2023.06.02 20:54 Beneficial-Avocado36 In the past year I have been told I may have 4 different chronic illnesses

So I've never actually made a reddit post before but I'm at the point where I'm not even sure if I'm looking for help and advice or I just need to rant to a bunch of people who might actually understand what I'm going through.
Last March I got a tooth pulled out. Simple right? Not so much. I ended up with loads of swelling, jaw lock and so much pain. I was on mush for a week and taking pain meds. Specifically ibuprofen, which you're not meant to take on a empty stomach.
This then began a 3 month long journey with sickness and vomiting blood. I went to a and e multiple times, spoke to many different doctors. I got told 'you sure you're not pregnant, you probably are' (1- vomiting blood is not a sign of pregnancy, 2- I'm a trans guy who's been on testosterone for over a year). I also got told that it was because of my hormones, taking testosterone was making me vomit blood. Right. Then I got told that it was all in my head and that my anxiety disorder was causing it.
I finally got diagnosed with chronic gastritis and got some medication. As soon as I come off the medication the pain, the sickness, everything comes back.
Cut forward a few more months and I start really struggling, I'm always tired, I keep waking up feeling like I have the flu. I keep getting dizzy etc etc. Everything is just becoming hard.
I ended up going back to the doctors multiple times (I have been so lucky in the fact the GP I see regularly actually believed me and immediately started doing tests). Everything came back clear, apparently I'm healthy. So they told me it's most likely fibromyalgia and M.E.
Then I found out I'm actually Autistic.... And that I probably have ADHD.
Then I stopped taking some anxiety medication I had. It was medication that I didn't need to take every day, I could come off at any point. And if never really helped because it's less of an anxiety disorder and more autism! Whenever I hadn't taken the medication for a day or so i would start to get these episodes of presycope and feel horrific.
So I went back to the doctors, and now I'm being tested for POTS.
I am 25, and I'm stuck unable to do anything because of pain and fatigue. It's worse because I don't drive so I really am stuck in my flat. I moved away from my family for my partner before this all happened, but now my partner is going to start a new job so we can't move..... My family isn't exactly the most supporting either, but still.
I feel so isolated and helpless. I'm still working, I work from home, currently not full time. But I'm so tired and I have no idea what to even do. What are we supposed to do these situations?
I've applied for pip so I can try and reduce my hours, but I'm paying private for my transition and for therapy. Because I live with my partner I'm not entiteled to any other help apart from pip, even if I was unemployed. I cant keep on top of my flat or remember to cook for myself half the time. It's horrible. Don't get me wrong, not every day is bad.... But still.
I suppose I just needed a rant. So thanks if you got this far.

2023.06.02 20:43 frostfighter21 Why is Kobe constantly over looked?

I have been seen a lot of diss on Kobe or he is constantly over looked when it comes to top 10. I think it is more of a recency bias. I think people need a reminder who Kobe was.
Kobe came in to the league as a high schooler, trade to the Lakers from the Hornets. People would argue oh Kobe had a easier path than Lebron or MJ did because he was drafted into a championship ready team. That is a bs excuse. Kobe has no power in that trade. Was he lucky? Not that either. Jerry West saw something in Kobe. If Jerry West sees something in you then you are very talented and is a high praise. Kobe with his work ethic, mentality, and talent showed Jerry West that he was worth trading a very good center of Vlade Divac to the Hornets for a simple high schooler who was the 16th pick. Then he did had some growing pains especially air balling shots in the 1997 Playoffs as a rookie. He did what Jerry West saw in him, trained rigorously to be even better by the year of 2000, he was a champion. He did that three times in a row. Kobe did have a huge off court drama as well a huge one on court as well with Shaq.
Kobe then went through 4 years of piece of crap team. Considerably equal to Lebron's Cavs at the time. He developed a reputation as a ball hogger but what can you do when your next best player was Smush Parker. He did score 81 on the Raptors and won. He also changed to 24, a different type of Kobe. Number 8 Kobe is more athletic, more dunking and use of his natural given gift. Number 24, is more technically sound, more team oriented, team boosting, and think before act.
In 2008 He got the best costar he had since Shaq which was Pau Gasol. He was the perfect compliment to Kobe with dedication and love for the game. He then went back to back 2009 and 2010 in the finals and won both.
From 2011, he was dealt with constant injuries and at the end, in 2016, ended his career with 60 points game.
Kobe may have not been an efficient player. Nor was he the player that everyone liked. He was headstrong, toxic, and take what many would consider bad shots. But thats what made him better than most stars. He is willing to take the last shot even if it could ruin his percentage. He was willing to give it all for that one game. He wanted this teammates to have the same drive as him so that they could win the finals. You know, at last possible second, if the ball is in Kobe's hand, you felt at ease because in his hands, he will will that ball into that basket. Kobe is the second best SG of all time and no know from past and current will pass him.

2023.06.02 20:42 FordMFingRANGER Fortnight 7 media key review

Video Game Review 7 keys
Title: Fortnight
Publisher: Epic Games
Genre: Battle royale
ESRB Rating: T for Teen
My Rating: 4.5
Primary Audience: younger audiences
Year of Release: 2017
Platform: PC, Mac, X box 360, X box 1, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, IOS, and Android
Trailer:
Fortnight is an animated 3rd person battle royale style shooter video game. Battle royale means you enter a lobby with a set number of people and you fight to see who is the last person alive. This is a very cool concept because it is more realistic than shooter games where you keep respawning because if you die you lose all of your progress which makes your life in the game more valuable. The aspect of Fortnite that differentiates itself from other battle royale games is that in this game you have the ability to build. This means that you can collect resources and build walls and ramps to help protect yourself from enemies or to provide cover as you attack other players. In Fortnight the game starts where 100 players parachute down onto an island. Once you land the players have to find weapons and collect building materials to use to survive. The game also has a way to gather all of the players left in the game to one spot so the game does not take forever. “The storm” is the name of this in game characteristic, It is a poisonous cloud that drains health that slowly closes in on the island forcing players to move towards the end location on the map. The end location is different in every game so not to create a predictable advantage for players.
The First Media Key: Balance
The first media key of balance applies to Fortnight because of the even playing field that the game has established. This game does a great job of providing an equal possibility to all players for winning. Because all the players start out with nothing and have the ability to go wherever they want on the map all the players have a chance at winning if they have the right skills. The game is also balanced in the sense that the game is constantly evolving through changes in the map, new cool weapons that they add to the game. Every few months or so the game developers change the map or add in new features to keep the game interesting and exciting.
The Second Media Key: Attitude Awareness
The second media key of attitude awareness applies to the game Fortnight in two different ways. The first message is survival of the fittest. If you are skilled at the game, you can turn any battle around and find victory in this game. Because of this message that the game conveys through how it is set up has let to players becoming incredibly good at this game. The second way that attitude awareness can be applied in this game is through recognizing what the game is advertising. The game often incorporates heroes from popular movies and TV serries into the game. The game has had refences to Star Wars, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, Batman, John Wick, the Avengers, Dune and many others. While by having these popular characters in the game they are helping themselves they are also simultaneously helping the media they are promoting.
The Third Media Key: The Dignity of the Human Person
It is difficult to argue that the third media key the dignity of the human person is upheld in this game due to the fact that the whole purpose of the game is to kill all of the other players in the game. This game can be extremely competitive which makes winning feel awesome but losing very painful. Because of the difficulty of this game players spend a vast majority of their time on the game losing which can cause players to be filled with rage and anger. That being said I believe this game to be harmless due to the animated and very fake look of the game. The game is purposely not designed to resemble the real world closely.
The Fourth Media Key: Truth‐Filled
Truth filled the fourth media key can be applied to Fortnight in the sense that the players are able to evaluate their opponent’s skill levels through how they play the game. The main sign of an opponent’s skill is their ability or lack of ability to build. Players that are able to build quickly and fluently are often the winners of games. Another way that this game can incorporate the fourth media key is through teamwork. Players can join teams with their friends and work together in order to win the battle royale. This communication and team work can relate to real world applications and friendships.
The Fifth Media Key: Inspiring
The fifth media key inspiring applies to Fortnight in the sense that the game teaches perseverance. Fortnight is an extremely difficult game to win that requires a great deal of skill obtained through practice. It is very common for a more skilled player then you to run up on you and absolutely demolish you. The frustration caused by this inspires and motivates players to continue to train their skills with the hope of someday being that player absolutely recking other players.
The Sixth Media Key: Skillfully Developed
The sixth media key skillfully developed doe greatly apply to this game. Since its release in 2017 this game has been consistently at the top of the charts. This game has even morphed into a sort of social ranking for young boys where if you are good at the game, you are cooler. The game developers have done an incredible job of creating the world of fortnight through the awesome graphic art used and the fun weapons some biased off real weapons and others entirely made up. This game has done an excellent job of adapting and creating now game modes and changing the battlefield layout. There are even memes about how when Fortnite incorporates video games characters from other games that the Fortnight version is better then the original.
The Seventh Media Key: Motivated by and Relevant to Experience
The seventh media key applies to fortnight is the sense that players are motivated by the hard goal of achieving victory and the glory that is associated with it. When the game was first getting popular it was common for players to actually post pictures of their wins on social media because it was deemed such a hard game to beat. Players are also motivated to do better then they did in the previous game they played trying to get closer to first place.
Fortnight is an extremely challenging but fun game to play. Personally, now I am not a huge gamer and prefer to spend my time outdoors or watching TV so when I play the game my skills are quite low which makes it less fun. In the past however I was pretty average and had a lot of fun playing the game with my friends. I think this is a very well-designed game and would give it a 5 out of 5 even though it is not my favorite game because I am not very good at it. The reason I am giving this game such a high score is because I can recognize how creative and well managed this game truly is and how awesome it is for people that are actually good at it. I believe this game is appropriate for ages 10 mainly because I don’t think kids younger then 10 should be spending a ton of time on video games but that is just my personal opinion.

2023.06.02 20:37 CiggyCiggy Passed Sec+!

That sigh of relief when you see the score after that survey though!
Took about a month of just studying using Messer and Dion video course and practice tests. I didn't like the Dion course much, his Net+ course was better imo. Messers course was awesome for filling in gaps. I used ChatGPT for understanding complicated concepts.
Study method:
I watched all of Messers videos at 1.25/1.5 speed to get an overview of the scope. Didn't take any notes, but tried to pay attention as much as possible. Then watched Dions video course and took notes. It helped hearing the topic from a different perspective, but wasn't worth taking the notes. Then I went through the exam objectives, marked what I knew/didn't know. Took Dions 1st practice exam and looked at my weak areas. Reviewed with Messers videos. Rinsed and Repeated with all 6 of his exams. His exam explanations are really good, and high practice exams on Udemy come cheap (although they are not the best since some topics seem out of the scope of the exam). I decided to purchase Messers exams.
From here it was just seeing what I got wrong on the practice exams and reviewing those topics. The key is to understand all the objectives in the exam. A week before the exam, I started reviewing every objective and taking notes on the ones I didn't understand with Messers videos. You want to take notes in your own words, not just copying down whats written in the videos. If I didn't understand the topic fully, I would chatGPT, watch the relevant messer video and write the meaning of the objective in my own words. I think I went overboard with this exam, but whatever helps you retain the info and more importantly understand the objectives.
I'm considering the A+ just to complete the trifecta but I'm not sure. Any recommendations?

2023.06.02 20:34 enviousbuckeye What cashback VISA card can I use at Costco and as a catch-all? Preferably do not want a Costco Citi Visa

Essentially, I have a PNC Visa card that has $50 minimum redemptions for cashback that I used to use as a catch all card. It is my oldest account I am the primary holder of (6.5 years), but it has become mediocre on benefits with 1.25% cashback. I want to throw it in a drawer with a recurring payment on it and forget it. I recently moved to an area with a Costco 3 years ago and shop there often. My gas goes onto my Verizon card for 4% back already, so getting a Costco Citi is not attractive to me for gas. Also, I am not a fan of the idea of getting my cashback once per year waiting in line at the store, I assume it would be mayhem lol.
My Apple Card is my 2% catchall for mobile purchases, but it is a MasterCard. My SavorOne is also a MC. Is there a Visa card you would recommend?

Thanks in advance!!

2023.06.02 20:28 baehelpkit Koby Altman Transactions

When Koby Altman became GM in 2017, we shortly after traded our disgruntled franchise point guard Kyrie Irving for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick.
On Feb 8, 2018 Koby made multiple trades. Players sent out included Thomas, Crowder, Shumpert, DWade, Channing Frye, and DRose. We recieved Jordan Clarkson, Rodney Hood, and Larry Nance. The 1st round pick from the Kyrie trade becomes Collin Sexton. LeBron leaves in the offseason, Love extends his contract (4yrs/120m) topping out his overall deal to 5yrs/145m. A few games into the 2018-2019 season, Tyronn Lue is fired and Larry Drew becomes interim head coach. Koby made three minor trades that season, including acquiring a 1st round pick which was used on Dylan Windler. John Beilein was hired as head coach. We select Darius Garland, Windler and trade for Kevin Porter Jr. in that draft.
During the 2019-2020 season, Beilein is fired and JB Bickerstaff becomes head coach. Koby made two trades that season. The first was Jordan Clarkson for Dante Exum and a 2nd round pick that eventually became Khalifa Diop. Looking back on it, this was an awful trade as Clarkson averaged 20 ppg this past season and would've had much higher trade value if we held onto him and let him play his game. The other trade was John Henson, Brandon Knight and a 2nd round pick for Andre Drummond. During the offseason, the Cavs selected Isaac Okoro and signed Lamar Stevens to a 2 way contract.
During the 2020-2021 season, Koby made a great trade; acquiring Jarrett Allen and Taurean Prince in the 4 team trade that saw James Harden being traded to Brooklyn. We only gave up Exum, a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick in that deal. A few other minor trades were made that season. Then the Cavs had a great draft, selecting Evan Mobley with the 3rd pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Before the start of the 2021-2022 season, the Cavs in a 3 team trade acquire Lauri Markkanen and only give up Nance and a 2nd round pick. Another great deal by Koby Altman and the Cavs front office.
A reoccuring theme so far is that Koby doesn't let assets go to waste. Instead of letting a player who we don't want walk in free agency, usually Koby trades them while they are still under contract to acquire further assets. Another example would be how the Cavs ended up trading Taurean Prince and a 2nd round pick for Ricky Rubio, a trade that happened a few weeks before the Markkanen trade. And then after Rubio's injury we traded him, along with a 1st round pick for Caris LeVert. Despite losing in the play-in tourament, 2021-2022 was a good season for the Cavs, considering no one really thought they would even be decent.
Heading into the 2022-2023 season, the Cavs make a blockbuster trade. Donovan Mitchell was acquired for Sexton, Markkanen, 14th overall pick Ochai Agbaji, 3 1st round picks, and 2 1st round pick swaps. The Sexton pick was acquired from the Kyrie trade, Markannen came from the Nance trade. So Kyrie, Nance, Agbaji, 3 future 1st round picks and 2 future 1st round pick swaps eventually turned into Donovan Mitchell. If Sexton doesn't put up high scoring numbers on his rookie deal and Koby doesn't make a smart move acquiring Markannen, we probably never end up with Donovan Mitchell. The Cavs have low odds of ever acquiring a superstar in free agency, so giving up the 3 1st rounders and 2 pick swaps was worth it.
If we were a team that constantly let assets go to waste and let players walk in free agencyinstead of trading them beforehand, we would not be a playoff team like we currently are. Koby has ultimately made many smart decisions in his tenure as GM and now President of Basketball Operations and only a few small mistakes. Acquiring Caris LeVert can be debated, considering we possibly could've got someone else for that 1st round pick we gave up for him. LeVert's $28 million cap hold causes us to have no cap space this summer and we have to bring him back using Bird Rights. He had a good series vs the Knicks and despite inconsistency on offense, he was a solid defender throughout the season. IMO, the Rubio and Wade contracts could also be seen as mistakes. I know many people wanted the Cavs to make a deal around the trade deadline, but the team had a great regular season and the Cavs were right at the tax line so I can't blame them for not wanting to mess with the cap situation either. The rebuild could've lasted much longer, but with smart transactions and for the most part, good drafting, we are now a team who will continuously make the playoffs throughout this decade.

2023.06.02 20:28 WoolyWeenie Credit Utilization as an AU dropped my score 100+ points, do I wait for it to recover before applying for CCs?

To make a long story short, I'm a young adult (25) with no credit cards in my name, besides being listed as an AU on a parent's credit card. Last month, another AU ran a sizeable biz expense on said CC which set my credit utilization rate at around 80-90%. This single transaction (although it was paid off a day later), dropped my score from a 774 down to a 665.
I was getting ready to use my high score to apply for some attractive (entry level) cards. But after this mishap, I feel like my options have been limited a decent amount.
  1. Should I wait 90 days for my credit utilization to update and bring my score back up? I'm assuming even if my credit utilization reverts back to its normal levels, I will have a while to go before I ever see a number in the upper 700s again.
  2. If I'm looking for a better overall entry level CC, are my options even that limited? What would I be missing out on? Should I just go and get myself a credit card and quit waiting for my score to raise?

2023.06.02 20:26 lishon2005 AITA/ for not wanting to talk to my bf after I feel disrespected

Edit: got removed for “violence” so I’m posting here Okay this is my first post so please excuse any uncultured Reddit language.
Anyways a little backstory, my (17f) boyfriend (16m) have been together for a little over 7 months and it really has been great. We were best friends for over a year and a half and finally confessed to each other. We have only had one kinda bump in our relationship but we over came that and everything was fine.
So today, we were play fighting and he ended up hitting my head on this little dresser thing near my bed. I told him I didn’t wanna play anymore and he continued to play and i hit my head harder this time. I got really mad and got from under his grip, then I left my room and went into one of the living rooms. He came to me and was trying to be apologetic but I was too mad in that moment and told him to leave me alone multiple times. He finally got the memo and left back into my room. When I finally cooled down like 25-45 mins later I went back into my room and tried to talk.
He was giving me the cold shoulder and didn’t want talk to me, so I tried to comfort him by cuddling him and hugging him while trying to figure out what was wrong with him. I lightly took his phone out of his hand so he could focus on the conversation and I ended up being on top of him while we were talking. He has his phone back at this point and says “If you’re not going to suck my dick, then get off me”. Im not gonna lie he really hurt my feelings with that one so all I could say is “that is so disrespectful” as I got off of him and he muttered something under his breath that sounded something like “oh well” as he walked out of the room but I’m not completely sure.
All I could do was silently sob under my covers because I was so heartbroken that someone I loved could say something so hurtful to me when I said nothing that could even compare to that. He came back in my room and layed in the bed but I just left and sat back on the couch because I was so hurt. Like 10 mins later he came into the living room and tried to lay on me and I just got up and left. I went to go use the restroom and he texted me asking me to ask my dad to drop him off at home if we weren’t gonna be talking all day. I sent him a message saying what he said to me was wrong and that I did nothing for him to speak to me like that and I’m not someone he should be speaking to like that. He said he wasn’t trying to be disrespectful and he didn’t mean to hurt my feelings but I obviously don’t feel that way.
I just want to know if I’m the AH in this situation because I kinda feel like I’m overreacting but I’m still hurt by what he said.

2023.06.02 20:23 Missing_Back Is it even worth waiting to pay off a 0% interest credit card for furniture (~$1300)?

I bought a couch for ~$1700, paid 25% of it, and put the rest of it (~$1300) on a CC with the store at 0% for 24 months after delivery. I could pay for it out of pocket, but I'm trying to learn how to use debt effectively, and the general method I'm familiar with is: if you get something with 0% interest, in the meantime put that money somewhere where it will make money for you, and then pay it in full before you ever have to pay any interest.
This is obviously a lot more effective with something like a car loan, since you'll have a lot more money to put somewhere where it will make you money.
Is it even worth it with something like this? I currently only have a HYSA that I was going to put the money into, but all things said and done, this extra $1300 would only get me like 4 bucks every month. On top of that, I have to make minimum monthly payments so over time that $1300 will slowly decrease. Or I wouldn't touch that $1300 in my savings at all, pay for the minimum payments out of my paycheck (like $30 a month) and then right before the 24 months are up, pay for remaining balance (~$600) either out of that $1300 or potentially each month set aside enough so after 24 months I have the right amount.
Or should I just pay it off as soon as I can and forget about it? Is this amount too small to justify all of this planning and maneuvering?
EDIT: Just under $19k in savings, $2k in checking. Starting a new job in a week making $85k + $12k sign on bonus. I currently have no other savings or investments, but once I start there, I'll be contributing the max to 401k (they match 12.5% I believe), and I'll also put at least $3k into VTSAX. I have $2700 in student loans, but I have a chunk of my $19k designated as school loan money, so I can pay that off whenever I want, but interest won't start until November of this year, so I haven't had any reason to do it yet.

#NIOCORP~The United States Needs a Shift in Perspective on Mining & a few other odds & ends....

June 1, 2023~The United States Needs a Shift in Perspective on Mining~

The energy transition involves more than a move away from high-carbon fuels to low- and zero-carbon fuels. It also entails the fundamental reorganization of the global economy around so-called critical minerals—the metals and other raw materials needed to build electric cars, solar panels, power lines, and other technologies that cut carbon emissions.
At the risk of stating the obvious, mines are needed to produce critical minerals, and right now, United States doesn’t have enough mines meet the demands of the energy transition—not even close.
While the United States also has to work closely with allies to secure the supply chains for these materials, something has to change at home, too.
Like many other U.S. industries, mining was largely outsourced to other parts of the world during the late twentieth century. As a result, global markets for most in-demand minerals are now dominated by the Chinese Communist Party. In fact, of the 50 critical minerals listed by the U.S. government, China is the top producer of 30 of them.
“For most critical minerals, the United States is heavily reliant on foreign sources for its consumption requirements,” a U.S. Geological Survey report said. It further reported that domestic metals production fell 6 percent in 2022.
Simply stated, the United States needs to build new mines and expand existing mines in the United States. Rather than stop digging, the United States needs to start.
To be sure, it will not be easy. Before the passage of landmark environmental laws in the 1970s, including the National Environmental Policy Act and Clean Water Act, the U.S. mining sector was known for polluting practices and indifference to the concerns of neighboring communities. Public anger and distrust proved to be a major factor in the offshoring of U.S. mining after the 1970s. This was understandable, but there were unintended consequences.
An “out of sight, out of mind” approach to metals and other mineral commodities took hold, giving tacit approval to toxic waste dumping, the use of child labor, and other reprehensible mining practices abroad.
Today, there is an opportunity to write a new chapter for the U.S. mining sector, in which the some of the raw materials for advanced energy technologies are produced here, under close scrutiny, subject to the most protective standards in the world and—above all—with strong public support.
The complicated history of mineral extraction in this country must be addressed fully and forthrightly, but it cannot be used as an excuse to keep saying no. At this point there doesn’t seem to be a mine on federal land that is not facing opposition, delays, or rejection.
Fortunately, there are already some promising examples of this new approach to mining in the United States.

A Sense of Patriotism

In southeast Nebraska, for example, the developers of a mine that will produce materials for electric-vehicle batteries have built a strong base of support in the local community. As reported by the New York Times, the mine has secured all the permits it needs to start digging and the developer—Colorado-based NioCorp—is now working with the U.S. Export–Import bank to complete financing for the billion-dollar project.
The planned Elk Creek mine will produce niobium, scandium, titanium, and a series of magnetic rare earth minerals. The global market for these minerals is dominated by other countries, including China, Russia, and Brazil.
These critical minerals can be used to build the components for electric vehicle batteries, fuel cells and wind turbines. But in conservative southeast Nebraska, NioCorp has found ways to connect with people who are less concerned with the energy transition and more worried about economic issues and national security.
The minerals produced at Elk Creek will also be used to make lighter and stronger steel products for the automotive, construction, and oil and natural gas industries, and to build fighter jet engines, among other military applications.
“NioCorp is being very thoughtful in how they’re communicating with Southeast Nebraskans,” Senator Julie Slama (R-NE), who represents the Elk Creek area, said. “In Nebraska, we have a sense of patriotism and desire to serve our country.”
While the proposed mine still has its detractors, the broad-based appeal of the project has helped maintain a sufficient mass of support, also known within industry circles as the “social license to operate.”

Same Rocks, More Value

While building new mines is absolutely necessary, it will also be important to make the most of the mines the United States already has. In some cases, existing mines will be expanded, but another strategy is gaining momentum: full-value mining.
This strategy identifies new ways to get other metals and other valuable materials out of the same rocks, which improves the economics of the existing mine and reduces mining waste.
A leading example of full-value mining is taking place in Utah at the Kennecott copper mine, southwest of Salt Lake City. Last year, the mine’s owner—Rio Tinto—started producing tellurium there as well.
The tellurium, which is used to make highly efficient thin-film solar panels, was in the same rocks as the copper. But until last year, it was not cost effective to separate it out, and the tellurium was discarded along with other waste.
That changed when Rio Tinto found a U.S. buyer for the tellurium, First Solar, which builds solar panels in Ohio. The deal was “an important step towards securing a North American supply chain of critical minerals to support the clean energy transition,” the mining company said.

Old Mines, New Tricks

The idea of reprocessing piles of discarded rocks and other mine waste has also gained steam. Innovative companies like Nth Cycle and Phoenix Tailings have developed technologies that can cleanly and safely extract critical minerals from this waste.
These breakthroughs also allow for the reprocessing of waste at pre-1970s mines that were abandoned and never properly cleaned up. For example: Regeneration, a start-up mining company is scouting for locations where critical minerals can be produced from abandoned mines and other so-called legacy sites, while creating new revenue sources for cleaning up those sites.
According to Corey Fisher, the public lands policy director for Trout Unlimited, an environmental nonprofit with experience in abandoned mine restoration, the work of Regeneration and others “will help both clean up abandoned mines and recover much needed transition minerals.”

Confront the Past, Build the Future

Abandoned mines are not the only legacy to confront. The quest for mineral wealth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was especially cruel to Native American communities.
That history, and the distrust it continues to produce, should not be brushed aside in the quest to build a domestic supply chain for clean energy technologies. According to investment research firm MSCI, between 68 percent and 97 percent of U.S. cobalt, copper, lithium, and nickel reserves are located within 35 miles of Native American reservations.
Changing minds about mining in Native American communities will be a massive undertaking, and there are bound to be conflicting signals along the way.
For example: Lithium Americas, the developer of a Nevada mine that will produce lithium carbonate, a key mineral in batteries, reached a “community benefits agreement” last October with the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe that includes job training, local hiring, cultural education, and other initiatives. However, three others—the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, Burns Paiute Tribe and Summit Lake Paiute Tribe—are fighting the project in federal court, arguing they were not properly consulted.
Conflicts like these can be resolved or even avoided, but the amount of work needed should not be underestimated, according to Daniel Cardenas of the National Tribal Energy Association.
“If you want loyal and long-term mining partners who can supply the most environmentally friendly and sustainable critical minerals, start talking to the Tribes now,” Cardenas wrote on Linkedin.

A Project-by-Project Focus

According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, leaders in the White House and in Congress have plowed billions of dollars into research, resource assessment, and workforce development programs focused on critical minerals since 2020.
The area of critical minerals also offers one of the rare slivers of bipartisan light. Among other things, that means allowing national security concerns—such as materials needed by the Department of Defense—to play a bigger role in the discussion, as opposed to only seeing mining through an environmental lens.
There are also promising efforts within the Biden administration and on Capitol Hill to speed up the years-long permitting process for mining projects while maintaining environmental safeguards.
These initiatives are essential, but it would be a mistake to assume that all the work to build a domestic supply chain for critical minerals can be done from Washington, D.C. in one fell swoop.
This endeavor will succeed or fail based on delivering this new positive narrative for mining. And the difference will be whether the neighbors can be persuaded that digging for critical minerals in the United States is not just good for the planet—it is good for them too.

June 2, 2023~China Is Digging a Big Frickin' Hole 33,000 Feet Into the Earth~

China Is Digging a Big Frickin' Hole 33,000 Feet Into the Earth (yahoo.com)

Well at the Shunbei oil and gas field belonging to Sinopec Northwest Oil Field Co. in Tarim Basin of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on February 21, 2019.
China has seemingly set off on a journey into the center of the earth. This week the country has begun digging what will eventually become the deepest hole in China’s history to test drilling technology and further understand the Earth’s underground structure, Bloomberg reported.
Once completed, the hole is going to be 10,000 meters (32,808 feet). That’s a little more than 6 miles deep into the earth. The drilling is expected to occur for 457 days and is being led by the China National Petroleum Corp, according to Bloomberg. It will cut through 10 continental strata, which are the various layers of the earth. Once completed it will reach down into the cretaceous system; rocks in that layer of the year date back more than 140 million years.
The drilling project is part of the country’s efforts to expand underground research. During a speech back in 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged scientists to break new barriers in different areas including deep earth exploration, China Daily reported. And earlier this year, Chinese officials vowed to strategically build up the country’s energy supplies and mineral resources. “China will launch a new round of domestic prospecting operations, focusing on strategic bulk minerals that are in short supply,” Wang Guanghua, the minister of Natural Resources, said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency, according to Bloomberg.
This could explain why the project is based in the Xinjiang region, which is the largest oil and gas-producing area in the country, the South China Morning Post reported. China also has some of the world’s largest crude iron ore reserves in the world, which is widely used in steelmaking. This could present another energy opportunity for the country as it tests drilling technology.
Countries around the world are increasingly focused on mineral exploration. Rare earth minerals and other elements found deep underground are necessary for new clean technology. They’re often used to make batteries for electric vehicles, for energy storage, and for wind turbines. And as the market for more clean energy continues to increase, nations and businesses will need steady access to those minerals to keep up with demand.

2023.06.02 20:21 Professional-File931 Goethe C2 Prüfung

Hey guys, I just passed my Goethe C1 exam with 86% and am thinking about going for the C2. I do not really need it for any particular reason, just to have the certificate. I have been to a language school for the level C1.1-1.2, live in Germany, and decided to take the C1 exam this May. I studied alone for it, did around 10 practice tests in April and May and the results I got were always around 80-90% which were quite indicative of my actual result. I would like to ask those who passed C2, which books did you use and how much time do you think it would take if I studied alone. I speak German on an everyday basis, my boyfriend is a native speaker who also is a Lehrer. My biggest flaw is Schreiben, almost failed it on my English C2 exam and got the lowest score (19/25) which I’m still very happy about on the Goethe C1 exam.
I need realistic advice, I’m not a language Genius. I’m also not looking for any excellent grades, just to get the needed 60% in all sections.

2023.06.02 20:18 jimbobbypaul Ranking the Top 131 FBS Programs of the Last 40 Years: 84. Iowa State

Main hub thread with the full 131 rankings
For all the Cyclone fanatics out there, I see you guys. For the 6th worst Power 5 team on this list, Iowa State has had incredible support, averaging 50,000+ fans a year even during their lows. Finally, after years of struggling minus a few nice Dan McCarney years, Iowa State’s found a coach that’s brought them consistent success in Matt Campbell. Outside of Campbell’s first year in which he went 3-9 and the latest 4-8 season in 2022, the 5 years in between (2017-21) all place in my top 7 ISU seasons over the last 40 years. Whether last year was an outlier or if Iowa State will regress to their historical mean remains to be seen, but the last 6 years have been great compared to what fans have been accustomed to.

Iowa State certainly has a knack for producing really good RBs. 4 of their 5 All-Americans come from 2 RBs in Troy Davis (1995, ‘96) and Breece Hall (2020, ‘21). At just 5’8 183 lbs, Davis became the first player in NCAA history to rush for 2000 yards in back-to-back seasons, and remains one of only 2 players to ever do so. In 1995 he ran for 2010 yards and 15 TD, placing 5th in Heisman voting. He outdid himself a year later, rushing for 2185 yards and 21 TD, narrowly missing out on the Heisman, finishing to 2nd Florida QB Danny Wuerfel, who got 49% of the votes compared to Davis’ 43%. Davis won 3 of 4 regions, but lost badly in the South. Still, the tradition of producing strong RBs rings true, as Iowa State’s produced 8 RBs during the last 40 years with 2500+ career rushing yards. Notable NFL players include David Montgomery, Breece Hall, Allen Lazard, Pro Bowler Kelechi Osemele, and as a 49er fan, future Hall of Famer Brock Purdy.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 1997 (1-10 overall, 1-7 Big 12)
Remember how good Troy Davis was, especially after I described him above? Well, his teams weren’t very good, going 3-8 in 1995 and 2-9 in 1996. So you can imagine how 1997 went after he had left for the NFL. Iowa State didn’t stand a chance in Dan McCarney’s 3rd year as head coach, and it’s honestly a miracle the Cyclones let him stay for so long, as it took 6 years for him to get his first winning season. The gamble paid off though, as he was eventually inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame. Still, 1997 was his worst year. They had a talented freshman QB by the name of Sage “Helicopter” Rosenfels on the roster, but he wouldn’t start for another 2 years. QB was not a big issue though, as Todd Bandhauer had a respectable year, completing 48% of passes for 2514 yards 20 TD 9 INT, leading the Big 12 in passing yards and TDs. Bandhauer was a 2-time All-Academic Big 12 selection, and is currently an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State. WR Tyrone Watley led the Big 12 in receiving yards with 827, and RB Darren Davis had 1000+ yards in just 9 games. Offense wasn’t a huge issue, but the defense gave up 44.8 PPG. The lone win on the year was 24-17 over 2-9 Baylor, and losses included 14-77 to #3 Nebraska and 20-63 to #13 Iowa, losing their 15th straight against the Hawkeyes.
5. 2021 (7-6 overall, 5-4 Big 12)
For this season to be a disappointment but also top 5 on this list tells you how far Iowa State’s come under Matt Campbell. Make no mistake, it was a disappointment, finishing 7-6 after a preseason #7 ranking, but they were still the best 7-6 team in 2021 (out of 17 teams) by my metric. Iowa State returned 4th year starting QB Brock Purdy, consensus All-American Breece Hall, 2x 1st Team All-Big 12 TE Charlie Kolar, and Big 12 Defensive POTY LB Mike Rose, so the preseason expectations weren’t unfounded. A typical ISU slow start saw them barely beat Northern Iowa, and a classic Brian Ferentz Iowa performance had the Hawkeyes take a 27-10 lead (27-17 final) despite getting outgained 173-339 in yardage. 2 weeks later, a trap game 31-29 loss in Waco all but ended the Cyclones’ playoff hopes, despite outgaining Baylor by nearly 200 yards. However, in true Iowa State fashion, they rebounded to mess up Oklahoma State’s season a few weeks later, beating the #8 Cowboys 24-21 to improve to 5-2. A 2-4 finish was mostly because of location, going 2-0 at home and 0-4 in road/neutral sites. It was a squandered year for Iowa State, outscoring Big 12 opponents by an average of 12 PPG but going just 5-4. 8 starters on offense made 1st/2nd Team All-Big 12, by far the most in the conference. Breece repeated as consensus AA/Big 12 OPOTY with 1774 yards and 23 TD from scrimmage, while Rose earned 1st Team all-conference again.
4. 2018 (8-5 overall, 6-3 Big 12)
For the first time since the Big 12 moved from divisions to a round robin format in 2013, Iowa State wasn’t picked in the bottom 2 with Kansas. Big 12 media picked them 7th, this time coming above Texas Tech, Baylor, and of course Kansas. But after starting QB Kyle Kempt went down in the season opener, and backup Zeb Noland went just 1-3, Matt Campbell gave a shot to a freshman by the name of Brock Purdy. In a sort of foreshadowing for names in the NFL, Kyle became a mentor to Brock, and Purdy exploded onto the scene, throwing for 4 TD and rushing for another in a 48-42 win at #25 Oklahoma State. He’d top that a week later, beating #6 West Virginia and Will Grier 30-14, this time the defense stepping up big to hold Grier to just 67 total yards. ISU never looked back with Purdy, and nearly made the Big 12 title game if they had beaten Texas. They finished the regular season 8-4, 3rd in the Big 12, and nearly beat 11-2 Washington State in the bowl. Campbell won Big 12 Coach of the Year for the 2nd straight season. Purdy was 6th in the nation in passing efficiency, completing 66% of passes for 2250 yards 16 TD 7 INT, on 10.2 YPA. RB David Montgomery had another 1000+ yard rushing season and has gone on to have a productive NFL career. WR Hakeem Butler was 3rd in the nation in yards per catch (22.0), getting 60 passes for 1318 yards and 9 TD.
3. 2017 (8-5 overall, 5-4 Big 12)
Before Brock Purdy and Iowa State could run, the 2017 team had to walk. Years of effort from give-it-their-all players like Allen Lazard and Joel Lanning culminated in a magical 2018 season that might just be the fondest on this list. ISU had gone just 11-37 over the previous 4 seasons, so a 2nd to last place Big 12 finish was expected. After a 2-2 start, ISU pulled off maybe the biggest win in school history, beating #3 Oklahoma 38-31, who’d go on to make the playoff with Baker Mayfield winning the Heisman. LB Joel Lanning, who was the team’s starting QB the previous 2 seasons, was the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week, logging 8 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, as well as 9 rushes for 35 yards and 2 completions for 25 yards on offense. A few weeks later against Oklahoma State he’d become the 1st player in the last 10 years to record a pass TD, rush TD, and half sack in the same game. After the win over OU though, just a few weeks later Iowa State would ALSO beat #4 TCU 14-7!!! A few one possession losses later and ISU finished 7-5, but would beat yet another top 25 team in the bowl in #20 Memphis.
Lanning was named a 1st Team All-American by FWAA, racking up 114 tackles, 6 sacks, 5 TFL, 1 INT, 135 rushing yards, 47 passing yards, and 3 TD. Not bad for a former QB. QB Kyle Kempt was one of the most underrated stories of the season, emerging as the starter in the 5th game and going on to throw 15 TD to just 3 INT. Kempt was a 5th year walk-on who had only thrown 2 passes in his career prior to the Oklahoma game. By the time the season was over, he had 2 wins over top 5 teams, and today is still on the team as a coach.
2. 2000 (9-3 overall, 5-3 Big 12)
Like the 2017 team, the 2000 Cyclones came out of nowhere, a dormant program that had gone just 27-80-3 the previous decade. ISU players knew the talent they had though, led by future NFL QB Sage Rosenfels, one of 9 players that would go on to make NFL rosters. Another would go on to join the Iowa Senate, and the late LB Justin Eilers would fight in the UFC. They played a very favorable schedule, going 8-3 in the regular season with 0 wins over Power 6 teams with a winning record, but did beat 7-4 Ohio, 8-5 UNLV, and rival Iowa for the Cy-Hawk. ISU put any “soft schedule” talk to rest when they beat the Big East’s 3rd placed team, Pitt, in the bowl 37-29. Rosenfels had a nice curtain call, winning offensive POTG with 23/34 passing for 308 yards and 2 TD. Rosenfels did what he had to during the year, with deceiving stats of 2298 passing yards 8 TD 12 INT. He was a solid runner though, and would become known for his patented “helicopter” move in the NFL, rushing for 381 yards and 10 TD. RB Ennis Haywood and C Ben Bruns were ISU’s two 1st Team All-Big 12 selections, as Haywood ran for 1237 yards and Bruns led the way. The 5’6(!) JJ Moses led the team in receiving with 775 yards, and was named team MVP.
1. 2020 (9-3 overall, 8-1 Big 12)
Ahh, but it had to be the 2020 team at #1. Even my algorithm places this team way above 2000 even though they had the same record, with the 2000 team finishing ranked 27th and 2020 finishing ranked 7th. After a typical ISU slow start, losing 13-30 to UL Lafayette, the rest of the year couldn’t have gone much better. In the 3rd game they beat eventual B12 champion Oklahoma 37-30. Later on they beat #17 Texas in Darrel K Royal 23-20, essentially ensuring Tom Herman would be fired after the season, and stomped 6-4 West Virginia 42-6. ISU entered the Big 12 championship game against Oklahoma as the 1 seed, and had an opportunity at the end to win, but came up short 21-27. A 34-17 Fiesta Bowl win over Pac-12 champion Oregon was pretty satisfying though, and Iowa State finished with their highest ever postseason ranking at #9. They cleaned up in the Big 12 accolades, taking up 9 of the 22 1st Team all-conference slots. Breece Hall was Big 12 Offensive POTY and a consensus All-American, with 1752 yards and 23 TD from scrimmage. LB Mike Rose won Big 12 Defensive POTY with 99 tackles, 10.5 total TFL, and 5 INT. Campbell won Coach of the Year, and WR Xavier Hutchinson and DB Isheem Young won Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year and Defensive Freshman of the Year, respectively. Shoutout to 1st Team All-Big 12 TE Charlie Kolar as well, who was a consistent force making 1st/2nd Team all-conference in each of his 4 seasons.

5th Quarter

Iowa State fans, what do you look back more fondly on, the Matt Campbell years with expectations of competing for a Big 12 title, or the Paul Rhoads years with a win over #2 Oklahoma State and some other fun upsets? Do you think Brock Purdy was always as good as he played for the 49ers in 2022, or is he mostly propped up by a stacked San Francisco offense? Who was better, Troy Davis or Breece Hall? Does David Montgomery take the 3rd spot or does that go to someone like Darren Davis/Alexander Robinson? Aside from going there, what makes someone choose to follow Iowa State? And how’d I do on your guys’ history?
