2023.06.02 21:21 LunaLynnTheCellist [TotK] Why is Tears of the Kingdom so frustrating to me? [a long and probably quite selfish rant]

I want to preface this rant by saying that I'm SO happy people are loving the game, and the reason these issues affect my experience so much might be because of my autism and ADD, but hopefully y'all can understand what I'm talking about in this possibly quite selfish rant.
Also, very minor spoilers I guess.
Breath of the Wild is my favourite video game of all time (and I've played a LOT of amazing games). So I was naturally super excited for the release of its sequel, and I bought TotK on release day. I started playing and had a great time for the first maybe 3 hours. Then I slowly started to realize more and more annoying things with the game, and now, not 15 minutes go by without me getting terribly frustrated with the game.
First thing I noticed is that switching weapons is slower than in botw. This is something that i do multiple times per battle, even in small encounters. In botw, switching weapons is very swift, allowing you to switch back and forth between weapons, arrows, shields and bows multiple times in small time windows without breaking the flow of the fight. In TotK, there's a small delay where you can't input anything every time you press left, right or up on the d-pad, and after you've selected a weapon, there's an even longer delay before the menu closes. From my experience, all this more than doubles the switching time on average and feels terrible and it kills the flow of combat every time you switch. You also can't switch weapons with the triggers in TotK for some reason, and don't even get me started on the long ass item menu.
Next thing I noticed is that having to navigate the sky islands for so long without the paraglider is a terrible experience. It's cool in the beginning, but after a while, it's just... frustrating and takes forever imo. This is definitely a smaller thing, but it kinda represents a bigger problem from the very start that I have with the game.
And that problem is clunkyness. This is mostly about Ultrahand, but also about a lot of other aspects of the game. So, the main mechanic of TotK is Ultrahand, and while letting you build anything you want with a huge arsenal of devices sounds amazing, it's awfully clunky in practice imo, at least early game. I'll give it credit for being better Magnesis, but also manually using Ultrahand to spend 10 minutes building a machine to traverse a gap while using up a ton of resources, just to find out that it straight up didn't work, is one of the most miserable experience i've had in a zelda game. Using machines you built is a lot of fun but when you before you get Autobuild, building them feels terrible and is filled with tiny annoyances with the controls of Ultrahand (not to mention autobuild still takes resources).
But why don't we talk about the other abilities too? Ascend is wore revali's gale. There, I said it. It's just worse, it doesn't work if the uneven or slanted, and the fact that you can't use it in the air is outrageous to me. Clunky. Then there's Fuse, which is an awesome concept, but honestly, it just feels unnecessary and slightly out of place to me. A ton of weapons from botw seem to have been removed in totk because Fuse can replace them, but if I'm forced to pick between a stylish sledgehammer or double axe and varius iterations of a club or sword with a rock on it, I think I know what I'm choosing. I won't deny the potential for creativity Ultrahand and Fuse have, but from a casual TotK gamer's perspective, it just doesn't feel as good. Also fusing shit onto arrows is hell why do i have to do it for every single arrow, why cant i just switch to my ice arrows and be happy. And then there's recall which... just takes too long for me man, I don't like waiting in video games, and if I'm already frustrated from everything else, and then I fuck up my recall idea oh my god. Not to mention that you can't use it on enemies like with stasis +, which was one of my favourite combat mechanics in botw, and with recall it coulda been really cool i think.
To really summarize how I feel about this game, it feels like BotW basically had this motto of "if you wonder whether or not you can do something, you probably can", and the few times where it didn't work, it at least didn't feel super frustrating or it might even have been funny. In TotK, I'll have a cool idea, and it either just won't work because the game said so for seemingly no reason (see: my opinion on Ascend) or I'll waste a bunch of time/resources and end up frustrated. And this happens A LOT.
And then there's the more frequent blood moons (annoying), the lack of the bomb rune (im addicted to windbombs), the lack of cryonis (i just like it idk) and the vibe of TotK being much less serence/relaxing/beatiful/peaceful (imo), gloom hands being more annoying than scary, and far inferior to guardians (imho), the lack of the gerudo vai set (very minor but still), etc.... All in all im really disappointed and sad that I don't enjoy the sequel to my favourite game like everyone else seems to.
TL;DR: Everything feels clunky and I get frustrated all the time by so many small annoying things, and all of my favourite things about BotW are either not in TotK, or they feel less significant or much clunkier.
PS. I hope some of you could relate to at least some of these issues I have with Tear of the Kingdom, and if not... that's okay too and I implore you to ignore me and go have fun with your unethical warmachines (which I btw love seeing videos of on here), and in the meantime, I'll just be over here, windbombing around the ruins of Hyrule. Random BotW fan on the internet, out.

2023.06.02 21:21 tarheelphenom ESPN College Hoops

Does anybody remember or still play this game? To this day, I believe that it is the most slept on college game ever made. And this will probably be blasphemous to say, but it has the best Dynasty Mode, even over 2k8 in my opinion...and here is why.
1) They had an email system where recruits would send you emails expressing interest in your school and wanting to visit. You could respond back with mutual interest or declining their offer. You could do the same...reaching out to as many players as your point budget would allow and the recruits would respond back with interest or declining to get involved. They would also send you emails letting you know that they committed to your school.
2) When you scouted recruits, you actually got text scouting reports back instead of generic letter grades.
3) To Piggyback off of #2, when you scouted a player, you could actually send a coach to watch the player and you could actually spectate the game...or you could jump into the game and play the high school game as a recruit. So you really could get a legit feel for how that recruit was. 2k put so much attention to detail in it that, just like in real life back then, a star high school big man most of the time was the biggest player on the floor...that was actually replicated in the game. You would jump in and play as the high school big man recruit...he would be 6'10, and the next tallest guy on the floor might be 6'4. And after the game was over, the coach who went to scout the player would report back either accurate or inaccurate information on what he saw based on his Scouting attribute.

Don't get me wrong 2k8's Legacy Mode is top notch...and you could do pretty much the same thing as far as watching recruits games in more of an AAU setting. But, I've never been a fan of the scouting system that merely unlocks letter grades and that's it. To be able to have dialogue with recruits through email, I thought was really cool. I actually have that game still for the PS2 even today and will still pop it in from time to time.

Anybody else enjoy this game?

2023.06.02 21:20 dizasta2012 So I'm gonna go ahead and say what some of you are afraid to say...

So I've played Diablo since D1. I got introduced to hardcore (HC) in D2 and never looked back. If you're not playing HC, are you even a fan of the series?
But listen. This game isn't it. Straight up. I've now died twice on World Tier 2. And I figured okay... I'll take it down to World Tier 1 and take baby steps... I get to L23 and die to a few bears. How? People are saying they completed Act I at L15. Here I am on borderline Ultimate Skill level (L24) and I'm smoked by non-boss enemies in the middle of Act I. I just wanna be clear that I have never had this issue in either D2 or D3.
On top of that, not a single Legendary. Granted my 2 rare rings were decent. 5 measly potions? No way to travel quickly either. I get 2 charges that allows me to "fast travel" a total of 10 feet. In D3 at least by L12 you had a means to travel quickly and you can hit a Legendary or 2 by L20. The game doesn't feel "fluid" like D3 did.
My honest score at this point in time: 6/10 at best meaning I'm not gonna uninstall but there is by no means any reason to "no-life" the game and put down other games I've been playing. Ill play it for a few hours every few weeks and that's it.

Tell me about your worst build experiences
So today was my first bad day. Old AMD cooler took my CPU with it when taking it out. AM4 clips suck imo. Bent around 12 pins, had a panic attack and spent 2 hours bending them back.
All for the sake of an AIO, which is so good for CPU temps (CPU seems to be ok, after Benchmarks and light gaming).
Then just before deciding to post this, I realised I have mounted my two tops fans for exhaust rather than intake.
I've had better moments but I'd love to hear some roasting and stories of yer own.
Peace and love from Scotland
Monstera leaf has been surgically removed since. Just in case yer wondering
Also added some extension cables to add some more white into it, Fractal AIO seems sleek too!

2023.06.02 21:15 1066Woody Karl Fan Game I'm Working On

Karl Fan Game I'm Working On
Hi Pilki fans! I wanted to share something I’ve been working on for the last 6 months. It’s a 2D pixel art fan game featuring young Karl. The game is set at Christmas in 1985. It’s tentatively called “A Karl Pilkington Christmas”, though this may change.
The purpose of this smaller game is to set the tone for a much bigger Karl RPG I’d love to make (hopefully with some help). This started as a proof of concept but I’d love for this to hold up as its own little thing and not just a demo. This game will be 100% free and available for PC and Mac.
It’s still very early in development and there’s lots still missing (including an entire ⅔ of the story being playable), but I have enough in place that I can show some screenshots without being chased out of here with pitchforks.
A few notes on these screenshots:
  • Nothing here is final so consider all this WIP
  • The UI is currently for Playstation but that’s just because I’m using a PS controller. A universal UI is on my very long to-do list.
  • Don’t point out that Karl’s cat is shaved wrong (should be bottom half still hairy). I know. I feel shame. It’s on my list. This fucking cat. I’m annoyed he didn’t get run ov….or is that the…yeah, it did get run over.
I’ll be sharing progress updates on the Pilkipedia Discord channel, so please join if you haven’t already: https://discord.gg/6HktvMkxC9

2023.06.02 21:11 ethereal3xp Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens cut from the same cloth. Everything is good and dandy

These guys are flowery and not honest imo. Mazzulla is better than Udoka?? What??
It is becoming more and more like corporate speak vs real basketball talk.
This is why coaches Spo and Malone are more respectable imo.
"We played like crap. We got punked. We are undeserving. We blew the series .. with terrible starts"
This is called accountability. And understanding/acknowledging the negatives ... so that you can repaigrow.
Brad Stevens presser yesterday sickened me. Not only did he make every excuse under the sun. Even said something ill advise (back against the wall we were great....except game 7....what a joke. The most important game to close).
Everything he said, other than some minor tweaks means. They are going to run it back again. The same way....maybe he is praying that Miami doesnt make it to ECF again. And we will be good/have a chance.
No talks about...needing to be better against the zone D. Needing to improve on team D. Needing to start out series better... and try to win that 1st game.
Brad Stevens has a masters degree in blind optimism ... and it is no different than bsing. If the fans keep selling out the garden... nothing is going to change.

2023.06.02 21:05 MorePea7207 A frank discussion on alternative streaming, choices of movies and where genre movies are and where they are going...?

I really want to know why there isn't a modern Blockbuster Video online. A streamer that aggregates the better genre films strictly for VOD rental. Amazon Prime Video is not enough for me, especially when it carries Prime content that I've paid for and Freevee stuff. I need a separate platform in the UK and Europe at least where I can find the kinds of new B-movies that I used to rent at Blockbuster in the 90s with a steady stream of action and thriller stars. Somewhere where's there's at least a sense of curation and knowledge of what fans like me would want.
Unfortunately, I have to choose alternative torrenting platforms. Every weekend, just like visiting the rental store like Friday and Saturday, I go on there to find an action or thriller movie. Sometimes, I find one, two or three, even four. Of course, I'd love to find them on Prime Video or on a Blockbuster Video lined up so I can watch, but I download an HD rip with 5.1 sound (4K is going too far plus file sizes are insane).
Torrenting websites seem to be the only websites I can find indie films too. Some of the movies I've seen have been very good, but I'd never have seen them as I have no idea where they stream legally in the UK. I've also found TV shows that have not been picked up for showing in the UK until a year later like EPIX's From. I remember the witch TV show Salem on the old WGN America channel, that was never shown in the UK. I saw all three seasons.
I feel like the existing streaming platforms that carry VOD are not fit for purpose and the agents/distributors that sell the rights or place them on these platforms are not doing their job.
The VOD industry needs to up its game.
I'm up for most responses, but please don't delete this post straight away.

2023.06.02 21:04 SiccSemperTyrannis Bally Sports may miss payments to up to 12 NHL teams next season as only 5 or 6 of 18 Bally channels are profitable and Bally Sports+ has just 203,000 subscribers, 55% of their target

Bally disclosed these numbers in a bankruptcy court yesterday as they tried to lower TV rights payments due to 4 MLB teams. While the NHL is not involved in this Bally-MLB dispute today, Bally's implosion could soon impact the 12 NHL teams whose local games they produce and broadcast - Arizona, Detroit, Florida, Tampa Bay, St Louis, Minnesota, Columbus, Anaheim, LA, Carolina, Nashville. Bally has not said they will pay 100% of the TV rights money due to NHL teams next season, so the NHL could be in the same position the MLB is in as soon as October. Also, Bally only owns the local streaming rights for its NHL and NBA teams for 1 more season and losing them would kill Bally Sports+ even as they continue to hold local TV rights for those teams.
The big questions for the NHL this summer:
How and where many fans watch NHL games in the US could change drastically within the next year.
Sources:

Background - Why is this happening and how did we get here?

Bally Sports (formally Diamond Sports Group aka DSG, part of Sinclair Boradcast Group) in 2019 bought the former regional Fox Sports Networks and broadcasts local games for 12 NHL teams. As people cut the cord and move to streaming, the entire Regional Sports Network (RSN) business model has begun to collapse, resulting in DSG hemorrhaging money. Bally isn't the only one impacted - Warner Bros announced in February they are shutting down their AT&T Sports RSNs this year, causing Vegas in May to announce a new TV and local streaming partner for next season.
RSNs rely on 2 major sources of revenue: monthly fees paid by every TV subscriber with their channel and advertising. The channel rights fees are worth way more than the advertising since everyone pays it regardless of how many people actually watch the channel. RSNs began to demand ever higher channel fees from cable, satellite, and streaming TV companies (Comcast, Dish, Cox, YouTube TV, Sling TV, etc) to pay for ballooning rights fees demanded by sports teams for the past 2 decades. Fees are up to $7 per month per TV subscriber as of 2021. The TV companies saw how few customers actually watched sports and decided the RSNs weren't worth passing the increased costs to all of their customers, so they started dropping RSNs left and right in the last several years. That has made it harder than ever for fans to actually watch games, drastically cut RSN revenue, and why so few streaming TV plans include local sports channels today.
RSNs have responded by trying to go "direct to consumer" (DTC) with streaming plans like Bally Sports+, NESN 360, and MSG+. ESPN is doing the same nationally with ESPN+. The problem as shown by Bally Sports+'s dismal subscriber numbers is that the number of people willing to pay for RSN streaming plans is so far too small to offset the losses in their TV subscriber base. RSNs are stuck in a paradox - they are locked into long-term TV rights contracts they can no longer afford, but canceling those contracts removes the only content they have that people will pay to watch.
This financial chaos resulted in Bally declaring bankruptcy in March and trying to force MLB to re-negotiate some of their contracts so Bally could keep showing games but pay less to do so. Fast forward to this week as the MLB and Bally have argued their positions in bankruptcy court. The judge ruled yesterday against Bally and in favor of the MLB and 4 teams who Bally was refusing to fully pay for their TV rights. Bally now must either pay the full amount due or give the 4 impacted teams their local rights back. Bally already did this with the Sand Diego Padres earlier this week and the MLB immediately announced they will produce and distribute future games.

Hi. So this is an update post from this post. I want to formally apologize about how I missed on DS's hardware limitations and overwhelmed the amount of tracks that probably weren't possible due to hardware limits since some of the tracks (mainly GCN and maybe N64). I wanted to make changes to my original Retro Track "fixed" concept. So lets get into it. This time, instead of thinking about what fans are capable of based on custom tracks, I want to base it off whether if I think these tracks are hardware liable for a DS. So, lets get into it.
SNES
I've swapped out KB2 with KB1 and placed it in the Shell Cup since I'd figured that CI1 might've been a little harder than KB1 instead. So that means that CI2 stays (but gets moved to the banana cup) the Shell Cup still kicks off with a Koopa based track though but there's no water holes anymore since its not KB2. DP3 and MC4 still remains in its original spots since there's no point in changing anything from the SNES line after CI2.
N64
[N64] Wario Stadium swaps out Koopa (Troopa) Beach mainly because Wario is cool. However, that's not the only reason why its there in the shell cup. While there's not much going on, [N64] WS can have a few dash panels at the ramps and maybe some fire rings at bigger jumps like in [DS] Wario Stadium. But this is an easy course since the layout of the course doesn't have much going on, which is a fine course for the introductory retro cup. the N64 line doesn't change from here on out however since there's not much else to change.
GBA
Alright, now this is where things gets a lot more interesting. I wanted to be creative a little bit and not be repetitive, so I wanted the shell cup and lightning cup to end off with a GBA course. I know it kills the pattern but it's not that bad of a change honestly. I kinda like this since it mixes it up a little for the beginning cup and final cup just to see what you've learned after completing the last 3 cups.
Anyways, on to the tracks itself. I've been reading about SG being the hardest GBA course in DS while BC2 being terrible. so i moved SG to the Leaf Cup in order to keep the difficulty in check. Yoshi Desert moves down to the shell cup since its easier than BP, RR and Sky Garden. BP however moves down to the Banana cup since i've found out that it's shorter than sky garden, making it a little bit easier, however not too easy since the blocks can still be hit and fallen down and the boos on the path can still be troublesome while also driving through tighter turns than usual.
I've swapped the spots for the last GCN course and GBA course since GBA Rainbow Road can be hard due to shooting stars, tight corners and bouncy road sides. AND, it's possible to program in without the fear of hardware limitations getting in the way due to the track being relatively flat. It's also another rainbow road that has yet to return in a modern MK game. (rainbow tour maybe??)

GCN
GCN MC was actually an unused track, so I'm giving it the spotlight here in the shell cup. It's a good course, don't get me wrong and i'd love for it to see where it goes. i've limited the amount of retro circuits so it wont be too repetitive hearing the same music or predictable track design during each cup or so.
GCN DKM stays the same. Just reuse the airship fortress cannon and remodel it to be a DK barrel while fencing off any ultra shortcuts to cut down on hardware. If this isn't possible in DS then just pretend that GCN Dino Dino Jungle is there instead.
I've chose Mushroom City over Bridge so nobody has to feel disappointed about the dash panels on the rails in MB not being there (along with the special cars not being there) the music still stays in but now it's at night and theres alternative paths now. So, a little harder than MB itself but it remains in the leaf cup as the 3rd GCN track.
Waluigi Stadium is a weird one since it's less hardware powerful than it's colosseum brother. I overestimated about Wario Colosseum & and Rainbow Road since it was working fine in GCGP (gamecube track grand prix, all mario kart dd!! tracks in mkds). Hopefully since it almost resembles DS Wario Stadium, it can work on real hardware without hardware limitations with the robotic moving Piranha Plants being there.
Might work on fixing MKWii's retros and maybe even adding a retro selection for DD!!, GP 2 and GPDX like I said in the last post. goodbye for now though.
