. That is all i have to say, my reinforcements are coming, but i do not know if there is enough time, act now'

Corva fiddled with an empty medicine bottle, he looked at the labels and peeled them, only to stick it on the bottle again, he would screw off the cap and screw it back on repeatedly. It was an old habit of his, just looking at random things and playing with them like a fidget toy, he only does it when he has nothing to do, ever since he got a job that habit disappeared, but now, all he can do is lay down on the bed of a hospital tent, and he's also technically currently unemployed. Since no company is going to recruit anyone in the middle of an invasion from killer robots. He thought back to what happened yesterday, when Lavoss came into the tent and confronted Kawl.
"You're still awake?"
"Hmm?"
He was still curious about it, what did Lavoss mean by traitor? Did Kawl kill someone? He doesn't look like someone who would do such a thing, whatever it was that he did though, it was significant enough for Lavoss to hit him in the head with the stock of his gun knocking him out cold. It was shocking to see, he was awfully calm up until the point he said something about the traitor part and not a moment later Kawl was on the ground unconscious with a gun stock shaped dent on the chitin protecting his head. Everyone gasped, except Mari, the nurse, she looked like she expected it for a long time and stayed calm.
"Do you have trouble sleeping?"
She asked as she came back with another box of medical supplies.
"No, just… didn't feel like it"
"What do you mean you don't feel like sleeping?"
She put the box down and walked up to him.
"Well… i got plenty of sleep yesterday, spent the rest of it sleeping, didn't i? And most of today as well"
"With all due respect that doesn't justify staying up until the middle of the night, besides, you need rest"
"Same thing can be said about you… I haven't seen you take any kind of break, even the doctor's not here, why are you?"
"The downside of being the only qualified nurse left around, not the only one in the camp of course, just the only one left for this tent, besides… it's my duty to watch over the patients, and make sure they have enough sleep…"
She raised her voice a little on that last word, as well as throwing a glance at other patients that were already asleep.
"Subtle…"
"Right i am, now sleep"
"I've tried, i don't think i can"
"So you do have trouble sleeping, hold on, i think i have something for that in stock"
"No thanks, can we just… talk? It's been some time since I've had a friendly talk with anyone, just… Not about anything in particular, you know? Just talk"
"Hmm… fine, when was the last time then?"
"Right before the invasion… right before he lost his life…"

Yes, funny story, when i first got accepted i had this instructor, telling us how to check the quality of products, the first rifle he picked up to show us how to check the pulse had a faulty wiring on it, too much energy, it blew up on his face while a group of new QC's was watching, safe to say he doesn't like it when some of us laughed"

"Oh don't worry, it's nothing sensitive, it's like your story, she's a teacher, been one for a while even before she got here, so when she got here to Rosan she was considered a senior teacher, and when new ones needs a tour of their workplace and know how to handle the kids they relied on her, now one day she was guiding a new teacher…"

"And she was like… maybe she wants to show off a little bit, I don't know, but from what she told me, she said to this new teacher something along the lines of: 'look at these children! So behaved! Corva had to spend some willpower trying not to laugh, remembering that he was the one who laughed when his instructor blew himself up along with Kasso didn't make it any easier.
"Oh the look of embarrassment on her face, didn't see it myself, but i wish i did, i can feel her esteem crumble every time i mention it, it was cute to see her just shrink and try to hide her face"
"Oh… you'll like it when you see how my friend acts around girls, Kasso, he…"
Mari was a bit confused why Corva suddenly fell silent, why he looked at the ground with a frown, until she remembered what he said, and it clicked on her.
Right before he lost his life
"I'm sorry for your loss"
"It's fine, i'm sure he's in a better place… much better than this… hellhole"
She wanted to comment on his sudden pessimism, but decided that won't be so wise considering he's not wrong, no matter how many times she tries to ignore it, she has to admit, their current situation is a hellhole.
"I suppose that's enough talk for now…"

"I advise you sleep now, you'll get tired"
He didn't respond, and just went to sleep without another word, and an unchanged expression of sorrow. She sighed and returned to her work, sorting the type of medications into different containers.
"When will it all end?"

It was calm… and black… that is about all Schen can think about regarding his current state, he can't tell if he's dreaming, or if he's asleep or awake, it's just that he is aware. It was a strange feeling, like being asleep physically but not mentally, he feels like he's floating, without a body, like there's nothing that can limit him. And yet at the same time he can't do anything, he was just aware, and drifting away in this weird state of half dream. For some reason, he thought of those tales of people who 'died' , people who experienced long comas, and the tale of their supposed journey to this place between the mind and the world.
Ridiculous stories, barely believable, and uninteresting if you ask him. And yet, here he is now, aware of what's happening, he remembers everything, he passed out from blood loss, after fighting one of those things. He wants to wake up, check on his men, maybe meet up with Captain Vaiya and make up a plan on what to do next regarding their situation. But you can't wake up when you don't even have control over your eyes, so it was more of a waiting game, an annoying one, knowing what's happening and yet can't act on it. He'd rather be actually dead over this, at least if he's dead he doesn't have to worry about anything. The problem is, he knows he's alive, it's just that his body is not responding to him, nor can he feel it.
It took what felt like hours, since he wasn't actually asleep, he was paralyzed but still conscious. After an agonizing few hours, he felt the first bodily sensation, his finger, it graduated to the feeling of his hand resting on a soft surface, probably some sort of bed, he can feel his breath as well. He started feeling his body, little by little, unfortunately, now that he feels his body again, he can feel what his body feels, and that is pure unadulterated pain. On his head, on his leg, his back, his arm, everywhere, he doesn't remember getting hit that much, but apparently he did. His back arched from trying to suppress it, and he let out a grunt that was too loud for his standard.
"Calm down! Don't move just yet…"
A voice, good, that means he should be in a friendly area now. He opened one of his eyes with a considerable amount of struggle, and saw the face of an Enovian with a waterproof paramedic hat on through his blurry vision.
"I've had worse…"
What a word for him to say before his back gave up on him and suddenly went limp, triggering pain in many areas of his body.
"Aergh…"
He grunted with some exasperation and regret. Maybe he shouldn't be showing off at this kind of age, it's not good for his bones.
"Where's our painkillers?"

"He's awake"
"Just? or?..."
"For awhile, he needed some time to actually get up, thought we'll just wait for him before telling you"
"Alright, thank you, i'll be there, a wonder he survived though, and to wake up this early"
"It is, his wounds were near fatal, he was essentially one light tap away from a fractured skull"
"Tough little guy… you can go now, there are others no?"
"Oh…yes, sorry ma'am"
Vaiya turned off her personal datapad, and stood up from her command seat. She dusted some metal dust off her uniform and made her way to the recruitment office turned into a temporary medical bay. She walked through a collection of the remaining crew of the ship, some simply threw a glance at her, some greeted her, and some gave her a salute. She noted the look of despair in their eyes and sighed, but kept on walking as that isn't her goal right now. She arrived at a door with a plate next to it that says: 'recruitment', the plate had an electrical tape with a writing on it that says: 'medical bay now' stuck haphazardly on top of it.
It isn't a neon sign, but it works. She opened the door manually with her hand as most of the doors in administration are now unpowered, inside was simple, four 'beds' laid on the floor, with most of the desks removed, the remaining medical crews stay here now, treating anyone they can. Including the new security captain, Schon, who she spotted sitting on his bed half awake wrapped in blood caked bandages, while clearly struggling to drink from a glass cup. He looked oddly… calm, like he's not surprised he's here at all. Granted, she did rescue him from becoming minced meat, and it's only logical to assume there are survivors holding out somewhere, but he looks absolutely unfazed, as if he had this happen before.
"SC Schon?"
She walked up to him, he gave an unsurprised look and went back to doing his best to drink.
"Captain…"
"Nice to see you awake already, i figured it would take a long time but you prove me wrong…"
"Uh-huh…."
"About that status report you ask for-"
"I already know, stranded, no engine, almost all crew dead, ship's practically scrapped, light's dying, and surrounded by killer machines chewing on the hull, and Rosan IV isn't so lucky either"
"Yes… unfortunate is it?"
"Yes, but right now I don't care, how's my men?"
"Your what?"
"My subordinates"
"Ah… they're… few, 50… down to you and two others, i'm sorry"
"I see… who?"
"Koern, and Ayuna"
Schen wasn't paying much attention to the captain, he simply stared off into the distance, but hearing the young Caevit's name roll off her tongue took his attention.
"Really?... Thank you, but you're not here just for that right?"
Now that he actually pays some attention to her, he noticed her face change, a bit more tense.
"You read my mind, come"
"I can barely move my lips and you want me to walk?"
She looks around for a minute before looking back at him.
"I don't mind carrying someone"
"Huh?"

"If i have credit for every time a Tekit lady carries me in her arms while i can barely move, i'll have two"
Schen commented on his current position, it earned him a confused and curious look from the captain. She took him to an uninhabited room to talk, as it turns out most of the administration has been turned to some sort of holdout for whoever's left alive in the ship. She set him down on a chair and followed suit, sitting right in front of him.
"So what is this? Is there something you want to know? If it's about this whole thing then you're talking to a wall"
Her behavior was odd, Schen noted, she seems… agitated, not angry, just stirred, like something's bugging her. He can understand being scared, but the way she moves suggests whatever's currently happening isn't the case.
"Nothing much… i just want… confirmation"
"Go ahead…"
"So… I heard that Koern asked you for help, is that so?"
"Yeah? Got to me after he said you can't help"
"Do you know what his issue was?"
"Yes, random images and voice recordings from his cousin"
"Okay… where does his cousin lives?"
"In Rosan IV and from what i heard, it's about as messed up as this ship"
"That is correct, do you-"
"Wait, can we just get to the point here? What's the issue? Why are you suddenly interested in Koern's problem?"
"I… because…"
"Hmm?"
"...Because i've been having the same problem, what you said, random images, and voice recordings, now i know it's exactly the same, that is what i want to know"
"Huh… okay… so?..."
"There's one difference… his problem started today, during the jump, my problem has been going on for the last five cycles"

"And I want to know one more thing, please, answer this honestly… do you see it?"
He can feel her agitation increase tenfold as she asks the question. She was normal, now she's visibly shaking.
"See what?..."
"The shape…"
"Shape?"
"Please tell me you saw it too, i… I've been thinking about it… for a long time… ever since I've peered into those images, there's a shape stuck in my eyes, it's burned itself into my mind, and I feel it…. Everyday i think i see something in the corner of my eyes, i hear noises that aren't there, closer and closer every time!…. It… it was getting closer… the shape…"
Her stare became intense, like the stare of a crazed person.
"i… don't know…"
"Oh but you know! You saw it!... Just as I did… it sees you, but you can barely see it, it's there… watching… First it stays in the image, then it creeps into you, haunts you, then you see it hide everytime you turn your head… it follows you, everywhere you go… in your sleep… when you work… all the time…"
Her breathing was rapid, almost uncontrolled.
"Perhaps… that's just you, i do not experience these"
"It may not now, but it will…. Because it has to me, it's like a tumor, and it won't go away, no matter how hard i try… it's still there…"
She calmed down slightly, her breathing was normal again, sort of, and she's no longer shaking, but the stare is still there, the stare of true fear, striking deep into his soul. As she calmed down more and thankfully finally averted her gaze elsewhere, Schen took the downtime to process what he just listened to, and his conclusion was: what the ////?
"Sorry… i… i just… i needed to know… i need to know if i'm not the only one… now i know it's in you too, not now, but soon, t-thank you"
"Your… welcome…"
"Should we return?"
"We…"
He pondered about asking her to take him to the bridge, so he can look out and see what's happening outside the ship, but now he's reconsidering it, because of that… experience.
"...Yes, we should"
She let go of his arms, he didn't even realize it, but she was holding on to him tight the whole time.
"Of course… of course, let's make this quick…"

Schen observed Captain Vaiya as she left the medical room, he noted her sudden return to her previous well mannered behavior, he can still see a tinge of anxiety in her eyes and movements however, and realized how similar it was to Koern's behavior. Anxiety, unease, massive discomfort, moving around constantly, and eyes snapping to random positions as if they're trying to catch something on the move. It was unmistakable, Schen recalled back to his conversation with Koern, about something he said.
'it's… distressing'
Koern did look at the images before coming to him, and it was clear the images caused it, if Vaiya had something similar or identical happen, he can assume the cause for her distress is the same. But one question remains that still baffles him: how? How do random images do that? Implanting irrational fear into someone, making them see things that aren't there, what is happening? And now that he considers it, he did see the images, is he going to fall victim to the same thing? Why hasn't he felt anything if those images can do that to someone through just a mere look at it?
One question leads to another, and it all gets more complicated the longer he tries to solve it. He wanted to ignore it, maybe they were just unstable and he misjudged the whole thing, but he can't help but feel there's something to it, it's clear those images and recordings somehow were sent by the creatures currently roaming the ship, he sees the connection, but why? And how? Psychological warfare? Maybe, that was the most rational answer he could come up with. With their clear situation of being in the middle of an invasion, he can only assume such an answer, but applying it to only a few specific targets seems beyond strange.
He pinched his snout in frustration, before taking a deep breath and exhaling it as slowly as he could. Perhaps he shouldn't think of it too much for now, maybe that's how it gets into you, the shape… whatever it is. He looked around his surroundings, a 'medical' room, previously an office, he watched the doctors treat the wounded as he thought of his next step. Looking outside the ship should be a good idea, he had asked a nurse about the whole situation before Vaiya showed up, they told him the entire star system has fallen, Rosan IV was silent, any attempts at communication and call for help were futile, the other planets around the system, some are yet to be named, are the same.
That means those things have been here for a while, and somehow stayed out of the union's radar. He remembered the emerging stories of Rosan IV, how it became a ghost, how communications were far and few between, how many ships that traveled to its system went missing and ones that returned had signs of heavy damage on them, and how their crews looked 'lifeless'. If Rosan's system has been like this for some time, wouldn't that mean any ship that comes here would suffer the same fate as his ship?.
Why would some return and look 'fine' was beyond him, but a thought nestled itself in his mind, a terrifying thought, it made his blood run cold, the thought that these things have spread beyond this solar system, spread silently, in cargo ships that travel to every corner of union space. Suddenly people seeing shapes and hearing sounds after they look at an image doesn't sound horrifying anymore.

Faen sat in his office, for the millionth time, he stared at his computer, for the millionth time, he opened the files containing the Qrid military spending, for the millionth time, he looked at the reports file, for the millionth time. It has always been like this, being a general wasn't all about giving orders and making war plans, most of his time was spent in front of his computer, looking at the passive activity of his army, and its spendings, receiving calls or calling someone to see if he can learn something new about someone else's army. Look at pirate reports, raiders, terrorists, radicalist, sometimes cultists, it has always been like this, looking away at the computer, looking at files, always has been.
He wouldn't say he couldn't make wartime decisions, if one were to ever occur, he's always confident he can, after all he has learned from both his father and many mentors. He trained for it, for war, he trained how to control an army in such a situation for pretty much his whole life, he doesn't have to, but it's better to know how to fight than not at all. You never know when it'll come, maybe now, maybe in years during your old days, maybe never, but if it ever does come, he knows what to do, whether he likes it or not. It's a part of his pride, his identity, though he couldn't say much about his son, and everyday he worries about not having a successor, not having someone to pass the torch to, and as time marches on indiscriminately, his worry can only grow.
Sometimes he wondered if should've been harsh, and not fulfill his wish to go to university so he can learn computer science, and put him in the very school he himself went through to become what he is now. But that's not a good father, isn't it? It would be against his wish, and he would've needed to force him, it's what his son's grandfather did… to him, he still thinks about it, about his original dream. A singer, a far cry from a supreme general, he remembered the angry face of his father upon learning what he wanted to be, it felt like it happened just yesterday. He never liked it, not once, despite managing to prove himself worthy as a leader of an army in the end of everything.
And to think, he was almost like that, to his own son, he couldn't handle the thought. Faen took his eyes off the screen, just for a moment, and looked at another one, a camera display, showing his son's room. Rana was sleeping, as usual and as he should be at a time like this, he looked at him through the screen, at his arm, and thought about his latest conversation with the woman he loved.
"Disappointment, huh?"
He felt a subtle pain in his chest out of nowhere, he opened the drawer on his desk through a motion that tells of excessive habit, and absentmindedly took his medication without looking. With a sigh, he looked at a small button to his right. There was a screen above it that had a list of people considered significant enough to be contacted by him directly, which ranged from the supreme generals of other species, to the head maiden that cleaned his and his son's bedroom. He looked for a specific one that he recently added, the surgeon that is the head of operation for the trials he had put Rana through for the last few cycles, the trials that he and his mother show complete disapproval to.
He found it and clicked the button, it was answered after some time and he entered a call with the surgeon.
"A pleasure to speak with you general"
"Hrm…"
"Is there something you wish to ask of me?"
"Yes… we should stop, no more trials"
"If that is what you want, then I will gladly comply, but may I ask why for the sudden stop? You seem invested in this when you first called me to arrange it"
"Family issues"

He cut the call short, and continued his work. Looking at the files, looking for differences every so often, making sure everything is stable and taken care of, and glancing at his son's monitor once in a while, and for the first time since his son graduated university, he smiled. Perhaps that's the right thing, to be a father, not a general. At least… for a moment, his smile disappeared as he received a call, it was marked as urgent, and was displayed on his screen instead of just a sound notification. He dusted his uniform and fixed any creases as he noticed the call wasn't just any call, it was a notice for him to join a discussion between supreme generals of each species and their respective leaders, that includes the matriarch.
It is odd he wasn't notified of this earlier, oftentimes these kinds of things have their own schedule that was discussed beforehand, a sudden meeting like this can only mean one thing. He accepted the call, and his screen changed to the display he's all too familiar with, a digital conference room, two lines of camera display, the bottom for the generals, the top for the leaders, they were all present, which is to be expected. The matriarch of Qrids, the Tekit queen, the Caevitan allfather, high empress of Enovia, and the Civean president, the current roster of union council, below them was him, and other generals, including general Cynte of the Civeans.
He still remembers his little offer to make an accident to highlight Rana's name, after the reveal of the Goels and the incident it was kept as a private thing between them that didn't really go anywhere. He doesn't want to talk about it, neither does Cynte, so it was technically a win-win situation, despite the unexpected and frankly out of their favor results. The call was oddly silent, no one was saying anything even the loud ones like his mother, they seemed to be waiting for something, or someone. Faen didn't question it, it would be considered stupid, so he too followed the silence. It was a strange and awkward few minutes of staring at each other not saying anything, up until what they waited for arrived in the call.
Another screen appeared above all ten screens, and on it was something he dreaded to see, the collection of red revolving rings, Cain. Practically every general present felt tense, including him, the leaders couldn't care less, except maybe for the Civean president who expressed the most worry as they all waited for Cain to speak. Sudden meeting, all members, and Cain, and considering their latest development with the Goels, this couldn't be good. The red rings assemble into the shape of a solar system like it did when it appeared on the monitors of his warship, and Cain spoke with his usual low pitched synthesized voice that everyone in the room knew quite well.
'it is no doubt all of you will question why I requested this urgent meeting, i apologize if any of you found it to be too sudden, but what I have to tell you will change your mind, and I will not waste your time, as we are in a race against time itself… the union has been breached by an invader, you are under attack, and in a process of galaxy wide invasion'
No, definitely not good.
"What do you mean by this?"
Faen immediately asked, as much as he distrust Cain, he must agree with his mindset that no time should be wasted. And it seems his question stopped a particular set of leaders trying to speak, stopping them from blurting out what are probably4 going to be pointless sarcastic remarks, so that was another benefit of speaking first.
'your union is currently under the invasion of a race that is arguably similar to me, we call them Shakran'
The display of red rings changed to a scrolling collection of images, images of… Faen doesn't know how to describe it, bipedal creatures, made of metal, and grossly disfigured bodies, with sharp claws and many eyes. Every single thing varies, some of the things in the images looked small and only had claws, some were massive and had what are clearly cannons as a weapon. He noted a certain detail about the images, they were blurry, and not straight, and some strange things were staring at the camera, while looking elsewhere. Something tells Faen these images were taken in the middle of active combat.
'They are a hivemind of machines, their sentience and sapience is debatable, but that does matter currently as their only goal is to destroy and conquer'
"Lies! If we were under an invasion from them, we would've known already! Besides… we already have an invader… we're talking to them right now"
The Tekit queen spoke with clear passive aggresive energy in her voice. Faen sighed in annoyance but kept it to himself.
'i understand the distrust, but it is no reason to make a sarcastic remark, however, you need to trust me on this matter, because their return can only mean danger to the union, and the universe as a whole, they are-'
"Wait, what do you mean… their return?"
'you all must've wondered how and why i and my brother ended up the way we did on that desert planet, what you are seeing on my screen is the answer to your question'
It didn't click for any of the leaders, their annoyed expression stays the same as Cain finished his sentence, but it clicked for every single military leader in the room, and it horrified them.
'my kind have encountered them before, my creators, it led to a war, a million year war, between me and them, they are what wiped my creators out of existence, and soon will be the cause of extinction for every single species in this union if we don't take any actions, since you refused, i have personally tracked every ship that left Rosan IV for the last six cycles, here is the data'
The scrolling images turned into a detailed map of the galaxy, with every single star system currently under union control included in it, there were red lines all over the map, they were all traced back all the way to one specific system, Rosan IV. A heavy weight rested itself on Schen's mind as he realized how far the lines have gone, to a point it crosses itself, wrapping around the galaxy in a circle, like some sort of a chaotic web.
'Rosan is lost, it is highly likely they have turned it into a staging ground, i know that we all have strived to avoid this, but war is inevitable, i have send a complete data regarding the Shakrans to all of you, please review it as fast as you can, and take your moves, as i will mine right now, alert your fleets, if they see my fleet entering a system, tell them they are here as an ally, i have been defeated once, i will not repeat the same mistake again, i hope you can catch up and help me, because there is no telling of what they will do once their setup is complete, and there is no telling whether or not i can do this alone'
"Wait! What should we do?"
'search and destroy, hunt down every ship that left the system, check every station, scan every inch of space, detonate stations, evacuate every planet they have visited then purge the cities and hammer the surface with orbital strikes if you might, but by all means… do not let. them. develop. That is all i have to say, my reinforcements are coming, but i do not know if there is enough time, act now'

I petitioned for and received a temporary restraining order against my wife at the beginning of last month because, on top of everything else (emotional/verbal/physical/financial abuse), she had begun threatening me in various ways that put my job and freedom at risk. The distance and time apart gave me the perspective to know that divorce was the only way. I filed about three weeks ago.
It became clear to me that the order would be very difficult to sustain. Some of it was my fault. I wasn’t willing to call the police for less serious violations. She’d love to paint me black to our children, who don’t know the whole story. Also, she was spending worse than ever out of the home. Accordingly, I “let” her come home under the condition that she stayed out of my way.
She sulked in the bedroom, which I ceded to her, for about a week. The hoovering seemed to subside during this time. Since filing, she has generally been begging and bargaining for me to give her 30 days to see how she’s changed with therapy. She even offered to pay my attorney fees to date (with the spending money I provide).
Today, she showed me some knitting she had been working on, and I basically grey rocked it. I wasn’t being mean, just uninterested. I felt it was better not to give her some false hope and also I just don’t care that much anymore and am no longer motivated by my fear of her disapproval. The trauma bond is breaking down. Anyway, this caused a full-blown narcissist injury. She started attacking me for not having completed something I hadn’t done yet but which I was agreeable to but for which I hadn’t made a firm promise on. I utilized JADE.
Now that I recognize the bullying for what it is, I pushed back pretty hard. She perceived this as me attacking her for no reason and she attempted to convince me of this reality. I have to admit I worried initially (with her getting therapy) that she would improve. That seems weird but it would mean two things for me: maybe I would be a jerk for leaving now, and it would also mean she was capable of change but had never been willing to do so for me on her own accord.
My therapist worried I was “back to square one” with her coming home. However, I think it only helps to remove any doubt I had about my decision. No contact isn’t an option at this point due to shared children and financial entanglement. I just needed to vent, but every day is a better one since making the choice to be free! I have visions of having my own life, identity, and financial security.

I got a tattoo May 30th on my upper back/shoulder balde area and I'll be in a wedding June 9th, wearing a bridesmaid dress that does not cover it at all. My tattoo will be 1.5 weeks old by then, which I know is too early to expose it to the sun. The wedding is outdoors for approximately 2 hours starting at 4pm, so pretty sunny.
Everything I've read says you shouldn't wear sunscreen until at least four weeks, but if the tattoo is done peeling by the 9th would sunscreen by okay?
I also had a friend suggest kinesiology tape over my shoulder to cover it. I have some that matches my skin tone and isn't too sticky, especially if I remove it with water.
I know neither option is ideal, and it would be better to just cover it with clothing which is unfortunately not an option.
My question is which would be least damaging: sunscreen after 10 days or cotton tape and risk it sticking to my skin?

Basically I awoke at 2 AM last night to the sound of banging on my front door. Given the time of day, this made me very anxious so I immediately went to the kitchen to get a knife before proceeding to search around my house incase someone had entered. There was no one at the front door.
After 10 minutes of searching and making sure everything was safe I reviewed my home security footage and discovered that it was a group of 4 males who appeared to be 16-20 years old if I had to guess.
They seemed to have noticed my security camera, as they kept looking at it. They then proceeded to put on their hoods before banging on the front door and running away.
I sent a tip to crime stoppers however I have a suspicion that they will return, in which case I was thinking of waiting for them and confronting them with a machete.
I was wondering if trespassing with the potential to break and enter would warrant me using a machete to protect myself, my family, and my property. I feel that if it's on my own property it should be reasonable.

Her twisted limbs are covered in grass, dirt, and rocks. Snow begins to fall all around her, and yet it melts when it touches her blood. While thinking of an excuse for her disappearance, I spot a letter on the bed.

Hi all. I am having trouble with adding new devices to my SmartThings v2 hub. I have not kept up with all the platform changes of late, but for the most part things have just worked for me still. I did have one Z-Wave switch (GE/Jasco) that went offline a while back. I attempted to remove it, exclude it, and re-add it, but trying to add it back never worked. It's not a switch we use all that often, though, so I just let it be. Now today I finally got around to installing some more Z-Wave switches (these are Zooz) and trying to add them is not working either.
I have a mix of old and new devices (in case the v2 hub wasn't enough of a clue) and I have never gotten any of the newer Z-Wave security stuff to work. I have always had to just use the insecure mode. No idea why, but that is the only way I have gotten things to work. Maybe because I have older devices that were made before the security stuff was added to Z-Wave? I don't really care if it is using the security mode or not as long as it works, but figured it might be relevant.
I still have access to the old https://graph.api.smartthings.com/ and have a few devices using Edge drivers (some GE/Jasco switches I had to readd at some point) but most seem to be still using DTHs. The few Zooz switches (and one RGBW controller) are using a custom DTH that I had to install to get them to work. I feel like my issues might be related to the old stuff, but I am not sure how to go about moving things over to Edge drivers. I thought devices were going to be migrated automatically at some point? I am afraid to remove any devices since it seems I might not be able to add them back afterwards.
One final quirk of my setup is that my hub does not show up in the app anywhere. I believe it did originally, but I think I tried to hide it at one point and it now longer shows up anywhere. To go into exclusion mode, I have to go through the Graph API website.
I am wondering if it might be worth resetting everything and trying rebuild it from scratch. I have about 30 devices plus the ones I just installed and the one I can't reconnect. It wouldn't be the end of world, but would be a bit of work. Anyone have any ideas? I tried searching for similar issues, but had a hard time finding anything that wasn't already years old at this point.

Living in Massachusetts and re-signed a lease from July 2022-July 2023. Original signing the year prior required payment for first, last, and security . Having been responsible tenants, we informed the landlord that a family apartment had become available and wanted to break the lease and move out early, the landlord gave a verbal affirmation that we would be allowed to leave without issue. The landlord was notified March 1st that we would be moving out on April 1st, and to apply our last months rent to April. Listings were created online for the apartment, and we moved out April 1st 2023. The landlord did not return what was left of the security deposit until June 3rd 2023.

Since then I've learned a highly valuable tech skillset. I worked very hard and used each job as a stepping stone until the next job until I was making 6 figures. Saved my money by tolerating awful Craigslist roommates until I bought my own home. But now that I've achieved all those tangible goals I've gotten depressed again, cried 8 hours in one day 2 weeks ago, lots of negativity over my parents.

When we actually met in person for the second interview he was also a lot more handsome than what I expected. For my first 6 months working there I couldn't even look him in the eyes because of how attracted I was to him. But I told myself it was a crush and I would get over it. We never said anything inappropriate to each other, but I sense the tension. Like, once I couldn't get something to fit together -- I think it was a pen clip or something small like that -- and he started putting it together and trying with a lot of intensity to help me, and the office gossip made a snide remark that he was acting like a boyfriend trying to please a girl.
Anyway, 2 years later, COVID hit, and now we work remotely and aren't even in the same office.
