2023.06.02 02:16 Boelthor "Even the greatest justice must start from somewhere small." (Penance Guide)

Penance is a 6* DPS Defender, and on top of that she's the 6* equivalent of one of my longtime favorite operators so I'm contractually obligated to write a guide for her. And she's also an operator who demands that you use her in a certain way; while doing so isn't difficult it can trip you up if you aren't conscious of this, so a guide will hopefully make it easy to avoid those pitfalls.

Basic Information

Penance is a 6* Juggernaut Defender, but the operator she's most similar to is Estelle--both of them are self-sufficient operators that actively profit from having more enemies. In fact, Penance's signature Barrier mechanic provides so much self-sustain that she can often go through an entire stage without losing even a single HP. As for her offense, she's the first operator to make good general use of recoil damage, and her direct damage output is nothing to scoff at either.

Offensive Stats

Penance has high Attack, a 1.6 second attack interval, okay dps, and a standard 1x2 range. Most of Penance's offense comes from her talents and skills, but high Attack means her basic attacks don't have many problems with armor.

Defensive Stats

Penance has extremely high HP, high Defense, 10 Res, and 3 block. When she was released Penance had the highest base HP of any operator, and her overall bulk is among the highest in the game.

Cost and Trust

Penance costs a massive 36 DP, making her the most expensive operator in the game alongside Mudrock. Her trust bonus is more offensive compared to her predecessor, giving her 600 HP and 40 Attack.

Trait: Cannot be healed by allies

Penance cannot be directly healed by anyone except for herself. Regen-based healing still works.
Penance, unlike Mudrock, has no self-healing in her kit; if she loses HP she's only getting it back via regen or redeployment. Ideally her Barrier will prevent her from losing HP in the first place so this isn't much of a downside, and she has plenty of HP to spare, but it can occasionally causes problems.

First talent: Guardian of the Law

After deployment, immediately gains a Barrier equal to 50% Max HP; When defeating an enemy, gains a Barrier equal to 10% Max HP (Cannot exceed 300% Max HP)
Effectively, Barrier is bonus HP that does not count towards the normal maximum HP, is lost before "real" HP, and can only be restored by effects that explicitly grant Barrier. It's represented graphically as a lighter blue section on the HP bar, placed between the normal blue of current HP and the empty black of missing HP.
The key to Penance's survivability, Barrier scales off of her enormous max HP to turn her into a enormous HP sponge, capping out at 13,965 Barrier for 18,620 effective HP. Generating Barrier on kills has its pros and cons; on one hand cannon fodder will only improve her bulk, on the other hand she has to worry about kill-stealing and doesn't do as well if 1v1ing elites. That said, if there's so little cannon fodder in a lane you should probably be using a Musha or some other kind of duelist, so it doesn't interfere too much with Penance's intended usage. Kill-stealing also isn't a huge issue, as Penance is built to solo lanes anyway.

Second talent: Wreathed in Thorns

Each time this unit is attacked while under the effect of her own Barrier, deals 50% Attack as Arts damage to the attacker
Previous operators with recoil damage had various shortcomings that left it as a situational thing, be it low recoil damage (that if physical struggled with Defense due to low dph), no damage outside of recoil, or low uptime. Penance, however, has none of these problems: her recoil damage is strong (and as Arts won't care about Defense), her basic attacks still do appreciable damage (and she has her skills on top of them), and her recoil damage is almost always active (denoted by the conspicuous golen aura). Since recoil activates per enemy it's effectively AoE, making handling hordes of cannon fodder and accumulating Barrier that much easier, and letting Penance focus her own attacks on bigger threats. Another advantage is that recoil damage will apply to drones as well, giving Penance potential antiair capabilities. Plus recoil has no range limitation and bypasses Invisibility, making Penance a counter to a variety of annoying enemies.

First skill: Last Word

At m3{m0} Last Word has 0 initial SP, costs 3{4} SP, recovers SP over time, can be Charged, lasts for a single attack, and is automatically activated. It causes the affected attack to deal an additional hit of Arts damage equal to 200%{180%} of Penance's Attack. Charged: The affected attack deals 200%{180%} damage (only applies to the base physical damage) and Stuns the target for 5{3} seconds.
Charged: Can continue recovering SP after reaching the maximum. When SP reaches double the maximum, enter Charged state. Skills have additional effects when activated in Charged state (All SP is consumed whenever skill is activated)
UnCharged, s1 is a simple afk skill that doesn't have much use. The Charged version, on the other hand, is a top-tier crowd control skill--if you can get Penance to cast it. The catch is that due to being auto activation, as long as an eligible target is in range while Penance has filled her first SP bar but not her second she'll cast the much weaker unCharged version. Because of this, the Charged version is normally relegated to opening engagements. The real value of the skill is in its ability to combo with skills that inflict Sleep or Levitate, which render the target invalid and lets Penance Charge her s1 for a potential infinite cc lock. But there aren't many situations where this is both feasible and useful, so s1 is just a footnote to her kit.

Second skill: Stoic Atonement

At m3{m0} Stoic Atonement has 20{14} initial SP, costs 30{34} SP, recovers SP over time, lasts 20 seconds, and is manually activated. Penance stops attacking enemies, gains 60%{50%} Sanctuary, increases Barrier gain from talent 1 by 100%{80%}, and deals 140%{110%} Arts damage to all ground enemies within a 3x3 square centered on her every second (unaffected by ASPD).
Sanctuary: Reduce Physical and Arts damage taken by the stated percentage (Does not stack, strongest effect takes precedence).
The high Sanctuary s2 provides makes Penance ludicrously bulky, acting as a x2.5 multiplier to her effective HP, and helping preserve the extra Barrier she generates during this skill. To illustrate, every kill while this skill active is worth 2,328 eHP, and if she manages to cap her Barrier she'll have a staggering 46,550 eHP! On the offensive side, the effective attack interval reduction and true AoE give it good dps for a melee Arts skill, and her recoil damage is still in effect as well. The 50s rotation is good as well, though having only 40% uptime is mildly disappointing.

Third skill: Trial of Thorns

At m3{m0} Trial of Thorns has 0 initial SP, costs 20{24} SP, recovers SP by getting hit, lasts 30 seconds, and is manually activated. Upon casting the skill Penance instantly gains Barrier equal to 130%{100%} of her max HP (caps at 300% max HP), and for the duration of the skill she gains +400%{+320%} Attack, +0.9s attack interval (giving her a 2.5s interval), and increased Taunt.
The first thing that jumps out in s3's description is the gargantuan +400% Attack, taking a max level Penance to 4,580 Attack. Even with the increased attack interval to reign in her dps somewhat, she still hits like a cannonball, tearing through armor like it's soggy tissue paper and ending the lives of weaker enemies with a single blow. But remember, her recoil damage scales off of her Attack, so with s3 up enemies attacking her are in for 2,290 Arts damage--and thanks to the Taunt, enemies will be attacking her if they have the opportunity. Trash mobs will vaporize on contact with her, and even most elites and bosses aren't getting away unscathed. S3 also generates a hefty chunk of Barrier, 6,052 HP worth at max level, offering great survivability as well.
S3's rotation deserves special attention; while I'm aware that defensive recovery is often seen as a drawback compared to auto recovery, HG seems to share that view and balances accordingly. Defrec skills typically have low SP costs compared to their power, and Penance's s3 is no exception--20 SP cost for 30s duration is amazing for average skills, let alone one this strong. But I think defrec is often an advantage, at least for block 3 units like Penance; defrec charges per enemy, and can even charge >1 SP/sec if there are enough enemies. Furthermore, defrec ties into Penance's overall kit: cannon fodders' attacks barely scratch her high Defense while giving her SP, and when they kill themselves via her recoil damage she gains more Barrier than she lost in the first place, making them pure profit.

Penance, Mudrock, and the Missing 6*

How Penance compares to Mudrock is a common question, and while I don't plan to go into much depth on the topic, I will give some info. The biggest difference, imo, is that Mudrock is more defensive while Penance is more offensive. Mudrock's damage output is mostly propped up by her AoE and her bulk allowing her to stall many enemies indefinitely; if you ever have Mudrock 1v1ing a bulky enemy you'll be waiting a long time. Penance, on the other hand, can use s3 to demolish a single enemy, but her Barrier doesn't naturally regenerate like Mudrock's Shields, and she doesn't fare nearly as well against slow but hard hits. Mudrock being easier to use is a point that gets brought up, but imo most of that is simply the difference between Mudrock s2's autoactivation and Penance s2/s3's manual activation. You do have to pay more attention when positioning Penance so she gets enough fodder and doesn't have to worry about kill-stealing, but with a 36 DP cost she's typically not getting deployed until you've gotten a general idea of what lanes will have fodder, and in exchange for not being as much of a team player Penance has a higher ceiling on her solo performance. In conclusion, the answer is simply that they're different, and both are strong enough to be worthwhile. That said, I do think that comparing Penance to Mudrock just because they're both 6* Juggernauts is approaching Penance from the wrong angle.
Let's change the subject, and talk about Arts Protectors. The first Arts Protector, Dur-nar, released ~3.5 years ago at the time this guide was written, and to my great sorrow there's still no 6\ Arts Protector (only Sentinel Protectors have gone longer with no 6*). Penance may be a Juggernaut but both s2 and her recoil provide a substantial Arts damage output, while s3's sheer dph lets her tear through Defense similar to Arts. Thus, Penance is the closest thing there is to the long awaited 6* Arts Protector. Most melee units with substantial Arts damage either only block 1 (like Arts Guards) or are squishy (like Broca); apart from Arts Protectors and Penance the only units who don't compromise on at least one of those are Lappland, the upcoming Qiubai, Ling's s3 dragons, and if we count true damage s3 Mon3tr. Even among Arts Protectors, Dur-nar is held back by 4* stats, Asbestos is an attempted jack-of-all-trades who fails at almost all of them (especially damage output), Shalem is powerful but his s2's self-damage compromises his bulk, and Czerny is a weird recoil-centric unit who seems to have forgotten that most enemies who deal Arts damage also have high Res. There's simply very little competition for Penance's role, and what competitors she does have are either clearly inferior, not tanks even if they're not squishy, or cost multiple deploy slots (and have to deal with some drawbacks due to being summons). This gives Penance a lot of value simply because there are so few viable alternatives for her role, let alone good ones.
Now, how well this section ages will been seen if and when an actual 6* Arts Protector gets released; it's entirely likely that they'd have much more dps than Penance. That said, such an event is still 7+ months away even if said 6* Arts Protector would be announced tomorrow, so Penance still has plenty of time to enjoy her near monopoly. But even when that time comes, it'll only bring her one real competitor who probably won't have as much survivability as Penance. And on top of that, Penance is still one of the few operators fulfilling an even less populated role: melee Arts dps with self-sustain. Indra and Sideroca are the only other units to completely fit the bill, though if you're willing to bend and stretch the description you could also include s2 Utage (Arts is only via her on-deploy s2), Ling's s3 dragons (can't be healed but Ling can resummon them), s3 Mon3tr (true damage), X3 Specter2 (doll has good Arts dps provided Spec2 is dying enough), and s3 X3 Gladiia (s3 has good arts dps on light enemies). And don't forget, Penance is also the premier user of recoil damage, giving her another useful role where none of her few competitors even come close to her.
In short, while Penance is a Juggernaut and a solo laneholder, don't only look at her fromt hat perspective--think of her as an Arts dps as well.

Mastery Choices

Penance masteries are pretty simple, though m3, m6, and m9 are all valid.
S3 is the easy first pick; it's her primary skill and the reduced SP cost, +80% Attack, and extra Barrier are all important.
S1 is a simple choice to make: ignore it unless you have an interest in doing infinite cc locks with it, in which case m3 is mandatory.
S2 is where things are less clear-cut. While it does overlap with s3, the two skills have their own pros and cons, and s2's masteries are important if you plan on using it.
As for my personal opinion, I think s2 is worth mastering; while I'm a major advocate for defensive recovery, s2 can be a substantial improvement to Penance's versatility. And as mentioned above, Penance is filling a surprisingly unique role; it's hard to find a substitute for her s2 on other operators, so mastering it gives you options you otherwise wouldn't have. But there's no need to rush to decide, so take your time and see how much you like using her.

Usage

I've often seen Penance regarded as hard to use, but I do not believe this to be the case. Rather, what's going on is that Penance is an operator with very pronounced strengths and weaknesses, so if used properly she'll excel, but if you try to fit a square peg into a round hole then she'll faily miserably. Her actual role is very straightforward: she's a living roadblock, capable of locking down entire lanes.

Trash Flow

The key to using Penance is simply understanding where trash mobs are going; Penance will rarely be overwhelmed by sheer numbers, so you typically just place her at the best chokepoint available. If a lane doesn't have many or any trash mobs then you simply don't use Penance and take an operator focused more on 1v1 instead, or take advantage of one of the synergies listed later to circumvent her weaknesses. Thankfully it's easy to recognize where the cannon fodder will go, since they typically are the first things to start spawning in a map. Don't be afraid to delay Penance's placement until you're sure where you should put her, as there are many other reasons to do so: at 36 DP she costs a lot to begin with, s2 has high initial SP, s3 can't precharge anyway, and having higher aggro lets her activate her recoil damage more often and get more SP for s3.

Boss Killer?

One common misuse of Penance is using her to fight bosses; while she has impressive damage and bulk, s3's total damage isn't quite enough for her to reliably 1v1 bosses, bosses tend to burn Barrier quickly, and bosses usually have multiple phases to stall out s3's duration and attack slowly so s3 will recharge slowly. While there are some exceptions like phase 2 Patriot whose DoT aura continually procs Penance's recoil damage letting her melt him easily, bosses in general play to her weaknesses. Rather, Penance's forte is in using her fast rotations to deal with elites while letting her recoil clean up trash mobs, allowing your other units to focus their attention on other matters such as the boss.

Barrier Maintenance

Another important thing to learn is how to keep Penance's Barrier up, given how key it is to her kit. You should pick this up fairly quickly if you start using here, but here are some specific pointers:

SSS

SSS is a gamemode almost tailor-made for Penance, offering lots of trash mobs that typicially funnel into 1-2 chokepoints. And with her s3 already having such high dph she doesn't need to stack Attack just to overcome Defense, giving her a lot of freedom in which buffs you stack. For example, the classic Vanguard A lets her charge even during downtime, Defender A's +1 block lets her stack up even more mobs, and Guard B provides the overall highest dps increase. Or if you want to try something silly, a full Vanguard stack will let Penance always Charge her s1 for chain Stuns and a high damage too.

Synergies

While Penance would rather other operators stay in their own lanes for the most part she does still have some synergies, and most of them are strong ones at that. If you have any of the operators listed below it's well worth considering if there's some way for you to fit them into your team when using Penance (or vice-versa).

SP Batteries

Penance's s3 has a low SP cost and high power but defensive recovery can lead to difficulty charging it, making her a great candidate for use with SP batteries. While many SP batteries don't work well with her if at all, being defensive recovery does unlcok three great ones that auto recovery can't use, and there's another great one that has special synergy with her.

Blemishine

Blemishine's talent causes defrec skills to recover 1 SP when attacking; with Penance's 1.6s interval that's an average 0.625 SP/sec, charging s3 in 32s on its own. And that's not counting the base defensive recovery SP gain, which will charge s3 even faster in practice. This is especially useful for improving s3's performance against slow-attacking but hard-hitting elites, which normally give it trouble. The drawback is that this still requires that Penance have enemies to fight, so during breaks between waves Penance is still stuck at 0 SP/sec. Even so, Blemi has a transformative effect on Penance, and Penance may well be the operator who benefits most from Blemi. And given that Blemi's plenty good on her own merits, using her to charge Penance doesn't require much sacrifice.

Stainless

Stainless s3 provides deployable turrets that can be attacked, thereby triggering Blemishine's SP battery, ensuring that Penance s3 will always have a 32s cooldown at worst. Stainless can also directly act as an SP battery with s2, but in that capacity he's not as good as Penance's other options.

Ch'en1

Ch'en1 with her X2+ module causes offrec and defrec skills to recover 1 SP every 3 seconds, an average 0.33 SP/sec, charging s3 in 60s on its own. While Ch'en1's SP battery is only around half the strength of Blemi's, it has the advantage of working regardless of whether there are enemies available, letting Penance keep charging during breaks between waves. While this isn't quite as impactful as Blemi's it's still very noticeable, and if you wanted you could always use both, as Blemi also benefits from Ch'en1's SP battery. With X3 Ch'en1 is a much more capable operator than she once was, and Il Siracusano finally allows you to use her without having to kick Ch'en2 out of the squad.

Aak

Aak s3 attacks an operator 15 times for 500 physical damage, and if the target survives both they and Aak will be buffed. Penance's Defense means Aak only does 375 total damage, and all those attacks do count towards Defensive recovery, granting Penance 15 SP near instantly (Aak is not affected by Penance's recoil damage). The buff from s3 is +50% Attack and +50 ASPD; while the former is heavily diluted by Penance s3's +400% Attack, the latter is not and provides a good damage boost, though it only lasts for two-thirds of Penance s3's duration. Aak's rotation also lines up fairly well with Penance s3, at 55s--assuming you can get the 5 extra SP from something, Penance s3 will have a consistent 25s cooldown.

Saga

Due to her talent, Saga is incapable of landing the killing blow on an enemy (except via her s2), instead putting them into the Critically Wounded state where they'll die in a single hit, granting 2 SP to whoever finished them off. This is perfect for feeding Penance Barrier, plus Saga's s3 can fund Penance's DP cost and has range extension so Saga can hide behind Penance and continue providing assitance. Edit: Luo Xiaohei also Crtically Wounds enemies rather than killing them and provides 2 SP to whoever finishes them off like Saga; however, he doesn't generate DP, costs more DP, only attacks a single target during his s2 and does less damage to that target than Saga s3. While he's inferior overall, he does have a couple advantages: as a 4* he's potentially more accessible if you were around for his collab, and as a Lord he always has the range to attack enemies while hiding behind Penance instead of only doing so during skill uptime like Saga.

Regen

Regen is the only way to heal Penance so it gets a mention here, though more so as a warning. While it may seem like regen would be extremely helpful, the reality is if Penance is taking so much damage that she'd die without regen then she's spending a long time with no Barrier and her combat performance will suffer due to her second talent being inactive. Thus, regen is a lot less useful than you may think at first glance. It's not entirely useless as it might well be what she needs to wait out s3's cooldown for the renewed Barrier, but it's rarely worth going out of your way for.

Damage Mitigation

Rather, if you want to keep Penance alive focus on preventing/reducing damage she takes, which will let her Barrier last longer and thus indirectly buff her offense along with her defense.

Rosa

Rosa is one of many operators who are less likely to steal Penance's kills, but I decided to give her some special attention due to how well her mechanics work with Penance. As a Besieger she naturally prioritizes the heaviest enemy in range, which normally means she prioritizes the enemies that are a net Barrier loss over the ones that are a net Barrier profit. Furthermore, she ignores 60% of the Defense of weight 3+ enemies and her upcoming module will ~double her dps against them; this makes her very good at taking down those elites, but even when she runs out her dps against the trash mobs will be lackluster, giving Penance the chance to kill them herself.

Ebenholz

While I haven't tested this combo personally, much like Rosa Ebenholz is geared to fight elite enemies, and thus tends to leave mobs for Penance. The catch is that his "filter" is reliant on skill uptime, and when he does attack trash mobs he tends to ohko them, making him very map-reliant to pair with Penance.

Sleep/Levitate

As mentioned earlier, combining Penance with operators that inflict these status effects can result in an infinite cc lock on an enemy, but this generally requires 3+ operators total. The most notable combo is with Erato s1 and a source of SP such as Ptilopsis's talent, which will produce an afk cc lock. This is a very low investment combo as well: Erato only needs s1r7 which can be achieved at e1 1, and Ptilopsis's e1 talent is sufficient SP generation, so only Penance needs e2 and mastery.

Base Skills

At e0 Penance's base skill is Law and Order, a Office skill. Law and Order provides +50% HR contacting speed but increases morale consumed per hour by 0.5.
At e2 Penance gains a second base skill, Fellow Travelers, a Dorm skill. Fellow Travelers restores 0.15 morale per hour to all Operators in that Dorm, and an additional 0.05 morale per hour for every recruitment slot beyond the original two. (Only the strongest stacked effect of this type takes place)
Penance has strongest Office skill even from e0, but with the drawback that she can only work a single 12 hour shift. Her e2 skill is a standard morale recovery skill, but it's a freebie on an operator who'll be spending a lot of time in the Dorms anyway. As a reminder, you shouldn't upgrade the Office so this skill should only provide 0.15 morale/hour rather than 0.25.

Closing

This guide ended up being shorter than I expected, since at the end of the day using Penance isn't all that complex if you acknowledge her limitations. Even so, if you have any questions ask away as I may have left something out unintentionally. Next up I plan to do a guide for Reed2 sometime during her banner, and maybe a miniguide/PSA on post-module Rosa since she hasn't been getting nearly enough hype. As always, here's a link to the Operator Guide Repository maintained by u/LastChancellor, also available in the subreddit's sidebar.
In case you'd like to see Penance in action for yourself, here are some videos (possible spoilers ahead). These are generally showing her performance in extreme scenarios and at max level, but they should give you an idea of what her upper limit is like.

2023.06.01 03:34 harry-jg How to Pay Hulu Outside in USA

Can't access Hulu outside the United States? It's as if the universe has conspired against you, demanding you provide a US credit card and asking you to physically be in the country. This becomes particularly vexing when you're on a vacation in, say, Paris, and all you want is to binge-watch your favourite show while munching on a croissant. Turns out, renewing your subscription can be as complicated as explaining the plot of a time-travel movie to your grandmother.
So here's the trick: You need a VPN. Hulu, being the sly fox that it is, looks at your IP address to see if you're within the good ol' USA. But a VPN, with its digital cloak of invisibility, lets you masquerade as a Yank, regardless of your actual whereabouts. Meaning, you could be sipping sake in Tokyo or riding a camel in Egypt, but Hulu will think you're eating apple pie in the heartland.
Through diligent labour, my team and I scrutinized over 60 VPNs designed to finagle Hulu's geoblocks. And standing tall among the crowd, we have ExpressVPN. It's the Brad Pitt of VPNs, offering multiple US servers and lightning-fast speeds to let you access Hulu without as much as a hiccup. And just to sweeten the deal, you can take ExpressVPN for a spin without any risk, as it's protected by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If it doesn't tickle your fancy, getting your money back is as easy as pie.
Getting Cozy with Hulu Globally: A VPN's Role in Your Streaming Escapades
Ever tried to access Hulu outside the United States? It's like attempting to communicate with a mime—nearly impossible and often met with an unamused silence. Hulu, with its treasure trove of binge-worthy content, unfortunately, dons an armor of licensing restrictions that keep it securely tethered to the Land of the Free. Its digital gatekeepers, aptly called geoblocks, detect the non-US IP address and give you a digital cold shoulder. And if you thought that's the end of your woes, there's more! Setting up a new Hulu account would need a US credit card, a hurdle that's hard to leap.
In these dire times, one can count on the prowess of a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Picture a VPN as a savvy undercover agent, masterfully disguising your IP address as if you're lounging on a couch somewhere in New York, even when you're actually sunbathing in Barcelona. A VPN juggles your internet traffic, directing it through a server of your choice, thereby replacing your original IP address with a shiny new one from the chosen location. This high-tech sleight of hand can bamboozle streaming platforms into thinking you're within their allowed borders.
In layman's terms, pick a VPN server located in the US and voila! You get a US IP address. When Hulu gazes upon this borrowed IP, it believes you're a proud dweller of Uncle Sam's land, lifting the barriers. Suddenly, signing up, renewing subscriptions, and accessing your beloved Hulu shows become a cakewalk, no matter where on the globe you're perched.
ExpressVPN
Imagine you're trying to sprint a marathon on stilts - pretty inconvenient and unstable, right? Now swap those stilts with a pair of world-class running shoes, and suddenly you're Usain Bolt. That's precisely the upgrade ExpressVPN offers when you're trying to subscribe to Hulu or streaming in Ultra High Definition.
In a test of virtual athleticism, ExpressVPN's New York, Dallas, and Chicago servers gave a stunning performance. Clocking in at an average speed of 91 Mbps, they fell only a hair short of my prime 100 Mbps connection. It’s like running a race and placing a close second to a cheetah. Given that you need merely a humble 25 Mbps to stream in UHD, this VPN crosses the finish line with excessive energy to spare. Even when I indulged in a hair-raising episode of American Horror Story, buffering was a foreign concept.
In addition to its impressive speed, ExpressVPN offers a roster of 24 US locations, akin to a digital buffet of options for connecting to Hulu on your world travels. Even from the other side of the world (9,153 km away, to be exact), my New Jersey server stood like a steadfast guard, ensuring my connection remained unbroken.
What's more, ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer acts as a secret decoder ring, enabling you to watch Hulu on devices that usually don't shake hands with VPNs. PlayStation, Xbox, or even that one smart TV you got at a Black Friday sale years ago; all can be brought into the fold. The setup process was quicker than making a microwave popcorn bag. Simply jot down a code from your ExpressVPN account dashboard, feed it into your smart TV’s network settings, and voila! I found myself catching up on Hulu shows on my antiquated Samsung Tizen TV with no hiccups.
While ExpressVPN might ask for a few more pennies than its fellow VPN services, the sheer performance justifies the price tag. It's like paying extra for a VIP concert ticket - you're assured of the best experience. And with a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can test drive it on Hulu, no strings attached. And if you decide it's not your cup of tea, their customer support is there to process your refund without quibble. They’re rather nice about it, really.
CyberGhostVPN
Picture CyberGhost as the highly competent butler of your digital mansion, ensuring a seamless Hulu streaming experience. This ace up the VPN sleeve not only provides fast and reliable connections but serves them with a silver platter specifically designed for Hulu. Imagine a world where buffering is as extinct as dial-up internet, all thanks to CyberGhost’s Hulu-optimized servers. I frolicked in this paradise while renewing my subscription using their Miami server.
Using CyberGhost's Hulu-optimized servers is like walking through an automatic door; it's a breeze. The interface is as user-friendly as a Labrador puppy. A simple peck on your keyboard typing "Hulu" in the search bar under the "For streaming" tab, and you're given a list of servers that are specially designed to work magic on Hulu. Better still, some of these servers have undergone a digital personal training regimen to optimize their performance for Fire Stick and Android TV specifically.
While CyberGhost may not be as predictably consistent as ExpressVPN, akin to a weather forecast, its connections still hold strong. Think of it like a relay race with the US, UK, and Australia servers, each passing the baton without letting the speed dip below an 82 Mbps average. I was treated to uninterrupted feasts of "Santa Evita" and "House of the Dragon" in Ultra High Definition, without so much as a single awkward pause or hiccup.
Private Internet Access
Imagine a scenario where you have a myriad of IP addresses at your disposal for streaming Hulu like a monarch, that's exactly what PIA offers. This VPN is a playground teeming with server options in the US, reducing your chances of being in the middle of an overcrowded digital mosh pit. Trust me, you'd prefer your own breathing room when renewing your Hulu subscription, which I did with as much ease as butter sliding off a hot knife. With such an extensive server network, you have a buffet of alternative routes should Hulu unexpectedly pull the roadblock on one.
What sets PIA apart from the crowd is its penchant for personalization. Think of it as the bespoke suit of VPN apps. This little wonder comes with an array of widgets that are as flexible as a yoga instructor, ready to twist and bend to suit your interface aesthetic. Additionally, it hands you the reins of encryption, allowing you to choose between the Fort Knox of security - the AES 256-bit encryption, or the slightly more fleet-footed but still quite secure AES 128-bit encryption.
Now, this plethora of customization options could be a bit like being lost in a tech version of Narnia for the newly initiated. It's a lot to take in. But give it a little time, a few exploratory clicks and swipes, and you'll find the app's interface becomes as familiar and easy to navigate as your favorite neighborhood bistro.
Five Secret Passages to Hulu Land Without a US Credit Card in 2023
Juggling through the nuances of signing up for Hulu, especially without a US credit card, can make your head spin faster than a hamster on a wheel. So let's pop the lid off Pandora's box and unveil the five undercover methods to bring Hulu to your fingertips.
Before you sprint into action, let's cross off a couple of quick checks:
Make sure to equip yourself with a VPN. Any VPN on my coveted shortlist should do the trick, but I would tilt my hat towards ExpressVPN. It zips along at breakneck speeds and boasts a generous offering of US servers to select from
Now you're in the right gear, but you need to be in the right place. As Hulu only pays house visits to those who reside in the US (virtually, of course), that's where you should connect.
With these quick checks done and dusted, you're ready to proceed. Brace yourself as we unveil the five secret scrolls to gain access to the tantalizing world of Hulu.
MyGiftCardSupply: Your Key to Unlock Hulu's Magic Box
A Hulu gift card from MyGiftCardSupply is your golden ticket to the land of unlimited entertainment.
Step 1: Buying a ticket. Venture into the online bazaar of MyGiftCardSupply, and procure a Hulu gift card ranging from $25 to $100. The amount depends on how deep you want to dive into the ocean of Hulu content. Be sure to sign up if you haven't already - think of it as a friendly handshake.
Step 2: Sniff out the code. Once the gift card purchase is complete, you'll receive an email with the precious code. Open it, and gently copy the code.
Step 3: Claim your prize. Stride confidently to Hulu's redemption page, type in your hard-earned code, and create your account. Do remember to use a US address and zip code when signing up – they are quite particular about that.
Step 4: Let the show begin. Slide into Hulu's log-in page and gently type in your shiny new credentials.
Step 5: The Grand Finale. Now it's time to sit back, relax, and bask in the glory of endless entertainment on Hulu. Step into your personal streaming universe and enjoy the show!
Hitching a Ride on iTunes US: Your Unconventional Route to Hulu
Now, let's stroll down a different route, this time, a path known as 'iTunes US.'
Step 1: Set up camp in the Land of Apple. Visit Apple's website and pitch your digital tent by creating a new account. Consider this your personal American outpost in the universe of iTunes.
Step 2: Stock up on provisions. Replenish your digital coffers either directly through iTunes or via a US iTunes gift card, which is akin to your secret stash of apple cider in the cellar.
Step 3: Summon Hulu. Type "Hulu" into the search bar and download the app. Much like calling a pet, it'll come running and install itself onto your device.
Step 4: Enter the realm of Hulu. Use your iTunes funds to either get a shiny new plan or renew an existing subscription, and then log into your Hulu account. This is you officially checking into the grand Hulu Hotel.
Step 5: Savour the spectacle. With all these steps complete, you're now in a position to pay for and enjoy your Hulu account. It's time to kick back and indulge in the smorgasbord of entertainment that Hulu has to offer.
Hopping onto the Hulu Train with a Prepaid US Card: A Thrifty Globetrotter's Guide
Let's now venture down a pragmatic avenue, namely the 'Prepaid US Card' route.
The first station is "Prepaid US Card Central". You'll need to navigate your way to VISA or MasterCard, where you can choose your ticket – the prepaid card.
Next, we arrive at "Funds Station". Here, you need to fuel up your prepaid card. This can be done directly or by transferring money from your bank account, given that your card of choice supports such cheery transfers.
Having acquired your ticket and made sure it's packed with funds, it's time to board the Hulu Express at the "Hulu Account Terminal". Here, you'll need to check-in, select a subscription plan, and jot down the necessary particulars.
We're almost there. The last stop before you start your entertainment journey is "Registration Point". Here, you pay for the service using your shiny new prepaid card. Now, if this doesn't work for some reason, perhaps the ticket machine is being obstinate, don't fret – just try the gift card method instead.
With the ticketing process complete, you're all set to start watching. It's time to sit back, kick off your shoes, and let the Hulu Express whisk you away into a world of non-stop entertainment, right outside of the USA.
PayPal Your Way to Hulu Paradise: A Modern Maverick's Approach
Welcome to the "PayPal method", a trail favored by modern mavericks, digital nomads, and online shopping aficionados.
Begin this journey by constructing your own digital finance fortress – a PayPal account. You'll need to swing by PayPal and ensure you're setting up a US account. Now, it's imperative that you get this right, because Hulu can be a bit snobbish when it comes to foreign PayPal accounts. If setting up a US PayPal account starts to feel like trying to lasso a greased pig, simply revert to our old reliable – the gift card method.
Having established your PayPal account, you're now ready for the next leg of the journey. Head on over to Hulu, strut your stuff, and log in using your credentials.
Next up, it's time to pay the piper... or rather, the subscription. If your account is a newborn, fresh out of the internet womb, you can also kick off a free trial.
With these steps accomplished, it's time to kick back and start watching. Dive headlong into the ocean of your favorite Hulu shows, and swim around in the thrill of it all.
StatesCard: Your Magic Carpet Ride to Hulu Bingeing
Behold, the wonders of StatesCard, the 21st-century magic carpet ride to the land of Hulu bingeing!
Your journey starts at the port of StatesCard, where you'll need to carve out your digital presence by clicking the "Sign Up" button. Having successfully become a part of the club, add a little bit of that digital money to make it official.
Your next stop is Hulu. Log in with your carefully crafted credentials or take a bold step and create a whole new identity for yourself (strictly on Hulu, of course).
Once settled in, it's time to pay the virtual ferryman. Use the card information you secured from your new friend, StatesCard, to pay for or renew your Hulu subscription. If you do this right, you'll have successfully purchased your ticket to endless entertainment.
Having accomplished these milestones, you're now fully armed and ready to embark on the Hulu adventure. Sit back, relax, and let the world of your favorite Hulu shows envelop you.

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc. Always mention working safely.

Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books, you are a qualified applicant.

Explanation of MVO/TTO to save time:
MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.

USPS provides the training. (Maintenance jobs at least. TTO and management...GOOD LUCK)

You don't have to be crazy to work here. We'll train you. Everything but proper email usage.

21/10/1
I worked with ychild to get her to clean her room. i did not help her but tried to tell her step by step on cleaning. ochild found out and started cleaning his room. He did well but missed something small. I asked him to finish this one section and he flipped out. I did not yell at him but did start to become heated because he was throwing a fit like a toddler. spouse came bursting into the room yelling at me for yelling at ochild.I think ochild knows he just can just yell and stomp to get spouse's attention and I will get in trouble and he will get to do whatever he wants. This is when I finally made up my mind that the only option is divorce. I cannot think that this marriage is fixable now. I did the dishes, cooked supper, cleaned the living room, swept, and vacuumed. spouse asked me when was the last time I cleaned the toilets. spouse slept with the kids.
21/10/2
spouse spent all day in her room working on her school work. I got the dash cams working in both of our vehicles. Worked with the dogl while walking with her harness. I put up all the laundry except for her shirts because there is no room in our closet and we are out of hangers. I picked up all the torn up trash and dog poop in the backyard. Did a water change in the aquarium. ychild has torn up her room that she cleaned the other day. I spent about an hour outside playing with ychild and ochild. I managed to get the kids in bed around 10-10:30pm. spouse announced that she was taking a bath. At the end of the bath I went in. She started talking about how after everyone went to bed she was going to stay up in the livingroom to work on school. She then told me i came in there for a reason and to tell her what was going on. So I asked if I could go down on her that night. She got angry and told me "does not need to be taken care of." I closed the door and left but I could hear her still going off on me. I feel deflated and unloved again. I don't know why I keep trying to bring the spark back in the marriage. spouse slept in our bed last night and ychild joined us. Today I cooked a breakfast supper and made pizza for lunch. I woke up at 3:30 am and couldn't get back to sleep.
21/10/3
I started this journal and decided to try and write about the previous 2 weeks events. My goal is now to record the things I do in the house, my interactions with spouse and the kids, where spouse sleeps, and anything noteworthy on a daily basis. This morning I tried to talk to spouse (she sighed and looked annoyed when I started talking) about an interaction I had with ychild on our way to get breakfast this morning. ychild decided to talk in a way that makes it sound like she is cussing even when she isnt. I told her what I told ychild and spouse snapped at me when I tried to get into the details. If I know I am going to talk to spouse about something non-spontaneous I'm going to try and start recording the interactions. I cooked supper. spouse slept in our bed last night, ychild joined us after waking up.

Today we went to the state fair. It started out as usual when we go on the trip. late start, blaming, getting mad, yelling, her being upset. After getting to the fair the day went well. We didn't argue very much and the day was actually nice but long. Wife had a school meeting at 5. Went out to eat for supper then ice cream with the kids. As usual fight started when the kids only wanted to sit with Wife. Get home kids bathed and put in bed. Wife bought a special deodorant to help with smells in the breast/pubic area (something she is self conscious about) I helped apply it and try and kiss her breasts. She turns away and says she is cold. Helped wife put together kids lunch and backpacks for the next morning. Take the trash out. I shower and notice my wife isn't in bed when I get out so I assumed she was sleeping with the kids. She was sitting in the living room in the dark with her phone on facebook. Wife said she was going to bed but didn't want to "do anything." I go to bed also so I can spend some time with her. Once again I try and cuddle with her. I roll next to her and place my hand on her leg. I don't move it because it tickles or annoys her. After 5 min without her trying to cuddle and with her face buried in facebook I roll over. She can tell I was upset and said that she didn't try and cuddle cause my arm was pinning her down. This isn't true it was only on her leg and i wasn't applying any pressure. YChild ended up in our bed during the night.
21/10/5
Went to work today. no goodmorning or goodbye kiss. Worked all day, picked up the kids, brought them home and emptied their backpacks. Wife got home about 10min later. No hey how was your day. no hello kiss. Nothing. She disappeared into the bedroom again. Worked with Ychild on her letters because she isn't doing well in school. had a breakfast supper. Took the dogs for a walk. made OChild lunch. She complained because I had not yet done the dishes. Waited till the last minute to get their backpacks/clothes together for the morning. Complained because things were missing. feels like I never hear anything positive only ever complaints. Went to bed and wife finally makes it in. I don't really attempt to cuddle just put my arm on her leg and accidentally scratched. Thought I had made her mad so I pulled my hand back. A few minutes later and she rolled over and spooned with me (little spoon.) Its been years since this happened. Is she doing that because of my persistence and she is trying to make me happy? or is it because of a positive change. Only time will tell (success.)
21/10/6
Woke up and wife wasn't in the bed. I don't know if she woke up early or went to lay down with the kids in the night. She was in a mood when i got up. Complained because I hadn't put up the kids school laundry when it came out of the dryer so the clothes are now wrinkly. I let myself relax last night and did not do as many chores. I need to work on that and try and stay busy. ran into trouble picking the kids up from school. Their school fund raisers were supposed to come out with the kids. Ochild did not bring them out because he didn't listen to instructions from his teacher. Wife had to swing by and pick them up because I was already on the way home and the line was seriously backed up. Got home did the dishes, cooked supper, folded the laundry and put a load of laundry in, and gathered and took the trash out. Wife spent the evening once again in our bedroom but this time it was working on activities to help our daughter learn better for school. She did have a school meeting at 7 pm. I thought the kids would shower on the next day so I did not tell them to bath, but was overruled agrily by wife and gave my daughter a shower because her hair was dirty. Kids got to bed 1 hour late because wife kept overruling me on telling them to go lay down. After kids went to bed I got on my computer to play games. I put too large a load in the dryer and it took a long time to dry so I was not able to put it up before bed time. Wife went into the kitchen to make the kids lunches. I asked if I could do anything to help and she said no. I layed down in bed a little later than I was planning. Wife was very angry when she opened the dryer because I hadn't taken the clothes out and folded them, I had washed our large pile of clothes instead of the kids 1 day of clothes, when I folded the laundry I didn't put the towels in the bathroom because i did not want to interrupt her meeting so she yelled at me because the towels were not in the bathroom when she went to take a shower. I was berated very badly and once again felt unappreciated, emasculated, and unloved (hated maybe.) She said that I was doing more around the house only because I felt our marriage was failing (in a sarcastic tone of voice) and I wanted to be praised. I am doing it because it helps with my depression and honestly I am trying to get into the habit for when I inevitably divorce her. I turned off my emotions and went to sleep. No kiss goodnight and even saying goodnight.
21/10/7
Woke up at 3:30 am alone in bed. I assume the wife slept with the kids. I couldn't go back to sleep so I laid in bed. Closer to the alarm time of 4:30ish I got ready for work. When my wife came in I had to say good morning, she wasn't even going to talk to me. I had to initiate the conversation. I left 5 min early because I didn't want to be around her. I had to kiss/tell her goodbye which is usual. I'm not sure the last time the morning routine was initiated by her. several times in our marriage I have experimented with how long we would go without a kiss or an I love you that wasn’t initiated by me. Usually its several weeks and I almost feel like seeing how long it would take this time. Got home with the kids and stopped for our weekly
treat. Wife did not spend as much time in the bedroom as usual. I was tired so I did not feel like doing any cleaning. I cooked supper and we watched a show during supper. Afterwards she joined me and the kids in walking the dogs. We got back and watched a few more shows and then I helped her with lunches and getting the kids things together. Anytime something didn't go perfect she always had little comments and blamed me (like when she couldn't find Ychilds clothes or if a tape was missing.) all in all, the day wasn't bad and wasn't good either. I went to bed a little early and she decided to stay up and watch one of her own movies. I did not kiss her or say I love you. She did not say anything about it.
21/10/8
Woke up at a normal time. Wife and Ychild were in bed with me. The morning went ok and Ychild was very chipper and loving. Got home from work with the kids and went out picked up groceries and ate out. we stopped at some yard sales and had a decent fun time with minimal arguing. Got home and put up the groceries. wife's parents were coming over the next day and "we" cleaned the house. I did the dishes, cleaned the counters, vacuumed and shampooed the carpets, picked up the living room, cleaned off the fireplace, put up the clothes in the living room. It was 10:30 I kept telling the kids to go to bed and Wife kept overriding me. Telling me its the weekend and the kids should be able to stay up. I think 10:30 is too late for an 8 and 5 year old to stay up. I told wife I was tired and was going to bed. She complained that she was going to have to stay up and clean the house by herself. She said i didn't do enough. The only thing she could come up with when i asked her what i didn't do was keep the entertainment center clean and organized. Apparently i'm fine living in an empty house. Funny when she was a stay at home mom after she got laid off and then during the pandemic, the house was never cleaned. She stayed home all day everyday and never cleaned nor cooked supper or did the dishes. I feel like I am bending over backwards not only am I not receiving credit for what I have done. I am actually getting complaints for not doing enough. She eventually went to bed with the kids while I slept in my bed alone again. Not that I wanted her company after making me feel like that.
21/10/9
Got up around 7:00. I finished cleaning the carpets in the living room, cleaned the trash from the carpets, and swept the bathroom. We went looking at garage sales. Parents got there a little late in the day and spent more time with her sister than they did with us which is usually. I tried to get the kids to go to bed at a decent hour but was once again overruled by my Wife. She said the kids are on a school break and should be able to stay up later. I agreed but didnt think staying up till 11:30 at night should be the answer. They should be in bed at 9:30 and asleep at 10:00. Needless to say Wife slept with the kids.
21/10/10
Today we spent a great deal of the day traveling and going to yard and estate sales. It was a decent day with minimal arguing except for right before supper trying to get the kids to not cry when we wont buy them everything they want. Wife said I am fuel to the fire for the kids. It upset me that she constantly bad mouths my parenting style. Apparently not putting up with children throwing fits and actually punishing them instead of just letting everything play out without saying anything is a bad day. A thunderstorm came late in the evening and none of us went to bed before it passed. Wife slept with the kids again.
21/10/11
We all woke up early and took wife to work. When we got back I let the kids play and be kids. We did work on Ychilds worksheets for school. Ochild had a dr apt then we went to pick up wife. Got home and cooked supper and did the dishes. I also vacuumed the livingroom. spouse spent the entire evening in the bedroom working on schoolwork. Wife slept with the kids again.
21/10/12
Woke up with Ychild in my bed and wife at work. Had a good day with the kids. Ychild lost one of her (only pairs) of shoes. They played all day in the living room having a good time. Had leftovers for supper. Wife spent all evening in the bedroom working on schoolwork. Wife slept with the kids again. I was feeling very alone again. Just reminded me how we don't have much of a marriage.
21/10/13
Woke up early alone in bed. Had a good day with the kids. Helped them build a big fort in the living room. I did some woodworking today and got the pole saw from our neighbor. Walked the dogs before supper. Supper didn't turn out well, the pork chops were freezer burnt so we got taco casa. Wife spent the evening in the bedroom working on schoolwork. Another thunderstorm rolled in around bedtime. Wife slept with the kids again. That's 6 days straight sleeping in my bed alone.
21/10/14
Woke up at 3:30am got up but went back to bed and eventually sleep around 4:30-5:00. Woke up with Ychild in bed. I took the kids to several stores today and changed the water in the aquarium . Wife got back home and let the kids play. Once my wife got home I cooked supper and washed the dishes while she disappeared into the bedroom. Went back there and she was just laying in bed saying she was tired while watching tv. I convinced her to come and eat supper with the family at the table. Afterwards she went back to the bedroom for more bed and tv. She would rather spend time laying in bed and watching tv than spend a little time with me. I have been all alone with 2 kids all day (actually for the last 4 days.) Ochild convinced her to come out of the bedroom to show her something on his tv. I don't know what to do and no longer feel connected to my wife, I feel like I am all alone. Wife came out and before laying down with the kids mentioned I havent kissed her goodnight in a few days and to come kiss her. It was just a smooch but at least she took notice. I told her it feels like she wanted me to do that lately. She told me she was just stressed and tired from school work. She slept with the kids again tonight.
21/10/15
Woke up with Ychild in bed with me. Got the kids up and fed them breakfast. Wife got home early and we went to an estate sale. I made hotdogs for supper. Kids went to bed late. Wife complained about them not being asleep. I told her what she said about them being on a school break and me getting in trouble with her earlier for putting them to bed before 10:00 pm. It didn't matter, it was still my fault and still upset. Wife slept with the kids again.
21/10/16
Wife got up earlier than me. We left the house around 9 to go look at some neighborhood garage sales. had a decent day in the car with minimal fussing. Got home a little later than planned. Had Ychild start cleaning her messy room. Wife started complaining about the messy house again saying she is the only one who cleans. Apparently I am not doing a good enough job. What a surprise. did some laundry today. got the kids to bed around 9:30. They were constantly out of bed until 11:00pm with different things. I was getting upset with them and my wife strolled in and took over as usual as soon as the kids started crying. She actually came to bed with me tonight. I tried to cuddle with her but as usual she huffed as soon as I put my arm around her. She said she doesn't mind me cuddling, she just doesnt like it when I move my hand. She made no effort to return the love. I am glad for these interactions because it reminds me that I am not loved and why I want a divorce.
21/10/17
Woke up around 6:00 am with a stomach ache and bloated. Down to 238 lbs. Wife spent the day in the bedroom working on school. I did some laundry, trimmed the trees in the yard, and put out bulk pickup items. Cooked chicken fajitas for supper. Wife came down sick with something and went to bed early. Kids were asleep by 9:00. Wife was asleep by the time I came to bed.
21/10/18
Went to work. Not a bad day there. Got home and cooked supper, took the dogs for a walk. Tried to put the kids to bed at 8:00 Ychild started crying and got wife to agree to let her sleep in our bed tonight. All they have to do is turn on the water works. The wife doesn't want to hear them cry so she caves. Ychild slept with me and wife.
21/10/19
Went to work. Picked up the kids and went home. Cooked hotdogs for supper. Put up some laundry. Wife cut the Ochild and my hair. Didn't go for walk today. Got kids to bed on time. Wife slept with the kids.
21/10/20
Worked from home today. Picked the kids up for a half day. Stopped at chick-fil-a for lunch. Went to the fish store with the kids. Met Wife for the Ychild's parent teacher conference. Cooked chicken fajita nachos for lunch. Gathered trash, did laundry, and did the dishes. Cut out the pumpkin with the kids. Wife and I watched Netflix until bed. We lay down and I decided to try cuddling again. I rolled over to her and she actually reciprocated. She put her leg around mine and held my hand. It felt really nice.
21/10/21
Went to work. It was an uneventful morning and work. Picked up the kids and called my wife to meet us at DQ for a treat. We got home and my wife wasn't feeling well. She didn't eat supper. Me and my kids took the dogs for a walk while my wife stayed behind and took a bath. We watched netflix until bed again. Got the kids in bed on time. When the kids threw a fit when they wanted Wife to cover them up she said something in a low voice and refused to tell me what she said. I kept asking her and she finally told me "it's probably why you resent me." I didn't say anything because it was partially true. I do resent her because the kids prefer her, but they only prefer her because she constantly gives in their fits and I do not. So I keep being the bad guy and she get to be the fun yes mom. Later we started working on the kids' lunches. I got a bottled drink off the table and started to open it.She asked if it was old and I said i don't think so. She started to complain at me because she didn't want to give the kids an old drink. I started to explain why I didn't think it was old (the cap still had seals on most of the cap.) She told me I was talking too loud (I wasn't, I was talking in a normal voice.) She told me she didn't need me anymore so I left and went to bed. We went to bed angry with
each other.
21/10/22
Woke up still angry at her because it was such a little issue to get mad about. Things like this happen all the time. Little things that don't matter in the long run end up being blown up beyond what it should have. had a decent day at work then went and got the kids. ate at the olive garden. Ochild asked if he could have her phone. I explained to him that he could only have his tablet, not her phone or tablet. He got upset and wife immediately caved and gave him her phone. I explained to my wife that we agreed 2 weeks ago and they haven't had either this entire time. their behavior is much better but she said she isn't feeling well and just didn't want to hear it. i got home and unloaded the groceries. My wife started complaining about me unloading the groceries wrong. Apparently I'm supposed to put them on the table starting at the far end then work down the table from there. Like it makes a difference if you take an extra step either way the entire table is filled up and it doesn't matter which end you start on. Then my wife complained that I hadn't cleaned up the blood drops from the dog yet. I literally was only home for 2 minutes before she got home then we left but it's supposed to be my job to get it done with no time to spare. I cleaned it up and she started complaining that I cleaned it wrong. I used a baby wipe when I should have used clorox wipes. There is litteral pee on the floor and she is worried that the blood wasn't sanitized. Makes no sense. This all happened within 20 minutes. Needless to say she slept with the kids again.
21/10/23
Woke up for overtime on a saturday. i worked 7 hours on a boat on the lake. Come home and the wife is sitting on the couch watching tv and the kids are right next to her zoned out with electronics. she didn't do anything all day and has been binge watching netflix. she said
She wanted to go to a local festival today. I fixed myself a pbj for lunch then did the dishes. We went next door to help the neighbors put on their pool cover. After that we went to watch a country band perform at a local festival. We were there for 2 hours and she seemed
upset with me because she knows i do not like crowds and i told her i was there because it's what she wanted to do. that's supposed to be my job to do things i don't like to support her but I guess i am actually supposed to like it to avoid offending her. The kids were
horrible and kept fighting over her phone. It seems like im never gonna get her to put her foot down. Came back home and watched the last episode of season one of our favorite shows. Kids stayed up late and the wife slept with the kids.
21/10//24
Had a decent night's sleep. The kids were screaming when I woke up. Kids had a full day of playing. I took Ochild with me when I went to the store and I bought him lunch. We get home and I throw the kids' laundry into the washer. Wife and the kids made a pumpkin into a puppy for
Ochild's book report. I take Ychild to the store to get her own pumpkin. Kids are playing a game with a hula-hoop like mirror-mirror. My son asks the mirror who is the laziest and he puts it up to me. It really hurt my feelings. Wife talked to him and told him all the things I do (dishes, cooking supper, laundry, sweep/mop, vacuuming, gardening, mowing.) She listed all these things. I talked to her about it later and she said "well" like she really thinks I am lazy. She just listed off all the things I do and she talks to me like I am lazy. Ychild threw a fit at bedtime because her required stuffed animal is dirty from the dog. I begin telling her that she needs to take care of it and this wouldn't happen. Wife gets onto me about trying to teach her life lessons. Wife allows ychild to sleep in our bed with us. I don't think any of my lessons will ever stick when wife is there to overrule me and go softer on the kids. At least I didn't sleep alone tonight.
21/10/25
Woke up and went to work. Uneventful day at work. Get the gets and bring them home. I put up the laundry and started a new load. Picked up the living room and then cooked supper (smothered pork chops.) Afterward we walked the dogs (wife got home and was tired so she changed into pajamas) ychild was upset and wants her mommy to walk with us so she got peeved but changed into street clothes and we walked together as a family. We get back and sit on the couch for the next 3 hours watching netflix. Put the kids to bed then finish our netflix binge. After I volunteered to help fix the kids' lunch for the next day. She praised me for the speed that I made their lunch. Unfortunately ychild had spilled something in her lunchbox and I cleaned it. It got wet when I cleaned and my wife flipped out and got in a bad mood. the next 20 min was kicking me out of the kitchen, complained because i forgot to bring ychild's sweater in from the car, upset because i did not put the laundry into the dryer. I went to bed alone.
21/10/26
Woke up with my wife and ychild in bed with me. I started getting ready and my wife started complaining to ychild that she will have to go dig through the laundry basket to get socks because they never get put up. I spent all my time between getting home and cooking supper and putting up laundry. The both of us sat on our butts and watched netflix for hours the previous evening. we could have done those together but we didn't. Instead it's my fault because I didn't do it. Its tiring bending over backwards, feeling like you are doing the brunt of the housework, the only one working, the only one cooking and feeling unappreciated and getting bitched at for minor things. especially the 1st thing in the morning to our ychild within earshot of me. She is very passive aggressive and saying these things to my kids undermines my authority and prevents me from being an effective parent. Its things like this that leads me to believe that's why my son thinks I am lazy. I wonder what she has said to him so that I didn't overhear. I got the kids from school and brought them home. I immediately put up the clothes that had been folded but not put up. I cleaned the fish tank of dead fish and snails. I cooked supper (hamburgers), i wasn't feeling well so we didn't go for a walk, I got an old laptop together for Ochild to use. Wife and I watched TV for about an hour and got on my computer. Went to bed alone.
21/10/27
Wife and I had an argument at the end of the night. Went to bed upset.
21/10/28
Woke up with my wife and ychild in bed. Didn't say goodbye to my wife when I left. I had a decent day at work. Picked up the kids and brought them home. We didn't walk the dogs today. Wife had to stay late at school. Wife went to bed early with the kids.
21/10/29
Woke up in bed alone. Left again without saying goodbye to my wife. She was upset but I guess doesnt realize that our marriage is in trouble or just doesn't care and wants to maintain an illusion. Didn't have to pick up the kids from school today. We went out to eat for supper. Wife slept with the kids again. came home and mowed the lawn. We ended up eating out at Tuscan Slice. came home and the wife slept with the kids.
21/10/30
Woke up alone. Worked 10 hours of overtime. got home and immediately left to go do some halloween stuff at the big church. had a decent time with little arguing. Afterwards I ate at CFLA. Daughter got upset because she wanted to switch seats and I said no. I am tired of giving in
to the kids' every demand. When she started throwing a fit and told her she was about to get a spanking. Wife got upset because I will actually spank them and she thinks it doesn't do any good. The kids only really seem to do this when they know mommy is around cause when it's just me they behave. They know they can always get mommy on their side and turn her against daddy just by crying. The wife stayed in the bedroom working on schoolwork after we got back. The kids stayed up really late (11:30). went to bed alone.
21/10/31
Woke up alone a little later. Wife and ychild had slept with me. We ended up staying home most of the day. Wife stayed in the bedroom working on schoolwork. I played with the kids, swept, vacuumed, did the laundry, cleaned the living room, and cleaned the aquarium. We went to a local church event for trunk or treat and then we took the kids trick or treating down downtown. It was a decent night. We got home and the kids went to bed a little late.

2023.05.31 17:48 bitemy Christians bullied an Indiana school district into canceling a school play with LGBTQ characters. The students raised more than $83,000 and put the play on in a professional theatre.

(This excerpt is from a Washington Post article written by Hannah Natanson.)
FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Sydney Knipp, 16, tiptoed to stage’s edge and peered around the black curtain at the nearly 1,500 people waiting for the play to start. It was the largest audience she had ever seen.
In a few minutes, Sydney was supposed to stride before them, braids streaming, to deliver the opening monologue as Alanna Dale in “Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood,” a gender-bending take on Sherwood Forest’s beloved bandit.
Dotted among the crowd, Sydney saw, were security personnel in bulletproof vests. At the entrance, theatergoers were submitting to bag checks and a metal detector wand. Behind Sydney stood Fia, her 14-year-old sister, costumed as Much the Miller’s son.
Sydney and Fia, and their characters, were the reason for the security — the reason this play was happening not at school but at an outdoor theater in the girls’ hometown. Alanna confesses her love for a woman in the 16th scene. Much declares they are nonbinary two scenes later. The LGBTQ storylines drew complaints from parents, spurring Carroll High School to cancel “Marian” in February out of concern for students’ safety.
But the cast of two dozen teenagers decided to put the play on anyway. Now, on a chilly evening in late May — after raising almost $84,000, booking Foellinger Theatre and whirling through 2½ weeks of late-night rehearsals squeezed between Advanced Placement exams and finals — it was opening night for a show adults had warned them not to do.
Sydney sidled to her little sister. “How are you feeling?”
The teens believed — knew — they were part of something bigger. They knew schools across the country are nixing plays and musicals that feature gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender roles, often due to parent objections. They were aware Republican politicians are passing a record-breaking wave of laws restricting the rights of LGBTQ children, and that Fort Wayne trends White and red.
The teens also knew they had fans: the thousands who bought $15.50 tickets or donated to their fundraiser; the local theater groups who lent decorations; even “Marian” playwright Adam Szymkowicz, whom they had met on a Zoom call.
But in these last moments with her sister, Fia had something to confide.
She was thinking about what producer Nathan Gotsch said a half-hour before showtime. Should any hecklers emerge, he told students, ushers would escort them out. One student, dressed as a king’s guard, had raised black armored gloves and promised to deter disrupters with his fists, earning laughs. But Fia wasn’t laughing now.
“If someone yells something,” Fia whispered to Sydney, “I think I’m going to cry.”
Sydney pointed to the audience. “Dude, there are so many people with dyed hair out there,” she said. “We’re going to be okay.”
She laid her arm on Fia’s shoulder. Fia rested her forehead on Sydney’s hand. The sisters stood, curled in an embrace, as the crowd began to hush.
Three months earlier, Meadowe Freeman arrived early to school for a surprise meeting called by her principal and theater director.
Auditions had just wrapped for Carroll High’s production of “Marian.” The 18-year-old, who chose theater because “I’m not very sporty,” had anticipated teasing from students about the play’s LGBTQ characters. But she never expected what she heard that day: that some parents disliked the play so much it couldn’t continue.
“You read about it on the news,” Meadowe said, “but you never expect it to happen in your school.”
Sitting near the front of the room was Tristan Wasserman, 18. He watched his friends start to cry. Walking from the meeting, he decided: The show would go on.
That night, Tristan hunted up the email of “Marian” playwright Szymkowicz. He researched the name of a reporter with Fort Wayne’s 21 Alive News. He fired off versions of the same email.
“Hello,” he wrote, “my name is Tristan Wasserman … It was actually on my 18th birthday that we found out that we wouldn’t be doing Marian.”
His efforts yielded news coverage and, ultimately, 5,600 signatures on a petition to reinstate the play. One of Tristan’s friends, Stella Brewer-Vartanian, president of a left-leaning political club at Carroll High, launched Twitter and Instagram accounts devoted to reversing the cancellation. But the school stuck by its decision.
So Tristan began recruiting students to speak at the next school board meeting. If enough teens explained why it was wrong, he figured, the adults would have to listen.
On Feb. 27, Tristan, Stella — who wasn’t part of the theater program but felt outraged by what she called adult bullying — and roughly 20 high schoolers showed up, some with prepared speeches.
Before most could speak, a woman rose. Kaye Niman said she was a taxpayer, a mother and a pastor’s wife. “Marian” — with its “LGBT whatever, however many ABCs you want to put on it” — was immoral, Niman said.
“What we believe in is what the Bible says, and the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin,” said Niman, who did not respond to a request for comment. “It’s forgivable, don’t get me wrong, it’s forgivable and we love them, but nevertheless … I applaud whoever made the decision to not have this play go on.”
As Niman wrapped up, 16-year-old Peyton Stratton sat picturing the role she had hoped for: that of Marian/Robin, who leads the troupe of Merry Men. Peyton, who wants to attend law school, admired Marian for her ferocity, wit and determination to protect the people she loves.
Telling herself to summon those traits now, Peyton walked to the microphone. She reminded the board of school anti-bullying initiatives that teach children not to tolerate hate.
“By taking down this play, you’re following the opposite of that message,” she said. “You are teaching students to fold at the first sign of struggle.”
Stella told the adults they were writing themselves into history as “hateful.”
And Tristan gave a promise: “I have not rested,” he said, “nor will I rest until this decision is reversed.”
Students headed home with hope. Tristan was in his bedroom when he got a text alerting him that the superintendent, Wayne Barker, was speaking about the play.
“This came down to an issue where our principal felt that it was going to be an unsafe activity for our students to participate in because of how divisive it was becoming,” Barker said. “I support his decision … I’m comfortable with why he did what he did.”
In a statement to The Washington Post, district spokeswoman Lizette Downey said the decision to cancel “Marian” was due not only to parent complaints, but primarily to “disruptions already occurring between students directly involved within the theater department.” She did not specify what those “disruptions” were.
Superintendent Barker declined repeated interview requests.
For a while, the students were lost. Some pondered putting on the play outside school, Stella said, but no one knew how. Then Stella got a message saying a local man she’d never met wanted to talk to her.
A former teacher born and raised in Fort Wayne, Nathan Gotsch, 40, sympathized with administrators’ plight — but felt more for the students. And, he felt, he was perfectly positioned to help.
Gotsch, who attended film school at the University of Southern California, spent his 20s working in entertainment in Los Angeles. After stints in education and journalism, he had just run unsuccessfully for Congress. Taken together, it meant Gotsch had the know-how and the network of political, activist and theater contacts the students would need to stage “Marian” themselves.
Over a video call, the idea took shape. Gotsch agreed to serve as overall producer, and four teens — Tristan, Stella, Meadowe and Kaitlyn Gulley, head of Carroll’s Gay-Straight Alliance — would become student-producers.
Gotsch set up a GoFundMe to pay for the play; it pulled in $80,000 in under two weeks. Nonprofit Fort Wayne Pride, which advocates for LGBTQ rights, stepped in as fiscal agent, managing the money.
Nathan and others identified two dozen students willing to act in “Marian” and assigned them parts. He hired a professional director and crew to handle stage management, engineering, sets, sound, costumes and lighting. He secured Foellinger Theatre for May 20 and coordinated security with Indiana State Police and parks personnel.
Meanwhile, Stella and Kaitlyn promoted the play at a “No Hate Fort Wayne” rally and a Democratic Party gathering. Meadowe and Tristan liaised between adults and students in the production — while Meadowe learned a role as a guard and Tristan served as assistant stage manager and sound designer, at one point imitating pigeon calls for the play’s soundtrack.
Rehearsals — running after school and on weekends — started May 3. The student-actors had fewer than 4o hours, across less than three weeks, to learn their lines.
Teens were facing APs and fast-approaching finals. They were fielding phone calls from journalists and messages from actors who wanted to cheer them on — support they appreciated but which took time.
The Friday before opening night, Peyton arrived late after ferrying over three students who lacked cars. Her hair was already braided in the intricate coils required for the role she had coveted: Marian.
She fast-walked into a kitchen tucked below the theater to cries of “Peyton! They need you in makeup!” and “Peyton! Go straight to makeup!”
“I know,” Peyton said, crossing to a wall and scribbling her initials onto a sign-in sheet.
She eyed the steaming

2023.05.29 19:15 PSHoffman Pacifist: 6 - Hrutskuld Don't Have Orphanages

<< First < Prev Next >
***
Caly and Olm followed the dust storm out of the city and down into the scrublands, passing the scattered parade of repulsor bikes and homesteader trucks and old sandcutter boats that were so laden with luggage they didn’t hover, so much as drag along the sand. Eventually, the scrublands gave way to even scrubbier lands, and it was just Caly and Olm alone. The hills no longer grew with an abundance of weeds, only patches of sharp-looking grass, and twists and clumps of gnarled cacti. Pipes of stiff plants cast shadows down the ridges of the hills, looking every bit like people standing along the red cliffs, raising their hands to beg for a ride.
Coordinates ticked away on the corner of her visor, routing their path to the orphanage. The tails of the storm showered the hills with dust, dust, and more dust. But when it came to the cracked flats, its fury dried up, and it spread into a tan haze across all that empty land. You couldn’t ask for better terrain. Caly leaned forward in the stirrups and Olm squeezed tighter around her waist. She throttled on, and the bike reared and screamed as it plunged into the haze, leaving a sandy vortex in their wake.
They thundered across the desert. Her legs went numb, and even then, she kept going.
A shift, on the horizon was the only warning. A gap rose up out of nowhere, a massive canyon deeper than it was wide. She yanked on the brakes, and shoved the repulsor hard against the sand as she tried to halt the bike’s forward movement. Not soon enough. Caly cursed and threw the bike into a turn until they sped along the edge of the cliff.
“Sorry,” she growled. She hadn’t seen the canyon until they were practically staring down into it.
Olm didn’t say anything about their near miss, no criticism, no disapproving intake of breath. She was quietly grateful for that.
Both of them stayed seated in silence for a long moment, taking in the view. Entire cities could’ve fit down there, and no one would know. Plants grew in the cracks and shelves down the cliff faces, and one enterprising old tree had found enough dirt to make a home on a rocky outcropping jutting halfway across the canyon. Far below, the glint of brown water suggested that a creek might be down there, hidden in shadow and dry, tangled brush.
Olm grunted. Caly turned her head to follow his gaze, down the other side of the canyon. At first, she thought she was looking at some huge shadow cutting across the canyon. Her helmet zoomed in on a structure, black and metallic, that jutted from one end of the gap to the other. Spikes large enough to spear a spacecraft jutted up from its twisting form. The structure, which looked more like the intertwined roots of some moon-sized tree, growing through the stone.
“What is that?”
“Only the Dead Ones know,” Olm said.
Like the Spirines of the Independent Cities, the root bridge was made of that black, glittering substance favored by the Dys. Not quite metal. Maybe, once, it dammed the river, but the river had cut beneath it, and kept on its winding trail, so the Root looked more like an exposed, planet-sized rib.
“Let’s head South,” Olm said. “We’ll find another crossing.”
“That thing looks sturdy enough.”
“It’s Dyss.”
“So? We’re just passing over it. Bike won’t even touch the thing.”
Olm rumbled his discomfort.
“You think the human crossed somewhere else?” Caly cocked her head, a challenge.
Olm grunted, as if to say “Fine.”
The Bridge grew at an angle. While the opposing side rose smoothly to the top of the cliff, their side began with a bit of a drop. “Hang on,” she said, as she lined up the bike and revved the repulsors. They flew off the cliff, and she pulled up hard to keep the heavy nose level as they fell toward the Dyssian dam, or whatever it was. They crunched on impact. And then, her stomach dropped as the repulsor almost slid off the smooth, mottled-black structure. Then, it was smooth riding. They hovered a foot or two above the Bridge, but even so, Olm’s hands crushed her shoulders under his anxious grip. Normally, he hated when she pulled the throttle, so she was surprised when he leaned forward and spoke in a tense voice, “Faster.”
She had to resist ramping off the other side. With sand once more under their feet, Olm let go of her, leaned back in the saddle, and gave a loud sigh. She glanced in the mirror, and saw him squeezing his eyes shut, the cracks in his skins glowing a dull red.
“Need a rest?” she asked.
“I thought we were trying to catch up to him.”
“No sense going in unprepared. Be ready, or be ready to die, right?”
“I am always ready for death.” Olm sniffed. Looked back at the Bridge, its gnarled spines standing sentry over the canyon. “But let’s not camp here.”
They rode until the air was so chill, Caly couldn’t feel her fingers. Her visor’s heaters struggled to keep up without fogging up her helmet, so they dismounted and built a small camp in the shadow of a rocky berm. Olm set out his pocket fire, a small spherical device that gave off a warm, blue glow. They used the bike and their own bodies to shield the light from any far off watchers. The sunset lit up a torn tuft of cloud. It looked like the last, falling petal of a fiery rose.
As the sun waned, one of Nowhere’s moons seemed to gain strength. Caly spotted the Hyperlane not far off, a string of double lights spread across the sky like a constellation of twin arrows, side by side.
When the Hyperlane started to glow, Caly stood up.
She watched it, for a long moment. Gathering light, going from a pale fuzz to full blue and into white as all that pent-up energy flushed out. And then, it was just those two strings of light once more.
“More Auran Arais,” Caly said.
“Floaters? How can you tell?”
“Helmet caught their IDs. That’s the second batch of freighters this week. Headed out to the new belts, I’d guess.”
Olm looked up, though his hands stayed hovering over the pocket fire, said, “More and more these days. Wonder why?”
The Hyperlanes were not one way to cross the systems of the Synod—they were the only way. Without them, the Synod was nothing more than a series of isolated planets, separated by millions of light years. Once, Caly had asked her mother, “Why don’t we just build more?”
“We didn’t build them,” her mother said, disgusted that her own child would ask such an inane question. “We only discovered them. It was the Dyss who set all this in motion.”
The Synod’s ability to power the lanes was severely limited. Getting passage to the Synod’s core (where everyone wanted to be) was more expensive than going out. So the only people who came all this way, to New Nowhere—the last junction on the furthest frontier—were prospectors, fortune seekers, families in dire need, dreamers or fools (which were the same thing), the odd adventurer and thrill seeker, and, of course, the exiles. Like Olm. Like me.
Out here, there was only one hyperlane, and the Synod was not keen on wasting the reserves to keep it running. Even the Auran Arais—those patient masters of interstellar industry—only sent the odd mega-freighter to work the belts beyond. If the lane was lighting up again, twice in one week, something big was happening back home.
But what? And why now? The Couran Unity was still gathering their support in the Councils, both Mass and Crown. It would be decades before their plans went into motion.
She stared up at the hyperlane, as if she could demand answers from it. She stood, forgetting how cold and tired she was, until Olm tugged on her sleeve, and offered her a piece of dried biscuit and a clod of cheese so cold it was almost frozen. Caly flipped her visor open, and wolfed it down.
As they settled in for the night, she scanned the horizon one last time, searching for lifeforms. Her visor illuminated only the strange, urchin-like plants that grew in clusters along the shadowed parts of the desert. Feathery fronds stuck out of the spines and waved in the wind, catching airborne microbes, or whatever it was they did for food.
“Thank the stars for the Synod’s Finest,” Olm said, as he pulled out a couple of emergency packs and bedrolls from the top trunk of the enforcer’s bike. Caly took a bedroll, the metallic fabric crinkling as she laid it out. She curled as close to the pocket flame as she could without melting her bedroll, and willed herself to relax. She started to dim her visor to block out the light from the stars, when Olm muttered something from the bedroll next to hers.
“What?” Caly turned over.
“Can’t stop thinking about him,” Olm grumbled.
“The human?”
Olm rolled over and propped himself up on a huge elbow, “One second, he was there. The next—you saw it, didn’t you?”
“I didn’t see anything. There was too much dust.”
“Exactly. How fast did he get up to your tower?”
“Maybe the human’s got a double. Like Split Agasgar?”
“No,” Olm said. “It was only him.”
They both sat in silence.
She’d never seen him like this. There was something about Olm’s quiet contemplation that dampened her enthusiasm for the new plan. Tomorrow’s problem.
The chill bit into her suit and she sank deeper into her crinkly bedroll and shoved her hands under her arms. Her thoughts turned from the new plan to old plans gone awry. To friends, become enemies. And then, as always, to Caspian, and to the dream of a life, long left behind.
Olm woke her before the sun of dawn spilled its golden blood over the horizon. They saddled up, this time with Olm riding pilot, and Caly leaning back in the cushy passenger seat. When they crossed a rough mountain pass, they found themselves in an ocean of gray and green grass. In the foothills, some enormous mass of cacti crowded out the grass, and created impassable mounds covered in spikes and tall-sprouting stems that waved heavily with bright-colored fruit. Almost like the plants were tempting them to come closer. A herd of scave boars chewed thoughtfully on the outer edges of the cacti mounds, their tongues thicker than the plates of thorny cacti could penetrate. One of them watched Caly and Olm hovering through grass and thorn with bored interest, just watching and chewing.
The foothills descended into a valley, carved by a few slow-moving streams of brown water. Majestic cliffs lined the valley walls, steep and painted with hundreds of segments, each one a different shade of red. Caly found herself wondering how those pathetic little streams could carve something so beautiful. They rode into the narrow beneath the cliffs and, even with the sun high overhead, the light failed to reach them, failed to warm the chill of the shadows.
There was a silhouette at the end of the canyon, standing still with its head upturned and enrobed in sunlight. Caly pointed it out, and Olm slowed the bike to a humming crawl.
“Wait. It’s just rocks,” she said, “Thought it was someone waiting for us.”
But Olm kept the bike tuned low, moving carefully and as soundlessly as he could, the water barely rippling under the repulsor. Even when they passed the stack of rocks (or wind-carved stone, or whatever it was), he kept his form hunched low and his eyes cast up at the increasingly-cracked canyon walls.
“Olm?”
“Dyss,” he said.
“How do you know?”
“I smell it,” Olm sniffed meaningfully.
They turned the last bend of the canyon, and looked down upon a forest of black stone, sprouting from the red sand. No, not stone, Caly thought, as she gazed over the labyrinths of glittering spires and obsidian fangs jutting up from the sand. This is the work of the Dead Ones. Sweeping statues of that ancient, brushed metal stood watch like misshapen sentinels, twisting up from the stone. They marched along the ridge like the backplates of some enormous reptile. Black arches marched up the sides of the valley and when the wind blew through them, it made a sound like a mournful choir, ten thousand voices.
“They walked here, once.” Olm said, wrinkling his nose. His shoulders were so tense, they almost reached his ears. His eyes scanned the black towers and arches and jagged scales bursting from the earth, all that obsidian metal glittering in the rising sun.
“Should we turn back?” Though they were alone, Caly felt the need to whisper, as if something about this place would know they had come. The Bridge was one thing, but even she could feel that gentle, insidious tug in her chest. It was those singing voices in the wind.
“No. You were right the first time. Let fear guide your way, and you will never find your glory.”
Olm leaned over (making the bike tip slightly) and grabbed a fistful of red dirt. He threw it up, letting it shower on his head as muttered some hrutskuld prayer for safe passage, though not in those exact words. It was more like asking Death to turn a blind eye while they crossed, in exchange for a more gruesome end at a later date.
Meanwhile, the wind sang through the blades and arches. An itch grew between her shoulder blades.
“Coordinates say the orphanage is through this valley.” She said.
“What kind of orphanage would be in a place like this?”
“Well,” Caly said, raising her helmet’s volume to be heard over the choir of dead voices, “If the human made it through here, then we can too.”
Olm made a doubtful rumble in his throat. But he pushed the bike forward, and they began the long, winding trek through the maze.
They rambled through jagged teeth and curving towers, around bends of treacherous cliffs. Rainpaths crisscrossed the sands and smooth slabs of rock, tinted red with iron or white from limestone powder. Olm kept blinking, like he was trying to clear his vision, and at one point he asked Caly, “Did you say something?”
“No.”
“Thought I heard … never mind.”
“Let me drive,” Caly said. Olm didn’t argue. He slid back, and started massaging his temples, and muttered something about how it would be better if the dead remembered to stay dead.
The sooner they left this place, the better.
On one sheer cliff, someone had hammered stakes into the rock to use as handholds, but only one stake still remained. There was a cave where a tattered rucksack hidden in the shadows.
“Someone lived here,” she said.
“Must’ve been mad.”
“Or desperate.”
“Or both.”
When the ground became too treacherous, Olm had to lead the bike on foot, slowly hovering behind him as he pulled it with a rope tied around his waist. They had to pull it through a bend, scraping the metal on stone, when a sound up high made them both stop. Stones and pebbles slid down the cliff and skittered over their path, but Caly saw nothing above them.
She turned her scanners on full power, and left them running, even though it drained her suit. She could make up the charge later.
By midday, the Dead One’s ruins dwindled to knee-high shapes, so the sun struck the sharp rocks and the whole valley radiated with its heat, until even Olm was sweating. There wasn’t enough power for Caly’s fans, and her suit stuck to her every time she moved. She took off her gloves, and peeled back her sleeves, but kept her helmet in place.
They trudged up a steep slope with Olm dragging the bike, each footstep only gave a handful of centimeters, each breath leaving her lungs wanting more. At the top, they gasped and drank in the thin air.
Far below, there was a creek, muddy and brown and small enough in some places that Caly thought she might simply step over it. As it rolled down the valley, it collected dozens of other small streams and yet, it never seemed to grow any wider. But there were trees—actual trees—growing along the rocky bank. Some were sheltered in the cliffs, though even they drove their gnarled roots down to the creek. They looked like shriveled old men, bent by the dry centuries. But further up the creek, a copse of trees stood proud and tall above the rest—dark green steeples of the highland pines, fencing in the white-barked guardia trees with their broad leaves arranged like a wall of bright, yellow shields to shade their branches.
Caly’s helmet pinged. It took her a moment to see it, beneath the trees: a fort, with red walls so old, they crumbled seamlessly into the red sand. A single parapet lifted from the walls, shrouded by branches and yellow leaves.
“You ever see an orphanage like that?” she asked.
“Hrutskald don’t have orphanages,” he said, “Only barracks.”
“Oh, right,” Caly said, as if she had known that.
In a way, she supposed courans were the same. If you didn’t have a House, you didn’t have anything. You got sent wherever the ruling Houses sent you, and the rest of your life was written.
She chewed her lip, trying to plan their next move. “If I were a bandit, I’d hole up in there.”
“They do love their trees. Especially ones you can hang people from.”
The fort was quiet and still. Only the trees swayed in the breeze. She could shoot from a distance all day, but this—this was unknown. Caly swallowed, her throat suddenly thick.
A true Cavalier must face far worse than this.
“Think he’s in there?” Olm asked.
Caly put every ounce of her bravado into her reply, “Only one way to find out.”

2023.05.29 06:33 JoshAsdvgi THE BAD WIFE

THE BAD WIFE

THE BAD WIFE

There was once a man who had but one wife.
He was not a chief, but a very brave warrior.
He was rich, too, so he could have had plenty of wives if he wished ; but he
loved his wife very much, and did not want any more.
He was very good to this woman.
She always wore the best clothes that could be found.
If any other woman had a fine buckskin dress, or something very pretty, the man would buy it for her.
It was summer. The berries were ripe, and the woman kept saying to her husband, "Let us go and pick some berries for winter."
" No," replied the man. " It is dangerous now. The enemy is travelling all around."
But still the woman kept teasing him to go. So one day he told her to get ready.
Some other women went, too. They all went on horseback, for the berries were a long way from camp.
When they got to the place, the man told the women to keep near their horses all the time. He would go up on a butte near by and watch.
"Be careful," he said. " Keep by your horses, and if you see me signal, throw away your berries, get on your horses and ride towards camp as fast as you can."
They had not picked many berries before the man saw a war party coming.
He signaled the women, and got on his horse and rode towards them.
It happened that this man and his wife both had good horses, but the others, all
old women, rode slow old travois horses, and the enemy soon overtook and killed them.
Many kept on after the two on good horses, and after a while the woman's horse began to get tired ; so she asked her husband to let her ride on his horse with him.
The woman got up behind him, and they went on again.
The horse was a very powerful one, and for awhile went very fast ; but two persons make a heavy load, and soon the enemy began to gain on them.
The man was now in a bad plight ; the enemy were overtaking him, and the woman holding him bound his arms so that he could not use his bow.
"Get off," he said to her. "The enemy will not kill you. You are too young and pretty.
Some one of them will take you, and I will get a big party of our people and rescue you."
" No, no," cried the woman ; " let us die here together." " Why die ? " cried the man.
" We are yet young, and may live a long time together.
If you don't get off, they will soon catch us and kill me, and then they will take you any how. Get off, and in only a short time I will get you back."
" No, no," again cried the woman ; " I will die here with you."
" Crazy person ! " cried the man, and with a quick jerk he threw the woman off.
As he said, the enemy did not kill her. The first one who came up counted coups and took her.
The man, now that his horse was lightened, easily ran away from the war party, and got safe to camp.
Then there was great mourning.
The relatives of the old women who had been killed, cut their hair and cried.
The man, too, cut off his hair and mourned. He knew that his wife was not killed, but he felt very badly because he was separated from her.
He painted himself black, and walked all through the camp, crying.
His wife had many relations, and some of them went to the man and said : " We pity you very much. We mourn, too, for our sister.
But come. Take courage. We will go with you, and try to get her back."
" It is good," replied the man. " I feel as if I should die, stopping uselessly here.
Let us start soon." That evening they got ready, and at daylight started out on foot.
There were seven of them in all. The husband, five middle-aged men, the woman's relations, and a young man, her own young brother.
He was a very pretty boy.
His hair was longer than any other person's in camp.
They soon found the trail of the war party, and followed it for some days.
At last they came to the Big River, and there, on the other side, they saw many lodges.
They crept down a coulee into the valley, and hid in a small piece of timber just opposite the camp.
Toward evening the man said : "All, my brothers. To-night I will swim across and look all through the camp for my wife.
If I do not find her, I will cache and look again to-morrow evening.
But if I do not return before daylight of the second night, then you will know I am killed.
Then you will do as you think best.
Maybe you will want to take revenge. Maybe you will go right back home.
That will be as your hearts feel."
As soon as it was dark, he swam across the river and went all about through the camp, peeping in through the doorways of the lodges, but he did not see his wife.
Still, he knew she must be there. He had followed the trail of the party to this place.
They had not killed her on the way. He kept looking in at the lodges until it was late, and the people let the fires go out and went to bed.
Then the man went down to where the women got their water from the river.
Everywhere along the stream was a cut bank, but in one place a path of steps had been made down to the water's edge.
Near this path, he dug a hole in the bank and crawled into it, closing up the entrance, except one small hole, through which he could look, and watch the people who came to the river.
As soon as it was daylight, the women began to come for water.
Turn, tiim, turn, turn, he could hear their footsteps as they came down the path, and he looked eagerly at every one.
All day long the people came and went, the young and old ; and the children played about near him.
He saw many strange people that day. It was now almost sunset, and he began to think that he would not see his wife there.
Turn, turn, tuni, turn, another woman came down the steps, and stopped at the water's edge.
Her dress was strange, but he thought he knew the form.
She turned her head and looked down the river, and he saw her face.
It was his wife. He pushed away the dirt, crawled out, went to her and kissed her.
"Kyi,'' he said, " hurry, and let us swim across the river.
Five of your relations and your own young brother are waiting for us in that piece of timber."
"Wait," replied his wife. "These people have given me a great many pretty things.
Let me go back. When it is night I will gather them up, steal a horse, and cross over to you."
" No, no," cried the man. " Let the pretty things go ; come, let us cross at once."
" Pity me," said the woman. " Let me go and get my things. I will surely come to-night.
I speak the truth." " How do you speak the truth? " asked her husband.
, " That my relations there across the river may be safe and live long, I speak the truth."
" Go then," said the man, " and get your things. I will cross the river now."
He went up on the bank and walked down the river, keeping his face hidden.
No one noticed him, or if they did, they thought he belonged to the camp.
As soon as he had passed the first bend, he swam across the river, and soon joined his relations.
" I have seen my wife," he said to them, " She will come over as soon as it is dark.
I let her go back to get some things +hat were given her."
" You are crazy," said one of the men, " very crazy.
She already loves this new man she has, or she would not have wanted to go back."
" Stop that," said the husband ; " do not talk bad of her.
She will surely come." The woman went back to her lodge with the water, and, sitting down near the fireplace, she began to act very strangely.
She took up pieces of charred wood, dirt, and ashes in her hands and ate them, and made queer noises.
" What is it?" asked the man who had taken her for a wife. " What is the matter with you ? " He spoke in signs.
The woman also spoke in signs. She answered him : " The Sun told me that there are seven persons across the river in that piece of timber.
Five of them are middle-aged, another is a young boy with very long hair, another is a man who mourns.
His hair is cut short."
The Snake did not know what to do, so he called in some chiefs and old men to advise with him.
They thought that the woman might be very strong medicine.
At all events, it would be a good thing to go and look.
So the news was shouted out, and in a short time all the warriors had mounted their best horses, and started across the river.
It was then almost dark, so they surrounded the piece of timber, and waited for morning to begin the search.
"Aja," said one of the woman's relations to her husband.
" Did I not speak the truth ? You see now what that woman has done for us."
At daylight the poor husband strung his bow, took a handful of arrows from his quiver, and said : " This is my fault.
I have brought you to this. It is right that I should die first," and he started to go out of the timber.
"Wait," said the eldest relative. " It shall not be so. I am the first to go.
I cannot stay back to see my brother die. You shall go out last." So he jumped out of the
brush, and began shooting his arrows, but was soon killed.
" My brother is too far on the road alone," cried another relation, and he jumped out and fought, too.
What use, one against so many? The Snakes soon had his scalp.
So they went out, one after another, and at last the husband was alone.
He rushed out very brave, and shot his arrows as fast as he could.
" Hold ! " cried the Snake man to his people.
" Do not kill him ; catch him.
This is the one my wife said to bring back alive. See ! his hair is cut short."
So, when the man had shot away all his arrows, they seized and tied him, and, taking the scalps of the others, returned to camp.
They took the prisoner into the lodge where his wife was.
His hands were tied behind his back, and they tied his feet, too. He could not move.
As soon as the man saw his wife, he cried. He was not afraid.
He did not care now how soon he died.
He cried because he was thinking of all the trouble and death this woman had caused. " What have I done to you," he asked his wife, " that you should treat me this way?
Did I not always use you well? I never struck you.
I never made you work hard."
"What does he say?" asked the Snake man.
" He says," replied the woman, " that when you are done smoking, you must knock the ashes and fire out of your pipe on his breast."
((( Meaning that his brother's spirit, or shadow, was travelling alone the road to the Sand Hills, and that he must overtake him.)))
The Snake was not a badhearted man, but he thought now that this woman had strong medicine, that she had Sun power ; so he thought that everything must be done as she
said.
When the man had finished smoking, he emptied the pipe on the Piegan's breast, and the fire burned him badly.
Then the poor man cried again, not from the pain, but to think what a bad heart this woman had.
Again he spoke to her. " You cannot be a person," he said. " I think you are some fearful animal, changed to look like a woman."
"What is he saying now? " asked the Snake.
** He wants some boiling water poured on his head," replied the woman.
" It shall be as he says," said the Snake ; and he had his women heat some water.
When it was ready, one of them poured Hot water of it here and there on the captive's head and shoulders.
Wherever the hot water touched, the hair came out and the skin peeled off.
The pain was so bad that the Piegan nearly fainted.
When he revived, he said to his wife : " Pity me. I have suffered enough.
Let them kill me now. Let me hurry to join those who are already travelling to the Sand Hills."
The woman turned to the Snake chief, and said, " The man says that he wants you to give him to the Sun."
"It is good," said the Snake. "Tomorrow we move camp.
Before we leave here, we will give him to the Sun."
There was an old woman in this camp who lived all alone, in a little lodge of her own.
She had some friends and relations, but she said she liked to live by herself.
She had heard that a Piegan had been captured, and went to the lodge where he was.
When she saw them pour the boiling water on him, she cried and felt badly.
This old woman had a very good heart.
She went home and lay down by her dog, and kept crying, she felt so sorry for this poor man.
Pretty soon she heard people shouting out the orders of the chief.
They said : " Listen ! listen ! Tomorrow we move camp.
Get ready now and pack up everything. Before we go, the Piegan man will be given to the Sun."
Then the old woman knew what to do.
She tied a piece of buckskin around her dog's mouth, so he could not bark, and then she took him way out in the timber and tied him where he could not be seen.
She also filled a small sack with pemmican, dried meat, and berries, and put it near the dog.
In the morning the people rose early. They smoothed a cottonwood tree, by taking off the bark, and painted it black.
Then they stood the Piegan up against it, and fastened him there with a great many ropes. When they had tied him so he could not move, they painted his face black, and the chief Snake made a prayer, and gave him to the Sun.
Every one was now busy getting ready to move camp.
This old woman had lost her dog, and kept calling out for him and looking all around. " Tsis'-if" she cried. " Tsis'-if Come here.
Knock the dog on the head ! Wait till I find him, and I'll break his neck."
The people were now all packed up, and some had already started on the trail. "Don't wait for me," the old woman said.
"Go on, I'll look again for my dog, and catch up with you."
When all were gone, the old woman went and untied her dog, and then, going up to where the Piegan was tied, she cut the ropes, and he was free.
But already the man was very weak, and he fell down on the ground.
She rubbed his limbs, and pretty soon he felt better.
The old woman was so sorry for him that she cried again, and kissed him.
Then the man cried, too. He was so glad that some one pitied him.
By and by he ate some of the food the old woman had given him, and felt strong again.
He said to her in signs : " I am not done. I shall go back home now, but I will come again.
I will bring all the Piegans with me, and we will have revenge."
" You say well," signed the old woman.
" Help me," again said the man. " If, on the road you are travelling, this camp should separate, mark the trail my wife takes with a stick.
You, too, follow the party she goes with, and always put your lodge at the far end of the village.
When I return with my people, I will enter your lodge, and tell you what to do."
"I take your speech," repHed the old woman. "As you say, so it shall be."
Then she kissed him again, and started on after her people.
The man went to the river, swam across, and started for the North.
Why are the people crying? Why is all this mourning?
Ah ! the poor man has returned home, and told how those who went with him were killed. He has told them the whole story.
They are getting ready for war. Every one able to fight is going with this man back to the Snakes.
Only a few will be left to guard the camp. The mother of that bad woman is going, too.
She has sharpened her axe, and told what she will do when she sees her daughter.
All are ready. The best horses have been caught up and saddled, and the war party has started, hundreds and hundreds of warriors.
They are strung out over the prairie as far as you can see.
When they got to the Missouri River, the poor man showed them where the lodge in which they had tortured him had stood.
He took them to see the tree, where he had been bound.
The black paint was still on it.
From here, they went slowly. Some young men were sent far ahead to scout.
The second day, they came back to the main body, and said they had found a camping place just deserted, and that there the trail forked.
The poor man then went ahead, and at the forks he found a willow twig stuck in the ground, pointing to the left hand trail.
When the others came up, he said to them : " Take care of my horse now, and travel slowly. I will go ahead on foot and find the camp.
It must be close. I will go and see that old woman, and find out how things are."
Some men did not want him to do this ; they said that the old woman might tell about him, and then they could not surprise the camp.
" No," replied the man. " It will not be so. That old woman is almost the same as my mother. I know she will help us."
He went ahead carefully, and near sunset saw the camp. When it was dark, he crept near it and entered the old woman's lodge.
She had placed it behind, and a little way off from, the others.
When he went in the old woman was asleep, but the fire was still burning a little.
He touched her, and she jumped up and started to scream ; but he put his hand on her mouth, and when she saw who it was she laughed and kissed him.
"The Piegans have come," he told her. "We are going to have revenge on this camp tonight.
Is my wife here?"
" Still here," replied the old woman. "She is chief now.
They think her medicine very strong."
"Tell your friends and relations," said the Piegan, " that you have had a dream, and that they must move into the brush yonder.
Have them stay there with you, and they will not be hurt.
I am going now to get my people."
It was very late in the night. Most of the Snakes were in bed and asleep.
All at once the camp was surrounded with warriors, shouting the war cry and shooting, stabbing, and knocking people on the head as fast as they came out of the lodges.
That Piegan woman cried out : " Don't hurt me. I am a Piegan.
Are any of my people here ? "
" Many of your relations are here," some one said. " They will protect you."
Some young men seized and tied her, as her husband had said to do.
They had hard work to keep her mother from killing her.
''Hai yah/ " the old woman cried. "There is my Snake woman daughter.
Let me split her head open."
The fight was soon over.
The Piegans killed the people almost as fast as they came out of their lodges.
Some few escaped in the darkness.
When the fight was over, the young warriors gathered up a great pile of lodge poles and
brush, and set fire to it.
Then the poor man tore the dress off his bad wife, tied the scalp of her dead Snake man
around her neck, and told her to dance the scalp dance in the fire.
She cried and hung back, calling out for pity.
The people only laughed and pushed her into the fire.
She would run through it, and then those on the other side would push her back.
So they kept her running through the fire, until she fell down and died.
The old Snake woman had come out of the brush with her relations.
Because she had been so good, the Piegans gave her, and those with her, onehalf of all the horses and valuable things they had taken.
"Aj//" said the Piegan chief.
" That is all for you, because you helped this poor man. Tomorrow morning we start back North.
If your heart is that way, go too and live with us." So these Snakes joined the Piegans and lived with them until they died, and their children married with the Piegans, and at last they were no longer Snake people.
1 When the Hudson's Bay Company first established a fort at Edmonton,
a daughter of one of these Snakes married a white employee of the company,
named, in Blackfoot, 0-wai, Egg.

2023.05.27 22:31 maxsettings99 I can't function cognitively like a normal person, I have a lot of problems.

Cognitively I am not well, when it comes to using my brain I start to fail, I am neither math nor letters, nor very socially adept, nor analyzing, nor memorizing, nor paying attention, terrible in sports, dancing, and coordinated exercise It takes me a long time to think of a solution, logical reasoning is difficult for me, that's why intelligence tests give me low IQ, creativity is not my forte either, I have a limit when it comes to being creative, my only forte is manual things but not just anything I only work with metals and plastics, drilling holes, riveting, placing screws, bending edges, but designing something that I have never done is difficult for me, I always have to look for a design to base myself on, planning is not my thing either, I don't learn Like other people, I need practical experience, clear and concise instructions, video tutorials, but above all a lot of practice repeating and repeating is the only way to not get tired learning something, but I am limited to manual things, because if we are talking about a complex trade where there is too much theory it will not be possible to learn like this, I really tell you, that's why I never wanted to go to university or any short course.
