2023.06.02 18:59 MastodonEast3420 autistic people are plants
hello fellow đąđąđ´âď¸âď¸đż
Nothing big, but still.
We had a class at school and one teacher started to talk about ASD as an example of people who are lonely. "Its someone who sits in their computer all day and doesnt really need social interactions, they don't want friends and are completely fine with their loneliness".
She backed her opinion up with " this information comes from studies, I also have a friend who works with autistic people".
I get she is stupid and I am even more stupid for focusing on this, but I want to let it out.
I feel sad that this is what my classmates hear, I guess some of them will apply this information into the image of what they consider autism.
This was a little difficult because she was talking about me having no friends, asking, while the whole class was listening, why I think it is like that and then the ASD example. Funny she was arguing they don't need friends while a social butterfly was right infront of her.
we later laughed with my occasional mate that she will give me signals next time đââď¸đââď¸đ

2023.06.02 17:28 trollthumper [Comics] I'm With Stupid: Marvel's Civil War
So,
we already discussed what DC was doing to match the tenor of the early years of the War on Terror: A grim, smarter-than-it-thinks miniseries full of gratuitous rape that was meant to take the shine off the Silver Age by showing the darker side of its greatest heroes. Marvel, on the other hand, was trying to find a way to capture the zeitgeist of a post-9/11 era of existential threats, constant government surveillance, and the idea that if you werenât with America, you were against it. A
Captain America storyline saw Cap wrestle with the very concept of Guantanamo Bay; like any story arc that involves Cap doubting whether America lives up to its ideals, this made certain conservatives pissy, to the point that bad movie cataloguer Michael Medved
wrote an entire article asking if Cap was a traitor.
Avengers Disassembled briefly saw the Avengers face down their demons, as the Scarlet Witch goes crazy (again) and starts killing team members, her reality manipulations causing fault lines to form among Marvelâs greatest superteam. But there hadnât yet been a storyline that would tie the entire Marvel Universe together with the burning question, âWhich side are you on?â
Yeah, itâs got nothing to do with the Sokovia Accords. Weâd be a lot better off if it did.
Part 1: Mark Millarâs March to the C-Word Content Warning: Sexual assault. None of this is germane to the topic of the drama, so feel free to skip ahead to Part 1.5 if you donât want to deal with this. Tl;dr: Mark Millar, the writer of the event, has a near pathological need to be a 3edgy5u contrarian. Every comics crossover is ultimately a chance for one creative in the stable to shine or falter. The editors pick a writer who has turned out dependable work and give them a chance to try to alter the status quo but good. And for
Civil War, Marvelâs EiC Joe Quesada decided the best person to lead the charge was
Ultimates writer Mark Millar.
But who is Millar? Well, we could say âedgelordâ and leave it at that, but weâre trying to dig deeper. Millar came up in comics alongside fellow Scot Grant Morrison, long before Morrison said
the only time they want to bump into Millar on the streets of Glasgow is while going at 100 miles per hour. This antipathy is alleged to have stemmed from Millar copping several ideas from Morrison that went into
Superman: Red Son. But after getting a start on
Superman Adventures and as a cowriter on parts of Morrisonâs
JLA run, Millar soon branched out to WildStorm, where he took over
The Authority from departing creatowritesex pest Warren Ellis.
The reason I bring up
Red Son (for those non-geeks, an alternative universe comic premised on âWhat if Supermanâs rocket had landed in Soviet Russia?â) is to frame a constant refrain about Mark Millar. He has good high-concept ideas⌠which often get trammeled up in an almost Pavlovian urge to shock, disturb, and/or titillate the reader. For instance, in
The Authority, Ellis had introduced Apollo and Midnighter, two close companions who just happened to share the rough power sets and demeanors of Superman and Batman, with a few tweaks. Then he revealed they were boyfriends, which was a pretty bold move for a late Nineties comic book full of widescreen action and lovingly-rendered eviscerations.
In Millarâs first arc on the title, centered on a villainous Jack Kirby clone sending out a team of baddies who totally arenât the Avengers, Apollo is subdued and is strongly implied to have been raped by someone whoâs not Captain America. Apollo gets revenge by destroying EvilCapâs spinal column with his laser vision, then leaving him to the tender mercies of Midnighter, who is strongly implied to have sodomized him with a jackhammer.
In case you canât tell, Millar loved him some rape. And it kept showing up in his creator-owned titles as well, all of which were basically written as Hollywood pitch docs.
Wanted asks the question, âWhat if the supervillains won and secretly ruled the world from behind the scenes?â Well, an Eminem clone would take the opportunity to step into his dead villainous dadâs shoes and commit a lot of rape (yeah, thereâs a reason the movie version replaced this with basically the Euthanatos from
Mage: the Ascension getting orders from a magic loom).
Chosen asks the question, âWhat if Jesus were born today?â Well, in a blatantly obvious twist, it turns out heâs actually the Antichrist, and part of his journey into realizing his evil nature involves being raped by all the demons of Hell.
Itâs not that Millar canât write innocent or restrained; he got started on the
Superman: the Animated Series comic spin-off, and some of his titles such as
Huck and
Starlight have been praised for being relatively wholesome (keep in mind
Huck is basically âWhat if Superman was Forrest Gump?â when I say ârelativelyâ). And, as mentioned above, his works are made for high-concept log lines. You might recognize some of his various pitch docs:
Kick-Ass,
The Secret Service (source for the
Kingsman movies), and, as mentioned above,
Wanted. Itâs just thereâs this unctuous contrarian streak to a lot of his titles, a tendency to focus on venality, grotesquerie, and sodomy, with an air of pop culture edge. This also leaked into his image outside of his writing, with comments like
âGames are for pedosâ and ventures like the creator-owned comics periodical
CLiNT (yes, the kerning is intentional). This streak continues to this day, as
The Magic Order, a title that emerged from his deal with Netflix, features a magical escapologist who, she feels it very important to tell the reader in a direct monologue,
escaped her own abortion. Bottom line, Millar has a sense of vision, but itâs betrayed at times by this reflexive desire to prove heâs smarter than the reader, to rub your face in the contradictions and make you a party to the artifice of it all. Usually with a dash of rape.
But at Marvel, Millar was riding the lightning of the Ultimate Universe. His
Ultimates title was drawing on the wide-screen action image of
JLA and
The Authority, creating the cinematic language that would come to define the MCU. The choice to fantasy cast Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is why we have Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. He also painted the Hulk as a cannibalistic monster, cemented Hank Pymâs reputation as a wifebeater, and gave us Captain America yelling âSurrender? Do you think this A on my head stands for France?â, so letâs just keep that in perspective.
But the Ultimate Universe was its own pocket universe. Millar was being tapped to write a story for Earth-616, the main Marvel Universe.
And he had a vision:
âI opted instead for making the superhero dilemma something a little different. People thought they were dangerous, but they did not want a ban. What they wanted was superheroes paid by the federal government like cops and open to the same kind of scrutiny. It was the perfect solution and nobody, as far as I'm aware, has done this before.â
Yeah. About that.
Part 1.5: What Has Come Before Ultimately, the crux of
Civil War is something that has been explored lightly in the past at Marvel: The idea that, instead of being unlicensed vigilantes who decide the best solution of societal issues is to beat up assholes in spandex, superheroes become licensed government officers that register their true identities with Uncle Sam and solve societal issues by beating up assholes in spandex. In Marvelâs history, it hasnât gone well. The reality of government liaisons to superhero bodies has ranged from Valerie Cooper, who worked with government mutant team X-Factor but still found herself backing the genocidal Sentinel program as a big âYeah, but what ifâŚ?â, to Henry Peter Gyrich, an inflamed obstructionist asshole who had to be held back from flipping a switch that would depower every superhuman individual on Earth. The idea of heroes themselves bristling against a government they disagreed with had a long history, as there was a period where Steve Rogers quit being Captain America, and the government had to find a replacement while he rode around on a motorcycle in
a surprisingly slutty costume. But the idea of registering with the government has usually ended up on the âNoâ side due to one big cohort at Marvel: Mutants.
Ever since the days of Chris Claremont, a general conceit of the Marvel Universe is that mutants are a stand-in for your minority group of choice. Hated and feared, born different and feeling alienated, painted as an existential menace and threat to the status quo. Of course, itâs long been pointed out that the metaphor breaks down on the general grounds that, say, gays canât shoot laser beams out of their eyes. I have my thoughts on that which I might share in the comments if someone pokes me hard enough, but itâs been general editorial consensus that people with powers, especially those of persecuted minorities, being compelled to share their true names, addresses, and natures with the federal government is a âThat trainâs never late!â move. Not only that, itâs a slippery slope. The classic X-Men story âDays of Future Pastâ is entirely premised on the idea that a government program of genocidal robots built to wipe out mutants will eventually run out of mutants⌠and then start turning on humans who could give birth to mutants, and then itâs Skynet all over again.
Another running meme in the Marvel Universe is that the X-Men usually exist in a Schrodingerâs cat situation with the rest of the superhero universe, both coexisting and in their own worlds. Yes, mutants have served on the Avengers, and yes, Thor intervened when the Morlocks were nearly wiped out in the sewers under New York. But Captain America, for all his proud statements of living up to Americaâs ideals, has a habit of missing the plot whenever the US government (or Canada, seat of all the Marvel Universeâs governmental evils - no, really) decides itâs Genocide OâClock. And when the mutant nation of Genosha was completely wiped out by said murder robots, the Avengers seemed to be all âNew phone who dis?â But when the two do intersect, thereâs usually support for the mutants. One story in
Fantastic Four had Reed Richards - Mr. Fantastic, stretchy man, greatest genius in the Marvel Universe, guy whoâs probably being cucked by a fish-man - get tapped by the US government to make a device that detects mutants and other people with powers. He does⌠and then uses it to show why the government probably doesnât want it, as it pings several members of Congress as having just enough genetic variation to qualify as âmutants,â even if they donât have powers.
All in all, while the argument has some merit, for years, Marvel has come down on the position that asking people with powers to reveal their identities to the federal government is something that could go really bad if somebody with a hate-on for superheroes ends up in power. Something that would never happen oh yeah it totally did. But before it all went to Hell,
Civil War at least gave an opportunity to reexamine the concept and see if it had merit.
It might have. But not with this argument.
Part 1.75: What Else Has Happened Before? And now, some things that will ultimately give context for what happens next:
- In the pages of Thor, all of Asgard eventually runs headlong into Ragnarok. Thor and the rest of the Asgardians give their lives to save the earth, taking Thor off the board⌠for now.
- As mentioned above, the Avengers experience a critical fault due to Wanda going batshit (a common lament). With Avengers Mansion destroyed and the team at odds, it is eventually reunited under Tony Stark, who put the Avengers up in a tower he built.
- Nick Fury has vanished due to doing some skullduggery in the pages of the miniseries Secret War (no, not Secret Wars, this is different). Acting head of SHIELD, the all-purpose super spy squad of Marvel, is Maria Hill, who canât seem to draw her pistol without shooting herself in the foot.
- Due to Wanda continuing to go batshit, the House of M crossover event ends with her casting a spell: âNo more mutants.â While the damage is staunched, Earth-616âs population of mutants (which was recently established to be somewhere around 16 million) is reduced to 200, the rest being depowered or dying as a result of being depowered. This was because, as Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said, the idea of mutants being everywhere made them âboring.â The fact that mutants were starting to be written less as a minority stand-in and more as an actual minority group with fashion, culture, music, and neighborhoods might have had something to do with that. From the wake of this event emerges Sally Floyd, a journalist whose own mutant daughter died before the mass depowering due to having a power that was more curse than blessing. The series Generation M follows her as the viewpoint character as she investigates the stories of former mutants.
Part 2: Connecticut Canât Catch a Break The big kick-off for
Civil War involves the New Warriors, a team of teen heroes who have, as of a recently canceled series, been trying to make it big as reality TV stars. They get in a fight with a bunch of villains in the small town of Stamford, CT, when exploding villain Nitro goes positively nuclear, resulting in a blast much bigger than any heâs generated. [1] Not only does this mostly wipe out the New Warriors (save for kinetic energy-absorbing goofball Speedball), but it also happens to hit a nearby school. In the end, 612 people are dead, many of them children, and the nation wants answers.
With public opinion turning against the New Warriors, former member Hindsight starts leaking secret identities to get the heat off his back. This only makes things worse. Secret identities have only recently stopped being a thing for some heroes: Captain America only came out a few years ago, it was only recently that Tony Stark stopped pretending Iron Man was his bodyguard, and Daredevil was almost outed in the pages of his book. But something needs to be done, so Tony helps work with Congress to pass the Super Human Registration Act, which requires that all people with powers or working as vigilantes register their identities with the government to receive training and oversight. If you donât? Believe it or not, jail, right away.
Fault lines quickly develop in the superhero community. While Tony is leading the âproâ side, alongside Reed Richards (yeah, weâll get to that), Captain America, usually painted as the embodiment of the dream of America despite its compromised history and many sins, is against it. Heâs lived through Richard Nixon being a secret fascist and shooting himself in the head after being fingered as mastermind of a vast criminal conspiracy (
yes, that happened ); he knows how badly this could go in the wrong hands. Needless to say, Maria Hill and SHIELD hear his concerns, understand his problems with it, and are willing to iron out the kinks through reasoned debate.
Just kidding. Before the law has even been signed, Maria sics SHIELDâs elite Cape-Killers squad on Cap with the intent of getting him behind bars. Cap swiftly goes underground and starts his own group of anti-registration superheroes.
The fight continues for the next few issues. Spider-Man, caught in the middle, reveals himself to be Peter Parker at a press conference, declaring his support for the SHRA. Doctor Strange is so powerful that he tells the government to fuck off, and somehow, Maria Hill doesnât decide to go charging up his asshole. Ben Grimm, the ever-loving blue-eyed Thing, is so sick of all the conflict he goes to France. But things are still at a stalemate, and while SHIELD may be acting like a bunch of merry assholes, it seems like thereâs a debate to be had that could still be resolved reasonably⌠except for one key factor.
Part 3: I Fought the Law, and the Law⌠Huh? No one ever really defined what the Super Human Registration Act, the legislation that tore the Marvel Universeâs superhero community asunder, did. Every book that had an issue that touched on the event seemed to have a different understanding of its principles, as well as just how fascist it might be in the long run. In the pages of
She-Hulk, attorney Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk argues the law is a net good, as it gives heroes the backing and resources they need to not have to go it alone, while also having some measure of government oversight. In the pages of
Civil War Frontline (oh, and weâll get
back to
Civil War Frontline, donât you worry), Wonder Man is told by the government that he needs to do a job for them, and if he refuses, well, one thousand years dungeon.
Which then leads into the
other issue behind the SHRA. Namely, that everyone in favor was either starting to swing towards fascism or embracing bootlicking as a lifestyle, not a kink. In the pages of
Amazing Spider-Man, Peter asks Reed Richards, who has always bucked authority and once stopped the US government from doing something just like this with mutants, why heâs pro-registration. Reed then reveals
that an uncle who has never been mentioned before was called before HUAC; he refused to name names, his career was ruined, and he killed himself. From this, Reed - the man who stole a rocketship because the government said ânoâ to his planned space voyage - has learned that the government is always right, especially when they could step on your neck (this was received so badly that a later comic revealed heâd actually borrowed the concept of psychohistory from Asimovâs
Foundation, heâd made it work somehow, and his calculations showed that this was the only way to avoid a greater disaster). This comic also revealed that people who were in violation of the SHRA were sent to a literal extradimensional Gitmo, a prison in the Negative Zone that later comics would reveal was overseen by⌠Captain Marvel. No, not that one. No, not
that one. The Kree superhero Captain Mar-Vell, who had famously died of cancer decades before. How did he come back from the dead? Fuck if we know.
This âthe law says what you want it to sayâ approach spread across various books and miniseries meant to cross over into the event. In the pages of a crossover mini between the Runaways and the Young Avengers, this meant SHIELD Cape-Killer squads were using lethal force against
teenagers. The second-to-last issue of the mini ends with several members of both teams in extradimensional Gitmo, about to be dissected by a guy whoâs horny for torture. The fact that all the captive heroes were the queer members of both teams? Total coincidence. Honestly.
So, it quickly becomes clear that the editorial control on this event is less than cohesive. There are different ideas all over as to what the SHRA does, and some of those ideas are tacking pretty fashy. But if the law is being painted as
that bad, then clearly, there must be some greater statement of freedom vs. security. Maybe Millarâs really painting a subversive picture of what happens when you trade liberty for control, right?
Part 4: Why Do You Hate the Good Thing? After the publication of
Civil War #3, Millar would say in an interview he was actually
pro-registration. I canât find that interview,
but hereâs a similar sentiment shared years later:
âWeirdly, some of the other writers would often make Tony the bad guy, which I thought was a strange choice because I was actually on Tonyâs side... In the real world, if somebody had superpowers, Iâd like them to be registered in the same way that somebody who has a gun has to carry a license. But a gun can kill several people while a superhero can kill several thousands of people, so on a pragmatic level Iâm 100% on Tonyâs side. Maybe on a romantic level, Capâs position makes sense but I donât think anybody in the real world would really want that."â
And again, hereâs the thing:
Heâs not entirely wrong. As said above, the idea of civil liberties for all and âfree to me you and meâ falls down a little when one of your neighbors can blow up a city block by thinking real hard. But Millar is fighting against years of ideological inertia in the Marvel Universe, as well as painting Captain America, the guy who has always embodied the ideal of a righteous, just America, as in the wrong. He needs to make one hell of an argument.
So hereâs what happens in the pages of
Civil War #3 to sell the audience on the SHRA:
- Thor comes back from the dead⌠and heâs on Tonyâs side! Well, not really. Tony and Reed both realized that having one of the most beloved gods of the Marvel Universe come out on their side would be a big win⌠if only he wasnât dead. So, they cloned him. Or rather, they T-800âd him, putting cloned divine flesh on a robot skeleton. But Iâm sure heâs perfectly under control, and - oh, he just killed Goliath. In the next issue, one of Marvelâs black male heroes, frozen at the size of a small townhouse in death, will be buried in a gigantic ditch, wrapped in a tarp and chains. Youâd think Hank Pym could grow a large enough coffin, at least.
- With Cap and the anti-registration side escaping once again, Tony decides he needs a dedicated team that can track down fugitive superhumans. To do so, he creates a new version of the Thunderbolts, a concept long associated with âvillains acting like heroes.â And who does he put on this team? Venom, the Spider-Man villain who eats peopleâs brains; Bullseye, the Daredevil villain who will kill anyone for the lulz; and Norman Osborn, a.k.a. The Green Goblin, who famously murdered Spider-Manâs girlfriend Gwen Stacy.
Again. Tonyâs in the
right. The SHRA is
good.
Part 5: Yadda, Yadda, Yadda The next few issues of
Civil War might best be described as âThey fight, and fight, and fight and fight and fight.â The anti-registration side picks up The Punisher, Marvelâs most avowed murderer of criminals - and Cap is somewhat shocked but not entirely surprised when two minor villains join the anti-registration side and Frank promptly kills them on sight. Spider-Man starts realizing things are weird on the pro-reg side and defects, after he has set his entire life on fire. The X-Men have continued to stay out of this whole mess. In the lead-up, Emma Frost called Tony out on the Avengersâ complete absence when Genosha got nuked. Later, Carol Danvers (then Ms. Marvel, now Captain Marvel) will show up at the Xavier School to pitch the SHRA just after a massive terrorist attack kills dozens of students. Emma responds by
telepathically dogwalking her.
By the final issue of the miniseries, the SHRA has expanded out into the Fifty States Initiative, wherein each state gets its own superteam. Thereâs a big final battle, Hercules kills Robo-Thor, and Cap nearly takes out Tony, only to be stopped by⌠the heroes of 9/11. No shit,
Captain America is subdued by cops, firefighters, and paramedics. And when that happens, Cap finally takes a look around, realizes their big ideological street brawl has resulted in collateral damage, and surrenders. The SHRA wins, though Tony feels a little bad about it. Cap is ready to stand trial and to argue that, while he may have done something wrong, he did it for the right reasons.
Once again: Yeah. About that.
Part 6: MySpace Tom Didnât Die For This Running alongside
Civil War is
Civil War Frontline, a street-level book written by Paul Jenkins that managed to capture this world-breaking conflict through the eyes of people on the street. Though it has side stories, its main leads are Ben Urich, Peter Parkerâs journalist buddy at The Daily Bugle, and the aforementioned Sally Floyd. Throughout the series, they start to realize thereâs a story underneath the SHRA, as if somebody is playing the angles.
Before we talk about that conclusion, letâs talk about a side story. Remember how we said part of the comics community saw
Identity Crisis as a driven effort to make things less âwackyâ and intentionally darken the DCU? Well, that same tonal approach led to one of the more laughable moments of a pretty laughable arc. See, despite the fact that, as established, it was Nitro who blew up Stamford, itâs Speedball, the only survivor of the New Warriors, that views himself as responsible and is held up as a scapegoat by the general public. In addition, the blast screwed up his powers. Now, he doesnât absorb and reflect kinetic energy; rather, he generates energy based on pain. So, he builds himself a new,
extreme outfit lined with 612 spikes, one for each person who died in Stamford. This will drive his crusade to make things right - not as SpeedballâŚ
but as Penance.
It was so laughably DeviantArt âOC do not stealâ that no one could take it seriously. Look what you did, you took a perfectly good goofball and gave him an emo streak. The turn is
swiftly mocked in other Marvel books, and itâs eventually revealed that Speedball still had his original powerset and always intended to put Nitro in the Goofy Suit of Dark Inner Torment as punishment for his crimes. But this turn gives you a sense of the tone and heft Jenkins was bringing to the proceedings.
Anyway, back to the main plot. Ben and Sally follow the thread as Namor, as he is wont to do, declares war on the surface world after an Atlantean diplomat is shot. But it turns out the assassination was arranged by Norman Osborn, who decided it was better to beg forgiveness than ask permission and manipulated Atlantis into war so that Tony could have another piece of evidence for getting superhumans on a leash. And the two journalists deduce that, on some level, Tony
had to know this would be an inevitable outcome of giving state backing to an unhinged mogul who dresses like a Power Rangers villain. Weighing what to do with this information, Ben and Sally, who are kind of sick of the collateral damage by this point, sit on it while they go in for an interview with Captain America, now in custody and willing to tell his side of the story.
And then. And
then. The
monologue. If you want a lesson in how to assassinate a character in 30 seconds or less, this monologue is a great example. Sally Floyd calls Captain America out as completely divorced from American values. Now, again, Captain America has long served as the beating liberal heart of the Marvel Universe. He has always represented an America that reckons with its legacy of things like internment camps, Manifest Destiny, and Jim Crow, in order to transcend these scars and embody the promise offered by Emma Lazarusâs
New Colossus, carved on the side of the Statue of Liberty. Why is he out of touch with Americans at the dawn of the 21st century?
Well, heâs never heard of MySpace. [2]
He doesnât watch NASCAR. He doesnât follow American Idol. There are pop culture moments that have aged like milk; this one had all the permanence of an ice cream cone in a blast furnace. But despite the inanity of Floydâs argument -
and trust me, there are fan edits dedicated to Cap pointing out how full of shit this argument is - itâs clear it represents something else. This is a post-9/11 world. Fuck civil liberties, we have a no-fly list and Gitmo, and if the American people
really cared, theyâd do something other than watch Simon Cowell read aspiring singers to filth. What does Captain America stand for in this moment of crisis?
Nothing. Because he just looks away from Sally Floyd. No doubt thinking, âOh my God this bitch.â But to underline the argument in question, Sally storms out of the interview, Ben in tow. She still has that information on Norman Osbornâs false flag operation⌠and while she and Ben confront Tony on everything that went down,
they decide the story should never see the light of day. Because they wouldnât dare jeopardize the SHRA, because security is more important than the truth.
Oh.
And then Cap gets shot. And dies. He totally dies (except he doesnât but weâll get to that). If ever there was an unintentional thesis statement for this event, running in the late stages of the Bush era, it would be this: âItâs better to trust that the powers that be who oversee the new America will keep you safe, even when they stage false flag operations, stick you in a gulag, and put their trust in monsters. All that civil liberty stuff was the old America. And the old America was hopeless. It wasnât even on MySpace.â
Epilogue: Consequences Keep Consequencing As you can tell from that last paragraph, a lot of the fan reception to
Civil War likely had a lot to do with the period. This was the Bush era, a time where you were for America or against it. We were in the shadow of the Patriot Act, Gitmo, and widespread wiretaps, paranoid about what civil liberty weâd be asked to put on the pyre next in the name of Freedom. A story all about the warm, clenching fist of government control that tells you to ignore the collateral damage⌠well, it wasnât great for the cultural moment.
The ideas of
Civil War arenât necessarily bad ones. I frame Cap as the liberal dream of what America could be, but there are good arguments to be made that America has
never been that and Cap is just copium for liberals. His most recent title,
Sentinel of Liberty, opens with Steve saying he
is out of touch with the average American - not because he doesnât watch NASCAR, but because heâs a WWII veteran who looks maybe 30 years old at most and whose best friends are all superheroes or spies. A narrative that has him on the wrong side of the issue and detonates his beliefs isnât
impossible, but it probably shouldnât be one where people who got powers due to a fluke of birth or a radiation accident are told by the government, âJoin with us or weâll send supervillains after you.â Hell, as the
Civil War movie proves, there is a way to tell a story about a superhero community torn in half by the idea of mandatory registration as government-controlled actors, and just why people would think that could be a bad idea (âHey, remember when a good chunk of our intelligence apparatus turned out to be Nazi stay behinds?â).
But in the context of the era, and coupled with the execution,
Civil War felt like a hard sell, and you could feel the thumb pressing on the scale every second while reading it. The moral center of the Marvel Universe is wrong, the winning side employs sadistic murderers and has an extradimensional Gitmo, and the writer is telling you that any sane individual would be on Team Green Goblin Employer.
So how did that all work out? WellâŚ
- With Cap seemingly dead, shot by his brainwashed love interest Sharon Carter as part of a plot by the Red Skull, Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier becomes the new Cap. Only it turns out Steve wasnât killed, but shot with a time bullet that Billy Pilgrims his ass. He eventually comes back.
- Thor comes back, finds out what Tony did, and beats his ass all the way across post-Katrina New Orleans (thank you to Powman_7 for the link).
- The Secret Invasion event happens next, which leads to Skrull infiltrators hitting everything (this is also the explanation for Captain Mar-Vellâs miraculous resurrection: He was a Skrull all along). With Tony caught with his pants down and Norman Osborn seeming to save the day, Norman - who has been losing his shit for some time - takes over the Initiative and forms his own fascist cabal, HAMMER. To try and stop Norman from learning everything on every hero ever, Tony goes on the run and actually starts deleting his own brain, which he then reassembles with a backup from before anyone even thought of the SHRA. The fact that getting rid of Tonyâs âOops I did a fascismâ period came out alongside Iron Man hitting theaters is a coincidence, Iâm sure.
As for Spider-Man? It might not shock you, but having a hero without the resources of Tony Stark out himself to the world carries liabilities. An assassin who tries to kill Peter instead hits Aunt May, and it appears sheâll die of her injuries. All this leads to
One More Day⌠and if you thought the fans hated
Civil War? Oh, BABY.
[1] This is eventually explored in the pages of
Wolverine, of all books, as Wolverine decides maybe somebody should track down the person who actually killed hundreds of children. Itâs revealed that Nitro was given power-boosting drugs by the CEO of Damage Control, Marvelâs designated âclean up after the super-battleâ corporation, as a way of generating business. In a sign of how little this matters, Wolverine tells Maria Hill to her face that the person responsible for a mass casualty event is the pawn of a powerful conspiracy,
and she basically says, âNot my problem.â Cobie Smulders must thank the gods that her Maria Hill is written as somebody with basic human decency.
[2] Hilariously, when Sally Floyd was brought back during Nick Spencerâs
Captain America run because no one had piled enough dung on her corpse, this line was retconned to her
asking him about Twitter. Given everything Elonâs been doing lately, weâll see if that ages just as poorly.

2023.06.02 14:45 Jeanniegold84 Obsession venting
Iâm quite embarrassed about this, and the anonymous internet is the perfect place to write my thoughts and see if anyone has any help or insight. I know people might poke fun, but Iâd really like some ideas of how I might be able to change.
Iâm obsessed with the weather. Iâm assuming this is obsessive behaviour.
I look at the weather forecast constantly. All day long. I live in a very weather unpredictable yet cloudy part of the world. Iâve known summers to be cloudy and drizzly, as well as hot and dry. Still, a two week cloudless sky (like we are having now) is very rare indeed. When this happens I get a terrible sick to my stomach feeling like I should be going to all the places Iâd love to see when itâs great weather. The countryside, the highlands, etc. But I canât as I am working and when I plan to go away in a month or so it will probably be back to normal and rainy. I constantly read about the wind direction and mention it to whomever Iâm with. The change of the seasons are exhausting as I constantly have to see how the weather is different. I talk about the weather all the time to my friends and family. I take screenshots of weather reports and keep them. I look at the images of weather reports I saved from years ago to compare. I look up weather of cities all around the world, I look up temperature records and facts all the time. I take photos of clouds and rain and the sun all day long. If I hear that a part of the county has a rainbow I get upset I missed it. We had the northern lights here recently and I didnât see them as I live down south. I felt sick. I take sick days off work when itâs nice weather so I can enjoy it, even though I feel like Iâm forcing myself to enjoy it. I usually end up going to the park. Im utterly obsessed and itâs making me unhappy. When itâs sunny outside I canât bare to be inside for longer than a few minutes.
I wish I could embrace a mantra that would make me accept that the weather isnât so important, but itâs all I can think about.

2023.06.02 09:57 ScarredOCE Estimated running costs for Audi A4 (B9) versus Mercedes C200 (W205)
Hey guys! Iâm currently on the penultimate year of my Pâs and have been driving an 09 corolla ever since I got my Lâs. The corolla has been fine. Itâs dependable but itâs also rather barebones/boring.
Iâve always wanted to own a Euro luxury sedan and have spent the last couple years saving up. Iâm currently looking into either a 2017 A4 (2.0 TFSI), or a 2016 C200. Theyâre roughly equal market value w/ roughly 70-80k kms on them.
Just wanted to know if anyone had any input pertaining to the running costs of these cars? Anything to look out for with particular engine variants?
Iâm also open to any discussion comparing the cars themselves. I really like the A4âs
digital dash & updated infotainment system⌠imo it makes the
equivalent C200 look very aged. However, I prefer the C200 in almost every other regard.
Just for the record: I get that P-platers have a rep for thrashing cars. I plan on driving sensibly. Also, Iâm asking about physical maintenance costs & not insurance costs, Iâve already worked out the latter.
Iâm aware this is a long post but I must admit that it is in part because I donât have anyone else to have these discussions with. My family/mates just see cars as transport from A-B. Haha
Thanks in advance!

2023.06.02 08:13 arquistar Lack of a Will
TLDR: Dad dies so stepmother gets everything. Lack of will very suspicious. What should I do?
Sorry, this is going to be long due to the backstory
Cast, names changed
- Carl: my dad
- Sarah: my dad's mother
- Abel: my dad's father
- Diane: my dad's stepmother
- Mary: my stepmother (dad's wife)
My father's side of the family has a generational problem of using inheritance and marriage laws in a way that benefits the few over the many. Carl, my dad, was a child of a broken home. His parents, Sarah and Abel, had 3 kids but Sarah couldn't stand Abel's alcoholism and cheating so she left him, taking the kids. Abel's parents were well connected and made sure that Abel wouldn't have to pay child support or alimony by hiding him and his funds (family farm, private businesses, and so on). As such Carl grew up without a good relationship to his dad.
Abel and his family continued to thrive financially and expand the farm to be very profitable and something that Abel's children could hope to inherit some day. This did not have a positive effect on Carl as a person, and he rebelled against making amends for monetary gain. But as the sole male heir of his generation he was given many chances to return and see the error of his ways as carrying on the family name meant a lot to Abel's family.
Eventually Carl made amends with Abel and his family (blood is thicker than water, or some such nonsense), met a woman, and had 2 sons. Me and my brother were the lifeline to carrying on the family name and were seen as the golden children. This among other reasons caused a rift between Carl and my mom. They divorced and went their separate ways with my mom getting sole custody of the kids.
Over the course of several decades I was estranged from Abel and Carl, so the details are sketchy but the broad strokes are easy to piece together. Abel and Carl both end up remarried. Abel marries Diane and Carl marries Mary. Abel gets diagnosed with terminal cancer and that lights the spark for me to reconnect with Carl and Abel. If reconnecting with that side of the family can bring some comfort to a dying old man, why wouldn't I?
After Abel passes away, Carl is livid. Carl's will has not been updated in 50-ish years and still names "his wife, Sarah" as the primary beneficiary. Carl confides in me that Diane has taken everything she could and given it away to friends and family (non-shared family members, children from previous marriages, brothers and sisters) including several guns. He tells me that when he passes away, everything is going to his sons (just me and my brother, he became infertile later in life). He's mad at Diane for taking advantage of a bad situation, but equally mad at Abel for not having the foresight to update his will.
Another decade or so passes while me and Carl try to stay in touch across several timezones. Him and Mary aren't entirely seeing eye to eye, but I don't think anything of it. Couples bicker on occasion. Then, 2 years ago, he suddenly passes away from a massive heart attack, he was in his 50's. While talking with Mary in the following months I broach the subject about how best to transport his guns back to my home state. She doesn't know what I'm talking about. So I press and tell her that he told me that it was his wish to see that me and my brother would inherit his firearms. She says that she doesn't know anything about all that, but with the current finances she'll have to think about it. I guess it didn't take much thinking because she took everything and what she hasn't spent has been dispersed to her 2 children from a previous marriage. That sucks, but so does life.
The curveball comes from a recent trip to Sarah's house and reconnecting with her. She's very forthcoming with me because she misses her son Carl dearly, I'm a spitting image of a young Carl, and she fucking hates Mary. Sarah spoke on the phone with Carl a lot over the years, she was his touchstone and they didn't keep secrets from each other. He was talking about leaving Mary because they were worlds away when it came to how, when, and where they would retire. City vs country, 5 years vs 15 years, North vs South, all of it. Sarah also talks about how Mary wanted to bury Carl in a plot near her parents, but she fought Mary on it. All Sarah had was the will Carl made 40 years prior when he became a Marine and it expressed his interests to be cremated and interred in Arlington. But Sarah won that battle and he's in Arlington now. Sarah also complained about how Mary keeps wanting to stop by Sarah's house to collect keepsakes that she thinks belonged to Carl.
Imagine that. Your son dies and his harpy of a wife wants to raid your house for his belongings.
Sarah also conveys that she thinks his lack of will and manner of death are very suspicious. Mary and Carl were home alone and he suddenly goes in to cardiac arrest. She calls 911 but also calls her good friend the Sergeant Major and her old boss the General (major political and judicial figures 1 and 2). The Sergeant Major arrives before the ambulance and even attends my father's service in Arlington. He was buried with honors as he spent a majority of his life in service to the Corps but was not active duty as he'd "retired" from service 15 years prior, but was still working with the Marines as a private contractor and consultant. His death apparently wasn't ruled suspicious so he was cremated.
I sent a request late last year to the county Mary and Carl lived in for a copy of his will as it should be public record if it was filed through probate, but there was no will filed. For relevance, they lived in North Carolina.
With him already cremated and his cremains buried, I doubt I'll find any closure when it comes to how exactly he died. What, if any, recourse do I have if my stepmother had my father killed to seize his assets?

2023.06.02 05:50 ThrowAway7s2 "Harold Berquist â Man of Iron" from the January 15, 1970 Door County Advocate
Harold Berquist â Man of Iron
By KETA STEEBS
Hjalmer Holand would have loved Harold Berquist. He is the stuff from which heroes are made. If Holand, that unforgettable chronicler of Door county events, were still alive this is the way he may have written the saga of Harold Berquist.
â ****
Harold Berquist, a 60 year old bachelor living in Baileys Harbor, eked out a meager living cutting wood in a densely forested area north of the village. On Wednesday last (Jan. 7) Berquist, working done as usual, had completed his day's chores and was on his way back to his humble cabin.'
On the way he stumbled against a tree stump and dislocated a knee. The blow forced him to the ground where he knelt on all fours. Time after time the stalwart woodsman tried to stand but the pain prohibited him from rising. In desperation be began crawling home through deep snow and in sub zero weather.
Night found him a mile from his cabin still crawling blindly towards safety. Knowing it would be useless to continue his painful journey in the dark, Berquist crawled into a fairly protected area and spent the night beating his hands against his face and rubbing the extremities of his body as vigorously as his waning strength would allow.
When daybreak at last made its hesitant appearance, the enfeebled sufferer again began his tortuous way home. He had a mile to go and by steadfastly crawling with only occasional stops to rest, arrived at his cabin shortly after noon on Thursday. Alas, the cabin was cold, his wood fire long extinguished and the temperature indoors was not much warmer, than that of the wilderness he had just left.
Berquist, still crawling, made his way to the woodpile and started a roaring fire before throwing himself exhausted on his bed. He then realized that his dislocated knee would have to be set. By bracing both feet under the footboard, lying flat on his back and jerking his injured leg as hard as he could he managed to get his kneecap back in place. This was Thursday.
Friday, he lay all aloneâmiles from civilization, miles from a telephone, miles from help of any kind. His feet were causing excruciating pain, his swollen knee ached unbearably and the poor man faced an uncertain and possibly short lived future.
Saturday was no better. His isolated cabin saw few visitors and even fewer snowplows. In desperation Berquist tried to relieve the pain in his frostbitten toes with homemade remediesâto no avail.
Then, at last, on Saturday evening a welcome bock sounded on the door. It was Berquist's nephew coming to pay his isolated uncle a visit. As soon as he became aware of the situation the young man immediately went for help. Snowplows gouged a road to the remote Berquist home wide enough to accommodate an ambulance. Stilled hands lifted the hardy old warrior to a stretcher and inside half-an-hour the suffering but still cheerful accident victim was in a warm hospital room.
"His toes were badly frostbitten but his overall condition was excellent. As a veteran he is eligible for admission to Wood hospital and in accordance with his request, his local doctor sent him there this week.
If anyone would like to write and congratulate him on his fortitude, courage and spirit address a card to Harold Berquist, Wood Hospital, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

2023.06.02 05:23 PlanesandWhisky Can we be real about the 2023 presidential election for a moment...
TLDR: I cannot be the only person who sees this.... Biden is too old and frail, a bit shady, and his VP is clueless and completely unqualified.... Trump is a criminal and also too old and unfit for office and totally corrupt.... Can we please please please get a couple of reasonable candidates to vote for... literally any regular ass American would be better.
Let's start out with my intention. I would love for this post to get 69 million 420 thousand upvotes... but seriously, I want as many people as possible to see this because the media is starting to make me feel like I am the only person who sees that this election cycle is nuts.
This Presidential election is looking to be a choice between two terrible options... I will outline all of my demographics followed by my thoughts and I would really like to hear some alternative opinions because as a regular ass voter, I see nothing but terrible options from the two parties and I am starting to feel like I am the only one who sees that the current political landscape is a total shit show.
Demographics: Ethnicity: Caucasian Gender: Male Age: 35 Occupation: Military Officer Education: BS (it was a bullshit degree but also a bachelor of science) Relationship: Married (divorced once but I deserved it. I was a total shithead the first time) ... happy to provide any other demographics but at the end of the day I am a regular American with a regular salary, a regular job, a regular everything else.
Biden Let me start off by admitting that I was wrong about this guy. I voted for him in the last election because I felt like President Trump was unstable as fuck and presidential policy should not be posted on social media or be based on how one man is feeling that particular day. Biden promised a lot, I didn't expect much from him, to be honest, but I had hoped that we would at least get a president who was able to fill the role at a basic level. I was not looking for Teddy Roosevelt or Abraham Lincoln. I was simply hoping for a President who would show up to work, have a reasonable foreign policy, who would put some pressure on the corporations and their CEOs making millions of dollars, and who would address the issues that the majority of Americans were dealing with like student loans, health care, unfair taxes, and loopholes that benefit the 1% and fuck the 99%. End of the day I was hoping that he would look out for the 99 and not the 1%. So far we have got some good and bad in terms of policy... he got us out of the war in the middle east even though that was completely fucked up... poor planning... total rush to failure. Thank God that more people were not killed or injured and God bless those service members who sacrificed all for this shitty plan, they were patriots and I am thankful every day that we have Americans like them willing to "stand the watch." He got some relief for parents who could use the help financially when times were tough during covid but he totally fucked it up when he fumbled the ball when it came to supporting the unions like the rail workers, amazon, etc, he fucked up student debt relief (we shouldn't ONLY forgive loans...we need to address the outrageous price tag on education in addition to the loans)... He appointed Mayer Pete who had one job as Transportation Secretary and totally fucked that up by prioritizing his image over actually dealing with airline travel (I am a pilot so a bit read in on this topic... he screwed the pooch on this one), trains, and the supply chain.... he also has been a bit short sided on Ukraine support.... (Ukraine deserves independence but there needs to be an explanation of what we are getting as taxpayers for our money... Please explain to me what the return on investment is for the billions we are spending. I do not have an issue with spending our tax dollars on helping make the world a better place but I need to know how my $50B+ is making a difference before you spend it.) Also his sons.... Beau was a naval officer who allegedly did a bunch of drugs.... should have been booted out of the military and Hunter absolutely took dirty money and it was all covered up. President Biden may not have been involved in any of that but at the end of the day, all of the sins of his sons were covered up for the benefit of their father.
Trump As a white male military officer, I thought I was definitely a Republican before this guy came into office. I mean come on, I was basically their prime demographic. At least that is what I was told my whole adult life. I was unsure when he was elected as I thought this was a publicity stunt. Then he put "Mad Dog" Mattis in office as the Sec Def and I thought "America, Fuck YEA!" he had a bunch of crazy ass tweets and I wrote most of them off because I trusted that General Mattis and the rest of the cabinet would keep the country on the right track. And then he fired Mattis. This was the point when I realized this dude is a sociopath who only cared about being "right". He gave no fucks about what the correct decision was... all he wanted was to be "right." The most respected military General since Colin Powel was fired/resigned from the office of Sec Def under President Trump.... This was shocking. But who knows what happened behind closed doors.... perhaps this was for the best. Then the election and Jan 06. And since then this dude has been the sorest loser I have ever seen. It has been 3 years and he is still talking about how the election was stolen and if you disagree with him he will blackmail you into agreeing with him or he will support your opposition candidate. Fuck this dude. That is not how democracy works..... I do not disagree with his foreign policy as a military officer... He made some solid decisions regarding China and his critique of NATO was not completely incorrect. He said things and made decisions that others were afraid to say and do and I was into it but he also said and did things that was I absolutely not into... if you want America's help then there has to be some benefit to the American taxpayer... if you want to fuck around and find out with OPEC and your pilot students shooting up an American Military Base... then enjoy fighting your wars with Iran on your own.... I full-heartedly believe that the American Tax Payer should see a return on investment for their taxes but President Trump seems to only actually give a shit about his own personal gain. Let's not be naive, his son-in-law totally got paid off by Mohammed bin Salman. He 100% had the support of the Putin regime. He gave himself and his buddies tax breaks that he did not afford the 99%. He said a lot of crazy shit. This guy is nuts and doesn't give two shits about the 99%. He will gladly give you a MAGA hat for your donation but when it comes to actual policy, he has shown that he will take your money, put some in his own pocket, some in the pockets of his friends, and then give you just a little bit back so that you feel like you got the good end of the deal.....The average American made much less than the 1%... he gave you some back in covid relief to make you forget that you were getting royally fucked.
I am not running for president but if I was this would be my platform... in other words, this would be the platform that I wish we could vote for!
- National policies
- Politicians are public servants - Elected officials are elected to serve the American public, not themselves. Stop being greedy!
- If you hold a political office, you are allowed to only buy the total US stock market index. -This would force politicians to be financially vested in the US economy and prevent them from insider trading with specific companies.... if you want to serve in public office you need to sacrifice some autonomy. No one should use political office to benefit themselves personally. You were elected to enrich the lives of your constituent, not your own personal net worth.
- Term Limits - Congress and Senate should not be allowed to serve more than 10 years.
- Lobbyists - Lobbyists serve a purpose or so am I told but they should not be allowed to contribute any money at all to any political agenda.... period. Nothing. They can voice their opinions like any other voter but that is it.
- There should be a public fund to pay for political campaigns. That fund should be standard for each candidate. They all get the same amount. I am not certain what the right move here is but it is not currently an equal playing field. Someone from the lowest rungs of the socioeconomic ladder against someone from the top run should have the same chance. The candidate with the policies that best represent the people they stand for should win.
- Abortion
- This is a state issue. Allow states to vote on their own policy..... if California wants to allow abortion then let them. If Georgia wants to ban abortion then let them... If you live in a state that does not share your personal beliefs on this then you are welcome to move and become a resident of another state that does share those same principles. There is no reason why every state needs to be the same. Some can be conservative, others can be liberal. Use your vote to voice your opinion in your individual state elections. This should not be a federal decision.
- Taxes
- Taxes should be fair - There is no logical reason why Warren Buffet or the rest of the 1% should pay less than 99%. - Close the tax loopholes that allow the wealthy to pay less taxes than the average American. A consumption tax is the most practical policy here although it does unfairly tax lower income until you begin to factor in luxury taxes. I am cognizant that there is not an easy solution to this issue but that does not mean it is impossible. Cap taxes for basic necessities like food, utilities, housing (Under $1M for 1st house), and vehicle (under $100k) at 0%. Elevate taxes for luxury items (houses over $1M, second homes, Vehicles over 100K, personal jets, restaurants, etc) to 25%, and everything else at a flat 10% sales tax. Adjust income taxes to reflect average incomes and tax the lowest 50% at 0-15%, tax the top 25% of income at 15-20%, and tax the top 25% at 20-25%. Capital gains tax remains the same as that is an equal playing field... you hold the stock for 365 days or more and only pay 15%....This may or may not be the best tax policy but at least it is considerate of those who need the tax relief most. The more you spend on nonessentials the more taxes you pay. I am definitely open to some conversation/deviation here but this is a hell of a lot more fair than what we currently have and a consumption tax also generates some tax income for travelers and illegal migrants who currently do not pay any taxes but often receive free or reduced healthcare over tax-paying Americans (looking at you California).
- Immigration
- This is a core tenant of our nation. We need an immigration policy that protects our citizens but also allows others to come to this country to contribute to our success. There is a tough balance here to navigate but not impossible. Let's fund the applicable departments and ensure they have highly qualified agents to sort those who would add value to our nation and those who would cause problems. We have the most robust intelligence apparatus in the world. I am sure that if we focus our attention on external threats instead of internal threats we could figure out who to recruit to our team and who to pass on, all while making our country more productive and safe.
- Education
- This is a big one... Our children are our future... and we are failing them! Parents get 4 years with their kids before they head off to start school. That is the last time that we get 100% of their attention before they start receiving input from other adults and peers. We are doing them a disservice by not recruiting the best and brightest to mold them into tomorrow's workforce. Teaching is like every other career field. If we paid teachers the same as we paid CEOs, athletes, celebrities, etc. We would get more applicants than we would know what to do with. We could then choose the best and brightest to spend 8 hours a day teaching our children to invent the next best thing.... Obviously, we cannot as a nation afford to pay every teacher $25M a year but you get the point. Let's make a starting salary for a teacher $100k and choose the best applicants to teach our children. Teachers should be the best of society and should be regarded as such.....
- Now let's talk about college. A college degree is overrated as fuck currently. A bachelor's degree from a state school should not cost you more than what you make for the first 5 years of working. There needs to be a cap on what colleges can charge. It's great that we are looking into student loan repayment and I absolutely think that we need to help even the scales there but first, we need to stop the bleeding. A college degree from a state school receiving federal funding should not cost a student more than $50k for a 4-year degree. If you want to go to a private school then you are all on your own but let's give everyone an option to go to school for a reasonable price. We should not have to spend our lives repaying a loan for education. This is only going to discourage young men and women from attending these storied institutions. It is criminal what these schools are charging.
- Healthcare
- First, let me start out by saying fuck all of these people at the top. I am looking at the corporate fat cats, the insurance companies, the Sacklers. Healthcare is out of control even worse than education. We need to put limits on what they can charge, limits on what medications cost, and very strong quality assurance in the FDA to make sure that these drug companies are not poisoning us. Healthcare should be a right, not a privilege. We all deserve quality healthcare. Make it happen POTUS.
- Equal Opportunity
- Everyone deserves equality of opportunity... not equality of result. We all deserve the ability to succeed but success should not be given just because of our race/gendeethnicity/sexual orientation/economic resources. I personally do not care what color you are, what gender you are, or what you like to do with your free time. I only care about what you contribute. Black, Brown, White, or any other color of the rainbow, gay, straight, or anything in between, none of it matters. All that does actually matter is results and we should all have the same opportunity to succeed regardless of the details because, at the end of the day, we are all people striving for a "more perfect union"!
- Defense
- Completely UNSATISFACTORY that the Pentagon cannot pass an audit. We talk about our defense spending like it's a badge of honor but there is no mention of the efficiency of our tax dollars. If we give the DOD $2T then we should know what our return on investment is! The budget should not increase for defense spending until the DOD can pass an audit. This is Ludacris! I see fraud, waste, and abuse daily but there is nothing that can be done about it. We do not need to spend millions of dollars on a base right next to another base because they are "historic." We do not neet do complete training exercises spending thousands of dollars per hour just to say that we have done the thing that we will never actually do in war. There is absolutely no reason we need to pay millions of dollars for program overruns just because have already contributed so much to that project. We need to hold the DOD and the defense contractors accountable and to be honest we need to account for every penny that is spent.... With that said, Veterans have sacrificed a lot and we owe it to them as a country to compensate them and ensure that they are taken care off after they have sacrificed their future for the good of the republic. Many of our veterans will live much shorter lives than their civilian counterparts due to their service and the least we can do is ensure that their sacrifice is noticed and compensated for. How much is a year of your life worth? Ask yourself that next time you think veterans shouldn't receive healthcare or disability after their service is complete.
- Conscription..... this one is going to be controversial so buckle up.... I think every VOTING American should be required to contribute to the nation as a whole. This does not necessarily mean military service although this is inside of my "defense" bullet. But think about it for just a moment. If you first two years out of high school you were required to contribute to the public good, either through military service or through social service. You could be a bus driver, firefighter, work for public parks, or for your county. There are infinite ways to serve your local community. You serve your community, draw a reasonable paycheck, learn a skill, and earn the right to vote. You are giving back to the society that you are a member of and getting a skill and a couple of years to mature before being sent off into the world on your own. We could tie education benefits to this in a similar fashion to the way the military does. If you give two years to public service then you get two years of state college paid for....If you decide that you absolutely do not want to contribute to your nation then that is fine, we will not arrest you or revoke your citizenship, you just will not be afforded the opportunity to have an opinion on policy as you have no skin in the game. You don't get to vote until you contribute.
- Foreign policy
- Russia - They are bullies.... We have been the world police since the end of WW2 and this needs to change. Every country needs to take some ownership of its own sovereignty, however, like the comics say "With great power, comes great responsibility." We, as the dominant world power, have an obligation to balance the scales. Russia needs to stop picking on the weak and if the weak cannot defend themselves then it is our obligation to assist them but that does not mean that we need to fight the battle for them. Ukraine has done a great job of standing up for itself but the rest of Europe needs to continue to provide support in this war if they care about the outcome. End of the day, Russia is a dying country and we only really need to wait them out. We should not buy their exports, we should not sell them our exports, and we should make it very clear that we will evaluate our relationship with any country that does not feel the same way we do.
- China - They WERE a rising power. China is doing its best to continue to the illusion that they are rising to the top but at the end of the day they do not have the internal infrastructure or resources to become the dominant world power. They would like the world to view them as pacifists but in reality, they are antagonists. Their actions within the "9-dash line" make it very clear what they want. They want security. Once they have that security then they want influence. But they cannot possibly hold that security or influence for very long if they continue to be opposed in their values to the USA and our allies. USA, Japan, and Australia alone pose a significant challenge to China's power for as long as we remain united. That does not even factor in the other allies that the US has in the region like the Philippines, or India who both pose significant defense challenges to CCP. Our policy towards China should be "Play nice or you don't get to play at all." This policy will be painful for us as we may have to pay more for some of our consumer goods but it will be even more painful for them if they do not play along. We hold all the cards for as long as we are willing to sacrifice just a little. The POTUS should just be honest with us and we will as a nation, will understand. "We will have to pay more for some things but in the long run the world will be better off because we held strong to our ideals and the world will be a more fair place."
- Ukraine - Happy to send them aid but that aid should have an audit. Let's make sure that the money and equipment we are sending them is going to the place we intend for it to be sent. Seems pretty reasonable to me.
- NATO - NATO is necessary until the remnants of the USSR are completely destroyed... but the other members of NATO need to hold up their end of the bargain and POTUS needs to hold Europe's feet to the fire until they pony up what they agreed to. End of the day the USA's sovereignty does not need NATO to exist to remain whole. We have all the resources we need and are well-defended. There is no need for us to defend them for the sake of trade anymore. NATO needs us more than we need them so if they would like to continue to receive the benefits of our alliance then they need to make it worth our while and it's POTUS's job to ensure that happens.
There are a lot of other policies that we can go through here and no POTUS is going to have all the answers (that's why he or she needs a strong cabinet). I hope that there is some discussion started here... but at the end of the day.... the two candidates that we are likely looking at are both unfit. We deserve some quality candidates and not the old crazy reality TV star and the Old washed-up politician with a terrible VP. Give me someone reasonable to vote for, please!

2023.06.02 05:18 dowagiacmichigan The Macomb-Oakland Divide.
This is something that has always fascinated me. Macomb and Oakland counties, the two most quintessential sprawling suburban counties of Metro Detroit, appear to be very alike. Both counties comprise of mostly low-density, single-family housing built post-war (though much of it was built from the 1950s-1970s), are almost entirely suburban, are growing in population, are about 75% white, and have similar average incomes and poverty rates (though Oakland is slightly richer than Macomb).
Though, they are actually quite different in a variety of ways:
- Politics. The most obvious difference between the two counties. While the two counties were relatively moderate decades ago (Macomb was swing, Oakland was slightly Dem leaning), they have become more polarized. Oakland has shifted farther to the left while Macomb is now a solidly Republican county.
- Education. Perhaps the most definitive difference between the two. In Oakland County, 51% of residents have a bachelor's degree or higher per latest Census, though only 25% of residents do in Macomb. Even in Macomb's wealthiest town, Washington Twp, full of sprawling McMansion developments, only 37% of residents have a bachelor's degree or higher. Compare this to the Southfield in Oakland County, often considered a lower-income town, where 39% of residents have a bachelors degree or higher. In Oakland County, most suburbs will have rates of 45-65%, while in Macomb, these rates are 15-35%.
- Extremes. Oakland County has some very wealthy towns (Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, Northville, etc) and very poor ones (Pontiac, Royal Oak Twp). Macomb County, while having some fairly upscale places like Washington Twp and Shelby, and blue-collar ones like Warren and Roseville/Eastpointe, does not have any towns on the extremes.
- Composition. Homes in Oakland County tend to have a much larger variety of styles and layouts, while Macomb County homes are much more similar in aesthetic, as many of them are brick ranches and split-levels. Additionally, Oakland County has plenty of downtown shopping areas (Royal Oak city, Ferndale, Birmingham, etc), while Macomb County has just one (Mount Clemens). Shopping and dining in Macomb County is much more relegated to stroads and strip malls.
- Cars. In Oakland County, there are plenty of foreign makes on the road (Honda, Toyota, Mazda, and some of the luxury ones like Land Rover and Mercedes), and not many pickup trucks. In Macomb County, nearly every car is an American make, and there are plenty of pickup trucks not being used for towing/farm work.
- Perception. Oakland County is often stereotyped as snobby, upper-class, and where all the action is, while Macomb is stereotyped as hillbilly, boring, and uncultured. This is still bearing in mind that the two counties are not that different socioeconomically, and that neighboring Livingston and Washtenaw counties are wealthier than Oakland, while Macomb is considerably wealthier than Wayne County. In Metro Detroit, there is a clear, de-facto sociocultural distinction between the two counties observed by their residents.
My question is, how did this divide come to be? Will these metrics eventually become more equal between the counties? If anything, the two counties almost seem to be growing more divided.

2023.06.02 04:46 Gameran Dexter Flux Presents: Sound-Off! - Part Three
We return from the commercial, a five-minute video that was just a still image of Dexter Flux.
Babaganoush: The following contest is scheduled for -
Crowd: ONE FALL!
Javier smiles at this response, and heâs clearly got confidence that heâs shook the rust off.
Babaganoush: ...And it is for the WiR Tag! Team! Championship!
Crowd: YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Babaganoush: Introducing first, the challengersâŚ
Shit, you judge me on my appearance⌠face value ennat⌠Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOO!
As âIngloriousâ plays, King Mustafa exits from behind the curtain with Eddie Skelter following closely. Mustafa has a suit - a blindingly light-blue Christian Dior one - on over his gear and he curses at the crowd, but Eddie, dressed in red sweats, just mean-mugs and gets up in the faces of a few front row spectators.
Mann: Look, I - I know why people hate these lads. I really do! Not blessed with great social graces and they get off on getting ill-gotten cash and hurting people. But they make for a tremendous team, both covering each otherâs flaws and fighting as more than the sum of their parts.
The two of them hop up on the ring apron and remove their outer gear - horrifyingly enough, they take off their pants to reveal their short tights - and point to their chests: Mustafa has a lion symbol on his blue gear, while Eddie has a rose symbol on his red gear.
Babaganoush: âŚFrom the United Kingdom, weighing in at a total of 445 pounds, they are King Mustafa and Eddie Skelter⌠TWO! SMOKING! BARRELS!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOO! / ENGLAND SUCKS! ENGLAND SUCKS! ENGLAND SUCKS!
Woodbridge: Theyâre right! They should say it! England DOES suck! Thatâs why guys like Brendan Byrne came here! Heâs a good boy and heâs smart!
Mann: Moving on, and Iâd like to apologize to our UK-based fans⌠as much respect as I have for 2SB, theyâve got their work cut out for them. Because here comesâŚ
Babaganoush: And now, introducing the titleholdersâŚ
There is the completely incongruous sound of a blast on a Viking war horn before the jazz classic
âCantaloupe Islandâ begins to play and champions Jim Baker and Dexter Flux come from behind the curtain together, belts around their waists. Baker has on a chainmail shirt, while Dexter is in a huge fur cloak, which doesnât even seem to be making them sweat. Their faces are painted with blue woad designs.
Crowd: YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! HORDE! HORDE! HORDE!
Flux: OC BABY!
Crowd: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! DEXTER! DEXTER! DEXTER!
Mann: The crowd in Dexter Fluxâs home region are giving him love.
Woodbridge: Theyâre wearing the belts! As it should be! Too much of this damn âIâll put it over my shoulderâ nonsense in wrestling these days.
Mann: And the rejuvenated Horde seems to be taking their name very seriously, judging by those outfits!
Woodbridge: What? Whatâs that mean?
Mann: Because of the barbarian type clothes -
Woodbridge: I still dunno what youâre talking about.
Mann: sigh I finally am starting to empathize with Allen Paisner.
On their way to the ring, Baker and Flux hand out a bunch of fist bumps; they take a brisk walk up the stairs, get their entrance gear off and hand it to Maurice Chondon for safekeeping, and Baker steps on the middle rope to help Flux in - Dexter is apparently adamant about starting.
Babaganoush: âŚfrom Orange County, CA -
Crowd: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Babaganoush: âŚand Cincinnati, OH, weighing in at a total of 425 pounds, they are the WiR Tag Team Champions - Jim Baker and Dexter Flux, THE HORDE!
Crowd: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Mann: Dexter Flux clearly going to be in the match first, and it looks like out of 2SB, Eddie Skelter wants to startâŚ
Referee Harry Undersach checks over the four competitors - everyone complies even though Mustafa calls him a âchi chi manâ - and signals for the match to begin!
DING DING DING! Skelter offers a lockup to Flux, which the champion accepts, doing his best to ignore King Mustafa pounding on the ringpost and goading him while making
rude English gestures at Baker from across the ring. The two wrestlers in the ring grapple - Skelter puts a facelock on Flux, goes to lock his right arm as well, but Flux gracefully gets out and tries to get a headlock on Skelter. Skelter has none of this and pushes Flux off, but Flux gets him down with an arm drag!
Crowd: YAAAAAAAAAY!
Mann: Both of these men are accomplished technical wrestlers. Skelter is obviously more a traditional mat wrestler, Flux is well-known for his high flying, but theyâre going to do more of feeling each other out like this, I think.
Skelter attempts to put a wrist hold on Flux while the two are both down, but Flux gets out of his grip and kips up, and Skelter gets into a crouch, rising slowly and deliberately with both his eyes fixed on Flux, who assumes
a readied stance but doesnât go to attack Skelter yet. They re-assume a lockup, seemingly out of mutual agreement - this time, Flux manages to snap off a headlock takeover, bringing Flux to the ground again! Instantly he tries for a jumping elbow drop but Skelter rolls out of the way, and Flux makes a smooth recovery, landing on both his hands and pushing back up.
Crowd: AWWWWWWWWWâŚ
Woodbridge: Both guys still actinâ wary. For now. Even Flux didnât commit too hard to that elbow drop. Woulda been cool to see him break Skelterâs nose like that, hah.
Mann: Be that as it may, I feel like this pace will pick up soon!
Mustafa shouts a little more while Baker looks on calmly but still at the ready. The two stare each other down, and Skelter decides to take the first swing, throwing a fast but vicious jab towards Fluxâs face. Flux, however, is able to dodge backwards and follow through with a forward jumping elbow! It hits Skelter square in the chest and he winces but SLAPS Flux right across the right cheek!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHHH! / BOOOOOOOOOO!
Woodbridge: The level of disrespect!
Mann: Itâs still a legal strike, Mark. And itâs a treasured part of Eddie Skelterâs arsenal.
Mustafa is obviously pleased at the pimp smack, while Jim Baker looks irate, and is about to gesture for Flux to come back to their corner and tag him in. But Baker thinks the better of it, letting Flux avenge the insult himself instead. This he does, with a nice uppercut to Skelterâs jaw, but even as the Brit reels, before Flux can hit a follow-up attack, Skelter ducks behind him and grabs at his arm, a hold which Flux spins out of. But Skelter isnât unprepared for this and knees Flux in the gut! He brings a chop down towards Fluxâs head as Flux doubles over, but Flux is able to block it - Skelter then locks Fluxâs arm and attempts to drop Flux with a Russian legsweep - Flux dodges and goes behind but Skelter turns around in time and throws a hard left-handed punch which Flux counters with an elbow, and both menâs strikes connect! They both stagger!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Woodbridge: Both of âem have their fire up! Kill him, Flux!
Mann: No easy task! Now itâs going to be a question of which man is forced to tag out first!
Itâs Skelter who gets his head clear first and dives in for a double-leg takedown, which Flux blocks by splitting his legs - Skelter goes under and uses the leverage to attempt to lift Flux onto his shoulders - but Flux is ready for it! He clamps his legs and THROWS skelter with a
modified headscissor takedown!
Crowd: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Woodbridge: That tijeras came straight from Guadalajara!
Mann: And now both competitors are on the mat!
Skelter sits up and winces and Flux scrambles to take advantage, but Skelter grabs his ankle and flips him to the mat with an ankle pick! Suddenly both men get about the same idea at the same time - Skelter takes further hold of Fluxâs ankle but Flux tries to grapevine one of Skelterâs legs! They battle for a hold on the mat!
Crowd: LETâS GO DEXTER LETâS GO!
clap clap LETâS GO DEXTER LETâS GO!
clap clap Meanwhile, dark gray clouds are gathering in the sky above the ring. The venue turns on some extra lights for better visibility.
Woodbridge: Weâre onto Indian leg wrestling now!
Mann: That, and it looks like rain.
Woodbridge: You think the Tongva Indians ever used leg wrestling to do a rain dance?
Mann: âŚI do not think the one thing has to do with the other. Anyhow, the battle in the ringâs been VERY evenly matched so far.
Whilst Skelter goes for a modified figure-four leglock, Flux has something else in mind. He suddenly grips both of Skelterâs ankles,
bridges onto his neck, and surprises Skelter by forcing him into a pin!
Woodbridge: DAMN!
Mann: Whoa, a flash pin attempt!
ONE! TWO! NO! Crowd: AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWâŚ
The pin catches Skelter off guard but itâs clearly not enough. Both men spring to their feet and Skelter tries another double leg takedown attempt which is fended off by a flurry of overhead elbows by Flux! Skelter holds his head and decides heâs had enough for now, backing into his corner and tagging in the furiously waving hand of King Mustafa.
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Mann: His partner Eddie Skelter may have started off, but the big man of Two Smoking Barrels has wanted in all match so far.
Mustafa leaps in the ring and curses at the crowd once more.
Woodbridge: Dexter Flux is standing firm!
Mann: He did well against Skelter, who was his equal in terms of physical strength, but I have a feeling King Mustafaâs going to absolutely overpower him now!
Mustafa steps right up to Flux and proceeds to slap him in the left cheek!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Mann: The cycle of disrespect is completed by Skelterâs teammate!
Flux backs off, before returning back in for a lockup with Mustafa, who uses his size advantage to throw Flux back into his corner, where he tags Skelter back in, and the two
stomp Flux down into the corner. Skelter then immediately tags back out to King Mustafa.
Woodbridge: I canât judge. Literally canât. Used that tag team tactic there too many times to count.
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOO
King Mustafa once again overpowers Flux, using her superior size to launch him into the hard camera turnbuckle. He attempts to charge in, but Flux skitters out of the way! Flux tries to bring down King Mustafa with a kick to the knee, but he doesnât budge. King Mustafa blocks an attempt at a strike, and throws Flux by the arm off the ropes! As Flux careens towards the opposite end, Baker sticks out his hand, and smacks Flux on the shoulder!
Woodbridge: Thatâs a legal tag!
Flux baseball slides underneath King Mustafa, who is unaware the tag has been made, while Baker comes in and pearl harbors him! Baker takes control with an overhand right, a blow to the chest, and a Russian leg sweep, before attempting a body slam, which King Mustafa is too large for. Mustafa offers Baker a test of strength, but before Baker can even accept, he kicks him in the gut.
Crowd: BOOOOOO
Mustafa scoops Baker up with ease, and delivers a
gorilla press slam, taking a moment to flex for the unappreciative crowd before continuing his assault. Mustafa wrenches the arm of Baker, before tagging Skelter back in. Skelter climbs up to Bretâs Rope, and while Mustafa wrenches the arm, Skelter dives off, and delivers a double axe handle to the trapped arm!
Mann: Some solid teamwork here by The Barrels!
Skelter puts the larger Baker on the mat with a clubbing blow to the back, before delivering a fist drop to the skull. Skelter, relishing his small victory, backs off the ropes and prepares an elbow drop, but Baker rolls out of the way, and tags Flux back in! Flux charges in once again to meet Skelter⌠and is caught instantly with an arm drag. Skelter brings him down to the mat, and applies a sleeper holdâŚ
Crowd: BOOOOO
But Baker charges back into the ring, and breaks it up! King Mustafa enters the ring to try and chase Baker off, drilling Flux with a shoulder tackle as soon as he lands on his feet with a kip-up, planting him back on the ground. Mustafa returns to his corner, while Skelter ascends a turnbuckle!
Mann: Not something weâre used to seeing! Skelter wants to beat Flux at his own game!
Skelter dives off the top,
attempting a flying forearm⌠and falls short. As he tries to get back to his feet, Flux batters him with a closed fist, before whipping him off the far ropes, but Skelter is able to turn it around. Flux attempts a sunset flip to regain control, but Skelter simply pops down and pokes him in the eye.
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
While Skelter is told off by the official, King Mustafa sneaks into the ring to deliver a stomp to Flux, before skittering back to the apron. Skelter picks up Flux, to deliver a forearm, before walk-dragging Flux over to the corner by his hair, and tagging Mustafa back in. Skelter holds Flux by the hair, and Mustafa stomps his boot before delivering a knee to the stomach as Skelter heads back to the apron. Mustafa whips Flux, and as he returns, scoops him up for a powerslam, before rising to his feet, walking to the ropes, and preparing a knee drop, which Flux avoids! Flux crawls on his knees over to the corner before Mustafa can catch him, and tags Baker back in! Flux takes position on the apron, one foot on the second turnbuckle.
Finally, the sky has opened up! It begins to rain on the ring, the crowd, and even the announcers!
Mann: Didnât I say it was going to rain?
Woodbridge: Itâs not bothering anybody one bit!
Crowd: YEEEAAAHHHHHH
Baker charges in, delivering a pair of punches to try and slow down Mustafa, but they fail to knock him off his feet. Baker tries charging in for a clothesline, Mustafa ducks, but as Baker approaches, he attempts a
sunset flip!
Crowd: A-LO-HA KING! A-LO-HA KING!
Mann: Uncharacteristic offense from Baker!
Woodbridge: Iâll say! Bakerâs a great power guy, but I didnât think heâd even ever seen one of those!
Mustafa refuses to go down, but as he struggles, Flux suddenly leaps from the apron to the top turnbuckle, before flying in with a dropkick! Mustafa stumbles, and Baker pulls him down for the rollup!
Woodbridge: Oh shit!
Mann: Huge missile dropkick, and the matâs slick with rain now! Mustafa had to go down!
ONE TWO THR- Skelter breaks up the pin! Skelter then grabs Flux by the hair again, and darts him shoulder-first into his own ringpost. He bends the aching Flux backwards and
grabs his neck for a dragon sleeperâŚ
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! / GO FLUX GO!
Mann: He wonât be able to submit Flux unless Mustafa gets tagged out!
Woodbridge: I donât think he wants to! This is gonna be Lack ofâŚ
Skelter twists Flux around and fires off a
fat open-palm thrust to Fluxâs throat, making Flux sputter and drop to his knees!
Woodbridge: TRUST! Nasty!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Mustafa, who has recovered from the takedown, then proceeds to deliver an elbow to Fluxâs crown! The two work over their opponents in the corners- Skelter attempting to ground Flux with kicks to the knee, Mustafa using his large arms to deliver repeated clotheslines, and with Flux and Baker tied up in opposite corners, Two Smoking Barrels attempt to whip their Horde counterparts into each other! As the two partners head on a collision course, Baker suddenly drops down, in back-body drop position to Flux, who lands on his feet!
Crowd: YEEAAAHHHH
Flux continues his momentum by delivering a running knee to King Mustafa, who is in his corner, before charging back a Baker, who offers a hand, and gives Flux a launching pad to deliver a flying forearm to Skelter! Skelter flops out of the corner, and out of the ring, and with the support of Knottâs Berry Farm behind him, Flux charges, and flies through the ropes with a dive that takes out both men!
A few members of the crowd begin to open up umbrellas, including the fan who got The Milkmanâs earlier Baker approaches Mustafa in the corner, and attempts to lift him to the second rope, but gets met with a boot for his troubles. Mustafa trades places with Baker, and pops him in the jaw, before delivering another one to the ribs, and a third to the temple. Baker blocks a fourth attempt, and turns it around on Mustafa! Baker unloads with a series of right hands of his own! Mustafa powers Baker out of the corner, and throws him to the opposite. Mustafa charges in, but as he tries to charge in, Baker moves out of the way, and attempts another rollup! This time heâs able to get Skelter off balance!
ONE TWO Kickout!
Flux ascends from the grass to the apron, and Baker tags him in! Baker attempts to lift Skelter once again, but struggles to, as he breaks free, but Flux delivers a dropkick, and Mustafa stumbles into Bakerâs arms, who lifts him for a scoop slam!
Crowd: YEEEAAAHHHHH
Mann: He did it! He slammed him!
Woodbridge: This is where Baker shines! Not only displaying his power, but being great in the clutch!
Skelter tries to get in the ring again, but Flux meets him with a superkick! Skelter tries to keep his balance, but slips on the wet Apron and drops to the grass! Flux grabs the arm, and tags Baker back in, who delivers a clothesline to the trapped Mustafa, dropping him again. Flux gets the tag back in, and ascends the ropesâŚ
And delivers
Quantum Flux! He blasts down onto the King, into a puddle of rainwater forming in the center of the ring!
Woodbridge: QUANTUM FLUX! QUANTUM FLUX! DEXTER SEIZES THE MOMENT! MAN HAS FOLLOWTHROUGH!
Skelter tries to scramble back to the ring to make the save, Baker meets him, and holds him down! Flux scrambles into the cover!
ONE TWO THREE DING DING DING Crowd: YYEEEEAAAHHHHHH
Mann: And The Horde are victorious!
Woodbridge: And damn do they deserve it!
Babaganoush: Your winners and STILL WiR Tag Team Champions, at a time of twelve minutes and forty-three seconds, The Horde!
Flux and Baker hug it out in the ring, holding their tag belts high. Tony âThe Milkmanâ Stevens emerges from the back, knee wrapped in medical tape and casts, limps to the ring, and raises the hands of his stablemates! Everyone is going crazy, especially because the hometown boy defended the stableâs belts by getting the pin!
Flux and Baker each get up on a turnbuckle, holding their tag belts up high, while in the ring, Stevens stands alone in the middle, one leg down, hair slicking back over his face from rain.
Mann: Fans at home, this has been Sound Off! The weather outside has turned frightful, but this show has been delightful! I have been Shay D. Mann filling in for Allen Paisner, alongside Mark Woodbridge. Take us home, Woodbridge!
Woodbridge: I finally feel confident in saying this - it has felt like a wonderful, shine-drunk dream so far - but folks, we are so fucking back. For all of the incredible fighters in WiR, for our whole staff and crew, and for my short-term broadcast partner Shay D. Mann, this has been Sound Off, and I have been Mark Woodbridge - gooooood night everybody!

2023.06.02 02:38 ATTAKcATHRAK April and May 2023 watchlist

Probably wrote too much. The Eurocrypt(s) of Christopher Lee: Like many classic horror fans, Christopher Lee is one of my favorite actors. However, I wasnât especially looking forward to these sets, since I thought they would just be offcuts that Severin couldnât unload as single releases. Iâm pleased to say I was wrong. There are a few misfires among them (Challenge the Devil, Mask of Murder, Secret of the Red Orchid), then some mediocre ones (Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace, Castle of the Living Dead), but finally some really enjoyable films. Crypt of the Vampire and The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (the latter in lurid color) are genuinely creepy and eerie, with looming gothic shadows and ruined castles. Dark Places has a kind of standard âman descends into madnessâ plot but a fantastic cast including Lee, Joan Collins, Herbert Lom, and Robert Hardy. Murder Story really surprised me! It features a couple of teenagers who befriend Lee (as a writer) and uncover a vast conspiracy while doing research for a novel. The dynamic between Lee and the kids is fun, and although the plot doesnât really come together, the characters are strong enough to carry it. Finally, Dracula and Son, which I was truly dreading - a French comedy about Dracula and his rebellious kidâs wacky hijinks, with that cover ( https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71yHrbovNIL._RI_.jpg)? But it turned out to be very enjoyable, not quite laugh-out-loud funny, but quirky and charming. Again, the characters make it. Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection: Whatâs to say about this one? Adamsonâs approach to making films (if you make a stinker, reshoot, recut, and rerelease until you like it) and his entire life (murdered and buried under his floor by a live-in contractor who seemed to be assuming his identity) are fascinating. Even when he makes a kidsâ movie itâs bizarre, idiosyncratic, and mesmerizing. Al did it all - sci-fi zombie mashups, go-go crime capers, blaxsploitation, sexsploitation, historical sexploitation, regular exploitation, borderline pornos, sci-fi sex musical epics, rape-and-revenge, stupid comedies, kung fu, teen movies, family movies, fantasies, and more Iâm probably forgetting. To anyone who has the cash on hand to get a copy now that itâs OOP, please do and donât blame me if you hate it. Youâll probably make your money back if you sell. Favorites of mine include Psycho a Go-Go, Angelsâ Wild Women, Dracula vs. Frankenstein (which I remember renting from Blockbuster at maybe 8 years of age), The Dynamite Brothers, Uncle Tomâs Cabin, Black Samurai, Cinderella 2000, and Nurse Sherri. Also be sure to check out the documentary that comes with it. Itâs film school in a box! Bill Rebane: This filmography was something of a disappointment coming off the Al Adamson set. If youâre going to confine all your characters to a very limited location where nothing happens, youâd better make sure you have an interesting script. And none of these do. Also pretty disappointed in the image quality of the box set. Maybe itâs just a coincidence that The Giant Spider Invasion (the only Rebane film I have not part of the box) was the highest quality and the rest just happened to have no better source materials available, but I donât know. The Giant Spider Invasion was also the best of his movies that Iâve seen, because it seemed to be the most passionate (and had that badass actual giant spider model). The documentary on the Arrow set was not great either. Made during the height of the pandemic, everyone was on Zoom and Rebane himself was only in it for about 5 seconds. However, it led me to his Twitter ( https://twitter.com/billrebane?lang=en) and website ( https://billrebane.com/), which are a trip. Bloody Terror: The Shocking Cinema of Norman J. Warren, 1976-1987: The last director-centric box set I watched recently, and one I already had some experience with. Satanâs Slave was featured on one of those 50-movie Mill Creek sets that I picked up when I was younger and watched before I should have. Satanâs Slave is genuinely well-made in my opinion, with a creepy setting, plenty of twists and turns, and enough gore to keep me interested. Prey is also awesome, despite being mostly uneventful. Itâs very pleasant for being a film about an alien who comes to each to find a new source of food. Then we get to Terror and Inseminoid, both of which are awful, the latter being one of the most boring Alien ripoffs Iâve ever seen. But Warren brings it home with Bloody New Year, which is completely bonkers and a lot of fun. Night Gallery Season 1: Maybe I was expecting too much from this. The TV movie that acts as a pilot for the series is excellent, perhaps because each segment seems like it could have been a Twilight Zone episode. Most of the rest of the season is⌠fine? A couple of better stories and a couple of worse ones scattered throughout. At the very least they all have good casts. However, the first segment of the last episode, âTheyâre Tearing Down Tim Rileyâs Barâ, made up for the blahness of the rest of it. Itâs one of those quintessential Rod Serling scripts about lost innocence and the nostalgia of youth that really crush me, a lot like the TZ episodes A Stop at Willoughby and Walking Distance. I donât plan to watch it again soon, yet I canât speak highly enough about it. Exorcist II and III: Whoâs the real Exorcist II; The Heretic? Itâs me. I didnât think the second movie was nearly as bad as its reputation - especially the sequences in Africa, which I found to be pretty eerie and dreamlike. The story doesnât make much sense, but thatâs OK with me. And here comes the real heretical opinion - the third one is better than the first, which Iâve always appreciated but never been a huge fan of. The Exorcist III has a clinical coldness that draws me to it, and I really enjoyed the relationship (though I wish it was longer) between Kinderman and Father Dyer. Iâve heard about the studio fiddling with the ending for the theatrical cut, but honestly itâs a good thing they did, as the original is incredibly anticlimactic. Deadly Prey: âWho am I? A little man who's spent 27 years of his life as a cop trying to put big shots like you away. 27 years in the filth and the dirt of the streets, and there ain't no music down there. You watch the people on the streets, killing, raping each other, pumping dope through their veins, while big men like you sit in the fancy penthouses. And yet the poor slobs rot in hell. I know about you. As long as it puts money in your pocket. Today the nobodies who made you rich are gonna win. Die, you son of a bitch.â Foes: This was a real hidden gem. I stumbled across it on the recommendation page for another movie on RateYourMusic, and the poster immediately fascinated me. I looked up the Blu-ray release and discovered it was out of print. Then only a week later I found a copy at The Archive for a great price and watched it right away. Iâm glad I did. Itâs perfect late-night viewing, hallucinatory and dreamlike. Iâm going to guess the script was probably around 5 pages. If you like movies where nothing really happens and lots of ambience washes over you, seek this out, but be sure to watch the 72-minute directorâs cut. The longer studio-assembled version is awful. Death Wishes: The first one is something of a classic, and itâs easy to see why it resonated with audiences as crime exploded in the 70s. It tries to play a ridiculous premise and execution as straight as possible, which hurts, especially in comparison to the Cannon-produced sequels and ripoffs that followed. Vigilantism and capital punishment without trial are heavy subjects, and Bronson, who canât express convincing emotion, is not a good fit. I didnât dislike the first one since I love all movies about 70s NYC, but it wasnât great. The second one is a rehash with an updated setting and terrible score by Jimmy Page. The third is where it gets great, finally embracing the innate ridiculousness of the premise and taking it to new heights, backed by a great cast and a simple but effective script. Donât remember the fourth one except itâs an inferior retread of the third. Serpico: Another 70s NYC crime movie! This one is great. Though never to the magnitude of Frank Serpico, Iâve been stuck in seemingly similar situations before, where you just feel like you canât talk to anyone about anything, and it sucks. The film is full of beautiful shots of the desolation of the city and this poor outsider who just wants to do a little something to improve it. Highly recommended! Food of the Gods / Frogs / Empire of the Ants / Jaws of Satan: Here we have three classic 70s nature-gone-wild films, plus Jaws of Satan, which is from the 80s so has a slightly different feel. Thereâs something I really like about these kinds of movies, in all their static, flat, stilted glory. Maybe itâs because theyâre kind of a revival of the monster movies of the 50s I enjoy so much. Iâm probably not making a good case for them, but theyâre comfort food for me, and I know one of you will understand! Others that have the same energy include The Incredible Melting Man, Night of the Lepus, The Devilâs Rain, and Kingdom of the Spiders. submitted by ATTAKcATHRAK to boutiquebluray [link] [comments] |

2023.06.01 22:37 Ill_Guest_2423 Shangri-La Medical Cannabis SuperStore - Monroe - OPEN?
I saw on their Facebook that this location is supposed to be open today. 30% off sale. Online order system is active.
Placed my order, got confirmation text that the dispensary received it and was prepping it. Happened to be in the area so I decided to stop before I got my âorder readyâ text.
Building was empty. Not a single person there.
I re-checked address (itâs the store on the east side of 75 in Warren county), hours (opens @ 10am) and still nothing.
Am I taking crazy pills?
