NCDOR mistake put us in tax debt
2023.05.25 23:22 throwaway1337y337 NCDOR mistake put us in tax debt
Recieved notice of unfiled taxes from 2016. Unfortunately did not read it as thoroughly as I should have and simply sent in my 2016 tax returns--however, upon inspecting the notice, they are claiming I owe tax debt from a job I didn't even start until 2019. Comparing the amount due to every w2 I have, none of the numbers even match and they're also claiming that they have yet to receive my 2016 paperwork that I sent 3 months ago. Got a notice today that my refund and my spouses were applied to this accrued debt--we only got married last year, and so as far as I can tell their return should not have been used for this but I may be mistaken. When I called to speak with them they were incredibly condescending and completely unhelpful.
If it helps, I have not ever owed taxes.
Sorry if this is confusing, please feel free to ask clarifying questions. I am at a complete loss on how to proceed, given that they won't accept they have clearly made a mistake.

2023.04.14 21:44 rgb_leds_are_love State Tax Returns
- They're due same time as Federal (04/18/2023), right?
- Can I use any courier (other than USPS) to mail in my documents? Do different couriers have different postal addresses assigned by NCDOR?
- Fuck it, do I stay safe and mail them in on Monday? This is my first time filing taxes in the US (I'm a foreign national).

2023.04.04 16:32 mrcat6 Help filing state tax as a former international student with no US bank account
Hello
I was an international student on scholarship in NC during the 2022 tax year. I owe 414 USD in state tax and the only option for payment via the NCDOR website is bank transfer or credit card.
I don't live in the US anymore and closed my bank account when I left. I tried to make payment via credit card (I would get reimbursed by my scholarship sponsor) but it seems my international card doesn't work. I think there is an issue withthe zip code as its mentioned it is required for validation but my country doesn't use zip codes.
Any ideas on how to proceed?

2023.02.02 20:16 ste1071d Dear North Carolina…
I don’t know what in the heck is going on in NC with messaging right now but…
PSLF IS NOT TAXED IN NORTH CAROLINA.
NC in particular seems to be generating a ton of misinfo about taxes and PSLF.
PSLF is under section 108(f)(1) of the tax code. NC conforms to this section as of 2019. The other types of student loan forgiveness made temporarily federally tax free in the American rescue plan are under 108(f)(5) - NC has not conformed to that section.
See page 3 footnote 8 of this publication from the NC dept of revenue to verify what I have written here.

2023.01.31 19:36 tolbs02 No more free rides? State senator ponders toll booths for I-95 in North Carolina
I kinda saw this coming. They are just widening 50 miles of the highway starting around north and south of Fayetteville area. They are probably pushing to try to get the Fayetteville bypass widened (Exit 41 to 55). SC tried this before and opposition arose, and it was later dropped. I was hoping for all-electronic tolling, not toll booths if anything. Just my cents of idea.
They have not given up trying to add tolls to I-95! Note: Paywalled article but can be bypassed with an extension. https://www.fayobserver.com/story/news/2023/01/31/senator-says-tolls-on-i-95-would-raise-money-for-repair-and-upgrades/69838297007/ Key Points
- About 53 miles of I-95’s 181 miles in North Carolina are being widened without tolls.
- Tolling could raise money to upgrade the whole length of I-95 in this state.
- There have been proposals since the late 1990s to put toll booths on I-95.
One of Fayetteville’s new lawmakers, state Sen. Tom McInnis, wants North Carolina to seriously consider converting Interstate 95 into a toll road to rapidly raise money to maintain, upgrade and modernize it.
“That’s certainly an issue that’s on the table,” McInnis said in an interview last week.
If there is a consensus in the legislature to convert I-95 into a turnpike, McInnis said, he expects a law to make that happen would be included in an omnibus transportation bill.
McInnis is a five-term Republican from Moore County who serves all of Moore and part of Cumberland County. Cumberland County was added to his Senate district as of Jan. 1 under Constitutionally mandated redistricting.
North Carolina has two turnpikes: The Triangle Expressway in the Raleigh-Durham area, and the Monroe Expressway in the Charlotte area.
A
study published in 2016%20.pdf) estimated that in 2022, tolling I-95 would have grossed $168 million, and in 2040, $928 million.
Why tolls for Interstate 95?
Tolls would capture revenue from I-95 drivers who fuel up in Virginia or South Carolina, McInnis said, and then drive across North Carolina without buying gasoline — and therefore, without paying the North Carolina gasoline tax.
“And we get no benefit. All we get is the detriment and the destruction to our road,” he said.
North Carolina’s gasoline tax is for transportation services, including road construction and maintenance. It rose on Jan. 1 from 38.5 cents per gallon to 40.5 cents. This is the
highest the motor fuels tax has ever been since it was enacted 102 years ago, according to the N.C. Department of Revenue.
The gasoline tax in both
Virginia and
South Carolina is 28 cents per gallon.
What is wrong with I-95?
“I-95’s a deathtrap,” McInnis said, with many vehicle crashes.
“It’s an old, dilapidated road. And it needs modernization,” he said. “And if it was totally modernized, it would take all the money that we generate in one year for the whole state to get it modernized from Virginia to South Carolina.”
Florida has toll roads, he said, and they are well-made.
“It’s wide. It’s safe. It has safe bridges,” McInnis said. “It has safe on-ramps and off-ramps. It’s modern. It’s pretty. Again: Main thing, it’s safe. And it’s well-maintained. There’s not potholes in the road. It’s to the most modern — to the most modern effect. And that’s what we’ve got to work towards. And that’s what is needed today.”
Won’t toll booths cause traffic jams?
North Carolina’s two toll roads do not use old-school toll booths to collect money from drivers. Instead, they use “open-road tolling” technology that eliminates the traffic backups that a toll booth would cause.
High-speed cameras capture pictures of license plates and a bill is mailed to vehicle owners.
Other drivers, to get a discount,
purchase electronic transponders to mount in their vehicles. Tolling equipment detects the transponders as the drivers pass tolling stations.
Back in 2017: Plan announced to widen part of I-95 without using tolls.
Isn’t I-95 being widened already in North Carolina? I've seen the construction
About 53 miles of I-95’s 181.36 miles in North Carolina are being widened from four lanes to eight lanes.
Since fall 2020, the state has been widening the highway from mile-marker 81 at the Interstate 40 interchange north of Benson to mile-marker 13 south of Lumberton. About 15 miles of the Benson to Lumberton stretch, in the Fayetteville-Eastover area, are not being widened.
The $1.7 billion series of projects is due to be finished in fall 2026, the Department of Transportation says. No more widening work is planned after that, said Transportation Department spokesman Andrew Barksdale.
It’s not enough, McInnis said.
“That’s just parts and pieces. That’s not from Virginia to South Carolina,” he said. “We’ve got bridges that are antiquated, narrow. Roads that are antiquated. You’ve got potholes in it big as the hood of your car.”
The road needs “a wholesale remake and a wholesale upfit from Virginia to South Carolina,” he said.
From 2018: Suddenly, I-95's future is looking a lot brighter with money to widen it. Hasn’t tolling been proposed before?
In the late 1990s, former state Sen. Larry Shaw of Fayetteville began pushing for I-95 to be tolled to pay for widening and modernization and he worked on this until he left office at the end of 2010.
But the idea was controversial. In 2012, the state’s congressmen, including those who represented the I-95 corridor, introduced federal legislation to block it. In the late 2010s, the state decided to use existing revenue sources and federal grants to pay for it.
McInnis sees that as a failed opportunity.
“Had we done it 25 years ago, you could then ride from Virginia to South Carolina, and it would look like Florida” with the wide, safe, modern highways that he saw there.

Kept getting this frustrating message. Tried for days, same message, and it wouldn’t go through. Finally figured out my state (NC) doesn’t accept Turbo Tax for E-filing yet. If you’re having the same problem, go to NCDOR.gov (or your states equivalent) and use one of their e-file accepted websites. I used FreeTaxesUSA and it finally went through. 2022.11.10 06:09 heelrat NC Income Tax Assessment
Does anyone know a good tax attorney/accountant who can help me handle multiple income tax assessment disputes? I came home tonight to several letters from the NCDOR stating I owed taxes from 2017 & 2018. Only problem is I didn’t live or work in NC during those times and paid my state income tax to GA. With all of the fees added in, it’s enough money where I don’t want to mess around and would prefer to hire someone to handle this for me.
Much appreciated

2022.10.19 16:12 Dude_With_A_Question What are people located in NC doing about the $10k-$20k forgiveness? (those pursuing PSLF)
I got an email this morning saying that by default, those with federal loans will be opted IN for the the $10-$20k Biden forgiveness plan.
Is the final word that those in
NC WILL be indeed be taxed?
If I'm going for PSLF is there any reason NOT to opt out? ($10k is a drop in the bucket of what I owe)
Thanks!

2022.09.09 17:05 caller-number-four Being charged sales tax for internet services in a state that doesn't levy tax on said services
I re-subscribed to AT&T fiber a few weeks ago and just got my first bill of $80.28.
The 28 cents being for tax.
AT&T is charging me sales tax when my state (NC) does not charge
tax.
I called up CS and asked about it. They flatly told me they couldn't assist with this and pointed me to a AT&T site to request exemption.
And to request exemption, they require certificates proving eligibility. Except, I can't get a certificate because, well, NC doesn't charge sales tax in the first place.
AT&T didn't charge me this tax before when I had it for 2 years and disconnected in March of this year.
Spectrum doesn't charge me this tax either.
Who would I need to reach out to to get this resolved if main-line CS can't help?

2022.09.02 16:25 StillaCentristin2021 North Carolina says it will tax Biden's student loan forgiveness, and 3 more states are likely to follow suit
- Student loan forgiveness is taxable income in North Carolina, the state's Department of Revenue confirmed.
- The Biden administration's student loan forgiveness plan is exempt from federal tax.
- The debt relief is triggering individual state taxes in North Carolina and Mississippi.
Student loan forgiveness will be considered taxable income in North Carolina, the state's Department of Revenue said on
Wednesday.
Although the Biden administration's student loan
forgiveness plan is exempt from federal tax, the debt relief is still triggering some individual state taxes.
In North Carolina, student loan relief is taxable because the state has not fully adopted a specific Section of the Internal Revenue Code. Congress used the provision — Section 108(f)(5) — to exempt forgiven student loans between 2015 and 2021 from tax as part of the
American Rescue Plan Act. More at the link at the top of this topic/post... "No good deed goes unpunished".... submitted by

2022.09.01 23:49 throwawaypaycheck1 Question about State Income Tax and PSLF in North Carolina
My wife is about 3 years out from PSLF forgiveness and chugging along. We were researching what taxes we might have to pay if and when her SL are forgiven and came across
these instructions for state income taxes in NC. Page 18 on the bottom left instructs filers to include forgiven loans as gross income. I've searched this sub and found that most users report MS and PA (possibly past tense) are the only states that require filers to pay state income taxes for PSLF given.
Anyone have any expertise or insight on this, ideally within NC? Thanks!

2022.08.26 00:54 Blondewitch666 Has the IRS contacted you?
So I did my taxes with my husband in April, I do them myself and have been for years. This year it said I was supposed to pay like $1k of state taxes which made no sense to me but I was like whatever I don't have a choice. Fast forward to now, I have been fighting with the the people on the IRS phone line about if I'm actually supposed to pay anything. They can't find my account (that I owe anything anywhere). I initially called in June because that's when my first actual payment was due and I never received a letter with my ID number to log in and pay my taxes? I really don't know what else to do and I don't want to get into serious trouble if I don't pay taxes I'm technically supposed too? If anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it, I'm posting in here in case anyone else has been going through the same thing.
Y'all I never said the IRS contacted me via phone, I called them. I also tried calling the NCDOR multiple times. I got 2 letters in the mail today from NC and PA so it's all been figured out, thanks.

2022.08.25 19:53 PossibilityOdd616 Wrongfully charged sales tax for years, resolution options?
Have been renting storage units from 1 specific facility in NC for almost 3 years, recently got units at other locations in NC and am not charged sales tax on the rent. I contacted the first facility and receive no response, just like the other times I was overcharged for months and I said something. The NCDOR says storage units are not taxable unless portable like a pod and he shouldn’t charge me sales tax for past couple years, however they won’t intervene. What is my best option? ~ $34 for almost 3 years is not a lot of money but nothing I like to throw away either, and overall with over 150 plus units and spaces, numerous others have been taxed to a substantial amount for the past few years as well.

2022.08.02 20:12 JusticiarIV Do I need a tax attorney for a North Caroline Department of Revenue Tax Assessment.
Hi Personal Finance. My question is simple, Do I need to retain a tax attorney given the following scenario?, or can this be resolved by simply calling NCDOR customer service and perhaps submitting a form?
I lived in North Carolina until November of 2020. I then moved to Pennsylvania and worked remotely from that time forward. However, my company did not update my state income tax withholding in a timely manner. I've since changed employers.
Long story short, when I filed 2021 taxes I saw that NC had withheld $577 of income tax. I self filed a tax return and mailed it to the state, form D-400 and Form D-400 Schedule PN, indicating that I was not a resident of the state in 2021 and should receive the $577 dollars that had ben withheld refunded.
Fast forward a few months, and yesterday I received a notice of tax assessment from the state, that in addition to the $577 that had ben withheld, I also allegedly owe over $5000 of income tax, plus penalties and interest.
I have already payed taxes on this income to the state of Pennsylvania. Any advice on next steps would be greatly appreciated.

2022.04.19 04:38 gluon713 Not sure if H&R block filed my return or not; what are my options with 1.5 hours left?
I met in person in the office for service a while ago, then paid for the service a week ago, and then signed and approved the return this morning. I received an email that said my tax preparer "is filing your return" but never heard an update on whether this went through. When I log in to my account on H&R Block's website or use H&R Block's "check your tax refund" tool, it says that nothing is found for my information.
I know there is no penalty if you are owed a refund, and while I will get a federal refund and state refund for one state, I owe North Carolina a few thousand. I'm a bit confused with the NCDOR website. Is there a way I can just manually file in case H&R block did not and pay what I owe online?
