2023.05.23 20:05 ToMtRoOpEr1 The Justice League
so basically im rewriting the arrowverse the way i want it (any questions just ask) and to end the arrowverse im doing one final series called Hall of Justice where there will be a few 5-8 episode arcs of the entire Justice League as an entity then inbetween smaller one on one crossovers like an episode about a Flash v Superman race and a World’s Finest crossover with Batwoman and Kara
but the question i need help with is what the actual JL roster should be because i don’t want it to just be all heroes like in the annual crossovers but instead a smaller roster of maybe 6-8 characters - so far the team is Superman, The Flash (Barry), The Flash (Wally - he because the main flash for a few seasons), Batwoman and FIRESTORM AKA Revived Ronnie Raymond (from Blackest Night/Brightest Day and Jax
now i’m undecided on Supergirl because i’m not sure how i want to end Kara’s personal story (i know how i’m ending the show but like on a more personal level) and i’m also not sure on Sara Lance as i love the character but i’m not sure if she needs to be on the JL so any suggestions

2023.05.21 02:30 FarrowEwey Why I find Wind Lily's uncap art disturbing
This isn't a shitpost or an attempt to flame. I've been meditating this for a while and I figure now is as good a time as any to get this off my chest. Lily is just the latest example.
I'm sure this will come across as extremely autistic so I apologize in advance.
1-Age is not arbitrary.
No part of character design is arbitrary. Cygames could have made only adults, but they didn't. They could have made adults with smaller builds, thin adult men, flat adult women, but they didn't. This isn't the result of a roll of a dice. This is a deliberate choice they made, and thus it should be open to discussion. There's no reason why we can spend entire threads talking about a character's usefulness in GW or gender but somehow their canonical age is off-limits.
So if we have official material saying Sara is 9, Andira is 10, Io is 11, Lily and Cidala are 12,... we should be able to ask "why" and speculate why that is. It is an integral part of them as characters.
2-Context matters.
It's not just a matter of physical appearance. I'm not calling Lily a child because she has a flat chest, I'm calling her a child because she talks like a child, behaves like a child and is treated as a child by the other characters. That's why even the idea of her being sexualized feels weird.
3-Art can be misleading.
Most anime artstyle is very simplified. This means there are less differences between adults and children in anime than there are in real life. For example, it generally doesn't get to the level of detail where you'd start seeing skin texture differences and wrinkles.
This leads to lines getting blurred, because now it's harder to tell at first glance how old a character is supposed to be. That's why a lot of people have started using basic markers like chest size: not because they think "adult=big breasts" IRL but because that's something that still gets conveyed even in a simplified artstyle.
What makes this even more confusing in GBF is that playable characters' art usually depicts them alone, meaning there is no point of reference to compare them to. If you put Sara or Lily next to an adult woman then their age is obvious, but if you only looked at Lily's uncap art or Summer Sara's EX pose without context you could be forgiven for thinking they're just small young adults.
For me, this creates a sense of uneasiness. I don't like the idea of an author constantly trying to sneak shit past me. That kind of ambiguity, toeing the line of what's acceptable/legal, ... not really my thing.
4-Facial expressions.
I want to focus on this point specifically. Lots of people will say things like "this character feels like they're being sexualized" or "I'm getting a sex vibe from this character" but won't be able to explain why. More often than not it's because of how their face is drawn, particularly their eyes.
Typically, if you're drawing kids you would give them big round eyes to represent their innocence and youthful energy, while smaller eyes would indicate older characters.
Now look at all the times Cygames went full fanservice with young girls: Summer Io's EX pose or Summer Andira's uncap art, for example. Notice how their eyes are half-closed? That, by itself, completely changes the atmosphere of the picture. Those are not facial expressions a kid would make. It's like someone took the face from Christmas Anthuria's or Summer Metera's uncap art and photoshopped it on a kid's body. It looks weird.
Similarly, they drew Lily with her eyes closed, a neutral face and a completely unnatural pose for eating. Contrast this with Summer Kolulu's uncap art, which shows her sitting on the sand normally and eating with a big grin on her face. Nobody had a problem with Kolulu because that picture completely sells the idea of a kid who's just happy to be having a beach picnic.
5-It's all about the money
The reason why gacha games have underage characters is very simple: the more weird shit you're into, the more cut off from normal society you will be; the more unrealistic shit you're into, the harder it'll be for you to find an outlet IRL and the more dependent on entertainment products you'll be. This isn't even specific to Japan, it's a rule in pretty much the entire entertainment industry worldwide.
Regardless of how many posts you make on Reddit trying to rationalize it, at the end of the day normies will still steer well clear of you while big entertainment companies are laughing all the way to the bank with your money. You'll be trapped, to be fleeced for all you're worth, with no possibility of escape.
It's a deeply unpleasant, predatory business model and I really don't like to be reminded that it exists.
Conclusion
I'm not calling for some "righteous crusade against lolicons" or some shit. I just wanted the people who usually engage in these discussions to see a different perspective and maybe understand where I'm coming from when I say loli/shota creeps me out. I'm mostly apathetic to it at this point but every time the discussion comes back I get the urge to speak. Hope I can get it out of my system with this thread.
EDIT: stopped relying on my failing memory and went to the wiki for accurate character ages. Alzheimer is coming. Pray for me.

2023.05.20 22:25 Dryadversity The nature and psychology of the Primeval Current
Spoilers for Sellen's quest. Gc and Gf I think the Primeval Current and Wisdom of Stone were inspired by the concepts of fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence, which are the two components in psychologist Raymond Cattell's theory of intelligence.
Raya Lucaria and the sorcerers have strong thematic connections to intelligence and mind, along with scholarship, reading, and other intellectual activities. More specifically, Raya Lucaria seems to have been inspired by Western scientists like Isaac Newton (credit to Quelaag), which makes it more likely that the Primeval Current is inspired by Western psychological frameworks. (Garrulous Goldmask however has found connections between the Primeval Current and yoga; so there's a good example of Eastern influence.)
Cattell's model was later incorporated into a larger theoretical framework called Cattell-Horn-Carrol theory, which is probably the most widely accepted model of intelligence in the West. Fluid intelligence (Gf) is the ability or cluster of faculties that allows one to think through and solve new problems, and includes sub-faculties like working memory and processing speed. Crystallized intelligence (Gc) is equivalent to long-term memory, and therefore based on prior knowledge.
Under its common definition, wisdom would be considered a form of crystallized intelligence. Since crystallized intelligence is prior knowledge, there is a natural association with the "wisdom of the ages", of elders, ancients, etc. Thus, there is a psychological basis for associating wisdom with crystals and stone. Furthermore, since 'primeval' basically means "very old", the Primeval sorcerers likely possess ancient knowledge, which again, is commonly referred to as wisdom.
The Primeval Current is consistently associated with fear. This is most explicit in the description of Comet Azur, which reads: "
When Azur glimpsed into the primeval current, he saw darkness. He was left both bewitched and fearful of the abyss." Azur's experience petrified him psychologically, but also physically; petrification is the process of turning to stone, i.e. crystal. Nonetheless, it should be noted that in Elden Ring, crystallization seems to turn the mind and body into a single substance, meaning there isn't a strong distinction between mental and physical processes in this context.
This is why I think Azur's and Lusat's bodies remain valuable to Sellen; though reduced to stone, the stone is imbued with their exceptional intelligence—which is perhaps more efficient at creating graven masses. Thus, if glimpsing the Primeval Current produces a body-mind synthesis, it makes sense that psychological petrification would occur simultaneously with physical petrification.
Upon reviewing Lusat and Azur's models, I noticed something that (I previously thought) could connect this idea of fear to the Wisdom of Stone, which is that both of them have their eyes covered. Originally—before I checked and realized that Azur and Lusat are wearing veils—I thought their eyes were covered by their crystal headpieces.
https://preview.redd.it/y85uwqqlo11b1.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4953421880bf89e145246f5579d13c262e4bf26b The cloth blinds could be the Primeval sorcerer variant of the blinds worn Two Fingers prophets. Or perhaps Lusat and Azur were literally blinded by what they saw in the Current, and are wearing the cloth for the same reason as Irina/Hyetta. One could argue that in the context of the Primeval sorcerers, both of these are true. We know Wilhem the errant sorcerer has some connection to the Primeval Current, and he wears the Hierodas glintstone crown, which has the eyes covered by a red cloth. This could indicate his eyes were gouged out, similar to the thorn sorcerers. (Perhaps the Primeval sorcerers removed their eyes in an attempt to avert their gaze?) Yet, the crown was bestowed to sorcerers before departing the academy, which means the blindness symbolism is not entirely due to physical blindness.
It's also possible the blinds were used to
enhance one's vision into the Primeval Current. Since the current is dark and abyssal, then perhaps by constantly looking into their blinds, the sorcerers' eyes would adjust to the darkness, allowing them to see more stars in the Current. After all, adjusting one's eyes to the night sky is an inevitable part of stargazing.
As mentioned, I originally thought it was the crystal itself that was covering their eyes. The interpretation I developed was that both characters are hiding in the Wisdom of Stone, using crystallized, wisdom-imbued helmets—or that they might be blocking their vision to cease their observation of the Current, or attempting to "hide" from the Current by taking advantage of object impermanence; in other words, they might be trying to make the Primeval Current "go away" by covering their eyes. Since the effects of observing the Current only occur through observation, this seemingly childlike technique is probably effective; The Primeval Current is object-impermanent.
To hide in stone might seem counterintuitive if stone represents fear; but stone is also protective, as demonstrated by the ancient dragons, and perhaps (more symbolically) by turtles hiding in their shells. This thematic pairing is repeated in the coffin cutscenes played when traversing the waterfalls: paradoxically, the coffin—a symbol of stone, death and fear—is
entered in order to
avoid death. Another closely related theory I shared in my previous post is that Lusat might be hiding from the Primeval Current in the Sellia Hideaway's purple (associated with gravity and fear) glintstone. If this is true, it would make the general "hiding in stone" theory more likely.
Wisdom is something that protects against, and is very often contrasted with, the fear that tends to accompany experience of the unknown. When faced with a frightful and novel situation, we might recall short sayings and saws, perhaps repetitiously. Religious people are likely to meditate on verses from their scriptures. Recall of these sayings and verses is technically a form of crystallized intelligence, unsheathed from memory (like a crystal sword) to help us in these encounters. Thus, the Wisdom of Stone helps defend against unpredictability and chaos—and I believe Azur and Lusat might be using this wisdom to shield their perception of the Primeval Current. Crystals, I'd like to note, have a highly ordered state of matter; a "crystal structure" is sometimes loosely defined as the ordering of any solid material, which would make crystals a suitable weapon against chaos.
Imagination Although the concept of crystallized intelligence seems to have been left mostly untouched in Elden Ring (besides its being literalized as physical crystals), I believe the concept of fluid intelligence was replaced with imagination. Part of what led me to this theory is the connection between the Primeval Current and intelligence/psychology. If perception is tied so heavily to the Primeval Current (fear, vision, etc.) one could reasonably speculate the Primeval Current has something to do with consciousness.
However, the primary evidence for this theory is the description of the Founding Rain of Stars:
"The glimpse of the primeval current that the astrologer saw became real, and the stars' amber rained down on this land." If the glimpse of the Primeval Current is something that became real, this would suggest it was something unreal to begin with. This is a psychological interpretation, but there is also physical interpretation I'd like to share on this same description in one of the following sections below.
To continue: I've been thinking that the influence of Lovecraft on the Primeval Current could be a hint that it's rooted in the imagination. This is because what breaks the minds of Lovecraft's characters is the
inability to comprehend,
i.e. to imagine, the deities described. A similar kind of brain-blasting horror exists in
Hellraiser, which was an influence on Elden Ring as well as
Berserk. More speculative evidence is the onyx and alabaster lords. Others have likened them to dark elves and light elves, which have become classic creatures in high fantasy. As such, it would be fitting if such creatures are fantastical, even within the world of Elden Ring; in other words, if they originate from the mind. Something else that comes to mind is Terence McKenna's "machine elves" anecdote, which further links elves with psychospiritual experiences, and with fantasy.
There's of course the line from Sellen about "opening our minds", which would make more sense if it's referring to imaginative capacity than fluid intelligence. Consciousness is arguably closer conceptually to imagination than fluid intelligence, although the latter does nonetheless affect our perceptions of things (e.g. through working memory), and thus our consciousness.
The last thought I had for this section has to do with Sellen's view of the stars as living things, which she shares at the beginning of her quest and repeats at its end. To summarize: the Primeval sorcerers view the stars as living things, while the majority of glintstone sorcerers do not. What does this imply about the Primeval sorcerers and Current?
For one, it reveals the Primeval sorcerers have a more ancient way of thinking than modern sorcerers. Stars, for a significant length of history, were indeed interpreted as living things:
as gods and mythological figures. This could be one reason the sorcerers and Current are called "Primeval"; they represent an older and more mythological way of looking at the night sky. Once again, there is an association here with fantasy and imagination. Though it might not be true in a technical sense, we often think of ancient peoples as having possessed greater imaginations than us (even though this was often the consequence of limited knowledge).
Here's another way of looking at this: The Primeval sorcerers are astrologers, and seek to make the culture of sorcery more like it used to be, when it was integrated with astrology. Since Elden Ring is a medieval fantasy, I had just assumed that astrology was the closest thing in the Lands Between to astronomy. But I may have been overlooking how astrology is the more ancient, primeval basis for astronomy. The Primeval Sorcerers might seek a revival of astrology because it is older and more magical than the current magical culture, which is analogous to astronomy in that it's more scientific.
More thoughts on psychology, and why Sellen might have succeeded In addition to imagination, the Primeval Current might be equivalent to collective consciousness.
The user M00n_Slippers had the theory that the waterfalls in the underground could be representations of the Primeval Current, and I think this is correct. More recently, I watched a video by TheCenteredTarnished ("Elden Ring Lore: The Great Works Part 1") who points out that in depth psychology, collective consciousness or unconsciousness is sometimes compared to a waterfall.
For background, the Primeval Current is already linked conceptually to souls, since there is linguistic similarity between "Primeval Current" and "primal glintstones", which are used by the Primeval sorcerers. And souls are equivalent to consciousness, hence the word 'psyche'. So if the Primeval Current is represented with waterfalls, and waterfalls are representations of collective consciousness—and the Primeval Current is already equivalent to consciousness—then the Primeval Current might be collective consciousness. After all, the Primeval Current is parallel (if not equivalent to) the Primordial Crucible, which is a union of all life melted together into a collective. This movement toward collective unity should also be present in the Primeval Current then; evidence for which is the graven masses, which are clusters of sorcerers grafted together.
https://preview.redd.it/orepm79ro11b1.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6317f22da7d87b28c1acb992cd94d8993c9536c Since the graven masses are collections of heads (and minds), and these heads seem to be severed from the rest of the body, I think the idea is that they are simultaneously the result of knowing too much, and of consequently "losing their heads", thus ultimately knowing nothing. It's a clever way of expressing the dangers of excess curiosity, which have often been described in this paradoxical fashion.
Related to this is the fact that Sellen's glintstone crown is cracked. This could be an omen of her death, since Destined Death is often symbolized as a black gash. The crack also reminds me of the evergaol rifts, which I believe are associated with the Primeval Current, and probably Destined Death. As it pertains to psychology though, or at least idioms about it, I think the joke is that Sellen "opened her mind so much her brain fell out."
Despite the symbolism of the graven mass, it's been speculated that Sellen's experiment may have been a success. There is actually some support for this interpretation which I'd like to share here.
In multiple item descriptions, the Crystalians are said to possess a "faint cogitation". The descriptions equate this faint cogitation with the Wisdom of Stone. Now, it seems clear enough that Sellen's consciousness is also faint. While she might be in too much pain to speak, it's also possible her mind has been mostly destroyed. Thus, since Sellen becomes stone, and has a faint cogitation after turning into the graven mass, this could be evidence she achieved what she sought. By the way, I think this is also seen in Azur and Lusat: they also seem to possess a reduced form of consciousness. They don't even seem fully aware of their surroundings or their interactions with us.
Both the Crystalians and Primeval Sorcerers (or Azur at least) are found in meditative poses. "Faint cogitation" could be an allusion to Eastern practices of meditation, many of which involve a slowing and calming of the mind's thoughts. So even though experiencing the Primeval Current might be like an overload of consciousness, perhaps the desired result is consciousness that's been reduced? I think this calming of the mind could be represented physically as petrification and solidification, which I'll discuss in the two sections below.
The Nature of the Primeval Current 1.) Gravity
I've talked about the connection between gravity and the Primeval Current before, so here I'll add something I haven't shared yet: 'Graven' and 'gravity' start with the same letters. And mass is the source of gravitational attraction.
In my previous post, I raised the idea that Lusat could be using the Sellia Hideaway to hide from the Primeval Current. Some opposing evidence for this is that the Sellia Hideaway is filled with purple glintstone, i.e. gravity glinstone. In Elden Ring, gravity, stone, and purple are all associated with fear—so it could be said that Lusat is hiding in a symbol of fear. Could this contradiction exist for the same reason Azur and Lusat "hide" in crystals, or for the same reason stone coffins (fear and death) are used to avoid death?
In Garrulous Goldmask's video on the Primeval Current and yoga ("Explaining the Primeval Current with Yoga"), he shows that Azur is actually levitating like the Crystalians. So
both Azur and Lusat have associations with gravity—which means this could be true for the Primeval Current as well.
https://preview.redd.it/yewzlvdso11b1.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e78c0b91f3e69548472bbc15b9323b60276962f3 The word 'graven' actually contains another secret. It contains the word
raven with the letter g placed in front. As mentioned, 'g' is used to denote the g-factor and its components in psychology. And the connection with ravens makes perfect sense because Azur's and Lusat's robes are
made with raven feathers.
The raven connection explains Azur being on Mt. Gelmir and provides a connection to the assassins of Ravenmount, who wear the Raptor's Black Feathers. This also strengthens the link between the Current and Gloam-Eyed Queen, who has many associations with Gelmir. Thus, the Primeval Sorcerers have two important connections to the Gloam-Eyed Queen, and Melina: gravity and ravens—and both of these are hinted at in the word raven.
2) Quantum foam
Next, I'd like to propose a more physical explanation for the description on the Primeval Current "becoming real". This idea came to mind after I left a comment on the visibility of the Erdtree, explaining that when viewed through the telescope, the Erdtree will only ever appear as solid. The user "flowbro (kirby)" suggested this could be a representation of the wave function collapse, since the Erdtree only becomes "real" when it's observed. The particular quantum theory referenced is the Copenhagen interpretation.
I believe the same principle could apply to the Primeval Current, and that the Current is quantum potential that only becomes determinate when interacted with: in this case, when observed visually. More evidence is that quantum potential is sometimes called "quantum foam". Both foam and currents are liquid, and part of water systems. Foam in particular ties into one of the ideas below.
3) Outer space
Last Protagonist has shown that Japanese descriptions of Astel more explicitly associate him with darkness, which is what the Primeval Current is said to contain per the description of Comet Azur. Since space is darkness, and both Astel and the Primeval Current are thematically linked to fear, this seems to narrow the conceptual gap between the Primeval Current and outer space in general, and could mean they're same thing. I don't think I'm the first to suggest this; to my recollection it was M00n_Slippers.
4) Aether
The above theory makes more sense when we consider that outer space was once thought to contain a medium called aether, which was believed to be a liquid. The aether theory, like the belief that the stars were deities, is an older and thus comparatively primeval understanding of the cosmos.
5) Vacuum space
Suppose that outer space in Elden Ring does not contain aether or current, and that it's nothing but darkness and void. Purely empty space is called a vacuum. Vacuums suck things in, which would hypothetically create a current. So the Primeval Current could be the movement created from empty space itself. Alternatively, since vacuum space has no color, i.e. is black, maybe the current instead produces black holes—which would bring us back to the gravity interpretation.
6) Tides
I've also theorized that the Primeval Current could be the ocean's tides, in a post about how Elden Ring's moon has imprinted on it a part of the gravity sigil. In a comment on this post, slapmyasswithtuna pointed out what this meant: the gravity sigil is on the moon because the moon exerts a significant gravitational effqect on Earth, and vice-versa. From this I proposed that the Primeval Current could be the tides, as well as Destined Death, as the oceans both give birth to life and return it to the ocean.
As I alluded to earlier, tides and foam are both parts of bodies of water. So it's possible these two interpretations are connected somehow. Granted, I understand that tides are probably not the Primeval Current in a universal sense, since water is not abundant in space like some of the other phenomena mentioned.
7) Liquid crystals
In an older post of mine, I played with the idea of the Flask of Wondrous Physick containing a liquid crystal substance, like in a liquid crystal display (or LCD), since it's a flask you drink from (liquid) that contains crystallized tears. The comparison to LCDs is more appropriate in the context of the Primeval Current, since the only sense used to observe the Primeval Current is sight. So it makes a surprising amount of sense that the Primeval Current, a
liquid, is
displayed to sorcerers who are made of
crystal. (Also, this is a dumb thought but LCD is one letter away from LSD, which I think is more or less what looking at the Primeval Current is like.)
In summary, I think the Primeval Current could be any or all of the following: imagination, collective consciousness, quantum foam, gravity, outer space, vacuum space, aether, tides, and a liquid-crystal substance.
More on nature In Elden Ring, liquids can potentially turn to stone if they're left stagnant. My evidence for this is the stone columns in the Lake of Rot, which are very likely petrified trees, since their cross sections on the map look the same as Godwyn's tree and the Erdtree in Deeproot Depths. I believe this indicates that rot, i.e. stagnation, turns things to stone by killing them, resulting in petrification. Thus, it seems that the slowing of current produces stone, which I believe is also occurring psychologically as the Primeval sorcerers meditate. That stagnation can turn liquid to stone could be expressing how different energies and particle motions are required for liquid and solid states.
The reverse is more intuitively true, and true to life: increasing the "flow" of stone, i.e. by heating it up, would energize the particles and melt the stone, resulting in a current. To me this sounds very similar to the function of the Crucible.
Something else I find interesting about the Wisdom of Stone is that it simultaneously seems to obey and fight against the Primeval Current. Of course the two are connected, and might even be the same because that's a huge theme in Elden Ring. But still, a solid is nonetheless considered an opposite of liquid. This inconsistent relationship might be expressed through the Primeval sorcerers seeking wisdom in the Current, but also hiding from it in the Wisdom of Stone.
This relationship can be visualized a little more clearly if we imagine the Wisdom of Stone singularly as stone (easy enough), and the Primeval Current
variably as water and gravity. (I like this framework because the Wisdom of Stone is appropriately interpreted as a static concept, while the Primeval Current is interpreted dynamically, like liquid.)
Stone obeys gravity because it falls, is heavy, etc. But in an environment like a river, stones
resist current and force it to move around it. The former example would represent the Primeval Current and Wisdom of Stone as a unified entity, while the latter would express their opposition.
As such, it could be said that the movement of the stone coffins from the edge of the falls to over them represents the switch from resisting the Primeval Current to submitting to it. (Credit again to M00n_Slippers.) I think this transition could also tie into the Primeval sorcerers "seeing beyond" the Wisdom of Stone. If the Wisdom of Stone is also something that must be surpassed, in addition to sought, maybe the interpretation that must be overcome is the idea of stone resisting flow—in exchange for the view that stone must submit to it.
Note: I did check the waterfalls in the underground, and unfortunately for this theory, the water is flowing under the coffins unobstructed. Or, if miirshroom's theory is right ("The Prisoner of Fate, the Primeval Current, and the Elden Ring"), and overcoming the Wisdom of Stone involves overcoming gravity, perhaps the aim of this intellectual journey is to understand that gravity and currents can be reversed, and are bidirectional. This could be evidenced by the cutscenes where we
ascend the waterfall in the stone coffin. The pull of the current in both directions could be compared to the alabaster and onyx lord's pull/repulsion, which likewise map onto regression and causality. Since both are required to "be complete", maybe the key to enlightenment is understanding that forces which submit to and oppose the Primeval Current are equally important, and must both be integrated.
Religious and cultural inspirations The duality of the Primeval Current and Wisdom of Stone might have been inspired by the Biblical account of Moses striking the rock with his staff, and releasing the water inside. The game already has the ancient dynast, who looks a good deal like the common image of Moses holding the Ten Commandments.
The typological parallel between this story and the water that poured from Jesus's body when he was speared may have been made more explicit through the fact that Marika, who is also crucified and speared, is made of stone. Thus, since Marika is a vessel of the Elden Ring, i.e. a crucible, she might contain the Primeval Current within her: the Elden Beast, which is filled with stars. The possibility of the Elden Beast being the Primeval Current was suggested by Gideon the Half-Knowing, who in her first lore video (called "Elden Ring Lore in a Very Large Nutshell") pointed out the significance of Sellen's request to us, that we "lay bare the secrets of life which course the Elden Ring", i.e. the Elden Beast. (In case this wasn't noticed: a current is something that "courses".)
I'd be remiss if I didn't try connecting the "draining of liquid from stone" concept with the visual of cracked crucibles spilling their contents, which I recently discovered is a very important symbol in the game. So I think that the Primeval Current emerging from cracks in the Wisdom of Stone (if that part is right) is equivalent to the leaking of fluid from stone crucibles.
Another reference material for the Primeval Current may have been Stanley Kubrick's
2001: A Space Odyssey. This is something I'd considered early on, but there's more evidence for it than I thought. On its face, the Primeval Current has a good deal in common with the torrent of stars in the Stargate sequence, which is part of the third act of the movie, called "Jupiter, and Beyond the Infinite". Both are experienced as an overload of consciousness: otherworldly, overwhelming, and terrifying. And the variously colored stars and celestial phenomena in the Stargate sequence potentially tie into Elden Ring's emphasis on color.
blue crystals in the Stargate In addition to stars, the Stargate contains blue octahedral shapes; these influenced Laputa's blue crystalline energy source in Hayao Miyazaki's
Castle in the Sky. In Elden Ring there's an association between 8-pointed shapes and stars, and similar to
2001, there's a juxtaposition of current (colors, stars, etc.) with
blue crystals, in particular. The coupling of red and blue in the segment shown above might be significant, as this is probably the most fundamental color pairing in Elden Ring. You can even see a bit of purple in the shot above!
There's more evidence that Elden Ring is taking notes from
2001. Others have compared the game's memory stones to the film's black monoliths. In the movie, the Stargate sequence is initiated by the monolith rotating on its side (so the audience is only looking at its depth), causing it to blend in with the blackness of space. Almost immediately after is the emergence of light and color from the void, which suggests the stars could be emerging because of (or from) the monolith, which is what triggers evolution and higher consciousness in the movie. Here again, we have a liquid emerging from stone. (The root 'lith' in 'monolith' means "stone.")
There is yet another possible media inspiration behind the Primeval Current. Azur's and Lusat's skulls turned to crystal—which could be a reference to
Indiana Jones and the Legend of the Crystal Skull, which, like
2001 and
Hellraiser, is about forbidden knowledge/experience that destroys people.
To conclude: Given what I wrote in the earlier section about current turning to stone, and in this section about stone releasing water, it could be said that stone is what
contains the Primeval Current, as well as
what it turns into.

2023.05.19 18:39 FantasyGirl17 Things future contestants can learn from ----
Buddha!
Regardless of how far he makes it this season, it's been so impressive watching him compete and for me, he goes down in the hall of fame of TC Goats. I feel like future contestants can definitely learn things from him but what I love the most is how respectful and humble he is and that while he's so competitive, he's always so supportive of his teammates and leads with no ego. Like so many past TC winners, who in my book are all-stars, have struggled with leading teams (Kristin K) or snapping/having an ego(Micheal V), but Buddha just always remains professional, kind, consistent, efficient and pushes his teammates to make himself and them better.
Things to learn from watching him:
- How to be an effective, respectful, successful team leader that pushes back, compromises without losing integrity of the dish (ie May/Dale, AmaSarah with the lamb check), keeps team members in check, executes on vision and components and doing it all while being calm, kind, respectful, and making team members feel heard and seen.
- Making sure you come into TC with a roledex of desserts and dishes/or elements that will help you stand out in a crowd ( how do you make a standard steamed hotpot dish a winner for a Michelin star chef in a quickfire? oh just add some radish dumplings - guarantee that's not the first time he made that)
- Bringing a high level of technique (tom SMELLS this..his face when he was asking Buddha about his wellies and how he was trying not to smile), precision, practicing, and making sure that Tom C doesn't ask questions without asking questions
- Researching local cuisine and dishes extensively and practicing (to be fair, Buddha worked in Michelin British kitchens and has the background but it still amazes me that neither Sara nor Amar practiced wellingtons before coming onto a season in the UK)
- RANGE! This means just not in technique and cuisines, but cultural influences, types of dishes (from street food to high level Michelin dining)
- Whatever Buddha does to remain focused, CALM, steely-eyed and efficient in a high pressure cooker situation. Maybe he meditates? Maybe he's born with it. IDK but it's working and Dawn needs to have a convo with him.
- Constant learning/exposure: One thing I've learned from following Buddha on IG is that he also follows a million people on IG and is always eating, experiencing new dishes, traveling. following chefs, dining with them, exposing himself to tons of different foods, cultures, dishes, etc., I think all chefs do this, because they love food and it helps them be a better chef, but it's very obvious Buddha is always learning. Definitely traveling, eating out, etc., requires access and $ that not all chefs can afford or take the time to indulge in, but definitely interesting to see how much culture Buddha exposes to himself to, and expanding on an already diverse background that ranges several countries and everything from a casual Chinese kitchen to michelin star kitchens in top culinary cities.
IDK what else???

2023.05.19 16:34 NaieraDK Ginny & Georgia renewed for TWO more seasons at Netflix
I know a lot of peeps here like G&G because it has so many Degrassi alumni and because it's also just a really good show.
The other day, it was renewed for season 3 and 4! Woo!
For those who don't know, Ginny & Georgia is a family comedy drama with a very dark twist, featuring Sara Waisglass (Frankie), Chelsea Clark (Esme) and Raymond Ablack (Sav) in important roles. Sara in particular absolutely murders as Maxine.
They shoot in Ontario, so the show has tons of Canadian actors, including Raymond's sister Rebecca and other actors who've had minor parts on Degrassi.
It's not Degrassi, but all the Degrassians in there make the loss of the reboot a little easier to bear 😉 😭

2023.05.15 22:02 jigsawjagsaw2 Reflections on a Setback
Hi everyone,
Firstly I'd like to say I hope everyone reading this is doing well. By just being on this subreddit, you're taking steps to improve yourself and you deserve credit for that. Keep going.
On Sunday night I had a setback. I was 12 days into a p* free streak. I had just had a weekend where I achieved goals and generally had a lovely time. Sunday night arrived, and I was stressed about the weekend ending. I found myself watching some YouTube videos in bed, and old habits kicked in.
Today (Monday) I had another setback. Today was stressful, but not in the ways I expected it to be. I'm taking on a huge and important task at work, but my main issue today was the conversations I was having in my head. I felt incredibly lonely and found myself rehearsing conversations with friends. I felt unable to break that cycle.
I'm going to use Sara Brewer's 4 step method from her podcast episode What to do when you Slip Up" (
https://www.sarabrewer.com/blog/when-you-slip-up). One tip she gives is to 'watch yourself and don't fall into self-pity', so I will try my best to do that here.
1. Notice what emotions come to the surface. The emotions on the surface, as in the emotions I was demonstrating if you were to speak to me, were quite dulled but this is what I was feeling internally:
On Sunday:
- an underlying restlessness
- general frustration and irritability
- world-weariness and a feeling of being trapped in a cycle where I fall behind
- daunted by having to deal with financial responsibilities
- physical fatigue
- depression
On Monday:
- heightened stress and irritability
- feeling less-than my peers
- a feeling of 'how am I going to justify what I am?'
- disappointment in my decision making
- embarrassment at perceived underachievements
- resentment at not having opportunities I feel I deserved
- overstimulated from coffee/caffeine
- a desire to be alone
- embarrassment at my body. I felt really out of shape and old
- deep depression
2. Write down what happened The Triggers I suppose the triggers were seeing attractive women in public and having sexual thoughts. I felt that I'd earned a treat after making some really great progress over the last month or so.
My Thoughts and Justifications I wanted more of the dopamine I felt from those moments. In hindsight, it didn't have much to do with any authentic sexual desire. It was purely a desire for a buffer.
The beginning of the active use of p* was to seek out an OF content creator on Reddit. She was the last person I subscribed to on OF before quitting. Spending an obscene amount of money on that hellsite was one of my reasons for wanting to quite p* entirely, but I told myself I wanted to test how far I'd come in the last month or so. The conversation around ethics of OF content creators is for another day, but I have to say even though I felt aroused, it was not as strong as expected. I could see that her content was inherently manipulative and I felt used and exploited. This turned me off and I finished without p*, but my streak was over.
On Monday I straight up did not fucking care. I'd had it with how I was feeling and I wanted to feel good. Fuck the consequences, I knew I'd hold myself accountable. I was resolutely determined to feel that pleasure hit and there was no one around to stop me.
3. Forgive yourself and the situation, and move on Right now it's taking a lot of effort to forgive myself. But, I'm trying.
I've had a hard times down the years and my brain wanting dopamine is a sign that it's working correctly. Berating myself for this setback is only going to make recovery more difficult, so I won't do that.
I've leaned on p* during some very difficult times. These were times where I was not supported by others, and did not know how to support myself. It's only with hindsight that I realise how difficult those times actually were. In some ways, I feel lucky that I developed a p* habit rather than something like a drugs or alcohol dependancy. I certainly feel that I have the strength to keep improving and to live a fuller life and I'm grateful to myself for the steps I've taken so far.
I've developed a lot of inner strength and self forgiveness is the key to unlocking it.
Climbing a mountain begins with a single step.
I love who I am and I can beat this fucker.
4. Decide what to do next time I saw a post on here where someone said their coping method was to picture themself as an old, lonely man doing the same thing: sat in front of a screen mast*rbating while life happens around him. Terrifying but effective. I think I'll try to remember that one.
Mindfulness meditation is something I've had a lot of joy with so perhaps doing a short breathing excercise would be good. As would having a cold shower.
Overuse of screentime is a huge trigger, so perhaps ditching technology for an hour or two could work too.
I'll return to this post and this subreddit, or perhaps listen to one of Sara Brewer's podcasts.
Concluding thoughts If you've read this, thank you for taking the time to do so. Progress isn't linear, but we're all going in the right direction. Keep going.

2023.05.14 20:21 Dryadversity The nature and psychology of the Primeval Current, and its opposition to Raya Lucaria
(Garrulous_Goldmask however has found connections between the Primeval Current and yoga; so there's a good example of Eastern influence.) Cattell's model was later incorporated into a larger theoretical framework called Cattell-Horn-Carrol theory, which is probably the most widely accepted model of intelligence in the West. This is most explicit in the description of Comet Azur, which reads: " When Azur glimpsed into the primeval current, he saw darkness. Originally—before I checked and realized that Azur and Lusat are wearing veils—I thought their eyes were covered by their crystal headpieces. https://preview.redd.it/pwf9o7s21uza1.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e08f5159e2d193a6b7a38cd1a08583b002caa1a6 The cloth blinds could be the Primeval sorcerer variant of the blinds worn Two Fingers prophets. It's also possible the blinds were used to enhance one's vision into the Primeval Current. This thematic pairing is repeated in the coffin cutscenes played when traversing the waterfalls: paradoxically, the coffin—a symbol of stone, death and fear—is entered in order to avoid death. However, the primary evidence for this theory is the description of the Founding Rain of Stars: "The glimpse of the primeval current that the astrologer saw became real, and the stars' amber rained down on this land." If the glimpse of the Primeval Current is something that became real, this would suggest it was something unreal to begin with. I've also been thinking that the influence of Lovecraft on the Primeval Current could be a hint that it's rooted in the imagination. This is because what breaks the minds of Lovecraft's characters is the inability to comprehend, i.e. to imagine, the deities described. A similar kind of brain-blasting horror exists in Hellraiser, which was an influence on Elden Ring as well as Berserk. Stars, for a significant length of history, were indeed interpreted as living things: as gods and mythological figures. Sellen's graven mass Since the graven masses are collections of heads (and minds), and these heads seem to be severed from the rest of the body, I think the idea is that they are simultaneously the result of knowing too much, and of consequently "losing their heads", thus ultimately knowing nothing. As it pertains to psychology though, or at least idioms about it, I think the joke is that Sellen "opened her mind so much her brain fell out." Despite the symbolism of the graven mass, it's been speculated that Sellen's experiment may have been a success. The Nature of the Primeval Current 1.) Gravity I've talked about the connection between gravity and the Primeval Current before, so here I'll add something I haven't shared yet: 'Graven' and 'gravity' start with the same letters. The user Kotoy77 recently submitted a post showing that Azur is levitating. This means both Azur and Lusat have associations with gravity, and that this could be true for the Primeval Current as well. Sidenote: Azur's and Lusat's robes have crow/raven feathers, which explains Azur being on Mt. Gelmir and provides a connection to the assassins of Ravenmount, who wear the Raptor's Black Feathers. This also strengthens the link between the Current and Gloam-Eyed Queen, who has many associations with Gelmir. 2) Outer space Last Protagonist has shown that Japanese descriptions of Astel more explicitly associate him with darkness, which is what the Primeval Current is said to contain per the description of Comet Azur. 3) Aether The above theory makes more sense when we consider that outer space was once thought to contain a medium called aether, which was believed to be a liquid. The aether theory, like the belief that the stars were deities, is an older and thus comparatively primeval understanding of the cosmos. 4) Vacuum space Suppose that outer space in Elden Ring does not contain aether or current, and that it's nothing but darkness and void. 5) Tides I've also theorized that the Primeval Current could be the ocean's tides, in a post about how Elden Ring's moon has imprinted on it a part of the gravity sigil. In a comment on this post, slapmyasswithtuna pointed out what this meant: the gravity sigil is on the moon because the moon exerts a significant gravitational effect on Earth, and vice-versa. From this I proposed that the Primeval Current could be the tides, as well as Destined Death, as the oceans both give birth to life and return it to the ocean. 6) Liquid crystals In an older post of mine, I played with the idea of the Flask of Wondrous Physick containing a liquid crystal substance, like in a liquid crystal display (or LCD), since it's a flask you drink from (liquid) that contains crystallized tears. The comparison to LCDs is more appropriate in the context of the Primeval Current, since the only sense used to observe the Primeval Current is sight. So it makes a surprising amount of sense that the Primeval Current, a liquid, is displayed to sorcerers who are made of crystal. (Also, this is a dumb thought but LCD is one letter away from LSD, which I think is more or less what looking at the Primeval Current is like.) In summary, I think the Primeval Current could be any or all of the following: imagination, collective consciousness, gravity, outer space, vacuum space, aether, tides, and a liquid-crystal substance. This relationship can be visualized a little more clearly if we imagine the Wisdom of Stone singularly as stone (easy enough), and the Primeval Current variably as water and gravity. (I like this framework because the Wisdom of Stone is appropriately interpreted as a static concept, while the Primeval Current is interpreted dynamically, like liquid.) Stone obeys gravity because it falls, is heavy, etc. But in an environment like a river, stones resist current and force it to move around it. Or, if miirshroom's theory is right and overcoming the Wisdom of Stone involves overcoming gravity, perhaps the aim of this intellectual journey is to understand that gravity and currents can be reversed, and are bidirectional. This could be evidenced by the cutscenes where we ascend the waterfall in the stone coffin. The possibility of the Elden Beast being the Primeval Current was suggested by Gideon the Half-Knowing, who pointed out the significance of Sellen's request to us, that we "lay bare the secrets of life which course the Elden Ring", i.e. the Elden Beast. (In case this wasn't noticed: a current is something that "courses".) I'd be remiss if I didn't try connecting the "draining of liquid from stone" concept with the visual of cracked crucibles spilling their contents, which I recently discovered is a very important symbol in the game. So I think that the Primeval Current emerging from cracks in the Wisdom of Stone (if that part is right) is equivalent to the leaking of fluid from stone crucibles. Another reference material for the Primeval Current may have been Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. And the variously colored stars and celestial phenomena in the Stargate sequence potentially tie into Elden Ring's emphasis on color. crystals from 2001: A Space Odyssey In addition to stars, the Stargate contains blue octahedral shapes; these influenced Laputa's crystalline energy source in Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky. In Elden Ring there's an association between 8-pointed shapes and stars, and similar to 2001, there's a juxtaposition of current (colors, stars, etc.) with blue crystals, in particular. The coupling of red and blue in the segment shown above might be significant, as this is probably the most fundamental color pairing in Elden Ring. You can even see a bit of purple in the shot above! There's more evidence that Elden Ring is taking notes from 2001. (The root 'lith' in 'monolith' means "stone.") There is yet another possible media inspiration behind the Primeval Current. Azur's and Lusat's skulls turned to crystal—which could be a reference to Indiana Jones and the Legend of the Crystal Skull, which, like 2001 and Hellraiser, is about forbidden knowledge/experience that destroys people. To conclude: Given what I wrote in the earlier section about current turning to stone, and in this section about stone releasing water, it could be said that stone is what contains the Primeval Current, as well as what it turns into. Differences with Raya Lucaria After understanding more clearly that the Primeval sorcerers view stars as sentient, and that many glintstone sorcerers do not, I started to notice the bifurcation of sorceries which could be loosely described as stellar (Primeval) and the remaining glintstone sorceries. For example, every spell that mentions stars or celestial objects is part of either the Olivinus or Karolos conspectuses, i.e. Lusat's or Azur's. The one exception is the spell Starlight, but this is said to be " Granted to sorcerers who depart from the academy to embark on journeys." I interpret this as saying it was given to exiled sorcerers, similar to how the Hierodas glintstone crown may have been given to outcast scholars, or how the red hood was granted to Roderika as part of her banishment. Thus, I believe this sorcery is closer to the Primeval conspectuses than it originally seems. Sidenote: the remainder of the description for Starlight reads: " Even during the blackest nights, sojourns underground, or imprisonment in gaol, the stars are never far from a sorcerer's side." I believe the second part is pretty clearly alluding to Lusat, and the first part is probably referencing the Nox, if it's not also about Lusat. I'm not sure if it's saying Lusat was using the stars as guidance/comfort, or if this is "dark" humor, since I've theorized Lusat might be running from the stars instead. (To be clear, what Lusat observed in the Primeval Current was not the abyssal darkness Azur saw, but a shattering star cluster.) In opposition to the Primeval sorcerers, the glintstone sorcerers use spells and abilities that emphasize the concreteness, physicality and terrestrial nature of their worldview. One example is the Cannon of Haima spell, which is a mortar attack. Mortar is both the material used to bind stones together, as well as a bowl, like a crucible (e.g. in a mortar and pestle). Another important example is the glintstone drills used by the miners, and the act of mining glintstone itself. Sellia Crystal Tunnel I think the glintstone mining might represent, among other things, the pillaging of the earth. The Elden Beast, as many have noticed, looks a great deal like the Forest God from Princess Mononoke. And as mentioned, in Sellen's penultimate dialogue she hints she might know something about the Elden Beast. Sellen of course has a worldview that integrates the stars; now, in addition, she is associated with the Elden Beast, which resembles the Forest God. The glintstone sorcerers are the inversion of this, and are closer instead to Lady Uboshi and Irontown. They mine for natural resources, at the price of damaging the earth. The product is glintstone sorcery, i.e. a technological transformation of a natural material, like the use of iron in firearms. (By the way, Sekiro, which was developed simultaneously with Elden Ring, has its own version of Irontown: the Gun Fort.) An interesting case to consider is the sorcerers' head-butt attack. I think this attack could parallel their book-smack move, because books, like stone, contain wisdom (e.g. the stone on the glintstone crowns) and would thus serve as appropriate weapons. The books might be symbolic of something else, too: the transition from looking up at the sky, as an astrologer would, to looking down, toward the earth, and learning from what is recorded, and "set in stone". In this sense, they are quite similar to the miners, who they likewise look down upon. I believe Sellen's criticisms of the bookworm scholars is showing the contrast between learning from direct experience, and learning from study. Remember as well that Sellen detests the "pedantry" of the academy. Pedantry is placing too much attention on semantics: in this context, runes, language, etc. Scholars reading in Raya Lucaria "Toothless pedantry" is a brilliant insult. First, it implies the Primeval Current is toothed, like the Crucible, and thus may be associated with it in some way. Moreover, it suggests the Academy is talking (pedantry) without teeth, which would make their ideas difficult to understand—since teeth, in addition to biting, chewing, etc., also help us annunciate. It's another criticism of corrupted intellectualism that references another common saying about intellectuals: that they "talk much while saying little". Probably the best example of the distinction between the Primeval and glintstone sorcerers, within Raya Lucaria, is the Church of the Cuckoo. For this topic I'd like to reference and thank Lutana who came up with an amazing theory on the significance of the cuckoo and let me reference their idea. They suggested it might be a symbol of insanity, and that Raya Lucaria might be something like a mental institution, referencing Bloodborne's upper Cathedral Ward and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. On its face this might not make sense, because we know Raya Lucaria banished the Primeval sorcerers for their association with the Primeval Current. But this interpretation actually helps to explain many things about the Church of the Cuckoo. It explains why the only graven mass in Raya Lucaria is found in a room connected to and only accessible through the Church. Above this graven mass is the only place that artificial stars can be found in the academy. It explains why there's a Crystalian sorcery on the upper level, why the Twinsage conspectus crown is found right outside the Church, and why the only two Olivinus conspectus sorcerers in Raya Lucaria are inside the church. The Olivinus conspectus was dedicated to the study of meteors, which are the same as stars, because meteors are shooting stars. Here is an Olivinus conspectus sorcerer in the Church of the Cuckoo. Note: I later found Olivinus conspectus crowns on the wall of glintstone crowns before the Red Wolf of Radagon fight, but these are just masks and aren't worn by the sorcerers here. To my understanding, this means these two sorcerers are the only ones in Raya Lucaria to use star sorceries; though the twinsage sorcerers seem to use crystal spells, which are Primeval. This isn't too surprising though, since we know the Twinsage sorcerers were granted the privilege of using sorceries of all kinds. The Church of the Cuckoo being dedicated to the Primeval Current might also have something to do with the Inverted Carian Statue on the altar, since the Carians' moon-focused ideology was viewed as opposing the Primeval Current, with its emphasis on stars. My guess is that the church was an original part of the academy, since the academy used to permit investigation into the Primeval Current. The church wouldn't have been used for this purpose during Rennala's leadership, but it may have regressed to its original function once Rennala was overthrown. Maybe this is what the inverted statue represents. Something I find intriguing about Rennala's ascension in the academy is that it suggests the sorcerers of the old academy were partially justified in their fear of the moon being made equal to the stars. The theorist St. Trina postulated this could represent the fear of feminism and equal rights, with stars being masculine and the moon feminine. Feminism and other movements centered around social equality have often been denigrated as attempts to make the disadvantaged group in question superior to the advantaged group. This seems to be what the stellar sorcerers were afraid of—but ironically I think this actually happened in the case of Raya Lucaria. Rennala's full moon was said to "bewitch" the academy; but Rennala is in fact a witch, since she is a magic-wielding woman. Moreover, as stated earlier... there is only one place in Raya Lucaria that contains stars, and that's in the Church of the Cuckoo. On the other hand, astronomical devices containing the moon are found in multiple places in the academy (you can see one on the Raya Lucaria loading screen). Here's a thought: if stars are interpreted as masculine, then the Church of the Cuckoo might also in some sense be loyal to Radagon. The sun is a star, and Radagon is associated with the sun, particularly in Liurnia where the Erdtree and moon form an eclipse. People have also speculated that Radagon might be the cuckoo, since he leaves Rennala the golden egg. (This interpretation seems to have obscured the insanity theory; in retrospect, Iji's pronunciation of the word cuckoo as "coo-coo" makes the association a bit clearer.) So I think that even if the Church of the Cuckoo was not originally built to worship Radagon, it may have become compatible with this purpose as a place for worship of the masculine spirit, which might have been desirable to those dissatisfied with Rennala's moon-themed (feminine) leadership. Yet, both objects of worship can eventually result in insanity: star worship leads to graven masses and lost heads, while moon worship leads to lunacy. (Rennala's "diagnosis", other than lunacy, is probably hysteria, since as Miss Chalice pointed out, she caresses the amber egg like it's her pregnant abdomen. And the word 'hysteria' is etymologically linked to the uterus.) Post is continued in the comments below. Radagon's statue placement kind of makes it look like he's pulling her strings. Update: I'd like to propose a more physical explanation for the description on the Primeval Current "becoming real". The quantum mechanical theory in question is the Copenhagen interpretation. I believe the same principle could apply to the Primeval Current, and that the Current is quantum potential that only becomes determinate when interacted with: in this case, when observed visually. More evidence is that quantum potential is sometimes called "quantum foam". Both foam and currents are liquid, and part of water systems. Foam in particular ties into the tidal theory of the Primeval Current, described above. Update 2: I missed something on the relation between the Primeval Current and Raya Lucaria. The Primeval sorcerers are astrologers, and seek to make the culture of sorcery more like it used to be, when it was integrated with astrology. Since Elden Ring is a medieval fantasy, I had just assumed that astrology was the closest thing in the Lands Between to astronomy. But I think I was overlooking how astrology is the more ancient, primeval basis for astronomy. The Primeval Sorcerers may seek a revival of astrology because it is older and more magical than the current magical culture, which is analogous to astronomy: resolutely unmagical. submitted by Dryadversity to EldenRingLoreTalk [link] [comments] |

2023.05.07 14:16 chocolatemilkkkkk All Ace Attorney name puns (AA1-AA4, Investigations 1+2)
I've made a compilation of all pun names in the series from AA1-AA4, and including the two Investigations games. I haven't played Spirit of Justice and Dai Gyakuten Saiban/The Great Ace Attorney games yet, (and to be honest I just couldn't be bothered to do Dual Destinies) so they're not included.
All spoilers will be tagged (if I've missed any possible spoilers, please tell me and I'll edit the post - also I'm sorry for it being laid out weird - formatting this post is a NIGHTMARE on mobile). I think I've included all characters (including the animals) but again, if I've missed any, let me know. I've tried to figure out exactly why the characters are named the way they are, and how it links to their story/personality, but I'm pretty sure there's no significance behind a few of them, like Cindy Stone and Romein Letouse. A few are probably stretches too tbh.
I've used a few sources for these, like courtrecords.net, the Ace Attorney wiki pages, and my own personal interpretations - I just thought it would be useful to compile them all into one post to save going back and forth from source to source. The focus is on the characters' English names (and the fan translated names in the case of Gyakuten Kenji 2/Ace Attorney Investigations 2), but I might mention a few similarities to their original Japanese names here and there.
Also play Ace Attorney Investigations 2 if you haven't already. I can't recommend it enough, and the fan translation is amazing. Definitely the best game in the series imo.
AA1-1: THE FIRST TURNABOUT
• Phoenix Wright - The phoenix is a mythical bird that can revive itself by rising from the ashes of it's own death, referencing Phoenix's ability to turn cases around when it seems hopeless (like a phoenix rising from the dead). Wright is a pun ("Isn't that right, Wright?" and "I'm always Wright.")
• Mia Fey - M.I.A. (Missing In Action, because she dies pretty much straight away - don't think I need to spoiler tag that lmao) - it's also an anagram of her ancestor, Ami Fey. A fae is a mythical creature, in reference to the Fey family's supernatural abilities, and her surname may also reference Morgan le Fay, the sorceress from the legend of King Arthur. An archaic meaning of Fey is "sickly" or "fated to die soon", but this seems to mainly apply to Mia, not the other Feys. Fey can also mean "able to see into the future/visionary" and "marked by an otherworldly air or attitude", which applies to all of the Feys. I'm not really going into their Japanese names in this post but I want to mention Mia's because I think it's cool - her Japanese name is Ayasato Chihiro, which means "a thousand questions" and references her technique of pressing every statement made by the witness.
• Larry Butz - Hairy butts (Mia and Gumshoe even call him Harry). Larry may reference the phrase "happy as Larry", used to refer to someone who is happy and carefree.
• Cindy Stone - Cinder blocks
• Frank Sahwit - He's a witness to a crime - he "saw it".
• Judge - Self-explanatory.
• Winston Payne - "Winced in pain". Could be "wins (a) ton", which is ironic since he always loses.
AA1-2: TURNABOUT SISTERS
• Maya Fey - Similar to the name Mia, and Maya is Sanskrit for illusion (maybe because in her introduction, the illusion is created that she killed her sister?) A fae is a mythical creature, in reference to the Fey family's supernatural abilities, and her surname may also reference Morgan le Fay, the sorceress from the legend of King Arthur. Fey can also mean "able to see into the future/visionary" and "marked by an otherworldly air or attitude", which applies to all of the Feys.
• Miles Edgeworth - Miles comes from the Latin word for 'soldier', referring to his serious nature - it may also refer to the long, emotional journeys he faces. Edgeworth can be broken down into edge (referencing his sharp mind) and worth (his worthiness of being Phoenix's rival). His nickname 'Edgy' means tense, nervous or irritable (due to him seeming angry/moody to others)
• Dick Gumshoe - Dick and Gumshoe are both slang terms for private detectives (gumshoe is used to refer to the soft-soled shoes that detectives wear). And, as Edgeworth says in 3-5, "Like gum on your shoe, he's impossible to get rid of!" since he's in basically every case.
• April May - The months April and May
• Redd White - Red, White and Blue (his company, Bluecorp) likely reference the American flag due to being a stereotype of an obnoxious American.
• Bellboy - Self-explanatory
• Marvin Grossberg - Großberg is german for 'large mountain', referencing his large physique.
• Misty Fey - Misty is similar to 'mystery' or 'mistify'. A fae is a mythical creature, in reference to the Fey family's supernatural abilities, and her surname may also reference Morgan le Fay, the sorceress from the legend of King Arthur. An archaic meaning of Fey is "sickly" or "fated to die soon", fitting in Misty's case. Fey can also mean "able to see into the future/visionary" and "marked by an otherworldly air or attitude", which applies to all of the Feys.
AA1-3: TURNABOUT SAMURAI
• Will Powers - Willpower
• Jack Hammer - Jackhammer
• Wendy Oldbag - Windy old bag.
• Penny Nichols - Pennies and nickels (coins - reference her being a collector)
• Cody Hackins - Code hacker (reference to computer hacking)
• Sal Manella - Salmonella
• Dee Vasquez - Diva, or divaesque.
• Manuel - Unknown
AA1-4: TURNABOUT GOODBYES
• Manfred von Karma - Man freed from karma (a reference to the bad karma he's built up over the years due to his questionable tactics, and how karma came back to bite him fifteen years after DL-6). It may be a reference to Manfred von Richthofen, the infamous Red Baron who was brought down by a single bullet similarly to von Karma. German names containing 'von' are usually names of aristocrats (von is a preposition meaning 'of' or 'from')
• Missile - The name of Shu Takumi's pomeranian. EDIT: Upon doing further research into Missile, I've discovered that it was actually Shu Takumi's dog that was named after the Ace Attorney Missile, not the other way around, with Takumi getting Missile roughly around 2007, the time Apollo Justice was coming out. The wiki suggests that the name Missile may have come from him acting like a weapon upon smelling Samurai Dogs.
• Yanni Yogi - Yanni sounds similar to 'yawny', referencing him falling asleep during conversations. A Yogi is a practitioner of yoga (associated with meditation)
• Polly (Jenkins) - Classic name for a parrot
• Gregory Edgeworth - Gregory may be taken from the actor Gregory Peck who played the famous lawyer character, Atticus Finch, in How to Kill a Mockingbird (who Gregory visually resembles, I guess?). Edgeworth can be broken down into edge (referencing his sharp mind) and worth (his worthiness of being von Karma's rival).
• Lotta Hart - She puts "a lot of heart" into what she does
• Robert Hammond - Unknown.
AA1-5: RISE FROM THE ASHES
• Ema Skye - Skye is a reflection of her Japanese given name 'Akane', which comes from the phrase "akane sasu sora" ("a glowing sky").
• Lana Skye - Skye is a reflection of her Japanese given name 'Akane', which comes from the phrase "akane sasu sora" ("a glowing sky").
• Jake Marshall - A marshal is an old West lawman (though many are still used in US law enforcement). Jake might be 'fake' - 'fake marshall' (since he broke the law by trying to steal evidence, rather than protecting the law) As a surname, Marshall originally meant somebody in charge of the horses that belonged to a royal household, fitting with his cowboy theme. Another potential inspiration for his surname is James W. Marshall, the person who first discovered gold in the California Gold Rush, as Jake frequently references gold and prospectors (excavators) - "The goldmine is... evidence", "Welcome to our gold strike." and "Why do prospectors head west?" It is also similar to 'martial', which means something is related to fighting or war.
• Neil Marshall - A marshal is an old West lawman (though many are still used in US law enforcement) Neil might be 'real' - 'real marshall' (since he upholds the law more than his brother.) As a surname, Marshall originally meant somebody in charge of the horses that belonged to a royal household, fitting with his cowboy theme. It is also similar to 'martial', which means something is related to fighting or war.

Von is a preposition meaning 'of' or 'from', often used in the names of German aristocrats. Karma refers to the bad karma her father built up over the years.
• Pearl Fey - Pearls are precious, and Pearl is also the name of a character in the Nathaniel Hawthorne book 'The Scarlet Letter', linking her to her older sisters. She's the only known Fey family member (except Ami Fey) whose name doesn't begin with an M. A fae is a mythical creature, in reference to the Fey family's supernatural abilities, and her surname may also reference Morgan le Fay, the sorceress from the legend of King Arthur. Fey can also mean "able to see into the future/visionary" and "marked by an otherworldly air or attitude", which applies to all of the Feys.
• Morgan Fey - A reference to Morgan le Fay, the sorceress from the legend of King Arthur with a dual nature of having potential to be both good and evil (though Morgan seems to fit more with the villainous pop culture portrayal of her). A fae is a mythical creature, in reference to the Fey family's supernatural abilities. Fey can also mean "able to see into the future/visionary" and "marked by an otherworldly air or attitude", which applies to all of the Feys.

• Ini Miney - Comes from the children's rhyme "eenie meenie miney mo"
• Mimi Miney - Comes from the children's rhyme "eenie meenie miney mo"
• Turner Grey - He's a doctor, so Grey may come from Gray's Anatomy (the famous human anatomy book, not the TV show - it didn't come out until 3 years after JFA), and a "Grey's Turner Sign" is a kind of bruising around the abdomen than indicates pancreatis. Grey could also mean 'morally grey' (neither good nor evil), which he definitely is, and it sounds like 'turning grey', referring to his hair turning grey due to the stress of dealing with the malpractise incident.
• Director Hotti/Hickfield - Hotti(es) are the women he likes to work with. A hick is a country bumpkin or somebody unsophisticated and unintelligent.

His stage name is supposed to make him sound glamorous and important, but his real name is meant to make him sound like a nobody - a generic country bumpkin.
• Russel Berry - The Russel Brothers Circus is a famous circus. Berry fits with the pun in the name of his circus, "Berry big".

• Trilo Quist - Ventriloquist
AA2-4: FAREWELL, MY TURNABOUT
• Matt Engarde - The Hebrew name 'Matt' means "gift of god" (suiting Matt's self-absorbed, egotistical personality). Engarde is a French term said at the start of a battle (typically while fencing), referencing his rivalry with Corrida and being similar to Corrida (bull-fighting), both being foreign terms related to fighting. It could also reference him always being "on guard" due to his paranoia and inability to trust anyone, or it could be a hint to the player to be 'on guard' when talking to Matt.
• Juan Corrida - Corrida comes from a term in Spanish referring to bullfighting. This is similar to 'engarde' (fencing) as they both relate to fighting.
• Adrian Andrews - A traditionally masculine name (so de Killer could mistake her for a man) Adrian also means "dark one" which could denote her dark past.
• Celeste Inpax - Celeste is likely taken from celestial (meaning heavenly, as she is in heaven). Inpax is Latin for "in peace" (as in "rest in peace")
• Shelly de Killer - The killer. Shelly references the shell on his calling card. His persona when acting as Matt's butler, John Doe, is the term that police use for an unidentified dead body.
• Shoe - A reference to Shu Takumi (the director for the original trilogy + Apollo Justice)
AA3-1: TURNABOUT MEMORIES
• Dahlia Hawthorne - Dahlias are a flower that can symbolise feminine beauty (pink dahlias) and innocence (white dahlias), but also betrayal and dishonesty (red dahlias) referencing her being dishonest and betraying Phoenix. It may also be a reference to the famous unsolved murder case 'The Black Dahlia'. Her last name could be a reference to her "having thorns", but may also be a reference to famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who wrote Rappaccini's Daughter (a short story where a man falls in love with a woman who has a poison coursing through her veins and can kill anything with a touch.) Finally, it could also refer to the Hawthorne Effect, where people behave differently due to an awareness that they are being watched (like Dahlia putting on a facade in court/around Phoenix).
• Doug Swallow - "Don't swallow" or "drug swallow" (references him trying to warn Phoenix about Dahlia poisoning him)
AA3-2: THE STOLEN TURNABOUT

• Kane Bullard - Kane is likely a reference to the biblical Cain (commonly used in media for villainous/sinister characters) and Bullard may come from bully and blow-hard.

• Elise Deauxnim - Elise could be a play on 'alias', and Deauxnim sounds a lot like 'pseudonym'
AA4-1: TURNABOUT TRUMP

It also references the Apollo space program (linking to his friendship with Clay Terran, who is an astronaut). Justice is because of his profession (duh)
• Kristoph Gavin - Kristoph is a shortened and differently-spelled version of Christopher, meaning "Christ-bearing", reinforcing how he acts kind and peaceful - this religious imagery juxtaposes him being referred to as "The Devil" by Vera. His surname Gavin may come from the German word 'gewinner' (winner) or Gawain, a knight in Arthurian legend, recognised for both heroic acts and sins committed.
• Shadi Smith/Enigmar - Shady enigma. Smith is chosen as his alias because it's a generic surname.
• Olga Orly - "Oh, really?" (Apollo even says in 4-1 "Oh really, Ms. Orly?")
• Trucy Wright - Comes from true/truth. If you rearrange the syllables of Trucy, it sounds like "see true/truth" - she can "see (the) truth", or "see through" lies with her perception ability. Wright is a pun ("I'm always Wright.")
AA4-2: TURNABOUT CORNER
• Klavier Gavin - Klavier is the German word for 'piano' because he's a musician (even though he doesn't play the piano. It's like calling a drummer "Gitarre"). Gavin likely comes from the German word 'gewinner' (winner) considering it's similarity to Klavier's band, the 'Gavinners' (or it may reference Gawain, a knight in Arthurian legend, but I think this is more likely for Kristoph than Klavier).
• Wocky Kitaki - Could come from "walkie-talkie" or "walk the walk, talk the talk", meaning that if somebody talks about something, they should go through with it and do it (like how Wocky is willing to commit to his gangster lifestyle and go to prison). • Pal Meraktis - Malpractice (since he tried to cover up Wocky's failed surgery)
AA4-3: TURNABOUT SERENADE

• Lamiroir - "The mirror" in French (le miroir)
• Machi Tobaye - "Much to buy" (referencing his need for money)

• Zak Gramarye - Zak was likely just taken from his Japanese name, Zakku (which comes from Zakkubaran, meaning frankly - Valant has the other half of the name, Baran). When paired with Valant, "Zak and Valant" is a play on "knack and talent" (referenced by Phoenix in-game after unlocking Valant's psyche-locks in 4-4). Gramarye comes from 'grimoire', a book of magic.
• Valant Gramarye - Valant may come from 'valiant' (he is determined to become a great magician). When paired with Zak, "Zak and Valant" is a play on "knack and talent" (referenced by Phoenix in-game after unlocking Valant's psyche-locks in 4-4). Gramarye comes from 'grimoire', a book of magic.
AAI-1: TURNABOUT VISITOR

AAI-3: THE KIDNAPPED TURNABOUT
• Kay Faraday - Kay is a pun, similar to Wright ("You can call me Kay, 'kay?") and may reference the large key in her hair. Her surname could be a reference to the physicist Michael Faraday/the Faraday cage (used in criminal investigations to block alteration of wireless digital evidence - a technological device used in criminal investigations similar to Little Thief?) or Inspector Farraday from the Boston Blackie franchise (a thief turned detective similar to Kay's role in aiding Edgeworth in investigations). Or her full name could be a play on "okay for a day"?
• Lance Amano - Lost man? Amano comes from his Japanese surname, 'Amanogawa' (Milky Way).
• Ernest Amano - Honest/earnest man (ironic). Amano comes from his Japanese surname, 'Amanogawa' (Milky Way).
• Lauren Paups - Lollipops. Paups could be a shortened form of 'pauper' (a poor person) since her family is poor in comparison to the Amanos.

AAI-4: TURNABOUT REMINISCENCE
• Byrne Faraday - Byrne is the Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Broin, a personal name based on 'bran' (raven), linking him to the Yatagarasu. His surname could be a reference to the physicist Michael Faraday/the Faraday cage (used in criminal investigations to block alteration of wireless digital evidence - a technological device used in criminal investigations similar to Little Thief?) or Inpector Farraday from the Boston Blackie franchise (a thief turned detective)
• Tyrell Badd - "The real bad" (referencing how he is 1/3 of the Yatagarasu) or "bad trial" (the unresolved KG-8 incident). Badd could just be a modified version of his Japanese name, Badou (twisting the romanization of the word bad - 'baddo' - and coming from bird - bādo - again referencing the Yatagarasu). Similarly to Byrne's Gaelic influence, Badd may reference the 'Badb', a crow in Irish mythology.
• Calisto Yew - Could be named after Callisto of Greek mythology, whose name is derived from the Greek word 'Kalliste', meaning most beautiful (referencing her constant application of makeup), or it could refer to a Calisto butterfly. A yew is a tree/shrub of the genus Taxus - they contain highly poisonous alkaloids called taxanes, referencing her deadly nature. Both the butterfly and tree tie in with the symbols of Babahl and Allebahst, and link her to her accomplice, Quercus Alba. Her full name, Calisto Yew, could be a play on "callous to you", referencing her hostility towards Edgeworth.
• Deid Mann - Dead man

AAI2-1: TURNABOUT TARGET

AAI2-2: THE IMPRISONED TURNABOUT
• Sebastian Debeste - Sebastian may be a reference to Saint Sebastian (often depicted in art alongside bows and arrows, paralleling the bow/arrow connotation of Sebastian's Japanese name Ichiyanagi Yumihiko, which creates the expression "pulling a bow without an arrow" describing the quality of his deductions). Sebastian could also be a reference to the classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach, as Sebastian has a habit of waving a baton around like an orchestra conductor. Debeste is a play on "the best" (also Dutch for 'the best'), reflecting his desire to be better than everybody else.
• Justine Courtney - Justice and court (because she's a judge)
• Raymond Shields - Raymond means 'counselling/wise protector', referencing him protecting and carrying on Gregory Edgeworth's memory (taking over the Edgeworth Law Offices) and guiding Miles, to an extent - it may also be a reference to actor Raymond Burr who played defense attorney Perry Mason in a TV adaptation of the detective fiction books 'Perry Mason'. His nickname Ray may refer to a "ray of light", referencing his playful and optimistic personality. Shields is used to go alongside the Edgeworths' sword imagery (edges representing sharp minds, etc.)
• Sirhan Dogen - Sirhan is the name of the man who assassinated Robert F. Kennedy (with John Marsh being a reference to his brother), and is also an African name meaning 'wolf', with Dogen being a play on 'dog' and the name of a Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher. Obviously the dog and wolf reference his dog, Anubis.
• Simon Keyes - Shy Monkeys (referenced by Raymond Shields when he forgets Simon's name and calls him 'Shy Monkees). Simon may be a reference to the game 'Simon Says', where a person makes others do as they say, similar to his manipulative abilities. His surname is a subtle hint to his role in the story, with Shelly de Killer describing his client as being a "key individual".
• Jay Elbird - Jailbird
• Patricia Roland - Patrol
• Ally - Ally-gator
• Anubis - Comes from the canine-headed Egyptian God associated with the afterlife.
• Rocky - Likely a reference to the 'Rocky' film series centered around boxing, since his owner, Jay Elbird, is a boxer
• Astique - French for 'polished'
AAI2-3: THE INHERITED TURNABOUT
• Dane Gustavia - Dane is used to refer to somebody from Denmark (although he is apparently Russian), and Danish is a type of pastry, referencing his career as a pastry chef. Gustavia sounds similar to 'gustatory', a word used to refer to things associated with tasting/the sense of taste (referencing his condition, ageusia, the loss of taste)
• Pierre Hoquet - Pierre is a stereotypical French name, and Hoquet is French for 'hiccup'. His name sounds like 'Perroquet' (parrot).
• Isaac Dover - Iced over
• Jeff Masters - Chef mastemaster chef
• Katherine Hall - Catering hall
• Rip Lacer - Replacer
• Delicia Scones - Delicious scones
AAI2-4: THE FORGOTTEN TURNABOUT
• Blaise Debeste - Blaise is a play on 'blaze' due to his association with fire (especially during his breakdown), and Debeste is a play on 'the best' (due to his arrogance, believing himself to be above everybody else and abusing his power) • Jill Crane - Her name comes from the nursery rhyme 'Jack and Jill' (with her boyfriend's name being Jack), and Crane comes from Kagome Kagome, a Japanese children's game involving cranes (the bird) that her Japanese name references.
• Karin Jenson - Injection. Karin is similar to 'caring' (she is excessive in treating patients)
• Bonnie Young - Ironic name. Bonnie is a Scottish term for 'pretty/attractive' and Young is because she's old
• Dai-Long Lang - Derived from 'Dà Lóng', the Chinese reading of his Japanese name 'Rō Dairyū' (Rō meaning 'wolf' and Dairyū meaning 'big dragon')
AAI2-5: THE GRAND TURNABOUT
• John Marsh - John could be a reference to Robert F. Kennedy's older brother (with Sirhan being the name of the man who assassinated him, and also the name of the man who assassinated John Marsh's father, Di-Jun Huang). Marsh could be a reference to his Japanese surname 'Aizawa' which translates to 'fellow swamp' (a marsh being another word for swamp), or a reference to John Marston of Red Dead Redemption (which came out a year prior to AAI2), who is a cowboy (whereas Marsh is a cow-boy)
• Amy Marsh - Unknown
• Jack Cameron - His name comes from the nursery rhyme 'Jack and Jill' (with his girlfriend's name being Jill), and Cameron being a play on the camera he carried as an investigative photographer. Additionally, in the nursery rhyme, 'Jack fell down and broke his crown', dying of a head injury similarly to Cameron.
Please comment any other suggestions or interpretations, I'd love to hear them.

8 Books for Anyone Curious About Meditation
We asked experts — mindfulness teachers, spiritual leaders, and scientists — for their favorite beginner-friendly titles.
By Hope Reese
April 22, 2023
Distractions are everywhere. We’re so often summoned by smartphone notifications, emails and other obligations that sitting still can seem like a fantasy. But research shows that meditating regularly, for even a few minutes a day, can reduce anxiety and help us recognize and interrupt negative thought patterns.
If you’re interested in learning to meditate, you might look for a book. But, with so many options, it’s easy to reach for titles that aren’t meant for beginners, said Sara Lazar, director of the Lazar Lab for Meditation Research at Massachusetts General Hospital. And that is how people “tend to get into trouble,” she said.
So we asked half a dozen meditation experts — teachers, spiritual leaders and scientists — about their favorite beginner-friendly books. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list, but these titles might help you cultivate a practice.
1. “Mindfulness in Plain English” by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana
This straightforward and accessible guide, written by the Sri Lankan Buddhist monk playfully nicknamed Bhante G, is a favorite among meditation teachers and scientists alike. Written in 1994, the book presents a clear picture of mindfulness and meditation and provides insights on how to begin a practice.
Dr. Jud Brewer, the director of research and innovation at Brown University’s Mindfulness Center, turned to it repeatedly when he was starting to meditate, and he frequently recommends it to beginners, he said. Another plus: “Mindfulness in Plain English” is available as a free PDF online, making it even more accessible.
2. “Real Happiness: A 28-Day Program to Realize the Power of Meditation” by Sharon Salzberg
Ms. Salzberg, a co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Mass., has been instrumental in popularizing mindfulness in the United States. (She also provided recommendations for this list.) “Real Happiness,” her 2009 title, has been popular for years, in large part because it’s full of real-world examples that help illustrate the principles behind mindfulness.
“Salzberg’s teaching style and communication style are very sensible, very thoughtful,” said Dr. Lazar.
3. “Mindfulness for Beginners: Reclaiming the Present Moment and Your Life” by Jon Kabat-Zinn
Several experts recommended works by Dr. Kabat-Zinn, a professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School who developed mindfulness-based stress reduction. In “Mindfulness for Beginners,” Dr. Kabat-Zinn urges readers to challenge what he calls their “currentefault setting,” the automatic thoughts and reactions that govern our actions.
- “The Miracle of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation” by Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Thien Buddhist monk, activist and teacher and the author of more than 100 books. “The Miracle of Mindfulness,” published in 1975, was written to offer advice to those suffering as a result of the Vietnam War.
Ms. Salzberg recalled reading it early in her meditation years. “Here was somebody actually expressing the beauty and the magic of living with more awareness and more clarity,” she said. “I never really heard it talked about in those terms.”
5. “Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain and Body” by Daniel Goleman and Richard Davidson
This 2017 title was written by Daniel Goleman, a psychologist and science journalist, and Richard Davidson, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and founder of the Center for Healthy Minds. While it does not necessarily offer direct instruction, it’s a great way to learn all of the health benefits that a regular practice offers, said Maya Shankar, a cognitive scientist and host of the podcast “A Slight Change of Plans.”
This book is also useful for “dispelling some common myths” about the science behind meditation, Dr. Shankar said.
- “How to Meditate: A Practical Guide to Making Friends With Your Mind” by Pema Chodron
Pema Chodron began studying Tibetan Buddhism in her mid-thirties and became a novice Buddhist nun in 1974. Ms. Salzberg recommended Pema Chodron’s 1996 book “When Things Fall Apart,” which she said “destigmatizes states like anger, fear, sadness, and describes how to use meditation to work with them.” But “How to Meditate” sets beginners up with mindfulness basics without overlooking the obstacles that may emerge during the process.
- “10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works — a True Story” by Dan Harris
While not a how-to-meditate title, this 2014 memoir speaks directly to skeptics. Mr. Harris’s “aha” moment happened after he had an on-air panic attack on “Good Morning America.” He re-evaluated his life and turned to meditation.
Mr. Harris “tells a very relatable story” of a high-achieving person working toward self-awareness, said Mr. Davidson, one of the authors of “Altered Traits.” It’s an accessible read for anyone beginning their meditation path, he said.
- “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice” by Shunryu Suzuki
Shunryu Suzuki, often called Suzuki Roshi, was a Zen Buddhist monk who helped popularize Zen in the United States. This book explains the basics — such as posture and breathing — of zazen meditation, practiced in Zen Buddhism, but it should not be considered a step-by-step tutorial. Instead, this short classic, published in 1970, is packed with insightful thoughts about the philosophy behind Zen, making an argument that keeping an open mind is critical, Ms. Salzberg said.

Description: "The Road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, and I must follow, if I can, pursuing it with eager feet, until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say." - J.R.R. Tolkien A near distant memory now, two decades gone, another year passed since Morrowind's first release in the hazy days of May 2002. For twenty-one years we've been playing Morrowind, immersing ourselves in a world first strange and alien, now familiar and welcome, a second home where adventure beckons. For twenty-one years we've been modding Morrowind, building for ourselves a world renewed, with fresh vistas, new perils, and lands to discover, making this extraordinary game ever larger and more beautiful.
After twenty-one years of Morrowind, we've scaled every mountain, explored every dungeon, gone on every expedition, and completed every quest. But even so, there's always something new to discover, something new to build, for the modding community has never ceased, building new worlds to expand our horizons, crafting new adventures to discover, and enhancing the very way we see and experience the game. Over a thousand new mods are released for Morrowind each year, and far from slowing down, the modding community for Morrowind has only grown over time!
So today, in order to celebrate the 21st Anniversary of this truly remarkable and one-of-a-kind game that we all know and love, we're once again hosting a May Modathon Month, the 9th Annual Modding Competition for the community, which has become the largest annual modding competition in the entire TES modding scene! Throughout the entire month of May, participating modders on the
Nexus and
Morrowind Modding Hall who submit Morrowind mods could get a chance to win indie or AAA games each week. Likewise, all participating mods will be entered to win one of the Masteries, by becoming the most popular mod in a particular category!
Not only that, but all winners will get trailers, special showcases, and numerous video features on
Morrowind Modding Showcases. And the winners of the category Masteries will naturally get featured in our Mod of the Month series, celebrating the best mods released for Morrowind each month. Not only that, but this year we're once again handing out achievements, little badges that you can unlock and plug into your mod download pages!
Last year's 2022 Modathon was by far and away one of the biggest modding competitions held for an Elder Scrolls game, with nearly 300 new mods submitted by roughly 100 individual modders, and with your help, we can make this year an even bigger success! The best games never die, so let's make Morrowind better than ever before with tons of new mods!
Achievements: Once again this year, we're including
achievements that you can earn and unlock by releasing mods! These are little badges that you can plug into your mod download pages, and we have over 70 achievements that you can unlock! Release a quest mod? Achievement Unlocked! Get over 100 downloads? Achievement Unlocked! See the full list of achievements down below. Some of these achievements are rare or unique, others are common, and still more are hidden and can only be unlocked by accident or chance. Try and collect as many as you can and become a Modding Master of Madness!

Challenges: Returning this year are optional,
theme-based modding challenges that will be running throughout this month's competition, with new achievements to unlock and new prizes to win! I must emphasize that these are
OPTIONAL challenges, the Morrowind May Modathon has always been and will continue to be a free-for-all modding competition where all are welcome, regardless of themes, but if you'd like to unlock some additional cheevos and get a chance to win some additional prizes, you can try your hand at making a mod to fit one of the weekly themed challenges below.
- Week 1: May 1st-8th, Make a mod that fits the theme of "Underwater & Sanctuary" (Use the header image here to participate)
- Week 2: May 9th-15th, Make a mod that fits the theme of "Solitude & Wilderness" (Use the header image here to participate)
- Week 3: May 16th-22nd, Make a mod that fits the theme of "Serendipity & Adventure" (Use the header image here to participate)
- Week 4: May 23rd-June 2nd, Make a mod that fits the theme of "Occult & Noir" (Use the header image here to participate)
Can you make a mod to match each theme? Each of these challenges are deliberately designed to be fairly broad and open to interpretation, potentially fitting any of a wide variety of mods, allowing you to let your creativity go wild!
Participation and How it Works: You can participate by leaving a short note in the mod description page of your mod at
Morrowind Nexus or
Morrowind Modding Hall that includes "Part of the May Modathon Month" somewhere near the top of the description or use the "Modathon 2023" tag to mark your mod as a competition entry.
Every week, at least five different modders will be selected at random to win a single AAA or Indie game, and the way this works is that we'll compose a list of all participating mods released that week, plug them into a random number generator, and the first five results we get back will be the winners for that week.
If you win in one of these weekly drawings, I'll send you a message on the Nexus or Discord notifying you that you've won and providing a list of games you can choose from as your prize. We have over 500 games to give away, so hopefully you'll find something you want on there!
Once again this year, for the grand prize winners, we're letting the people decide! The mods with the most endorsements (or reviews, in the case of mods uploaded to Morrowind Modding Hall) in each category (Gameplay, Immersion, Dungeons, Quests, Landscapes/Landmasses, Player Homes, Graphics and Audio, Towns and Cities, Items, etc....) by June 30th will be declared the masters of those categories, and win additional prizes as a result, including achievements and 2-3 game prizes for each grand winner in each category!
We'll be going by whichever categories you upload your mods on the Nexus to, and obviously, some categories (like Weapons and Armor) will be counted under broader categories like "Items". If you have any questions regarding how this will all work, exactly, feel free to post them below!
In total, there's 11 categories with Masteries (and other categories of mods will be included under one of the existing categories, if you're posting a mod to Miscellaneous for example, we'll include it under the category that makes sense, depending on the mod, or you can include what category you want it to be included under in the mod description):
- Companions/Creatures/NPCs
- Dungeons
- Gameplay Mods/Bug Fixes/Patches/UI (Depends on UI mod, some may be categorized as Graphics)
- Graphics Mods/Animations/Audio/Shaders
- Immersion Mods
- Items/Weapons/ArmoBooks/Etc...
- Landscapes/Landmasses
- Modder's Resources/Utilities
- Player Homes
- Quests/Guilds&Factions
- Towns and Cities
Rules: Overall this competition and giveaway is pretty easy to understand, and there aren't a whole lot of rules involved, but there are a few things we should clear up just in case.
First, all types of mods are perfectly acceptable. From texture replacers to gameplay tweaks to content mods like house mods, quest mods, or dungeon mods. All of those are fine and will be accepted for the competition! The only kind of mod that will NOT be accepted is cheat mods, i.e. placing a barrel full of loot in the middle of Seyda Neen or placing a Daedric longsword in the Census and Excise Office. Cheat mods like that will not be considered for the competition.
Also, we accept both tes3mp and OpenMW mods, as well as MWSE Lua mods! Regardless of which platform your mod is designed to work with, all will be accepted!
Second, all submitted mods must be, at least for the most part, safe for work. Questionable content is acceptable so long as it isn't the entire mod, remember we have to showcase these and we can't showcase adult-themed mods on the channel!
Also, it should be pointed out that for larger mod projects, you can submit a demo or playable beta of your mod as part of the competition and it'll be perfectly acceptable. I do need to stress that it must absolutely be playable though. Any mod that crashes to desktop upon loading the game will not be considered.
In addition, we ask that all participating modders please only release a
maximum of 5 mods per day, there were some issues in past years with mods immediately getting buried, and we want everyone to have a chance to have their mods get seen! Also, we won't be counting very quick CS edit mods as counting towards achievements, in order to encourage less spam.
Remember, this only applies to mods released in May, so let's all get to modding and make this the big 21st Anniversary that Morrowind truly deserves!
If you don't know how to mod, check out our
Let's Mod Morrowind series for a visual guide to modding - including interiors, basic scripting, and quest design.

2023.04.09 00:16 throwaway20230409 Performance anxiety?
Hi!
I came here as a last attempt for help. I feel so lost and I don’t know what to do.
TLDR: I’m (18M) currently in a half yearish long relationship with my first girlfriend. I really love her and I enjoy spending time with her more and more. But when it comes to sex I get anxious and can’t get up. Is something wrong with me?
So in October of 2022 I met a girl I was crushing on in my gym. I’ve been looking at her for a long time but was afraid to go up to her and start a conversation. Turns out she felt the same way but was afraid to make the first move too. So she got one of her friends to try work in with me during one gym sesh. The guy seemed really chill and I quickly made a new friend.
The guy (let’s call him David) introduced me to my crush (let’s call him Sara) during another gym sesh. We small talked a bit and then started going in to more personal stuff too. Eventually the topic of weed came up and they asked me if I smoked. I said yeah and they invited me to smoke with them sometime. I said yes and the later that day all three of us went over to David’s crib, smoked, chilled out and talked about stuff.
I started to notice sings Sara was giving me but wasn’t so sure about myself to do anything. Then we started going to the gym together with Sara and David. Then we started going together with only Sara. And then we started to walk home together after gym with Sara. This is where I started to really get to know her because we always sat down in a park to talk about stuff every time we walked home.
Then in November of 2022 I invited my new friends to celebrate my birthday. A total of 4 of us were there: David, Sara, me and another mutual friend of ours. Later on my birthday David and the other guy went out to smoke and I stayed in the room with Sara. And then out first kiss happened.
In December of 2022 I spent most of my days together with Sara. I was really unconfident in myself and didn’t make moves for a long time. But eventually I mustered up all my strength and tried making out with her. It was going great until the point where I couldn’t get my dick hard. I didn’t really understand why. I mean every time we cuddled I got hard just from out bodies touching. I felt so shameful about this and every time we tried to have sex I got really anxious about it and then I couldn’t get hard.
One day towards the middle of December we had sex for the first time. It was my first ever time. It didn’t last long but I felt really good and relieved that there’s no problem with me all I had to do is just not work myself up over it. So this was my first turning point. After this day we started having sex regularly. I loved it, and it was a new thing for me. But then winter break came to an end I had to go back to school, got burnt out and depressed after like a week and I was back to not being able to get hard and getting anxious over it.
There were some times when I got horny and we could have sex but not most of the time. And this is the state I’m still in. Sometimes I get horny and we have a great sesh, but most of the time I’m just stressing about it and I’m not able to get hard or I just lose me erection very quickly.
This is such a horrible feeling I can’t even describe it. I feel like I’m less than others, I feel like there’s a defect in me, I feel ashamed because the way I can’t stand up to Sara’s sexual needs most of the times. I can’t even count how many times I ended up staring at the ceiling, naked, feeling defeated.
Recently I tried to make a change for real. I started waking up earlier to jump the rope, take a cold shower and drink some tea in the morning. I started being more social, open minded and talkative. I started to smile more and mess around with my friends more. I started to read mangas instead of binging videos. I started to journal, to meditate. And I felt fucking great. We had a lot of great sex in this period.
But then I started to not really care about all my new habbits and sank down into the same hole I was trying to get myself out of. I started smoking regularly again even though I was so happy I stopped.
I don’t know what to do. I feel like I’m destroying our realtionship because I can’t satisfy her sexual needs and then I beat myself up about it and become more anxious. Please help me.

2023.04.04 15:26 Boneguy1998 Astral Projection
Since the squatch experience and continued to meditate I began to Astral project for a couple years. Through that time I came across a few evil entities in which I felt their power level and scared me. One particular time I went further from my body I ever did. I remember coming across this one big bad that wanted my soul. It actually chased me back to my physical body and I barely got back in my body, it was closer than I wanted.
Separate Account
While not astrally projecting, my mind's eye was awakened at first to an energy that was close to me in the spirit realm. It was a a process. It eventually woke up my full consciousness in the spirit realm. The energy was a soft light. I started to focus on it, I slowly gained information. I got the impression it was tired, then old, confused, then it recently I mean within hours passed over aka someone died, then it was female, until I became aware of the identity of the person who was a very dear friend of the family named Sarah. She asked me where to go. I really did not know then I told her to go ti the light. I saw her enter the light and it was over. The next morning I went down the hill to my dad's gas station and walked in. Soon after my dad said I have something to tell you, Sara died last night. I was right. I should have told him she visited me but I thought he wouldn't believe me. I should have told him she died.

2023.04.02 16:41 attheark Double-barrel first names [Scotland, 2022]

FUN FACTS/OBSERVATIONS
- There are far fewer babies this year. When I did the 2021 names, it took me some serious work over several days to go through them all, and I did this in a few hours. Clearly the 2020 lockdown contributed to the name nerd cause.
- Once again, the most popular second part of a double-barrelled name for girls was Rose, showing up 137 times. Also popular, though not nearly as much so, are May/Mae, Grace, and Leigh.
- For boys, the most popular second part was James. Also popular are John and Lee.
- The most popular first names to be spiced up with a second part are Ava, Amelia, Ella, Isla, Lilly/Lily, Sophia/Sofia, and WinteWynter for girls. For boys, Jackson/Jaxon seems to be the only major stand-out.
- Once again, double-barrelling is much more common for girls. The most girls to be given the same double-barrel name (Lily-Rose) was 13, whereas the most popular double-barrelled name for boys (a tie with Alexander-James and Jaxon-James), had only 4 boys each.
- Double-barrelling names for boys seems to be marginally more popular among other cultures, with the amount of double-barrelled Muslim names representing a slightly higher ratio compared to English or Scottish names. Other cultures that are largely represented (such as Yoruba) tend to also prefer single names. (In fact, there are no double-barrelled Yoruba names in this list, which is a shame, as they have some of the most interesting names: Oluwademiladeogo (m) and Oluwafirekunmi (f) for example.)

2023.04.01 05:24 Merle8888 A last minute bingo post! This year I tried, with moderate success, to only include books I liked on the card. Also with commentary on the squares
Hello
fantasy,
I debated whether it was worth posting my card this year, especially since I didn’t do any cool theme like some of you! My challenge was to try to find books I actually liked, and I’m a tough customer, so ideally nothing below 3 stars, and only books I didn't mind boosting.
I only mostly made it, and there are a few books on here I’d have liked to replace, but toward the end the replacement books were getting lower ratings than the originals, until I accepted it was time to take a break. Nevertheless, it’s always fun to do bingo and I did get some great books on the card. I read 10 eligible books this year that did not make it onto the card (not counting sequels of books that are included, as I continued 2 series), and all of the books left off earned 3 stars or fewer, mostly fewer. So my favorites of the year are all represented.
Sadly I can’t seem to get the enlarged cover images to make a visual card and I am tired, so no pretty image to share, just reviews!
The Fabulous (4.5 stars)
How to Be Eaten by Maria Adelmann: Five fairy tale survivors come together in a dodgy support group in modern New York. This novel is weird and different, and very funny, with pitch-perfect dialogue and vibrant, memorable characters. It also does a great job of exploring feminism, trauma and economic inequality, and the ways all three of these are inextricably linked.
The Square:
Mental Health (HM): I liked this square a lot, and while several of this year’s books fit, the one with the frame story about a trauma support group seemed particularly apropos!
---
Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky: Fantasy from one perspective, science fiction from another, privileging neither; worldviews are durable and neither is really more true than the other. This is a fabulously inventive and plain cool novella, with strong writing and enough depth to be memorable. The chapter with side-by-side columns featuring the two protagonists’ very different interpretations of an origin myth is an especially nice touch.
The Square:
Book Club (HM): Self-explanatory. This one was especially popular in the Hugo readalong and generated some great discussion.
---
The Drowning Girl by Caitlin Kiernan: Maybe fantasy, maybe not: a woman with schizophrenia writes about some weird and troubling experiences in an attempt to parse what’s really happened to her. A weird, wonderfully-written novel with a completely believable voice, and a deep sympathy for its protagonist’s mental illness; this one never feels exploitative or shallow. Particularly impressive is the chapter written when the character is off her meds. I liked the two embedded short stories, purportedly written by the lead, a bit less, but they certainly show the author’s range.
The Square:
LGBTQ List (HM): I lucked out with this one, not having realized it was on the list until after reading it with a book club. I would have preferred an own voices aspect to the prompt, and this book meets that requirement as author is trans. As far as LGBT elements in the book, the protagonist is a lesbian and her girlfriend is a trans woman.
---
Murderbot by Martha Wells: I read all six of these books this year and love the series even more as a whole, which is rare for me. Murderbot is a fabulous lead, with a strong voice, extremely relatable (it judges everyone for being incompetent, and just wants to chill and watch media), and a great arc (learning to trust and care about people, despite being socially incompetent). The plots are a lot of fun, although more mystery/thriller than I usually care for, and feel well thought-through, and I appreciate the critique of corporatocracy running throughout. Wells’s ability to create great secondary characters just by showing us what they say and do, without any emotional intelligence on her narrator’s part, is something other authors should study. I’m here for as many books in this series as she wants to write and am very glad I gave her another chance after a bad experience with one of her fantasies—and I don’t even
like sci-fi!
The Square:
Set in Space (HM): The first book is set on a planet, albeit an uninhabited one. But most of the rest of the series is set on ships and space stations.
The Very Good (4 stars)
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke: Lovely, atmospheric and propulsive—I had a lot of fun figuring out what was happening here. Piranesi has a strong individual voice and I love his genuine kindness and compassion. This isn’t the perspective you would expect this story to be told from and it’s better for it. Clarke is also just an excellent writer, a strong prose stylist and a confident storyteller willing to leave some questions unanswered.
The Square:
Standalone (HM): A bit of a cheat on the hard mode since I’m confident it’s only not on the list because it wasn’t published yet!
---
The Bone Orchard by Sara Mueller: A dark, political standalone fantasy in a quasi-Victorian setting, featuring a woman who has suffered so much trauma that she deals with it by offloading portions of her personality and memories into other bodies. This one is well-written and different, set in an interesting world where psychic powers come with terrible costs. The beginning takes some attention to piece together what’s going on and I might have liked a little more from the end, but overall a worthwhile read.
The Square:
Published in 2022 (HM): An impressive debut and I definitely want to see where this author’s imagination goes next.
---
The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik: I’m a huge fan of this series: the first book got a very rare 5 stars from me, the second 4.5; this one is a little lower but I still love the trilogy as a whole. I wish this had been a little less frantically plot-driven and allowed the characters a little more room to breathe, but it’s a fabulous plot with some incredible twists and reveals, a lot of current relevance, and as always, a great protagonist in the snarky but heroic El.
The Square:
Urban Fantasy (HM): Not your typical urban fantasy but I think this one definitely qualifies, as it’s set in the real world and in fact mostly in cities!
---
The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin: Le Guin is a fabulous writer, and this book develops quite a deep story in a short page count, of a girl raised to be a powerful priestess who comes to question the order of things. I love the anthropological knowledge that forms the basis of her worldbuilding, and her writing is vivid and the characters feel real. Le Guin has also written about her struggles writing women as heroes, and I definitely see that in the end, where the character ending she meant as triumphant came across to me as disappointing.
I wanted Tenar to take hold of her newfound authority with both hands and make the priestly compound, and perhaps her country, a better place. Instead she ends the book as a teenage refugee dependent on Ged, finding freedom only by giving up her power. The Square:
Cool Weapon: I didn’t vibe with this square so hoped something would turn up, and as Ged has a magical staff that he can also fight with, I think this technically qualifies. Sometimes technically correct is the best kind of correct.
---
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones: Delightfully whimsical, sweet, and fun, this is a fairy-tale-esque story of a girl cursed into the form of an old woman, and the motley crew she falls in with, all of them living in a decidedly strange castle. I think this is really more an all-ages book than a middle-grade one; Jones’s philosophy was that kids were better at complicated plots than adults are, and that’s borne out here. I could have done without the sudden romance turn at the end.
The Square:
Name in the Title: Self-explanatory.
---
Daughter of Mystery by Heather Rose Jones: A lighthearted, fun book, this is a quasi-period novel set in an invented European country, featuring a romance between a young woman of the gentry who comes into money and uses it to study magic at university, and the guardswoman/duelist she inherits from her godfather. Both leads are sympathetic, the plot enjoyable, and the magic based on prayers to saints is fun. Not especially memorable but I think I’ll read the sequel (featuring a new couple) for next year’s bingo.
The Square:
Small Press or Self-Published: This one is small press rather than self-published; Bella Books focuses on publishing lesbian lit.
The Good (3.5 stars)
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey: A delicious psychological thriller, in which the biggest source of tension is the question of just how far our morally compromised protagonist will go. Strong writing, an unreliable narrator, and a weird cloning scenario set this one up as an intense read. Some character decisions seem a bit unlikely, but overall this one was definitely worthwhile.
The Square:
Anti-Hero: I don’t love the way women labeled anti-heroes are so often just traumatized people being human, but Evelyn is pretty far gone. One might reasonably question whether there’s any “hero” in her at all, but she’s a compelling lead.
---
The Keeper’s Six by Kate Elliott: A fun portal fantasy featuring a badass older woman and her posse setting out to rescue her adult son, who was kidnapped by a dragon. I really enjoy and respect Elliott’s work—she thinks through her worlds and characters deeply, and her progressivism is genuine, longstanding and interacts intelligently with her very well-developed worlds. These days I’m not that into quests and adventure plots, which is likely why I didn’t enjoy this one more.
The Square:
Revolutions and Rebellions: In line with the progressive ethos, Esther works to oppose slavery and help workers claim their rights everywhere she goes—there’s definitely some rebelling against the status quo going on here.
---
The Just City by Jo Walton: This one is hard to encapsulate in a mini-review. Time-traveling Greek gods Athena and Apollo bring together philosophers from throughout the ages to found Plato’s Republic in the Bronze Age, as an experiment. The book is a fun way to learn about Plato's Republic, and the characters’ philosophical discussions and sincere pursuit of excellence are great fun. I think Walton is better at writing about positive experiences than negative ones—her portrayals of grief and trauma have always fallen flat for me and do so again here, and some of her character voices are stronger than others, while the climactic debate seemed amateur. But despite the criticism, this one left me with a lot to think about, and I went on to finish the trilogy—the second is a slight step down but worth reading if you liked the first (unfortunately it’s hard to stop as they all end on cliffhangers), but the third is just a nosedive, WTF did she think
that absurd plotline belonged in
this trilogy when there were so many meatier things to explore? The trilogy as a whole I wouldn’t rate above 3 stars, but the first book gets 3.5. Somehow I never love Walton's books, but they're all so unique I keep coming back anyway.
The Square:
Award Nominee (HM): Self-explanatory.

Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde: Urban fantasy or perhaps magical realism, set in Lagos and exploring issues in contemporary Nigerian society. This one is vibrant, distinctive and messy, making no apologies for its Nigerian English and not catering to the foreign reader. It’s more short story collection than novel, and I found the first half intense and heavy but very well-written, as it explores themes of life, death, and finding meaning. The second half seems more focused on telling stories of queer Nigerians for queer Nigerians who haven’t seen much of themselves in fiction, but may do less for the reader for whom it’s not personal.
The Square:
Set in Africa (HM): One of only a couple squares my natural reading didn’t fill. I checked out 5 interesting-sounding books from the library, previewed them all, and this was the winner, which I was glad of because I wanted to read an African author and not just someone of African descent. The runner-up, Redemption in Indigo, seemed strong enough that I might read it for a future bingo.
---
Kalpa Imperial by Angelica Gorodischer: A thoughtful, literary collection of short stories set at various points in the history of an imagined empire; it reminds me a bit of Chinese history in its cyclical rising and falling. It’s no wonder Le Guin was a fan, as this is a thematically rich work, dealing with big ideas about history and power and the individual’s role in all this. Plot and character are not the focus, and I expected the stories to tie together more than they do, but they leave the reader something to think about as Gorodischer does not spell things out.
The Square:
No Ifs Ands or Buts: This year’s easiest square, and I gave up hard mode, but I wanted to fit this book on my card somehow, okay?
The Okay (3 stars)
Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel: Enjoyable but not particularly memorable, this is a retelling of the Ramayana from the perspective of Rama’s antagonistic stepmother. It takes the well-worn route of making her near-perfect and Rama in the wrong, which has generated some interesting discussions about its portrayal of Hinduism. Unfortunately, it’s told in a generic first-person voice that makes Kaikeyi herself into a generic idealized protagonist. Despite that, I really enjoyed its focus on her relationships with family and friends, particularly the other women in her life, and the flow of the book appealed to me, with our lead mostly finding success and happiness in life. If you enjoyed Circe, but want to see better feminism and could do without the sex and romance, you should definitely try this.
The Square:
Family Matters (HM): I love this book for this square because the book is primarily about family relationships of various sorts. And its three-generational cast places our heroine in the middle generation rather than the youngest one, which is nice.
---
In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire: The only novella in this series that I’ve read, and I loved it right up until the end. Our heroine has to choose between a portal world and our world, and passes back and forth repeatedly as she grows up and her decision gets harder and harder. I loved the deep but understated emotion, the relationships between the heroine and her families both biological and found, the fact that both her mentor and her best friend are also women/girls and these relationships have a lot of depth and emotion to them, and the sheer reasonableness of this initially bizarre world and its rules. The tragic ending basically destroys all that though, as to make it happen a major character acts against common sense, her own established wishes and motivations,
and the rules of the world, all in one ridiculously contrived swoop. It seems like the author knew what ending she had to come to based on this protagonist's appearance in an already-published book, and so had to force a story that had grown in a different direction into that mold. This is the second McGuire book I’ve read, and likely the last, as my enjoyment of both books was severely impaired by elements that seemed really poorly thought-through.
The Square:
Shapeshifters (HM): A cool feature of the world is that takers slowly begin to grow feathers, and ultimately turn into birds if they don’t change their ways (it’s okay though, they can become human again by giving back to the community).
---
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri: This was pretty mid for me, despite elements I like in theory: the South Asian inspired world, the three major women characters who play important roles in each other’s stories. I don’t really do epic fantasy anymore (what you don’t see on this card are all the others that I DNF’d early), but my enjoyment was probably also held back by having previously read Suri’s Books of Ambha, which I enjoyed much more. I’m starting to feel as if she creates all of her major women characters by starting with the same “strong woman” template and changing up the particular life experiences—also, you really have to emotionally connect to get much out of Suri's books and I wasn’t quite there with this one.
The Square:
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey (HM): There’s a forest where time passes at a different rate. Not a huge element but it is there!
---
At the Mouth of the River of Bees by Kij Johnson: Quite a varied short story collection, from fantasy to science fiction to magic realism. There were stories in here that I
loved—particularly the first, “26 Monkeys, Also the Abyss,” about troubled people finding their way back into the world through a circus act. There were stories I
hated, like “Dia Chjerman’s Tale,” an incredibly dark and upsetting tale of the brutal destruction of a planet. So it’s hard to recommend as a collection, though I absolutely recommend all of Johnson’s novels, particularly The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe, closely followed by Fudoki. Oddly enough, the story that grew into Fudoki is here and I liked it less as a short story; the collection also includes the story that grew into my least favorite of her novels, The Fox Woman—and I liked that one much more.
The Square:
Five Short Stories (HM): Self-explanatory.
---
Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher: Cute but forgettable to me. A princess-turned-nun gathers a motley band to go on a quest to rescue her sister from an abusive husband who is also a king. I wanted a little more from both the world and the characters—Marra is nominally 30 but has a pretty standard coming-of-age story, which seems like a waste of an adult heroine, and the supporting cast is in theory cool but didn’t do much for me. Someone likened them to Pratchett characters and I think there’s some truth to that, so if you get more emotionally invested in his characters than I do (read: at all) you might also like this more.
The Square:
Author Uses Initials (HM): Self-explanatory.
---
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin: A very well-written novel; that opening is breathtaking in its sheer confidence and power. And there’s some definite character depth here. I can see why this is popular and award-winning. But I never connected with the characters, and it proved too dark a book for me to enjoy—expect horrific violence against children. Also, those themes? Yeah, I’m tired of fantasy novels that like to pretend power is irrelevant to human power relations. This setup—mages with horrifically dangerous and violent powers are hated and feared by the populace because of those powers, and use the fact that people "wrongly" hate and fear them to justify ever more violence against average citizens who can never hope to match their power—this makes a great analogy for America’s police and how they see themselves. Unfortunately the book transparently intends it as an analogy for actual oppressed people, particularly African-Americans, where it works much less well.
The Square:
Weird Ecology (HM): A world geologically different from our own (though I think it may be intended as our world in the far future), where plants, animals and people have evolved to survive even decades of disaster-induced winter.
---
You Feel It Just Below the Ribs by Jeffrey Cranor and Janina Matthewson: Set in a dystopia, this purports to be the memoir of an influential psychiatrist, with footnotes by disapproving editors. The conceit is believably executed, and as a meditation on memory and history and complicity this works fairly well. It’s less successful with plot and character, and I didn’t believe in the dystopia (the world government has outlawed families? Really?). This is a tie-in novel to a podcast, Within the Wires, and while it’s sold as one you don’t need to listen to the podcast to understand, I think maybe you actually do.
The Square:
2+ Authors: This square actually got me on a multi-authored-work reading kick this year. Unfortunately, those books are ranking lower than average for me; you’ll see one more further down and there were another two ranked too low to make it onto the card (including one that would have qualified for hard mode!).
---
Monstress Vol. 7: Devourer by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda: I enjoy this graphic novel series, a beautifully drawn epic fantasy in a female-dominated world. Warning that it’s dark, graphic and gory, though, and seems to be bogging down a bit in the middle volumes. Or maybe I just need to wait till it’s finished and read it all in one go rather than one book per year.
The Square:
Non-Human Protagonist: A bit of a cheat since Maika can pass, but she is Arcanic, meaning from a race of animal-people, not human. (She’s also sharing her body with a monster.) I later read an actual novel for this but I hated it so here we are.
The Not-So-Good (2.5 stars)
Sorcery & Cecelia by Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer: This is actually kind of fun, an epistolary novel featuring two spunky cousins encountering magic and romance in Regency England. The authors wrote the novel by writing each other letters in character as a game and without discussing the plot, which is a super fun origin story, but as a novel I don’t think it quite works—both leads have protagonist syndrome, they’re kind of the same person and their plots have all the same beats, including identical climaxes, which was awfully boring the second time around. Still, if you love Georgette Heyer and you love fantasy you might want to give this a try.
The Square:
Historical Fantasy: I love this as a square and wish I had something better for it—initially I used Daughter of Mystery but then moved that out late and had to scramble.
---
Pemmican Wars by Katharina Vermette: A short graphic novel featuring a Metis teenager who is struggling in foster care and meanwhile is transported back to (or perhaps just dreams of?) scenes from Canada’s past. The present-day thread is intriguingly told, almost all pictures with very few words, and brings home the protagonist’s isolation while letting readers come up with their own interpretation of what’s happening. The past segments feel really juvenile though, much younger than the YA it’s sold as, and still don’t do much to clarify the history.
The Square:
BIPOC Author (HM): The square I struggled with most this year, because I really wanted to do hard mode, but had a
lot of trouble finding a fantasy by an indigenous author that I wanted to read. I read a lot of lists and reviews, previewed at least 7 books, and read 3 of them. The first, while perfectly decent, was straight literary fiction and I could not make an argument that it was speculative, despite its being sold that way. The third was definitely fantasy but I thought it was pretty bad. So I wound up with this one, which is only arguably fantasy, very short, and which I didn’t think was all that great—definitely a non-ideal choice! But bingo is up and I don’t mind boosting this for those who might in fact enjoy it.
Thanks for reading!
